Lisa is looking for the man of her dreams--a sexy dominant who will love her the way she is. Her boss Hank is content with his life--no love, but a steady play partner for the dungeon.

Lisa is looking for the man of her dreams--a sexy dominant who will love her for the submissive she thinks she is. Her boss, Hank, is content with his life--no love, but a steady play partner for the dungeon. Hank catches Lisa eavesdropping on his private phone conversation. Angry, he tells her he's going to punish her; and that's music to Lisa's ears. Could Hank be the man she's longing for? How can she let him know what she wants? Eager to bring her desires to reality, she begins to explore the kinky world of BDSM without truly understanding the physical and psychological risks. In this sado-masochistic erotic romance, Lisa's journey into this new realm of pleasure threatens to expose Hank's secret life and ruin her happiness. His reluctance to mix love and dungeon play threatens to break her heart. Can they find a middle ground that's safe, sane, and consensual?

I write BDSM-oriented erotic romance, with an emphasis on romance of the HEA (happily ever after) or HEN (happily ever now) variety.

I'm blessed with good friends and a deep love with my husband. I also know that a good relationship always involves growth and I try to reflect this in my stories.

When Trillium first asked me to read and review The Awakening I was excited. I've reviewed Trillium's other works and loved them. The Awakening on the other hand... I'm not sure if it was because I couldn't connect with Lisa and Hank or if it was because, despite it's short length, the story dragged a little.

Certain scenes could easily be deleted or re-written to seem more apart of the overall piece. A past review (not by me) mentioned the lack of after care when a scene is completed. In this book the issue was addressed and the after care although minimal is there. The views, feelings, the good and the bad is all packed into twenty-nine thousand words which could've easily been so much more and so much deeper.

A past character appears giving us a glimpse into his and his submissive's life but this too is minimal.

However; Hank handles the naive Lisa very well and his skills as a Dom are apparent. His ex-wife... Well lets just say the ex-wife is an ex-wife for a reason.

Lisa has the stereotypical overbearing mother and beaten down father. As to how her yearnings come about is unclear. I do believe one section tells us how two weeks ago she was looking for mister right and ready to settle down and have kids. Now, all she can think of is being spanked. I'm not so sure where such strong feelings in the span of two weeks come from.

Other structural aspects of The Awakening gave me pause. I had to double back a few times to understand what I was reading and what exactly Trillium meant. It also reads slightly choppy and rushed.

Trillium's past work, Toni's Dilemma and Touch of Love Anthology, I would recommend on the spot. The Awakening I would leave for them to find on their own.

NOTE/SPOILER: The lack of a safe word when Lisa meets up with Lady J is a huge red flag. A safe word should always be used especially when new subs are exploring the scene. I draw attention to the fact that even though this big no no is present Lady J was severely punished for her lack of observing this basic rule. Lady J did not practice safe, sane, or consensual. Always use a safe word. Even my partner and I who've been together ten plus years still have one. Ginger.

Lady J's punishment for the big no no is befitting and I hope everyone takes note of how Lady J's actions affected Lisa and Hank.

I think this is an important read for anyone who has fantasised over aspects of BDSM kink and wants to explore this world for the first time. Not only do you have the story of potential submissive Lisa and her attraction to Hank a practising caring Dom, and their journey together from an erotic spanking to a possible relationship, but it has lots of good information regards finding out about lectures, munches, protocol, how to play safely within the Safe Sane and Consensual parameters...with a well illustrated reason why a safe word is a must, always!

It also shows even in this day and age how ignorant and negatively judgemental society still is, with regards to work and practitioners of BDSM needing to keep it private and secret from family, non BDSM oriented friends and places of work...I look forward to the day when people can be free, whilst within the law of the land they live in, to choose and follow their sexual kinks and needs, as sane adults playing consensually with others of the same persuasion, without the negative tags by others.

I saw this as a recommended read in the BDSM group. It is well written, has a good standard of English and has been edited. Has to be four stars from me.
I would recommend this to all newbies and wannabes :)

I really enjoyed this book. The author does a good job of portraying the self-doubt and qualms of a woman who is drawn to BDSM but has a hard time accepting that aspect of herself. The emotions in the story are real, well-drawn, and very understandable when it comes to dealing with parental and societal expectations to lead a "normal" life as well as the fear of diving too quickly into something that could be (and is) dangerous.

The BDSM in the story is true to life. The characters' motivations are clear and the pace is only a little rushed. It offers accurate explanations of different aspects of the lifestyle, some of which are rarely touched on in BDSM literature. Definitely worth a read, and the author is definitely worth watching. I'll be looking for more books from her.

Lisa has been reading erotica and discerning that she may very well be a submissive at heart. Her boss, Hank, is the man of her dreams, she thinks. After a chance comment by Hank about punishing Lisa, she decides to explore her possible submissiveness by visiting a class at the local BDSM club. While there, she runs into Hank.

Lisa desperately wants to submit to Hank but Hank doesn’t do romance. He has play partners but doesn’t date. Lisa is hoping to change his mind.

While exploring her submissiveness, Lisa plays in a scene with a cruel Domme and decides to give up BDSM.

Hank decides to give dating a try with Lisa, but will she give him a chance knowing he’s a Dom?

Trillium managed to pack quite a bit into a short story. I liked that The Awakening is not all roses and sweetness. Bad things do happen sometimes and the effects can be everlasting. Trillium manages to show how emotionally and psychologically charged these situations are and how the outcomes can negatively affect those involved if they don’t follow their instincts. I thought the scene with Hank was charged and shows how an emotional connection can heighten the experience.

While I enjoyed the book and will definitely check out more from this author I did have a hard time connecting with the characters. I sometimes felt like I was missing a piece of the puzzle that would have connected everything a little bit better for me.

Overall a good book and I’m glad I read it. I’ll definitely be looking for more from this author.
