This book is one of the selections in the reading curriculum called "Making Meaning" that our district uses. Because we are going to teach this story in a few weeks, I picked up this book to start reading and analyze the text. This is a non-fiction story on T-Rex and contains tons of academic language; there are not only brick words written in bold but also mortar words that I would want my students to attend to, such as past perfect vs. past tense, relative adverb, figurative words, use of derivational morpheme and so forth. I think I would first read this book having students focus on the content doing some non-fiction comprehension activities such as I Remember and Say Something, and then focus on language structures/forms later. This story has a number of pictures of the author's research and discoveries of T-Rex with captions and a lot of details. It also provides a resource guide so students can further research about T-Rex.
