The quiet village of Glidon awoke one morning to the shock of a double murder. Two seemingly unrelated deaths. The only witness was a Czech au-pair, who was convinced that she was the intended target. She befriends Sam Lucas who agrees to help her. Before Sam can do any real good, the girl disappears. This takes him on a journey to Prague and France to find the girl and uncover the identity of the murderer.

Sam finds a friend in the guise of DCI Terry Long, a Detective with more than a few skeletons of his own.

Meanwhile, the village is not all it seems to be, a long running feud between two families is brought to an head after a gruesome discovery and a piece of scrub land becomes an important factor in settling a long running dispute.

In this new fast paced thriller, Sam is faced with difficult decisions once more, which not only threaten the life of the girl but also his own, especially when the reason is not business but personal.

This novel contains a sub plot which is totally unrelated to the main story. It has a surplus of stereotypes, malapropisms and apostrophes. Added together these make a tedious read.

Czech Mate

Czech Mate, by author, Tim Immins, starts out with a hook that immediately grabs the reader. It's impossible not to move forward in this incredible book after reading the opening prologue. The story takes place in Gideon; two pubs, a post office and a shop that sells everything the villagers could possibly need. Yet, the idyllic village of Gideon, like many small towns, holds its secrets . . . until the murders.

Amanda, a university administrator, is impressed by Conrad Haly, Director of companies funded by the National Health Service, and becomes obsessed with working for him. She lands the job, which requires her to turn hospital profits into profitable businesses. The novel deals with the Eastern countries’ inclination to procure the migration and integration of foreign workers to benefit countries short of employment positions; but by using practices not always aboveboard. Her husband, Richard, wonders why his company has targeted him for this job and is told that his respectability keeps him from suspicion. Richard is appalled. The couple’s work schedules necessitate the importance of hiring a nanny for their two young sons.

When Helena NovaKova appears literally on their doorsteps with a letter of introduction from Plural International, Amanda and Richard are surprised, yet Helena’s explanations seem logical. Amanda is thrilled with her, but a perplexed Richard cannot recall signing on at an agency while in Prague — yet here she is and since the boys, Giles and Thomas take to her — she's here to stay. Richard decides to keep the events in Prague to himself . . . something he may regret.

Author, Tim Immins, writes a fast-paced suspense, full of feuds, graft, greed and revenge. His plotting takes on new twists as each page turns and the ending comes full circle. This is an excellent novel for readers looking for a thriller that grabs and entertains from the beginning to the end, played out much like a game of chess.

I picked this up on a free day from one of the daily kindle deals. I'm not really sure what attracted me to it in the first place. After re-reading the synopsis, it is not the type of book I usually read, but I thought I would give it a try.

I was not hooked by the opening. It read as pretty formulaic - here's a town, there are some murders, find the killer. It almost reads as a regurgitation of events similar to a crime serial tv show. I wanted to know more about the characters and their feelings, especially Helena.

Part of the problem I had finishing it was that I just wasn't invested. I expected the family feud to be more developed, and was a little disappointed in how it was treated. I do understand why, but it left me wondering what got cut out by the editor.

1 – Couldn’t finish

2 – Finished, but with great difficulty

3 – Liked, but had some issues along the way

4 – Really liked and will readily recommend to friends

5 – Near flawless, among my favorite reads

Long, rambling tale to nowhere

Immins feels the need to give a full backstory on every character you meet. It got so bad, I forgot what the original story was about. There's also a story within the story that has nothing to do with the title story. I'm really not sure what Immins was trying to accomplish here. I won't be reading more.
