First I want to start by saying that I was very skeptical about this book. I have a "thing" about men writing romance. Maybe it's my hangup, but that's how I feel. When A.B. McKinley approached me, I did voice my opinion, but I did say that I would read it then debate my feelings.

In Kilted Desire~ Sands of Betrayal we meet Scotsman, Scott Mclaren, a former British Special Forces soldier who moves to rural Ohio after being badly wounded in Afghanistan and having his wife leave him for another man while recovering from his injuries. While in Ohio, Scott places an online advertisement on a dating website and is quickly found by local almost divorcee and mother of two, Katie Johnson.

Both Scott and Katie are wary at first, but soon their relationship blossoms and they quickly find themselves in love with one another. Scott takes no issue with Katie still being technically married and jumps headfirst into the love affair. Soon Scott sees that he wants to spend the rest of his life with Katie, but in order to do so, needs to be able to take care of Katie and the girls. He takes on a six month contract in the Middle East protecting an American business woman.

Britney Parnell, the American business woman is a spoiled little rich girl who is used to getting what she wants, and she quickly decides she wants Scott. The only saving grace for Britney is that she is smart enough to take all of Scott's advice on her protection. When Scott rebuffs Britney's advances over and over, it only makes her more determined to have him, regardless of the known fact that Scott is with Katie.

Back home in Ohio, Katie is having her own difficulties keeping it all together. Her almost ex-husband refuses any support and she is faced with losing her house. The separation from Scott is hard on Britney but she seemingly holds it together. When she finds out about Britney Parnell she immediately tells Scott she knows the business woman has her sights on him, but Scott laughs it off at first.

There are several twists and turns in this story that have the reader wondering what will happen next. Of course from the title, we know there is a betrayal of sorts but I won't be giving spoilers. I have to admit that I thoroughly enjoyed this story, and finding out that it was 90% factual, just made me enjoy it more. This is A.B. McKinley's first book and at the moment he is writing another. I definitely will be watching Mr. McKinley closely in the future as I feel he has a great career as an author ahead of him.

Not sure what to expect from this romance story. Having read the authors bio, a male and realising this story has elements of his real life experiences. I found myself reading it as if its his diary.

Scott is portrayed as the Fierce Warrior but with a compassionate, gentle loving, romantic side. He is a highly trained military man, recovering from his severe battle scars and a broken heart, when he finds love again. Scott falls deeply inlove with Katie, soul mates he thinks. Wanting to give Katie all she has dreamed of Scott takes on a highly paid but very dangerous job in the Middle East, and more battles for this warrior to face.

This book really has it all from tender loving to Hot and Steamy to adventure and danger, that has you holding your breath. So why 4 stars..... because the story has not ended yet....and now I shall read book 2

This was a short, mildly entertaining read (at least for me, but I read extremely quickly).
Quick plot summary: ex-soldier meet pretty school teach they fall in love and he goes off to take a private security job in a dangerous country so they can have more money. Their love affair is completely covered in the first few chapters of the book, their relationship is already established and you've been told all about it. Enter the person he's been hired to protect, another woman who's attracted to our earnest hero for a bit of tension, that falls a bit flat. And actually that's my biggest problem with the book...

The author tells you everything, every detail from exactly how tall someone is, to exactly what day it was, to where the city is located from a larger, more major hub. This is fine, if it's important to the story, but this was done for every detail, and it usually wasn't needed. This was just extra information that didn't really add anything to the story. It's also done in a very matter of a fact manner, which isn't necessarily a bad thing, but I would have liked to have heard more of the author's real voice coming out. I'd also have liked to have had a bit more showing than just telling. Sometimes the discovery is half the fun when you're reading.

I do feel the need to mention the paragraph problem. I see this a lot, but usually in the opposite direction. Instead of having lots of short paragraphs (you know what I'm talking about, the one sentence paragraphs that happen four or five times a page), the author has plenty of long ones. When I say long, I mean one went on for two and a half of my kindle pages and it could have easily been broken into smaller chunks. Also spotted a few (only a few, and only one sentence, which seemed to be missing a word, actually interrupted my reading) grammar mistakes, but I'm forgiving of those. It's a self-published book and self-editing can be difficult. Overall it's well put together and well formatted.

This is the first book he's written as far as I know, and it's not bad. There's enough glimpses of his voice coming out that I'm interested in seeing what the second book (already available) is like.
Overall, for a first effort this a decent little read (even if it was quick for me).

Loved it, loved it, loved it...did I mention - "I loved it!"

Kilted Desire – Sands of Betrayal
by A.B. McKinley

Some authors tell stories, some paint pictures, A.B. McKinley draws us into his world of love, intrigue and betrayal. Right from his first words on paper you hear Scott’s accent, feel his embrace and sensual kisses with Katie, you feel the urgency when the bomb explodes in Iraq.

As our hearts pound through the streets of Baghdad, will Scott weave his way through the City and keep the woman he is paid to keep safe out of harm’s way?

Honor, Integrity and Charm would be the words I use to describe the main character, Scott Maclaren, as well as sexy, sensual and intriguing! This is a book for both sexes, men will love it as much for the sensual love scenes and all the “going’s on” in Baghdad’s Green Zone… a must read for the men too!

Personally, I do not review all books I read… too many of them I guess. Kilted Desire – Sands of Betrayal is exceptional…I truly hated to turn the last page, I wanted to know more (a sign of an “exceptional” book) The author writes from his heart and soul… a refreshing and delightful combination. I hope this author continues to write for many, many years to come, I look forward to reading many more.

"KILTED DESIRE 1 - Sands of Betrayal" by A.B McKinley, was full of action, suspense, steam and a very sexy Scot in a kilt. I started this book and could not put it down until I finished it in the wee hours of the morning. Our Hero, Scott and our feisty Heroine, Katie just kept me glued to the pages to see what was going to happen next with the trials of their relationship and how the dangerous mission that he was on was affecting both of their lives.

I did not care for Katie at first as I found her too self involved and thought she was only out for herself. My opinion of her did change as the story unfolded.

Scott is the image of every woman's dream... loving, caring, honest & devoted to only one woman.

The story was exciting with lots of action along with a very sensual love story that unfolds between Scott & Katie that takes your breath away.

I highly recommend this book to everyone and I am now going to download the next book to see what kind of trouble Scott gets into in this book. Will the love between Scott & Katie be strong enough to survive?? We shall see what happens in the next book... "KILTED DESIRE 2 - Russian Roulette"

I really liked this book. If you like stories about former military men returning to Iraq to work as a body guard you will like this book. Scott is divorced and Katie is in the process divorce when the meet & the attraction is immediate & intense. In order for them to be able to build a life together, Scott decides to return to Iraq to work as a personal body guard for six months. He is shocked and a little dismayed to find that his client is a beautiful and sexy woman executive named Britney. She is very attracted to Scott and tried to seduce him but he is faithful to Katie. Scott proposes to Katie in one of the most romantic settings. Scott is injured by a car bomb and is in a coma with head injuries for a few weeks. A.B. Mckinley is a new author and I highly recommend this book.

Scott Mcclaren is part of the British Army Special Forces. He's also 100% Scottish. He's the type of man everyone woman dreams she'll have in her life one day. Katie Johnson is a teacher and soon to be divorcee. She's trying to start over, slowly. This book follows the journey these two make and the crossroads they face.

I LOVE THIS BOOK! I won't say much about it because if I do it gives spoilers and I don't do that as those of you who follow my blog know. If you want a book to sweep you away this is it! If you want action, it's here. If you want machismo it's here. This is a book you will finish in one sitting because it's that good. If you put it down it won't be for very long. I can't find anything bad about this book. Written by one of the few male romance writers, it delivers on all counts. This book has to be in your collection. BUY IT!

This is my first DNF book in a looooong time! But 25% in I simply couldn't do it anymore.

My biggest problem was the way it was written, nothing quite like anything I have read before. It wasn't written in first person or third person. It felt more like the author was 'telling' the story so the characters and setting felt very one dimensional, it is hard to explain.

That said they were a few speaking parts and thats when I discovered the MC had a scottish accent like nothing I've ever heard before either.

"Dinnae cry, baby! I'm haem safely, just as I pormised yer"
Let's not worry aboot her. I dinnae want tae spoil our night"

The positive it only cost 0.99c and I read 1/4 of the story.

I'm not really happy that I actually bought this book, though honestly, since it's by a self-published author, I'm not sure I could have borrowed it from the library.

I'm really not looking forward to writing this review, because I think that self-published authors are awesome and fearless and getting it done the best way that they can. 3 of my favorite authors are self-published and I love their work... and I was really looking forward to reading this book because of the reviews people have put out there about the book and the fact that it was one of my favorite book genres, smut. It was also the number one book listed on the recent Goodreads Listopia "Indie Authors Everybody Should Read." So I had high hopes.

Like several other reviewers, I am generally suspicious of male romance writers (I feel like they don't quite "get" female fantasies). I am also aware I make myself look hypocritical, since one of my favorite indie authors is male (who coincidentally writes awesome smut). It seems, at least in my case, that the male point-of-view didn't work for me this time. It was extremely obvious that this book was written by a man. The descriptions of the people, both men and women, were obviously written as seen through the eyes of a man. The response Katie writes to Scott's personal ad is obviously written by a man and not a woman. The sex scenes were very obviously written by a man (and I know how men write sex scenes; my husband is in the military and has written me many a letter detailing what he wants to do to me when he gets home). Honestly... I think I've grown up when it comes to the smut I enjoy, because this was way too Harlequin for me. I really did not think it was that hot. And I must be spoiled in real life because Scott did not last long in bed at all. I was far from being as impressed as Katie was.

I find foreign accents as attractive as the next American woman, but I found the written Scottish brogue really distracting. All I could hear in my head was Craig Ferguson when Scott was speaking. Not very sexy. I had to laugh out loud in real life when Britney was very obviously pursuing Scott and he was blissfully ignorant, because my husband is the exact same way (except when he realizes a girl is flirting with him, he becomes a total asshole). The "Sands of Betrayal" in the title is still confusing me, even after finishing the book. No one betrayed anyone. Yes, Britney relentlessly pursues Scott and tries to bed him, but she tries and can't and he won't, and she even puts on a nice facade and cooperates with Katie when things go awry. So the title makes no earthly sense at all. The jealousy Katie expresses is very "male" in it's presentation; it reads like how a guy wants think their significant other feels about other women. Me? I would have totally laughed if my husband told me this Britney person was trying to get him into bed. I would have called her myself and told her, "Good luck with that! Have fun. You'll probably die trying." That may just be my ego talking right there, though.

The biggest issue I had, however, was how the story was told. The author did a lot of "telling" and not much "showing." It was as if he had written his story directly from his own personal journal, with details that not many people care about (seriously, flight times do not matter in a romance novel). I didn't see the picture painted for me, it was told in excruciating painful minute details. And the frequent use of, "they both enjoyed," "they were both relieved," etc., etc., got old really fast.

It's very sweet that this is based on a real-life story (I'm guessing the author and his wife), and however much I really wanted to like this story and wanted it to turn me on... it just didn't do it for me. Obviously, I won't be continuing the series. Good luck to the author, because self-published authors are all sorts of awesome.

I was given this book by the author for a truthful review.

Ok so my friend and fellow blogger Diana was all insistent that I read this "Scott guy's book". I was like CALM DOWN SISTER and give me details. So she hooked me up with the author at the same time I found the blog hop and so here we are present day........

So I was very fascinated by a man who is taking some of his personal situations and putting pent to paper to tell about them. It definitely had to be therapeutic for him to write and release some of these feelings.

We meet Scott and learn about the trauma of his accident and divorce from his wife Claire. She is such a charmer to divorce a man who has a major injury. Anyway when then get to see Scott and Katie meet. Their relationship is exactly what the other needs. You can see immediately the connection they have mentally and physically *wink*. I will say that the intimate scenes are sensual and are written about truly LOVING the person they are with. Don't get me wrong, I love naughtiness but these were tender scenes.

Some of the choices Scott makes (like running off without discussing it with Katie) aren't what I would appreciate being the significant other of someone BUT when she finds out why he does it she is forgiving. I do feel that he did what he needed to do for his 'family". If he was given the choice again, I am sure he would do it again.

Long story short and so I don't spoil anything for you guys : Scott goes away and is protecting an American woman who is not in a safe area of the Middle East. Lets just say she doesn't respect the relationship Scott and Katie have and stops at nothing to try and seduce him. I loved that Scott is a true MAN and doesn't fall into this woman's vagina . He truly loves Katie and is keeping his eye on the prize.....a future together.

I really like this book. There is romance and action; passion and danger; and betrayal. If you like stories featuring rugged, military men I'm sure you enjoy Kilted Desire. The hero Scott Maclaren is a former military man in the British Army. He moves to Ohio to stay with family while recuperating from injuries sustained while on duty in the war zone. While there, Scott meets and falls in love with Katie, a single mother with two kids. In order to be able to marry and live the kind of life Katie wants, Scott goes to Bagdhad to work as a bodyguard. He is shocked when he finds out that his client is a sexy, red-haired woman. Britney decides she is going to seduce Scott because what Britney wants, Britney usually gets. Scott is not even aware of her plans as he is deeply in love with Katie and will stay true to the woman he loves.
There is a lot of action both in Iraq and in the bedroom. The scenes with Scott and Katie are hot, to say the least. And the action in Iraq is dangerous and scary to say the least. A.B.McKinley's writing makes you feel as if you are there with him and Britney as their car breaks down and they have to make their way back to the relative safety of their hotel. You can hear the glass crunch beneath their feet and share the fear as they make their way through the war torn street of Bagdhad.
I can not recommend Kilted Desire highly enough. There is enough romance to satisfy any romance reader and enough action in Bagdhad to satisfy anyone (male or female) who enjoys military action.

Where's there a will, there a way.....And it was proven by all three main characters of the story, each in its own way with their own agenda (cause as much as I've tried to ignore Britney, she is an integral part of the story). Yes, 5 stars for the reality of the story, for the clean lines and feelings, for the fact that the author showed Scott as a real person and not a superhero. I absolutely loved the intimate moments which can be cataloged as truly making love and not sex marathon, and that's complementing so well the story line and Scott's personality. I was enthralled, and couldn't help praying at some point when it became a little to painful..yup, that intense and captivating a story Kilted Desire is! I recommend it and is it in my re-read list and it goes in the favorites shelf.

I don't usually like stories with a lot of narration, but since it is Scott telling his own story, it makes a big difference. His storytelling clicks along, keeping you turning page after page. From his humility and loyalty to his sense of bravery and romanticism, Scott is a complete package, wrapped nicely in a kilt. This is a modern Scots warrior with old fashioned values: in short, Mr. Perfect. But he is real---he suffers heart ache, injuries, temptation, and betrayal along with rest of us mere mortals. A great start to a great series.

I had come across this on scribd, and thought the blurb sounded like something I’d be in to (deranged wannabe OW) but it was choppy, jumped around a lot, and I ended up skimming most of it. It ends in a bit of a cliffy, and I can’t see that it was ever published, so I wouldn’t recommend getting into it.

WOW!!!
In the past I have always stayed away from male authors with anything containing romance. But do you know what? This guy gets it - he really does! The emotion I felt was real. There were times when I couldn't read for the tears clouding my vision (frustrating but satisfying at the same time). Action, romance, frustration, sadness, it is all here and so very well delivered! Not one aspect is over or under done - the balance is perfect!
I am not going to retell the story here, other reviewers have done it and the synopsis tells you what you need to know. You are just going to have to get it yourself to find out the rest. But the one thing I might touch on is the fact that some of it is based on his real life experiences - I have huge respect for the men and women of the armed forces who face these situations everyday. Thank you to you all!
It is very well written - the spelling and grammar are perfect...and the body on the cover is his! (nudge, nudge, wink, wink)
Now I'm off to read the sequel.
Well done Sir! ;) Well done!

You go through so many different emotions on this journey, it bought a few tears to my eyes too!

The characters are very real, and even though Scott is an action man his soft and loveable and ooh so romantic! I haven't mentioned his Scottish accent, when Scott speaks it written as spoken and you hear a Scottish accent, sexy :)

You will really enjoy this book, action, scheming, and romance.

The writing is unique. The author is from Scotland and it's written in a Scottish brogue. It is unlike anything I've read before. You are with Scott in the middle of Baghdad, in a firefight. You are hiding in an alley facing down bad guys. This writer has it. He has lived it. You can feel what he feels and see what he sees. This book is for men as well as women. From being a bodyguard in Iraq to making love to his lady, this author has it.

This is the first book in the Kilted Desire Series and we follow Scott Maclaren on a 6 month security contract in Bagdad. I loved the combination of action, suspense, some humor and steamy scenes. I am afraid I found this book too choppy, and it lacked the depth that I look for in a book.

Interesting story, but again the delivery was a tad too dry.
Well, except for sex scenes. Mr. McKinley certainly scored there!!
