Ethan Wallace spends most of his time fishing, and the rest of it sludging through his senior year in high school. Life is simple and sweet, until the afternoon he pulls something strange out of Lake Michigan—a mermaid. Suddenly, his entire world is turned upside down. Because he can't seem to stay away from this particularly alluring mermaid . . . even though it seems insane; even though people are starting to die in nasty ways out on the water. Figuring out what it all means, and escaping with his life, could prove to be the biggest challenge of all.
This was a sweet story about a boy and a mermaid, but it was missing something for me.
I liked the characters in this, although they did seem to maybe make rash decisions at times. I didn’t really love any of them though, and Ethan made a major mistake at one point by trying to take matters into his own hands.
The storyline was okay, but I did feel like the pace was a little slow in places. I liked the romance between Ethan and Amara, and I thought the addition of the murder/mystery was a nice touch.
The ending was happy, but the whole book just felt like it was missing something for me. I didn’t get any tension, and I wasn’t desperate to find out what would happen; it was just okay. 6.25 out of 10
A engrossing read from a new YA author. Not your typical fantasy mermaid novel, this one comes with a mystery inside and a lot of well-researched mer lore. Can't wait for the sequel - because there is more I want to know about these characters. (both the "fishy ones" and the land dwellers.
