The Lonely Hearts #4

The Contingency Plan

Rate this book
How many times do you hear about a woman asking a man to father her child via artificial insemination? The concept is so common until it barely garners any notice. But how often does a multi-millionaire, blue blood, heart throb ask Charlene “Charlie” Meadows to donate her eggs to mother his children? Just once. And it’s enough to make for one hell of a story.

Charlie is a dedicated solider to the cause of the Democratic Party. As an intern, she gives one hundred percent to the Orrin campaign, and after hours, she gives one hundred percent to campaign manager, Sullivan Orrin. Their connection is undeniable, and in her mind, they could be together forever. Only all that changes when the man of her dreams is offered his dream job.

Sullivan “Sullly” Orrin is no regular man. An alpha male from head to toe with the fine finishing of an upper-class family and an Ivy League education, he is set-up and expected to succeed. As a former playboy, he’s not ready when a young black girl from South Florida nearly derails his plans and makes him fall in love. So what does he do? Run. Only he can’t run far enough from true love. It catches back up with him nearly a decade later when he realizes that traditional relationships don’t work for him. Opting to use InVitro Fertilization to start his own family, he has to pick the perfect woman. And there is only one candidate that he has in mind. Too bad she’s engaged.

Now Sully has to grovel and beg to get what he wants, and Charlie is now the successful woman that she always promised she would be. Convincing her won’t be easy, and even if he does get her eggs, will it only make him want more?

Read the fourth book in national bestselling author Latrivia S. Nelson’s Lonely Heart Series, The Contingency Plan for a story that spans nearly two decades between polar opposite lovers who can’t help but attract in a romance that proves that even the best laid plans still have to be tested by life.

So do I succumb to peer reviews or go with my heart? Heart wins.

I really really loved this book. Oh my gosh. How romantic is it for a man to love you so much that he wants your babies despite knowing he can't have you too? I loved this book. Please give it a chance (and I do not know this author nor was I paid for this).

I am a big fan of this author but this book just did not do it for me. The story was just crazy I just could not understand why Charlie would agree to give her eggs away to a man she loves and never bother to find out what happened. Sully I could relate to because he loved her and wanted any part of her but to me this story was crazy. I really respect this author but this book is just crazy.

OK. I haven't read other reviews for this book, so I don't know what others are saying, but I feel as though I've missed something. I always hate to give an IR book a poor rating because there aren't that many really good, meaty ones out there. But, what gives? I'll tell anyone that based on my reading of Ms. Nelson's previous books, she is an extremely talented writer. That being said, I just could not enjoy this book. I will not go into details about the story because there would be spoilers. Therefore, I'll just state what I did or did not like about this novel.

Let me start off by saying that there are some things, IMHO, that typically, black woman just would not do or put up with. Pair her up with a white man, and, well, there are some things that would not even fall within the realm of "I'll think about it." In a situation that occurred in the book, “I probably would have told the guy that he was out of his f-king mind and see ya!!!”

While this story started out OK, and might have had potential (with the political career angle), it just turned plain weird. The plot was so beyond far-fetched, I just shook my head, rolled my eyes and said, no f-ing way!! A work of fiction does not have to be 100% believable for it to work for me; however, there are some basic, very practical limits that I expect will be observed (with the exception of fantasy, paranormal, and sci/fi, etc.,). For example, the fact that
Sully (WM) would have remained single and in love with Charlie (BW) for over 11 years is beyond my ability to comprehend. They hadn’t been in contact with each other during those years. That Charlie was never curious about whether her donated eggs were ever used is totally incredulous to me. There were at least a dozen or more instances like this that almost compelled me to abandon and not finish the book. Nevertheless, I trudged through it.

Moreover, another unpleasant surprise is that I didn't really connect with Sully and Charlie as a couple or individually until near the end of the book--and that is very unusual in the books I've read by this author. I just wasn't invested in them or their future together---and where was the romance??? The writing wasn't bad; however, the plot line simply tanked this book. There is very little that I liked about it. I have read all of the books in the lonely heart series and loved every last one of them------except this one.

I have mixed feelings about this book. On one hand many parts were unrealistic and just surface plots and on the other, I couldn't stop reading so I could see what happened. Every single one of the main characters had morality issues at one point or another. Charlie's actions were ridiculous a majority of the times and I couldn't believe how she came to be in the IVF situation and how she handled the aftermath of it. I liked Sully and even though he had his issues, I couldn't blame him for all of the problems that Charlie and Alex had. Charlie was just wrong on so many levels towards the end of the book.

The ending was a WTH moment? I could not see it happening in real life. It just made me feel that something was missing and the story should have dug deeper.   As I said, even though I was annoyed with all the characters at one point or another, I finished it in one evening and I am not sorry that I read it.

Ms. Nelson is the author of the Medlov Crime family series and my GR friends, probably, know that I have an unnatural love for all things Dmitry. This book would not stop me from reading more from Ms. Nelson.

2.5 rounded up.

The good news, the author wrote The Contingency Plan about five years ago. The author’s storytelling ability has since then improved.

The bad news, I unfortunately did not enjoy The Contingency Plan.

Charlie simply did not captivate me as a woman struggling with love. She seems emotionally stunted. There lacks little romance with the husband, and even with the former lover. I miss the emotional connection I normally feel while reading the author’s other books.

I will say I liked Sully best of all as a character. He served his purpose in the book well despite the initial immaturity and ambition. I did enjoy Charlie success, but it couldn’t make up for what was missing in her characterization. The author didn’t allow Charlie and Sully to grow together in a natural and organic pace. It seemed rushed and unrealistic.

I would recommend the author’s later books particularly the Medlov series.

First off, this cover is absolutely ridiculous. To the story, it was cute but a tad unbelievable. I mean, maybe there is a man out there like Sully, but I doubt it. That being said, I had to suspend reality a bit to get into this. While my reality was suspended I enjoyed the story of lovers able to reunite after nearly two decades apart. On to the ending, who in their right mind would decide to co-parent with their ex's mistress? There would be a factor of trust and all that that would come into play. This brought me crashing back to reality and left me feeling middle of the road at the end. In the end, I enjoyed the idea of the story, just not so much the finer details. This book was worth the time as long as you are looking for something middle of the road, just to pass the time.

I am a big fan of Latrivia S. Nelson but this book did not do it for me. I couldn't connect with characters. The timeline makes it almost to unrealistic. After 18 years you end up with your true love, really?

I loved this story

Second chances are always there when contingency plans are made. Charlie's contingency plan was to marry Alex Mendoza after the love of her life Sullivan Orrin chose politics over her. But he loved her enough to ask her to help him in a way that they were not expecting eleven years down the road. With Charlie being the president of a nonprofit, Sophie's Choice put strains on her marriage with Alex. He was not able to grow with the success of his wife and felt left behind. Things got even more complicated when her arrangement with her former lover Sully, came to light in an explosive way. Neither Alex nor Charlie could claim they were innocent parties in their marriage. Charlie came to the conclusion that she found that she could not continue the life she was living. In the end, everybody got their happy ending with a blended family that no longer required contingency plans.

I loved this story. It had me all in my feelings with the emotions it brought out. It just goes to show one that some people are in your life for a season and some for a lifetime. Life just has to play its program out to reveal itself.

Excellent

This author's work is like a fine wine, just getting better and better over time. I have to be honest read these books out of sync, but every time I complete one book I think the next will not be as good. Wrong, the next is as good if not better. Storytelling at it's best. The storyline hooks you and I just can't predict what will happen next. This author's work ticks all the boxes, what a real good book should. I can't recommend her books enough. A real worthy author for our reading group.

Excellent Read!

I enjoyed reading this book! I didn't like how Sully didn't stand up to his brother when it came to his life. I loved how Charlie didn't wait around and will because of the decision Sully made without her. I really enjoyed how this story was written. I know everyone who reads this book will enjoy it also! Definitely a book worth sharing!

Much better than expected. This author keeps surprising me with her incredible endings. I thought I knew what to expect but once again I could not know what would happen.

Follow your heart!

Things happen in life that you're not prepped for but this book is just for people with those things. I love the respect level that each character has. A family is made of loving people...period! Great read.

The author said she wrote this book while she was going through a divorce. Out of this series (Lonely Heart Series) this one is my least favorite. I could not read this book a second time.

I am a big fan of Latrivia Nelson's stories. I love the 'Chronicles of young Dmitry Medlov' and I am head over heels for the Medlov Crime Series. But even I don't know how to interpret this story. o.O

I felt the real and gritty moments that Latrivia is known for, and I even felt the story book moments that are also expected from this story and author. While I had no problems reading this story in one sitting, I still don't know what to make of it all. I didn't hate it and I don't not like it either (totally redundant), but I just don't understand it enough to pick a side.

Years in this book was treated like days and I kept counting on my fingers to make sure I got the time difference correct. In retrospect, this whole story is split in three parts. Their beginnings, their secret arrangement and their reconciliation. None of these times passed without a span of eight or eleven years in between. And with their age, that's some time.

I loved them initially and felt like they just both didn't fight for each other. But then my emotions swayed between all of these characters, because I would have believed this story more if it ended differently. The situations were semi-every day life choices and results but the ending was story book 101.

Charlie ... I prefer her alias, is actually lovable. She might not have the best reasoning's or make the best decisions, but I do love her character. She is a feminist, but a more subtle one, and I also love the shift in balance where a woman was in power, as oppose to the husband. This was another conflicting situation that brought about the many complex layers to this story.

Build ups and problems were so of this world. They were real, gripping and open to so much interpretations, but the end result kind of left me stumped. It's also not what I come to expect from Latrivia, because as fair as she is, someone always draws the short straw.

All the men in this book were near perfect, even with their many imperfections. Alex was ... let's chalk it up to lonely. He had no excuse for his behavior, as loneliness in my book, is never an excuse. Honestly, he is a prick! His reasons were invalid and as medieval as it gets. Grow a pair and support your strong willed wife, instead of dipping in another pool for Christ sake! I know she was wrong also, but so was he. Thing is, he started it first! (childish I know, but truth nonetheless).

And then we get to Sully. I think he got too much of an easy ride, and was the catalyst for every single messy situation in this book. Or most of them anyways. But still, you love the whole lot of them. They are not perfect. They make serious mistakes that mess with their children lives, and if you look at this from a practical, and not romantic way, the twin boys got the short end of this stick. They are now in unfamiliar territory, and they in actuality lost their family, to invade a new one. They might not feel it now, but by they hit their teens ...it's sure to show.

Overall though, if you erase the too sweet ending, this was a good book that kept you interested, whilst highlighting, some every day issues. There was angst, pain, friendship, love and above all else ... forgiveness. A ridiculous amount of forgiveness actually!
Maybe we should overlook the status quo and try to be more like the Mendoza/Orrin bunch. They sure find a way to figure it all out.

**Possible Spoilers** This was book 4 in Nelson's Lonely Heart series, and overall it was ok. I think what I enjoyed most about this book was the fact it was broken into 3 parts instead of the 2 I was expecting. The 1st part was the initial intro of our main characters, Charlie and Sully, and their secret relationship. The 2nd part took place 7 years after the two had gone their separate ways and ended up reconnecting for business reasons, and the 3rd took place 11 years after that period, after some more events had taken place and then even more saw the two once again reconnecting, but for more personal reasons. This wasn't a bad read, there were some funny parts, some sad parts, some parts that made me angry or made me think someone was being an ass!!! I have to say, the scene in the last part when Charlie and Sully and Alex were in her office and the two men were fighting was a hoot, completely overly dramatic and hilariously embarrassing for Charlie!!! I enjoyed this series overall, but book 3 The Grunt was still my favorite. If you are looking for a bunch of quick easy simple reads, you should check out Nelson's Lonely Heart series.

Don't get me wrong, but I love Latrivia Nelson's books. I absolutely loved Dmitry's Closet (The Medlov Crime Family, #1) by Latrivia S. Nelson The Grunt by Latrivia S. Nelson & Finding Opa! (The Lonely Heart Series) by Latrivia S. Nelson .

The book could have been better, but then again, perhaps I am just a little too picky...

Although I felt that this could have been better, it did have some really great moments of brilliance.

Giving this one 3 stars.

I wish we could give half stars, since I felt this was more of a 2.5 star read. The editing issues began to irritate me after a while. There were little mistakes (one letter typos) then there were worse mistakes like calling Sully, Charlie. I liked the concept of missing out on love and trying to come to terms, but the story went in a direction that I am not a supporter of. While I liked parts of the book, I am an advocate of marriage and did not like several things that happened in the book because of my convictions. Despite that, many may enjoy the read. I found the ending to be, just weird and unbelievable. Who does that?

I enjoyed this series and I particularly love Sullivan"Sully" Orrin and Charlene Meadows story. The author did a great job of building the character's story, that made it believable and interesting.

Even though Sully and Charlie went their separate ways and built lives of their own, their love prevailed. The story came together for me, in spite of love delayed, which made it even more beautiful when everyone got their HEA.

Awesome read

This story had me trying to guess the next move, and I'm happy to say I was wrong every time. Read it in one sitting, couldn't put it down. I don't give spoilers, but no one got on my nerves in this book. Well thought out subject, and exceptional fleshing out of main characters. Great read.
