An intimate narrative of the exchange between Samuel and Hope, told from Hope's perspective, this short story prequel to the Running in the Dark series sheds light on a frightening event witnessed by Beth, who later narrates book one of the series. Goodnight Sam reveals the tragic history of Sam and Hope, who have existed as vampires since the eighteenth century. Sam has grown weary of the new world along with the escalating conflicts of his kind and wishes to attain peace in what is know as 'the true death', while Hope desperately desires to pursue a more fulfilling life together. The repercussions of the shocking mutual decision they make, and Beth's role as a witness to it, become the catalyst for the dangers facing Beth in the Running in the Dark Series.
Inger Iversen lives in Virginia Beach with her tree-hugging boyfriend Joshua and her overweight lap cat Max. When not reading or writing she spends her time watching reruns of True Blood or killing zombies in Call Of Duty.
I already read this book last year but when Inger Iversen told us it got free on Amazon, I wanted to reread it to leave a new and better review of it. I'm glad to feel pretty much the same as I did when I read it over a year ago. I would still give it five stars and I still think it's an amazing short story.
"Denial. Anger. Pain. Loneliness: my old companions that have beaten me into the ground in the past have returned here in the early morning hours on this dock to take Sam's place."
Honestly, I had forgotten how amazing this story was, even if it is really short. I love short stories and Goodnight Sam has to be one of my favorites. I love Hope's voice and her story with Sam. It's somber and breaks my heart but also beautiful.
"Beasts in a world of lambs are all he and I are, and I have to to accept this."
Also, this story is the first thing Inger Iversen ever published and for a something published for the first time she did such a great job. As always I loved her writing. It was beautiful, so captivating. I loved it and am so glad that I decided to reread it.
"I have loved you since the day I found you in the snow: broken and bloodied, praying for death to take you swiftly. I could see your beauty and spirit through the dirt and blood and I could feel you calling to me."
All in all, Goodnight Sam by Inger Iversen is an enticing story that I'm sure a lot of readers will think is amazing. It's a short read, so you can read it in one pull without stopping, except maybe for catching your breath for how heart-wreching but totally gorgeous this story was. Still five stars after more than a year for this beautiful story.
Review: This was a nice little surprise freebie I found on amazon. Having read the author's novel, Few Are Angels, I was actually looking to see when the sequel to that was being release. However, I stumbled upon Goodnight Sam and read it start away. Even though it is only 12 pages long, WOW it was so good and really packed with emotion.
Goodnight Sam is a short story prequel to Running in the Dark (Not really sure when that is being released :S) It follows Sam and Hope two vampires who have been together for over three centuries, Sam wants to end his vampire life but Hope is madly in love with him and wants Sam to stay with her. Now as a short story it is only has one scene. However, it gives the reader a little taster and wets your appetite for Running in the Dark. I really enjoyed Goodnight Sam and I didn't expect anything less because the author is amazing!
Go grab this fabulous little gem while it's free on amazon and sink your teeth into a new vampire series that I hope will be nothing short of fangtastic :)
Cover Talk: O.M.G I freaking love that cover. Most of you will know I am vampire crazy so this cover is super awesome to me. It's dark and sexy, really fits the vampire genre and those eyes?!?!? I could get lost in those eyes. If that is meant to be Sam then *drools* Yummy!!
Picked this up for free, read it in a few minutes (it's only 12 pages).
Brief scene with two vampires who love each other but have never shared that info with one another and chose this day to let go of immortality.
Interesting enough characters to want to read more in this series (although I suppose it revolves around different characters). Bugs me when characters can't be honest with one another an cause their own grief and anguish though... especially for 300 years.
Not bad for such a short story. It sets up Iversen's Running in the Dark series, which I might check out. But, I can already tell shoddy editing might be an issue.
…To fit in as best as possible, and not to hide but to be better predators. Beasts in a world of lambs are all he and I are, and I have come to accept this.
Samuel and Hope have been together for more than three hundred years. Presently, the two are standing at a dock.
Sam has been a vampire even longer than Hope has, and the Whole Vampire Thing has brought on a sense of ennui.
Shared emotions…
They’ve been companions all this time, but no action? What do they do all day, and all night? The woman is frustrated.
Hope is angry; Sam is weary.
Bizarre choices in (lack of) punctuation. Typographical errors swarm.
Very confusing; contradictory statements abound. Narrator legit says she’s never been in love…then tells Sam (and us) how much she loves him.
Bizarre style. Vapid conclusion.
“Sam, I will not ask you to live if you do not ask me to live without you.”
Goodnight Sam is a very short story about two vampires Sam and Hope told from Hope’s PoV.
Sam and Hope have been vampires since the 18th century and Sam wants to die because he has spent more than three centuries on earth, slightly longer than Hope who doesn’t want him to go because she loves him and doesn’t believe she can go on without him.
The story is a prequel to the Running in the Dark series so it is only a short scene which is full of emotion.
The ending was pretty sad and I probably would have cried if it was a full length novel and I got the chance to connect with the characters a lot more.
This is a great short read for any vampire lovers out there.
What better book can you pick up free if your a Vampire book lover. I am an avid fan of this series so to get a peak of another life of people we have come to know and love it awesome. This is wonderful in that you can sit in one afternoon and give it a fast read. It leaves you wishing there was more and wishing that things could have been different for those involved. Inger always gives us amazing characters who are so vivid and real. After receiving an ARC of Running In The Dark and loving it, I came across this short novella from the same series.
In Good Night Sam we meet up with the two Vampires we met briefly in Running In The Dark, that started the chain of events that lead up to the meeting of Trace and Bessina.
It's a very short (roughly 12 pages or so), undemanding read but if you enjoyed Running In Th Dark but were left curious as to how the two Vampires came to meet their death on the dock that fateful morning, well this goes a long way to explaining that.
I would recommend it to anyone who has read Running in the dark.
I wasn't expecting to want to cry after only twelve pages, but this is one short story that was full of raw love and need. I just wish the characters had made a different decision because I fell in love with them that fast. I can't wait for Running In The Dark!
I haven't read the other books in this series but considering how this very short story ended, I can't even see why I should continue this series.. Sorry, but there might've been a chance of me reading the next book if this had ended in a different way.
I love good vampire love stories. This was a good story to love although it was just too short to sink my teeth into, pun intended. It was like being hungry, asked to partake in a banquet, but then only allowed to sniff the aroma. It was good, but not quite satisfying.
Interesting but short although the author creates a nice mood in this brief piece. Unfortunately a few punctuation errors kept kicking me out of the story and it would take a moment to get back into the flow. Love the cover image though!
I think I was supposed to read the book before this extra scene. I felt confused by this until I knew it re-narrated scene.. So, I'll be reading the book then re-reading this one again..
This freebie I found on amazon, and I really like this book. Even though it a short story, it was so good and really packed with emotion. It made me want to cry… So, So sad… It was awesome reading…
A powerful punch packed within a short story! Emotion filled that leaves the reader ready to cry and drained. Wonderful words of love, loyalty, and devotion...
