As Spring Rain

Rate this book
Michael only wants for his twin brother to be safe as he picks one bad boyfriend after another, never even lingering on the thought of loving Michael the way Michael loves him.

All Gabriel wants is Michael, each morning when he faces the day, and each night when he pulls a stranger's face in for a kiss instead of the one he wants the most.

Fixing Gabriel's boyfriend problems is a way of life for Michael, but what he doesn't know happens behind closed doors, where Gabriel welcomes each kick or hit, and where he numbs his pain with the sharp edge of a razorblade.

Can they find a solution to their situation and make both of them happy?

I would say that I am first a reader and then a writer. My fascination with books goes way back into the past when I didn't even know I could read something that wasn't given to me in school. Writing came later. First when I tried writing down the plots of the movies I found overwhelming and later in the form of a very dark blog that connected me with people I still consider very good friends.

When in reading I always reached for happy ending romances that helped me deal with the bad side of the world, while in my short stories characters died and their life usually reflected the reality that surrounded mine.

In time, vampires and shifters took the place of knights in shiny armors and I still searched for that happy ending . But with the years also came that wish for something edgier.
My current reading habits take me daily into the world of men, where kink is preferable and angst the realistic side of life in my dose of fiction. It was only natural that my fingers followed my thoughts and I came to a point where men only ogled men and women became side characters.

Somehow out of love for reading a writer was born. I won't say that the handsome men walking through my imagination have everything a reader might want. They are usually troubled, lost and insecure, but as they slowly stroll through my worlds, they eventually find their happy ending.

I'm sorry but this book did not do it for me and more than that it ticked me off.

G, or Gabriel, is the single most needy, eye-roll inducing, self-destructive individual. Why? Because he wants to fuck his twin? M, or Michael, is G's twin. Michael is the 'happier' twin but goes around protecting G from all his douchebag exes, and his silly indiscretions. I don't mind angst, I like a troubled character, but it has to make sense. Just lustng after someone - no identifiable reasons for behaviour other than lust - does not give me reasons to 'feel' it. I get it's twin lust, so G may be feeling toey over this, but it's fiction, it's twincest, don't use that as the plot device for someone who is cutting.

I was also singularly unhappy about the gang-banging ex and his pals, and that G defended the guy, I'm paraphrasing - 'he's better now.' That really ticked me off. This is a very unpleasant message. Then we learned, well we were told, that G asked for/wanted it. His brother found G with semen all over him, shivering, a mess, but that's alright, go back and be buddies with them G. That just really pushed the wrong buttons for me. There was no rhyme nor reason to G's behaviour. It was angering. Was there any great past parental issues? Some trauma, perhaps? No. G was just co-dependent, childish, and self-flagellating.

My status updates showed some of my feelings as I read. I did not like the writing, the characters - G was a twit, and M just enabled him. The sex was awful - fucking someone after he's cut himself, he's bleeding, then smearing blood on his cock, body, and rubbing your face in it, NO! It is not my idea of sexy -

"I've wanted you since my first wet dream." Michael groaned into the skin between my cock and thigh. I just gasped, looked at him. His cheek was red from my blood, his hand smeared a bloody trail over my stomach, painted my cock as he gripped it, squeezed the head and made me shout.

I did not like As Spring Rain. If you take an issue as serious as cutting and not explain it well, if you over simplify serious behaviours, I'm not in a good mood. The brother's were two dimensional, at best. The story was frustrating, with a total disconnect for me, except for the things that angered me, and that does not make me a happy reader. I do not rate 1 star lightly. Others seem to like this book far better than I have, so if you're inclined to read it far be it for me to dissuade you. However, my personal point of view is as stated.

4.5 Imagine wanting someone, loving someone with everything you’re made of. He is your reason for existing, even if he doesn’t return your feelings. Imagine further that you see him every day, he’s an important part of your life. You are very careful to make sure your feelings aren’t noticed, because you don’t want to take a chance on losing the closeness you do have. Should you go farther? Admit how much you want him? But now imagine – this man who means everything to you, he’s your brother. Now what do you do?
I can see that this theme would not be for everyone. This is not an easy, fluffy book. Gabriel is a flawed character in so much pain that he is driven to horrible lengths to try to make it hurt less. Michael, his brother, just wants G to be happy, to be whole. It’s a very complicated, messy thing. They are brothers who love each other. Can they LOVE each other?
The secondary characters here, especially Gabriel’s one try at a decent boyfriend Troy, are well rounded and lovely. I would love to see Troy get an HEA. Zach, Michael’s best friend, is also a good one.
Since G was a very poor choice in men, I have to frown on the lack of condoms between the two. I understand the sentiment, but not really safe at this point.
If the twincest theme bothers you, this isn’t the book for you, but if you are looking for examples of completely difficult unconditional love, then give it a try and you’ll be caught up in Michael and Gabriel.

The first half of this short is a tease to the inevitable which was tasty indeed as the twins find their way to each other. There are lots of secondary characters but with little to no development and this is where the story lost some impact for me -- lots of characters spinning their wheels. Overall this was OK but not noteworthy in this genre.

Let’s put this right up front. If twincest is a deal breaker for you, then there is quite possibly nothing to see here. If it’s not, well then stay with me.

This is a completely intense story focused on Michael and Gabriel. They are different in many ways, with Michael being a lifeguard and yearning for the sun, and Gabriel hidden behind leather and jeans at the bar he owns. Yet, they are the other half of each other and they each see the perfection in the other. They are both in love with each other and that is the one thing they have managed to keep hidden. The both secretly long for the other and then secretly loathe themselves because of it. Gabriel’s knows he’s reaching his breaking point and thinks, “I needed more than words could possibly express and I knew I would crave for him until my very last breath and never have my need met.” So that’s the type of writing this story is and it is what I am able to really connect with at times; there are a lot of descriptive words that put you in the moment, inside the characters’ heads, but propel the story forward at a slower pace. It’s clear what the story is leading up to, but we don’t quite know how they are going to get there.

This short story takes on a lot and Gabriel’s cutting is a catalyst that then does propel the story forward. The cutting is only dealt with on the periphery and could be another deal breaker for some readers. When the guys get together it is an intense, erotic, slightly bloody scene filled with a lifetime of longing as well as healing.

Brothercest between twins is my guilty pleasure read and this was really good. The only reason Im giving this 4 star is the lenght of the story. I wanted this to be longer.

What the...? Holy woah! What did I just read? I actually just purchased this book two days ago because, I wanted to try a new genre I've never tried before and, lets say I'm not gonna read twin-incest type of books again in my lifetime. This is truly disturbing! I am emotionally scarred for life. I have nothing against Gay people, I'm actually supporting them but, this is just D-I-S-T-U-R-B-I-N-G. The Sex scenes are just absoutley gross! I mean what the actual heck? Gabriel cuts himself and then, has bloody Sex with someone? I mean literally, Gabriel's just putting blood on anyone he can get in bed with.

The first thing I thought of when Gabriel was cutting himself and, doing some just revolting things during some scenes were:

God, this book is just flipping revolting! I can't bear another moment thinking about it...I think I'm going to need therapy now.

I think, strangely, I liked it. I don't know why it's strange I like it. I just know I feel like it's strange I like it.

It's like From Beginning to End, except with all the judgment and angst coming internally instead of externally and a whole lot more denial. I got the same sort of vibe, though.

I feel like maybe it gets a bit too sappy towards the ending and it cuts off a bit abruptly, but it's certainly evocative of visceral emotions.

(triggers – cutting, suicidal ideation)

I am a fan of twincest, but the treatment of the cutting left me a bit off. The story is told from the first person POV of both characters, switching back and forth from Michael to Gabriel. Michael, while technically the younger twin, has always been looking out for his brother, even more so in recent years when Gabriel has had some unsuccessful relationship. Not merely unsuccessful, but often hurtful and abusive. You find through both men’s thoughts, that they have been lusting after the other, but feeling unable to act, and Gabriel deals with this by choosing inappropriate men and when that sours, by cutting. He has had yet another unsuccessful relationship, although with a “nice guy”, when Michael inadvertently finds him in the act of cutting and everything comes out in the open.

I think that Gabriel’s depression and suicidal thoughts, and why he cut were well explained and came across fairly realistically. Michael’s way of dealing with the conflict was to beat up the exes who hurt Gabriel, and Gabriel’s was to self-harm. However once they get together, Michael says “promise you won’t” and Gabriel basically goes “okay” and that’s it. I’m not a cutter, but it seems to me that simply getting your wish, in this case his brother as a lover, wouldn’t just make the urge stop. Anytime there was stress, and they both acknowledge that they have to mostly keep their relationship a secret due to the nature of it, would cause him to revert to cutting. Maybe. As I said, it just seemed like and easy out to not have to deal with the aftermath of the discovery.

Michael is more dominant in all ways. He’s the top, he keeps Gabriel in line, which could have been hot, but sex while covered in blood from cutting doesn’t really do it for me. I kept getting distracted by it and thinking “Shouldn’t you be bandaging him, not fucking him?” The style is quite lyrical at times, both men, but especially Gabriel, spend a lot of time thinking about the other and discussing the attraction. It’s not really a style that works all that well for me, but I know that’s a personal preference thing, and not to be generalized.

For those interested in a romance that tackles some serious issues like suicidal thoughts and cutting you may find it an interesting read, however it “solves” the problem just a little too simply in my opinion, or at least it comes across that way. For those who have triggers with cutting, you may want to avoid this, as it doesn’t shy away from it at all, or gloss over the blood and scarring. It’s certainly not a read for everyone, given the subject matter of twins combined with the mental health issues, but will definitely work for some readers out there who want to try something a bit different.

I've been kinda fascinated with the whole twincest theme since I read Tanya Huff 's Fifth Quarter. While that was a fantasy story and not erotic romance, it still didn't shy away from the topic of one twin feeling physical desire as well as romantic love for the other.
The whole Quarter series has LGBT elements effortlessly incorporated in the world building, so anyone interested in great writing in non typical fantasy should check it out.
Now, the reason I led with that is that I haven't really found another twincest story that managed to convey the same amount of anguish, guilty longing and sheer misery of unrequited lust/love for a twin.

Until this short story.

I'm so impressed I don't even know where to start. Because there wasn't much of a plot. Nor was it particularly different from several other twincest shorts I've read before.
What it DID have, however, was the emotional intensity and very well written characters. And just the perfect amount of realism to make it truly resonate.

And the fact that the sex was hot didn't hurt either...

The story lingered in my mind all day. I started thinking about all sorts of things I never really considered before. Like what it really meant - loving a twin, wanting them in every way, like a lover. Was is truly narcissism and if so - was that necessarily a bad thing? Isn't it also true that it's similarities and things we have in common that attract us to people, that we tend to get along best with? Is it narcissistic to be friends with someone who is just like us?

I can think of two terribly dysfunctional relationships of the top of my head, that are perfectly socially acceptable, despite how very unhealthy they are for both parties. Both are hurt there, yet no one would even consider involving themselves in it - not their business, blah, blah...

Love, as long as no one is hurt by it. That's the modern, tolerant mantra.

So MM twincest is growing in popularity as a sub-genre because no one is hurt by it, the taboo-breaking is nothing as bad as - say - brother/sister twincest would be, right? Because someone COULD be hurt there (a child??) so there are actual laws against it and everything.
But if there were no possibility of a child, would it be OK then?! The similarly growing popularity of stepbrother/sister sub-genre would suggest as much...

So all of that rambling came out of reading what is considered fluffy smut.

Hah!
Any story that can make a reader truly think and reexamine their views and beliefs in any way is not fluffy. It's pretty much the definition of awesome writing.
And let's not forget that they called Anais Nin's writing smutty too, at one time. Now she's considered a classic.

So, dear author, continue writing.
Please.

2.5 heart review by Cindy

I picked up this book knowing full well that it contained incest and to be honest it didn’t bother me. I know it’s a taboo sort of subject but I don’t really care. I’m a big fan of several fandoms, such as Wincest that involve two brothers in love with each other, so it doesn’t bother me in the least.

However, if you are going to write about a taboo subject like incest and hope to sell it and have it do well, then you are going to have to knock the ball out of the part with a fantastic story that’s gripping and this just falls short for me.

Michael and Gabriel are twins who love each other more than anything or anyone. The book isn’t a chapter in when it becomes clear that their co-dependency is overwhelming them both.

Gabriel is terrible at picking men. He tends to pick those who are the worst for him and it seems to be almost a punishment of sorts he gives himself over the less-than-brotherly feelings he has for Michael.

Michael can’t find a relationship of his own because his obsession with his brother always interferes so he sticks to trying to find Gabriel better boyfriends.

Sigh, I really tried to like these two characters but I just couldn’t click with either of them. I felt bad for Gabriel and the extent to which he punished himself but other than that, I just found most of this story to be bland.

Just a warning folks, incest isn’t the only “touchy” subject approached in this story. Bad boyfriends aren’t Gabriel’s only choice of self-harm and I did find that the author covered this subject with honesty and realism and was one of the best parts of the book.

The side characters in the story were just as unmemorable and the whole thing had a “whatever” kind of feel for me.

For being self-pubbed, the book is pretty well edited and I really can see where the author was trying to take the story, but it just never really got there for me.

I read this really short story expecting it to be quite a bit longer and I'm really conflicted about the story. It's involces twincest which I'm not squicky about because who am I to judge other people, even fictional characters and honestly I'll give almost any genre a chance.

I really enjoy books with the forbidden love aspect and I even understand how much it would hurt to love someone so much and think you'll never get a chance with them, especially because it's your twin brother. Both brothers in this story long for the other but neither will admit it out loud for the longest time. The build up is really good and the author paints a clear picture of how unstable both of these boys are emotionally. Gabriel, the most unstable brother, has issues beyond the longing for his brother and when we actually get to the sexy times in the book, it's really just not sexy.

I mean I'm sorry but spit and blood during sex just don't do it for me and it honestly seems really gross and unsanitary. I think with more time to develop the characters and a bit more back story, this could have been a lot better of a story and I would have given it a higher rating.

I think I'll go search a bit more for another twincest story and see if I'll read more in the genre or not... I know this book isn't for everyone, but it's fiction so don't judge me ;)

As incest/twincest stories goes this was an okay book. It was a bit darker story than I thought it would be. I have to give the author props for painting a picture of how unstable Gabriel and Michael were.

A lot of people these days are a bit like Gabriel or at the very least have gone through the emotions or knows someone who has experienced something like this. They fall into depression and aren't happy with themselves or their situation and the only way to relieve the pain is through cutting. Then there are those who want something so bad like Michael, so he just sits there and stews until he find an opening or loses control.

1.5/5 stars

What I liked about this book: M beating the crap out of Hound. And that's pretty much it.

I read this short book in a couple of hours, and I just couldn't connect with the characters.
First, there was G, a whiny annoying, self-destructive, masochist boy sith low self-esteem, who made me consider murdering a character so I didn't have to keepreading about how stupid he was.
Second, Michael, a guy who thinks is so amazing and strong, that was actually just pretty . . . blah!

The lenght of the books is not an excuse for such boring characters with no personality and a high dependence level to each other (I've connected more with a character in five pages than with G or M in I-don't-know-how-many-pages, thanks Kindle for that).

Anyway, my ovverall opinion about this book is that I didn't like it (I don't care about the incest because, even though I'm not a fan of it, I knew what I was getting myself into).

Gabriel and Michael are in a destructive rut and more so Gabriel. Gabriel's attraction to his twin has lead to destructive behaviour such as abusive men and cutting. Michael on the other hand resorts to violence when anyone hurts his brother. Both men are volatile because they happen to love each other the way siblings should not. This wasn't a horrible story but more a decent attempt to write about destructive behaviour. The story was too short to delve into any type of analysis and the HEA was ridiculous in a way. I give the author leeway (barely) because the heartache was brought on about not being together as opposed the disgust of loving each other.

(Had to round up only because... well... ugh... Story wasn't utterly horrible, but everything else was.)

This was really bad. I mean, I understand it was a short story, but... this is ridiculous. So much went wrong, it isn't even funny. And not to mention the writing. It was... *rubs at eyeballs and tries to erase image of horrible writing from my mind* I just want to forget the last half hour of my life ever happened.

Never. Again.
