Hazelin is the heiress to the throne of Annwin, half dragon and half elf, she is the kingdom's Taint. She was kidnapped in a rush of dangerous times at the age of six and her mother, Queen Feya, was killed by the Black Bloods.
Used by Turned Wizards, in their battles, whom are consumed by their dark magic, she grew up under torture until the age of sixteen when she finally escaped their deadly clutches, and cruel ways.
Now she is on a mission to reclaim her throne and defeat those that threaten to enslave her once again. With the help of her new friends, her father, and a secret member of the Olde Royal Family, she might just find her fate.
She will do whatever it take to get her claws on the throne, but will it be enough?
I wasn't very receptive to the concept of this book, the work as a whole felt flat to me. Characterization was hardly developed and the storyline was every bit as choppy and at some points even hard to follow.
I'm getting very frustrated with the flow of this book. It has an exceptional amount of ""I" strain! As well as a desperate need of a professional editing!
I have been an avid reader since I was in elementary school, and I am in a book club in which we choose the worst second-rate (or third-rate, in this case) books by unheard of authors. I'm not sure how one of my friends stumbled across this thing...
Now, before I get into the actual review and people take me for a complete jerk, I'd like to say that this book, while poorly written and in desperate need of multitudes of editing, has the potential to be good. It's simply not executed well. And I would also like to know how old the author is. If this girl is say, 15 years old, she did an outstanding job; however, it would be hard to believe that it was written by an adult.
I must admit, I did enjoy the concept of a strictly evil protagonist. That's something you just don't see every day. The character development was lacking, in my opinion, and though I had just read an entire book about someone, I felt as if I knew nothing about her. At times, I found it hard to take the story seriously because of the use of names that sound like someone picked a few of their favorite letters of the alphabet and "smooshed" them together. Also, the book was very dry to me. I was tempted, at times, to count the typos I found, and as a woman living with Obsessive Compulsive Disorder, the lack of proper spelling and punctuation, and the overuse of the pronoun "I", reading this was no cakewalk. It was difficult to sit through at times, and the plot has so many holes, it was like reading a slice of swiss cheese.
One last criticism and word of advice: the cover of this book... I read that the author calls herself a professional cover designer or something. Looking at all the covers on her different books listed on this website, I see that there is simply too much going on with each of them. You know those cheesy paperback romance novels that are forever sitting on the shelves of the Walmart book section? No one buys those because they're turned off by the cover. "You eat with your eyes first" applies to the world of literature as well. If someone cooks you dinner that looks unappealing, you're not likely to try it, regardless of how good it will actually taste. Just remember that less is more in this case.
Overall, I think the concept of this work is wonderful, and it has some amazing potential. I think it would be nifty if a few years down the road, the author takes this work and rewrites it with a bit of revision, and some hardcore spellcheck.
Yeah I was right..I don't like the main character very much but she is definitely interesting. I gotta say I was very entertained. It's a new concept. Not the usual anti-hero thing most novels have..it's more like she's mostly evil with streaks of goodness. She seems to never hurt her friends but one does know it's purely by chance. When she's in a rage she isn't able to discern friend from foe. I can't believe she ate Night! Okay I actually laughed at that but only because she spit him out immediately! Anyway it was fun, terrifying and one of a kid novel. I can't wait to read more!
