What started as a routine contact stop turned into a brutal double homicide.
Officer Sam Morgan had worked for the Denver PD for five years, most of which were spent patrolling the streets around the State Capitol. He’s seen his share of druggies, dealers and hookers, but since some of them were his best sources, he normally wasn’t quick to arrest them.
On a hot June Saturday night, Sam was sharing his patrol car with a ridealong, which could be a blessing or a curse. Things went smoothly until they came face-to-face with a hooker and her pimp. Sam stopped to talk to the pair, but when his backup arrived, the atmosphere changed from curious to angry and aggressive. Suddenly, the pimp pulled a gun, and after exchanged gunfire, the other police officer and the pimp were both dead and Sam was seriously wounded. The ridealong had saved the day by retrieving a dropped pistol and shooting the pimp before he can get a fatal shot at Sam. In the confusion, the prostitute disappeared into the night.
The ridealong, Brian, a reporter for The Denver Post writes a compelling first-hand account of the incident which turns out to be his big break.
Kate, the hooker, tries to convince Sam, as he recovers from his wounds that she isn’t a really a prostitute, but he doesn't believe her. She tells him she’s an actress, hired by the dead pimp to be on the streets that night for the filming of a TV show. As the weeks pass and it becomes clear that someone is out to either frighten her enough to leave Denver or to kill her, Sam begins to believe her story.
Joining together, the cop and the actress uncover many inconsistencies and even more suspects. Along the way, they also discover a sexual attraction that quickly turns into even more than either of them had bargained for.
As they get closer to the truth, the threat escalates until Kate finds herself fighting for her life. It’s up to Sam to save her, but will he be in time?
Hooker to lover or low-life to no-life. It’s all in his hands.
Kathy Clark has always been a storyteller. She completed her first novel when she was four years old and self-published it the same year. The Little Black Horse That Ran Away was self-illustrated and sold out of its first printing. Thanks Mom!
Since then, a total of twenty-three novels published by Dell, Crown, and Harlequin happened. With her husband Bob Wernly as a co-writer, they published (both traditionally and epub) an additional fourteen novels.
Nine of these fourteen books were self-published in the romantic suspense, young adult and erotic romance genres. The remaining five published by Random House LLC as the Denver Heroes and Austin Heroes, released in 2015 and throughout 2016.
The author team are currently developing a new contemporary romance series (with a suspense backdrop) titled Breathless. High altitude, high stakes, and high romance, the series will begin in 2017 with the first book, Fools Gold. The series is set in Cripple Creek, Colorado.
Their young adult genre series, Time Shifters, is a time travel romance-mystery series. The fifth book in the award winning series, Not My Life releases 10.18.16.
Finally, their new adult romantic suspense series, Scandals, currently has the first three books released.
With two people developing ideas, plotting, researching, writing and editing, Kathy and Bob are both busy and productive. To be perfectly honest, Kathy and Bob would rather be riding horses, sitting on a sandy beach, watching movies or plays, and playing a round of golf every few days. But the voices in their heads insist on coming out, so they keep writing.

Listed as the first book in Denver Heroes and A Denver After Dark Suspense series by Kathy Clark. Officer Sam Morgan is out on the streets and makes a stop to check on a hooker and her pimp when everything goes terribly wrong. People get killed and Sam ends up in the hospital. Then the hooker shows up at the hospital and claims she is an actress. When Sam is able he goes looking for her. Kate McKinney says she was hired to play the part. But who hired her and why?
This story had some holes and while I'm not in law enforcement I felt some things just didn't seem feasible to me. The heroine didn't seem very bright to me either. The "mystery" wasn't much of a mystery since I guessed the whodunit fairly early in the story. But overall the story itself was written in an easy to read manner and paced nicely. I think I would read more by this author.
With millions of copies sold in romance genre across 23 books and many languages, Kathy Clark is a well known figure. This time, Kathy decided to do a genre swing for her 24th book. "After Midnight" is a suspense novel, first in the series of three (Denver after Dark). As the book contains explicit sexual scenes, it is recommended for adults only.
The story starts on Colfax Street when a normal police errand turns into a bloody night. Sam Morgan is fallen on ground, with two shot wounds, one on chest and another one on shoulder. Little farther is his pal Larry Resnick dead in cold blood with a single bullet embedded into his throat. The attacker has been shot dead by news reporter, Brian. & only one person could have the answers for what was happening, Kate.
While picking up this book, I was expecting it to be an interesting suspense novel. However, not only did it live up to my expectations but inclusion of some steaming romantic scenes were a positive surprise.(which I think is to be expected from Kathy).
The writing style of Kathy is flawless, an essential prerequisite in a good suspense novel.I personally liked this book for several reasons like good story line, clever inclusion of great twists all the while etc. The book is thoroughly and well edited, something that newer eBooks lack these days.
On concluding notes I can say that it’s a good book if you are looking for suspense-cum-romance novel, and it deserves 4 out of 5 points. :)
I love books that start off by throwing you right into the action and After Midnight did not disappoint in that regard. That being said, the whole book just fell a little flat for me.
Sam is a Denver police officer that loves patrolling the streets at night. He's out doing his nightly rounds when his ride-along points out a hooker and suggests they stop. What should have been a quick, routine stop turns into a lot more than anyone bargained for, leaving two people dead and Sam in the hospital.
Kate is an actress in Denver that's supposed to be playing the role of a hooker for an easy $100 cash. Except when bullets start flying and her "pimp" and a cop end up dead, she's not sure what she's supposed to do. Wracked with more guilt than she can handle, she visits Sam in the hospital but leaves when he doesn't believe her that she's not a real hooker.
Eventually Sam finds out who Kate really is and after they get past the initial hooker awkwardness they end up in a tentative relationship which quickly escalates when they realize that Kate's in danger. There's a lot that happens to Kate in such a short amount of time but Sam remains her rock throughout it all.
Of course their relationship is questionable because of everything that's been happening and neither is sure where it will lead once the danger dies down but there is one chapter where Sam's ex shows up out of nowhere and I really could have done without that. I mean, she was there which had Kate questioning how Sam really felt, then it wasn't brought up again... I just didn't understand the significance and that really bugged me.
Then, of course, we have the villain who was so obvious to me that it was a little disappointing. I had him pegged from the get-go, yet it took Sam, who's a cop, an entire book to put two and two together. I know, I know, there wouldn't have been a story if he figured it out right away but I really wish it wasn't so obvious. A little suspense would have been nice, ya know?!
While the suspense was lacking, the action in this one definitely wasn't which is the reason I was able to give it three stars. Even though I knew who the villain was, it was interesting to see how it would all play out in the end. Overall, After Midnight was a decent read and I might pick up the next book in the series.

Her eyes had been following her fingers, and it was obvious that she saw the masculine bulge pressing against his running shorts. Her gaze lifted to meet his again.
“Careful,” he warned. “I’m not a saint, you know.”
“Neither am I.” Her fingers moved lower and splayed apart as they stroked down the length of his erection.
Sam reached down and captured her hand. “You don’t have to do this to thank me.”
“Shut up and kiss me,” she whispered, the softness of her voice taking the edge off the harshness of her words.
Sam gave up. He had been attracted to her since the first moment he laid eyes on her. And now she was lying in his bed, as sexy as hell and wearing nothing but that damn silk robe.
“Yes, ma’am.”
4 STARS- After Midnight is the first book in Denver After Dark, Romantic Suspense series by author Kathy Clark. I actually read the second book in the series, Cries in the Night, several months ago and finally got around to reading After Midnight when I noticed I was able to borrow it as part of the Kindle Unlimited program. Although the main characters in both books are brothers and the stories are sequential, the stories will work fine for a stand-alone.
Overall, I really enjoyed the story. I love a damsel in distress and a hero in uniform so this book scored on both fronts. It's been a while since I read the second book but I think After Midnight was a bit more of a sexier read although it is not sex heavy. The sexy parts were well done and the author did a good job of balancing out the romance and the suspense. The story is well written and I liked both characters. I definitely plan to read the third book in the series when it releases, hopefully later this year.
Note: At the time this review was posted, this book was available to borrow through Amazon's Kindle Unlimited program.

We all know the life of a street cop is dangerous, and when one of your own go down, it is devastating. But what if you watch him go down in front of you, and you are also wounded?
Officer Sam Morgan was out on his usual patrol with a ride along when they stopped to try to get a hooker off the street corner. When his backup arrived, a friend in the force, the pimp emerged out of the darkness and things went out of control.
The hooker, who really was an actress, Kate was in shock at what she witnessed, especially when the ride along took a gun and fired at the pimp, killing him. When Kate heard the sirens, she blended into the background in an effort to get away unnoticed. Concerned for the wounded officer, she went to the hospital the next day to check on him. What little they saw of each other sparked a romance that neither would own up to for fear of being hurt.
But who was this pimp, and why did he shoot to kill? Sam was determined to find out. Along the way, his desire for Kate increased, but she seemed to be a magnet for trouble. Someone tried to run her off the road, break into her apartment and other circumstances that should not continue to happen for no reason. The more Sam digs, the more he finds out, and the more their relationship blossoms.
As the story unfolds, you will begin to put together who is the cause of all this, or at least have your suspicions who it is. While the detailed intimacy between Sam and Kate could have been scaled back a bit, it does show their desire for each other. Minimal amount of characters make it easy to follow, but also easy to play detective yourself. Great detail for making you feel like you are there, seeing all they see, doing all they do, feeling all they feel. Good who-done-it for those who like a good mystery.
After Midnight was originally self published released in '12 under the same name but under the series name Denver After Dark, it was picked up by LoveSwept and changed the series name to Denver Heroes. After Midnight is a great story, I love romantic suspense and this is a nice blend of suspense and romance, it was enticing and captivating I just breezed right through it, I could not put it down. It's a great first book, it introduces all the characters and the family dynamics. The Morgan family are all Type A personality types but familial ties are strong.
Sam Morgan patrolled the absolute worst part of Denver, but he didn't care he loved his job and he loved his city. One summer night he had a ride along with him when it went all wrong he ended up getting shot twice and another officer ended up dead as well as one dead pimp. The only other witness beside the ride along is a prostitute who disappeared after back up finally showed up. After Sam was released from the hospital he tracked down this mysterious prostitute, who turns out isn't really a hooker but was paid to play the part of one for that night. Kate McKinney was traumatized by what happened that night but was scared about coming forward because it would reveal who she really is and just who her father is. When Sam tracks her down she is scared of what is going to happen next but he promises it will stay private. Strange things keep happening to Kate and Sam being on medical leave is determined to protect her and get down to the bottom of who hired her and why two people died that night.
Unfortunately I guessed the Who, What and Why right off the bat, but it doesn't take away from the story. Sam and Kate are such a cute couple it's ridiculous it really is a great read.
AFTER MIDNIGHT (DENVER AFTER DARK #1) KATHY CLARK ASIN: B009CGO8N8 Published by KATHY CLARK WERNLY Publication Date: September 16, 2012 244 Pages E Book Genre: Romantic Thriller Rating: 5 stars
The book started off bringing up a well known area of Colorado that poverty stricken can't even be used to describe. It was not an area of town anybody would want to go to, even if they had to. Sam Morgan was patrolling Colfax Avenue and didn't mind one bit, until one fatal night when a Denver Police ride-along went wrong.
Kate was a prostitute that was hired for the night but didn't expect the killing that would happen. She was devastated by a killing initiated by a dear friend. She had no idea what had happened or why. She was a beautiful girl that had never had a role like this before, and never would again.
This plot was better than Law and Order or CSI as it was very well written. The environments were suspenseful and you will be thrilled when each new instance happens. The book flowed so well that I couldn't wait to hit the next page button. This book also makes you want for another.
I liked the characters in this book a lot because they were very straightforward and blunt in a comical way. They also knew how to hold back when times called for it. Definitely a crime mystery, romance thriller, and suspense that I want to see for many years to come if possible. Everyone in this novel was believable and Kathy Clark knew what she was doing as she researched a well written book that had such charismatic characters that made me want to meet them in person. This is a great read! Left me smiling and my heart soaring!

After Midnight is the first book in the Denver Heroes Series and it is a very good start. The story had a different spin than the usual romantic suspense novels that I have read. While I have to admit that I figured out who the villain was early on, I was still very much interested in seeing how or when everyone else would figure it out. There was plenty of steamy action between the sheets to increase anyone’s interest level. The characters were very likeable and the book was hard to put down. That’s a combination that is pretty hard to beat.
Denver Patrol Cop Sam Wilson has his entire world turned on it’s head after a deadly confrontation when a supposed pimp leaves his friend and mentor dead and a supposed prostitute named Kate McKinney trying to figure out how she ended up in the middle of all of it. Of course, it just doesn’t stop there. Eventually, Kate’s life begins to unravel and someone starts trying to kill her. Sam and Kate get extremely close as he tries to protect her and figure out what’s really going on. The mystery was actually rather compelling although the clues appear to be right in front of them, It’s like watching a horror movie and knowing who the killer is. I kept yelling at the characters but they wouldn’t listen. Oddly enough, being the informed observer made it fun to read. And being a suspense novel, there’s only so much that I can say without ruining it. I did truly enjoy it and look forward to reading the other books in the series.

After Midnight, is a very well written mystery-romance novel. I look forward to reading more books written by the author, Kathy Clark. The plot of the story held my interest and I found myself thinking of different scenarios as I tried to figure out the reasons for Kate to be the object of danger.
This story has the right ingredients for the perfect recipe of a good and engrossing story. You have Sam, one very handsome and honest cop, and Kate, a very attractive actress with a secret. Also, add Jameel, Kate's actor friend and then, Brian, a ride-along reporter looking for an action story. Mix in Sam’s friend Larry with sudden danger, death, and confusion on Colfax Avenue in downtown Denver!
Now you mix in questions of : Does Kate’s secret identity have anything to do with the murder, is it politically motivated? Is Brian attracted to Kate? What is the connection linking Jameel and Larry?
This was the perfect setting and environment for the author to locate the opening scene. Although I do not live in Denver, I have been there on vacation several times. I have ridden down Colfax Ave late at night just to see if the things I had read in the newspapers and in books were true. It is as the author has described and more. I would not take that drive again. Not only can you witness the prostitutes and drug dealers, but the desperation of the wandering homeless men and women is heartbreaking.
If you are looking for a mystery with a bit of hot romance, you will not be disappointed with “After Midnight”. Enjoy!
After Midnight tells a tale of cops with guns where injuries are real, people die, and the walking wounded don’t get straight up from their sickbeds to fight again. But Sam is determined to find out why his friend died, and there’s definitely something strange about the hooker-who’s-not-a-hooker.
“Car nine, out of service. End of watch. We thank you for your sacrifice...” Powerful words, powerfully portrayed in a funeral that stays with the reader, giving depth and sincerity to this tale. Tragic circumstances are offset with the delightful humor and genuine affection of pitch-perfect dialog, as Sam falls in love, his siblings tease, and a beautiful woman finds her life in danger.
Great characters, great romance, sensual sex scenes, intriguing mystery (yeah, I guessed, but that’s me), and a cool location (made all the better since I’d just visited Denver for the first time before reading)... After Midnight is a fast enjoyable read for mature readers.
Disclosure: I found it when it was free and I’m sorry it took so long to get around to reading it.
This is the kind of book I really like. It started with a bang, then built as the characters began discovering that all was not as it seemed. The cop, the hooker and the reporter were all at the scene of a double homicide. The cop is wounded, the hooker disappears and the reporter becomes a hero because he saved their lives. What should have been an open and shut case is a lot more. The suspense builds until a wild and dangerous ending. Along the way, there are some really steamy love scenes. Good, strong characters. Interesting story with lots of twists and turns. I highly recommend it.
Kate Mckinney was excited when she was hired for a television commercial, until her fellow actor starting shooting at the two police with real bullets, killing one before being killed by a ride-along reporter, Brian Bergen. Now injured, office Sam Morgan wants to know what happened. Will he let his attraction to Kate get in the way of finding truth and justice?
This reader figured out the mastermind by page 100, but it was fun to watch Kate and Sam fumble around.
THE DENVER AFTER DARK IS A STAND ALONE SERIES OF BOOKS ABOUT THE SUPER-HAWT WILSON BROTHERS. PANT,PANT! THIS ONE FEATURES SAM THE VERY, VERY GORGEOUS MIDDLE CHILD OF THE WILSON CLAN. I THINK IT WAS FAIRLY EASY TO FIGURE OUT THE WHO AND WHY THAT SET THIS WHOLE STORY IN MOTION, I DID AT ABOUT 12%. I STILL ENJOYED THE STORY AND THE ROMANTIC PARTS (I usually do) IT WAS MILDLY SEXUAL BUT STILL PRETTY-DAMN-HOT. I LOVE A STAND ALONE ESPECIALLY IF IT JUST HAS TO BE ANOTHER SERIES. YES!;D
SYNOPSIS: After Midnight (Denver Heroes # 1) Perfect for fans of Nora Roberts and Karen Robards, Kathy Clarks suspenseful, seductive Denver Heroes series kicks off as a dedicated cop and a beautiful actress get wrapped up in a world of danger and desire.
Aside from the reporter riding along in the passenger seat of his cruiser, its a typical Saturday night on the job for Sam Morgan of the Denver Police Department. Then shots ring out, and a routine stop involving a pimp and a hooker spirals into senseless violence. Now Sam is lying in a hospital bed, haunted by fleeting memories of the stunning blonde who saved his lifeand then just disappeared.
Kate McKinney was hired to play a prostitute on a reality-TV show, not stand around as actual bullets start flying. Unable to shake the feeling that trouble is stalking her, Kate turns to the only man she can trust: the wounded cop whose blue eyes send chills through her body. He doesnt believe she was just playing a role, but the predator hiding in the shadows is all too realand, as Sam and Kate edge closer to the truth, so is the heat that ignites between them.
CHARACTER BACKGROUND: Kate McKinney is a strong, independent, driven, and graceful woman. All her life she's been living a life that she doesn't want. A career in showbiz is something she's always wanted, and she's willing to give up her sheltered life for a chance to fulfill that dream. But trouble found her and all she can do is depend on a man that made her believe in love at first sight.
Sam Wilson always knows what he wants. He's been a cop for quite some time and has developed a certain routine in life. That didn't include being shot -- several times, -- meeting the woman of his dreams in the most inconvenient way possible, and fearing that he would lose her any minute.
REVIEW: I like reading stories with leading men who aren't millionaires or billionaires. It gives the entire novel a more realistic feel, because...well, not every man who is great-looking and dedicated is filthy rich. After Midnight was well-written, though honestly I've always found books written in third person quite confusing. It's action-packed with a lot of oh-my-gosh-they-almost-died moments, and the romance between Sam and Kate were oh so sweet. Sam is just...dreamy. He's a gentleman, can be dominating when need be, totally charming and shamelessly uses it, and he's just a really great guy. He's the kind of man I would love to be with. He's not perfect and has his own faults, but that's what makes him realistic. Kate's fellow actors are so amazing. For a bunch of people in the acting industry, they're very nice and supportive. It's not something you see often. I just want to point out that the relationship of Kate and Sam struck me as a bit too fast. One minute he's asking her questions about a case, then the next he's kissing her and silently declaring a promising relationship? Yeah, that was tad weird.
3.5 stars for After Midnight. It's romantic, mind-boggling, and exciting.
Kathy Clark’s After Midnight starts out with a bang – almost literally. We meet our police officer hero, Sam Morgan, while on his nightly rounds and escorting a man on a ridealong. Within pages he finds himself shot and his old partner dead after stopping to check on what he thinks is a hooker and her pimp. The pimp who had shot Sam’s old partner is also killed in the fray by the ridealong guest, who is actually a reporter.
As a quick aside, these words are not really in my daily vocabulary, so if “pimp” and “hooker” are too Pretty Woman or Cagney & Lacey, I apologize! I’m sure there are better words I could use (street walker? roxanne? lady of the night?) but I am at a loss! Sorry, I digress…
Anyway, we find out that the hooker Sam saw is not really a hooker, but rather a struggling actress hired to play the part of a hooker. Kate McKinney, the actress, is as confused about the dead cop and dead pimp as Sam is, but they are determined to try to figure out what happened, and to do it together. Pretty soon two things become apparent: 1) Someone is out to get Kate and 2) Kate and Sam have some pretty serious chemistry.
I had high hopes in the beginning of this book. It started out fast-paced and I liked both of the main characters. Unfortunately, I had pretty much solved the mystery by the middle of the book, and spent the latter half wanting to shake Kate and Sam whilst screaming, “It was so-and-so, you dummies!” The hemming and hawing that was done in solving the crime and in the relationship between Kate and Sam dragged on too long and I lost interest in both somewhere along the way.
One other issue I had was that there seemed to be too many side stories that were suddenly brought up without reason or warning. Kate’s dad has presidential aspirations? Sam is has an ex-girlfriend that ditched him? Say what? Since when? It seemed to me that these tidbits could have been better developed or mentioned earlier to help us understand Kate and Sam’s motivations.
Bottom Line While this book was not for me, I do think it could be a good read for those looking for an easy “whodunit?” that they can solve, especially if they like a little sexy time thrown into the mix.
This very first paragraph can, and will, be copy-pasted to the review for CRIES IN THE NIGHT. First, the cover redesign was brilliant. Not that the old covers for these two titles were terrible, but the new ones are just so much more aesthetically pleasing; second, the beginning. My goodness, the beginning...
{ ..and now for original content ;) }
The very first scene in this story will grip you. What seems like a normal night on the job for Sam will turn into a harrowing experience -- and that's saying a lot for this cop who prefers the night shift and he prefers this side of town. Sam is the kind of cop who wants to help everyone -- the good, the bad, the ugly. He drives his cruiser around with the windows down so he can talk to the kids. He's an all around good guy. But on this night, he has a ride-along with him who mentions the prostitute on the corner and where he would typically just leave her be, because he has this guy with him he at least needs to make conversation.
It turns out to be a life changing conversation on more than one front.
Kate is a wanna-be-actress who does small stage things in Denver. She's made friends with a pimp and he's a pretty nice guy, always talking to her and joking around with her. She never expects the one night to turn so sour.
Watching Sam and Kate interact throughout the story was fun -- in the beginning, Sam was concerned about her welfare; a little while later, he was saying not so kind things to her, only to regret them the moment they left his mouth (yet again showcasing his good guy self); and at the end, of course, the falling part.
Sam has struggles to overcome in this story, emotionally and physically, but beyond that, after he starts to want Kate around, he has a case to solve in order to keep Kate safe.
Kate isn't a wilting flower by any means -- she's shaken where she should be, and strong in places you wouldn't necessarily expect it. She was a well-rounded character.
AFTER MIDNIGHT was a great beginning to this series that showcases a few of Denver's finest, showcasing the brothers, Rusty, Sam, and Chris.
This is a new author for me and the premise of romantic suspense set in Denver appealed to me. The first twenty pages of this story had my pulse pounding and plans to go no where till I finished this book.
Sam Wilson is a Denver cop who enjoys his work on the streets. The area he patrols is one of the most dangerous in Denver, Colfax Avenue. Crime, drugs and hookers are everywhere. Colfax Avenue is the longest street in the US, and goes from mansions on one end, to dark and dangerous streets. He's been patrolling the streets long enough, that a lot of the pimps and pushers just nod as he drives by. This particular night he has a civilian ride along who is getting on his nerves. Brian Bergan is a reporter, desperate for a story. Brian convinces Sam to stop at a corner where an obvious hooker and her pimp are standing. Sam steps out to have a talk, and his life will change forever.
Kate McKinney is an actress, working in a run down bookstore, and working in a play at a local theater. For one hundred dollars she is asked to play a part for a single evening with her good friend and fellow actor Jameel. She will be a hooker, he her pimp. Seems simple enough, and she could certainly use the money. But this role turns into a nightmare and she is suddenly running for her life.
The slow build up of the unlikely relationship of Sam and Kate is so real. No love at first sight, just honesty and working to get to know each other, and trying to figure out this mystery. There are three Wilson brothers. Rusty is the oldest, a firefighter. Sam is the middle son and the youngest is Chris, former military medic, now EMT. I'm looking forward to the second in this series Cries In the Night, with Rusty as the main character. I really enjoyed this story and will be looking for more books by this author.
“She believed he liked her, and they certainly got along well. But Kate was worried that their relationship might be one of convenience. She loved living with him, but she was beginning to believe that there should be a separation between genuine feelings and merely falling into a comfort zone that wouldn’t push them further.”
4 powerful, moving stars. I really fell into this book and didn’t come out until it was over. I really fell in love with this book and the characters.
After Midnight is about 1 dead cop, 1 wounded cop, 1 dead pimp, 1 missing hooker, 1 citizen hero caught in the cross fire and 1 actress about to be killed after an ugly night on Colfax Avenue. The first in the trilogy, Denver After Dark, it’s about a Denver Police ridealong that goes horribly wrong. What started as a routine contact stop turned into a brutal double homicide.
Sam is a Denver police officer that loves his job. One night while out patrolling, his ride along points to a woman on the street and suggests that she may be a hooker and to stop. That quick stop turns into two people dead and Sam in the hospital. Kate is an actress and she’s been paid to act like a hooker for a quick $100. But when bullets start whizzing by her head and her “pimp” and a cop end up dead she’s totally unsure of what to do next. Feeling guilty she visits Sam in the hospital to explain her side, but when he doesn’t believe her she flees. He eventually finds her again believes her story and then he realizes that Kate is in danger. Their relationship goes through a lot of ups and downs, exes showing up in the picture and other things. Will their relationship survive to the next level or will it all fall away? I really loved this first book in the series.
A little bit of everything--action, suspense, mystery, attraction, lust, and love--made this a pleasant story but the reality infused into it made it an incredible one.
I liked that it started before Sam was injured, before he watched his partner get gunned down, because his recovery and his partner's funeral are things I've never had the opportunity to experience as a story progresses. The mandatory time off for Sam was common sense. Gun injury means physical therapy means no normal officer duties. But he didn't stop being a cop, especially after he located Kate and got her side of things from that fateful night.
Kate's guilt over that night showed through a good portion of the first half of this story. Before Sam found her and before she gave her statement, she struggled with what to do with what she knew. But she did something incredibly touching despite her internal struggles. She attended the fallen officer's funeral to pay her last respects. Oh, she did it from a distance (I didn't blame her) but I love that she went. It showed me what kind of person she really was more than words ever could.
This isn't an insta-lust story. The attraction is immediate but desiring one another came after spending time together, even if it was originally to keep Kate safe after it became obvious someone was out to get her.
This isn't a dark story either. There is a lot of sadness and grief in it, but Ms. Clark didn't linger on that. She punctured that darkness with light, letting something incredibly good shine through it.
This story begins and end with action. Everything in between kept the momentum going. Ms. Clark is a new author for me and this story is a great opener to her series.
(Received from NetGalley via Tasty Book Tours for an honest review)
Kate was a struggling actress just trying to make it in Denver so that she didn’t have to go back home to Texas. Everything was looking up for her for a change. She may not be living in the best of places but she had an apartment and it was right above the book store that she worked at so you couldn't be the commute and she had finally landed an acting job. No it wasn't Broadway but it was a start and she loved it. So yes, things were finally looking up but being at the wrong place at the wrong time could just cost her everything and that's exactly what happened.
Ride a longs weren’t one of Sam's favorite things to do as a cop but it helped to pass the time during the long over night shifts. This night didn't start off any different with the exception that his ride a long wasn't very talkative and seemed kind of jumpy. It's what happens after midnight though that changes everything. Now he's up against a pissed off pimp and a hooker that looks as though she doesn't belong. When the pimp loses it and starts shooting, it's the citizen that saves him but now he has other things to worry about because his best friend is dead and the hooker is missing.
This was a great book and while it was pretty easy to figure out who the bad guy was from the beginning, it didn't affect the book at all. The characters were great and the plot was a good one. I look forward to reading the rest of the trilogy that hopefully will have something to do with Sam's brothers.
I received an ARC from Random House through Netgalley in return for an honest review.
Cruel and bloody crimes, crazy stalker after the heroine, and budding, passionate romance all mixed with a bit of humor, and you have good entertainment in your hands. The tone of the story is dark and dangerous, the threat towards Kate is constantly present, the attacks escalating in their nature. The attraction and connection between Sam and Kate seem fragile, as Kate's life has been turned upside down, and everything is slipping from her hands. Without help from Sam, she would have to give up, and that puts her on defense, her self esteem frail at the moment. The feelings between them grow and deepen, the fervor of passion sweeping them away. I loved the corny, cliché pick up lines Sam was using constantly. He loves to fix things, take care of people, and protect them. The relationship between him and Kate is fun, flirty, sexy, and joyful, when not being in danger to their lives. The unity of the brothers, closeness, and support they gave each other was admirable, and attractive. The funeral for Larry, a fellow police officer was so touching I was in tears, what a beautiful tribute for all who have lost their lives in a line of duty. Even though the suspense side of the story was predictable for me, I enjoyed the investigation process, as Sam is working to find out who is behind it all. Also the developing romance was fun and lively. ~ Three Spoons
After Midnight is romantic suspense where the romance takes center stage and the suspense subplot just serves to put the heroine (and the hero) in enough jeopardy to make them turn to each other and stick together close enough to solve the mystery and fall in love.
Sam Morgan is a Denver cop who is maneuvered into a street confrontation with a hooker and her pimp. When his partner rides to his rescue, everything goes haywire and his best friend winds up dead. But the situation is nothing as it seemed.
Kate McKinney is an actress and not a prostitute. The scene was supposed to be filmed by hidden cameras, but there were no cameras and her friend is also dead at the scene. Kate disappears.
The set up leaves Sam searching for a mystery woman, and once he finds her, a series of escalating attacks force Sam and Kate together for her protection and to find out which of them is the target, and why.
While the mystery isn’t very mysterious, it is more than enough to keep the reader on the edge of the seat as the protagonists are too blissfully in love (even though they won’t admit it) to see the danger that is stalking them every minute.
Verdict: Recommended for romantic suspense readers who love men in uniform, and their heroines in unwitting danger at every turn.
the book starts off with action right away and leaves you wondering who Kate really is. After a routine stop with a ride-along goes bad, police officer Sam ends up in the hospital wounded from a gunshot and his former partner dead. Kate, a witness to the shooting, wants to be kept out of the spotlight due to her past. Sam's ride-along, a reporter named Brian, is hailed a hero after saving Sam's life. Sam is trying to find the hooker, especially after she visits him in the hospital and tries to tell him that she is really an actress, not a hooker. Brian is also trying to find the hooker, but it is to help with the story. When Sam is released, he is drawn to Kate and feels a need to protect her, especially when bad things start happening to her. Kate starts falling for Sam but doesn't know if his treatment of her is for real or if it is part of a hero complex. Things start to escalate towards Kate and the mystery deepens surrounding the shooting death of Sam's former partner. The mystery and the romance is there and it kept me hooked in trying to figure out who is behind terrorizing Kate and why. I liked the book all the way to the very end but didn't care too much for the ending because it just ends. No epilogue to let me know how things turn out for Kate and Sam.
Sam is a police officer on his way to a coffee break when he stops to talk to who is believes is a prostitute. That stop has damaging consequences for Sam. His instant attraction to the woman sets him on edge and he sets out to find her after she visits him in the hospital. Kate is an actress who is in Denver to be apart of live theatre before moving on to Los Angeles. She has no idea what caused the shooting to happen while she was acting as a prostitute. When Sam finds her sparks fly, but someone else is after Kate in a more sinister way. When her stalker starts leaving notes and little hints that he's watching her, she has to decide if she should leave Denver for LA or stay with Sam. When the identity of the stalker is revealed, Sam and Kate's love will be tested. 1-click today to find out what happens in this amazing story.

“After Midnight” is a suspense/romance novel, the first in the “Denver after Dark Series” . Some explicit sex scenes tasteful but hot be warned.
The story starts with the shooting of two police officer one is dead, the other lucky to be alive mostly because of the reporter who was doing a ride along that night. The mystery is Kate what was she doing on that street corner?
Ms. Clark’s writing is extraordinary and she keeps you on the edge of your seat. I would highly recommend any of her books. If you looking for some suspense, a bit of love and a bit of steam this book is definitely worth the time. I look forward to the next installment!
This story is my first by Kathy Clark and I will definitely recommend it! This story grabs your attention from the first page. Sam is a cop that looses so much with a routine traffic stop. He is determined to get to the bottom of the incident and find answers. Kate has just walked into a nightmare of epic proportions. Thinking she was on an audition things turns dramatically and she quickly realizes this is so much more. As Sam and Kate begin to get closer the danger that Kate finds herself in escalates. The chemistry is hot and Sam is a sweet yet extremely alpha male. A great start to this series.
