Gwas can outrun a horse, knows how to hide and steal, but is ignorant of the ways of men. The last thing he expects when he is rescued from a miserable existence by a blue-eyed, blond haired angel is to be promised as a Druidic sacrifice to Eostre. Unfortunately, the only direction Gwas wishes to flee is straight into the arms and knife of his savior, Gareth.

Maura knows Gareth is no angel, but she adores him with a passion that time and loneliness cannot dent. When he rides in carrying an injured lad who fears her on sight, she is drawn to open her heart to the abused orphan as well.

Gareth is caught between his liege lord and brother’s fist, and an emotional dilemma that grows harder and harder to deny with every passing season. If he must defy man and gods in order to embrace his heart’s desires, so be it.

When the clash of old and new religions puts lives in peril, ultimate sacrifice bears witness to enduring love. Winter gives way to spring, and the evolution of a colorful myth spreads across the land.

I believe I had won this book in a giveaway quite some time ago and had finally gotten a chance to read it. This was the first book I had the chance to read by this author so I went into it not knowing what to expect at all. One of the things I love about reading a book by a new-to-me-author is having absolutely no idea what you are getting yourself into at all. Will the book be really good or will the book really… well, suck. In the case of this particular book I am happy to report it did not suck! In fact, it was really good!

This book told a very good story that touched on so many different things. It had abuse followed by kindness, hate, love, anger, death, religion, war, murder, life, romance, sexual relations, and so much more. All of these things are so expertly woven in the pages of the story and are based around three main characters though the side characters are also so well defined that even if they only play a very minor background part, you still feel you know them! The author is brilliant at writing her characters and bringing them and their very distinct personalities to life.

Not only does the author bring the characters to life, she also brings the scenery to life through her words. Her descriptions are written in a way in which you are able to see what she wants you to see when it comes to the surroundings of the players in the story. She’s so very good at making the story seem as if it’s playing on a movie screen in your mind rather than written on a page (now there are some bits that are a bit steamy mind you that you may find yourself blushing quite a bit due to this so be warned, but it’s still amazing!).

Although I won’t tell you the story as per my usual review rules (if you’ve read any of my others, you know this): read it for yourself to find out what happens; I will tell you that the story does have some sexual situations in it and it’s a bit steamy so if you aren’t into that you might not be real comfortable with the book but if that’s your thing, it’s completely worth it because the author is a very talented writer who is able to build characters beautifully, created living scenery in your mind as you read, and write one heck of a great story so it would be a shame to miss all of this! For all the reasons mentioned, it deserves the five star rating. I’m going to be checking out what else the authors written because I’d like to read and review another by her as well. I really enjoyed this one!

Ancient World Romance for Mature Audience

It's the year 612. Gwas has known only pain and abuse. His best friend is a rabbit named Bitty. When Gwas' tormentor offers Bitty up to the hounds, he offers his life in her place.

"Gwas did not have a single memory of soft female fingers soothing his hurts. If he had been held or kissed as an infant, he did not remember. He knew for a fact no one had touched him with anything other than slap or fist.

"The growl readying to tear from his throat contained years of pent-up fury. 'That is not right. Let her go. She has done nothing to you or your bloody god. Me. Sacrifice me instead to those beasts.' He shot forward."

Gareth convinces his brother to take Gwas into their home. He changes Gwas' name to Harey.

And so begins a new life for Harey. Although his new beginning is filled with goodness, a shadow falls over it. Even as Harey dreads the coming event, he loves his present life.

Harey, an Ancient World Romance by Arlene Webb, is a wonderful historical romance. Through her characters, Ms. Webb explores the nature of love and gratitude.

Faced with defying all to follow his heart, Gareth must make the choice to throw caution to the wind, or to ignore what he feels. Maura feels deeply for Gareth, full of a passionate need for him. When Gareth returns one evening with Gwas, a naïve, injured young man, Maura’s heart swells, and she feels an overwhelming need to care for him.

Harey was interesting. The author has built a world full of power and religion, which creates an intense situation from the start. There are unique characters, painful sacrifices and passionate sex. The intensity of the relationship between the three main characters, Gareth, Maura and Gwas, gives the story life. However, being a shorter story, I wanted them all to have a longer spotlight. There were moments where a little more detail would have benefited the story, especially when it came to the background of the Gods. That being said though, what’s packed into the pages of this book is a powerful love story that I very much enjoyed.
