भगवतीचरण वर्मा ने अपने प्रथम उपन्यास पतन की रचना अपने कॉलेज के दिनों में की थी जो गंगा पुस्तक माला के अन्तर्गत प्रकाशित हुआ। इस उपन्यास को वे अपनी अपरिपक्व रचना मानते थे, उन्होंने इसे अपनी रचनाओं में गम्भीरता से नहीं लिया ।

सन् 1932 में भगवती बाबू ने पाप और पुष्य की समस्या पर अपना प्रसिद्ध उपन्यास चित्रलेखा लिखा जो हिन्दी साहित्य में एक क्लासिक के रूप में अज भी प्रख्यात है। तीन वर्ष उनका प्रथम सामाजिक उपन्यास है जो एक प्रेमकथा है। सन् 1948 में उनका प्रथम वृहत उपन्यास टेढ़े-मेढ़े रास्ते आया जिसे हिन्दी साहित्य के प्रथम राजनीतिक उपन्यास का दर्जा मिला। इसी श्रृंखला में उन्होंने आगे चलकर वृहत राजनीतिक उपन्यासों की एक श्रृंखला लिखी जिसमेँ भूले-बिसरे चित्र, सीधी-सच्ची बातें, प्रश्न और मरीचिका, सबहिं नचावत राम गोसाईं एवं सामर्थ और सीमा प्रमुख हैं ।

भगवतीचरण वर्मा के सभी उपन्यासों में एक विविधता है। उन्होंने हास्य-व्यंग्य, समाज, मनोविज्ञान और दर्शन सभी विषयों पर उपन्यास लिखे। कवि और कथाकार होने के कारण वर्मा जी के उपन्यासों में भावनात्मकता और बौद्धिकता का सामंजस्य मिलता है। चित्रलेखा में भगवती बाबू का छायावादी कवि-रूप स्पष्ट दिखता है जबकि टेढ़े-मेढ़े रास्ते को उन्होंने अपनी प्रथम शुद्ध बौद्धिक गद्य-रचना माना है ।

रचनावली के इस खंड में प्रस्तुत, साहित्य अकादमी द्वारा पुरस्कृत उपन्यास भूले-बिसरे चित्र अतीत के चित्रों का एक विशेष एलबम है जिसके चित्र कभी धुँधले नहीं पड़ सकते। जीवन के सभी पहलुओं से रू-ब-रू कराता यह कालजयी उपन्यास है।

Completed this book in a long stretch, from July to September(can only read so much in a plant library). It only seems apprpriate enough, as the timeline of the book stretches across more than 50 years, spanning through 4 generations of a family, against the backdrop of birth of Indian nationalism at the turn of the century(the 20th, that is). It feels like you've lived a whole life through it.

After I got sufficiently engrossed into the book, it kept reminding me frequently of another book: War & Peace. To me, it is the War and Peace of India- the epic saga of a family(with many families and characters coming and exiting the stage) through the generations, an expansive, frightfully accurate and natural, almost Tolstoy-like, gaze at the society of that time, stories of family, bonds, love, hate, friendship, rebellion, Hindu vs. Muslim sensibilities, generation change, and everything set against, and into, the rising national conscious of a colonized young India, led by Gandhi and Nehru.

एक ऐसी पुस्तक जो आपको एक सदी में होने वाले परिवर्तनों को बताने का प्रयास करती है। कहानी चार पीढ़ियों में पीढ़ी दर पीढ़ी आने वाले सभी प्रकार के बदलावों: भौतिक बदलावों, मानसिक बदलावों एवं अन्य बदलावों का बेहतरीन तरीके से चित्रण करती है। कहानी पराधीन भारत की सामाजिक, राजनीतिक एवं आर्थिक स्थिति को भी बहुत ही सजीव तरीके से दर्शाती है। समाज में स्त्री की स्थिति और समय के साथ उसमें आने वाले परिवर्तनों को भी कहानी साथ लेते हुए चलती है। स्वतंत्रता के लिए चल रहे संग्राम ने कैसे-कहाँ और कब करवट बदली और इसका जन-मानस पर क्या क्या प्रभाव पड़ा इसका भी बहुत ही सटीक चित्रण किया गया है। बेहतरीन पुस्तक!

Truly a masterpiece. Even his other great book "Chitralekha" is nowhere near it. This is story of 4 generations of a family spanning about 50 years in the backdrop of freedom struggle. Book is not about freedom struggle, it is about how conscience of India is changing. Most of the characters are ordinary middle class human beings who are not above their weaknesses yet there is some inherent goodness about them which attracts you. This is the best Hindi novel I have ever read.
