Zane Marshall, Enforcer for the Pacific Pack of purebred werewolves, has a job to do - figure out who or what is mutilating the young men of Plum Beach.

As an Author, I could be considered "genre-confused."

Are you already wondering what in the world is this lady talking about? ... genre-confused.

Let me explain!

I started my career writing Christian fiction, spiritual suspense and spiritual warfare stories. Good vs. Evil. Angels and Demons. I also am a contributor to a number of devotionals and anthologies by publishers like Zondervan and Regal.

However, I've always had a love for paranormal romance and gritty urban fantasy, prompting me to write my first paranormal romance/fantasy, I Kissed a Dog, Book One in the Werewolves of the West series. Published by Charles River Press/Cambridge Press, US.

I still love to inspire others as well, thus leading to my other new book, Soul Defenders: The Black Orchids, a completely rewritten version of my first book, Slaying the Shadows.

Are you with me? So ... considering the different audiences, what does my work have in common:

1. Heart stopping action.
2. Mystery and suspense.
3. Good vs. Evil
4. Love and blossoming romance in the midst of crisis situations.
5. Characters that are forced beyond their comfort zones and challenged to face their fears and overcome.
6. A major "Who dunnit factor."
7. Plenty of twists, turns, and subplots.

So, maybe I'm not really confusing after all, just diverse!

Please Note:

Both I Kissed a Dog and Soul Defenders will have a variety of e-versions coming soon. Currently, Soul Defenders is available on the Kindle Platform and in trade paperback. I Kissed a Dog is exclusively on Amazon (trade paperback) until its official release date of October 20, 2012. You can also pre-order at Barnes and Noble. I knew from page one I was going to like Chloe Carpenter. Funny, witty, and smart, she makes a great lead. After a life-threatening accident as a teenager leaves her with the strange ability to be able to communicate with animals, Chloe takes a job caring for animals at a wildlife park. Chloe is the type of girl who knows what she wants…at least she thinks she does. The day oh-so-sexy Zane shows up as the park's new vet, Chloe's world is turned upside down. With Zane's arrival strange things also begin to happen, and Chloe begins to question everything she's ever thought she knew.

The characters in this story were great. Besides Chloe, we have the sexy werewolf, Zane. Zane is your typical alpha male – always saving Chloe from disaster and causing her to blush just with a look. The chemistry between the two is hot, and their banter is a lot of fun. The book had me laughing the whole way through. As for the rest of the characters, there was a great mix of supernaturals, both good and bad. The good guys were great, and the bad guys were deliciously wicked.

Loved Zane! Chole, I had a hard time dealing with. To me she seemed somewhat bratty and annoyingly difficult. Although I couldn't blame her too much. A mate she didn't ask for, a smitten vampire, and an evil someone after her for her particular talents, would make any girl a bit bitchy. An interesting twist on the typical werewolf. Will keep you turning the pages to see what happens next!

Chloe Carpenter has a unique ability she can communicate with animals, not in words so much, but she can read the thoughts as a series of images. An ability that she doesn't really know the full extent off. Until one day she hears the thoughts of the very sexy, yet annoying (to her) newest co-worker. Dr. Zane Marshall is new to Plum City Wildlife Park who has his special ability, other then being the rescuer of Chloe, he is a werewolf. He's been sent there to check out the murders that have been taking place to young males between the ages 18 and 35. Thinking someone who he knows, but someone he doesn't want anything to do with, is the reason behind them all.

There is so much promise for this series, but I won't lie there were parts that irked me. A little slow starting but once you get into it, it is very gripping with a nice little twist and a 'Wow I never saw that coming!' moment.

The ending in particular is something that irked me, I'm not a fan of the whole cliffhanger thing, unless done well. This one made me think, 'Well this could have made a good start to book 2'

Will I read book two? Yes! I'm very much looking forward to seeing how this turn of events unfolds.

Chloe Carpenter knows she is unusual, her ability to communicate with animals is unique and rare making her a target for creatures that go bump in the night, although until an unfortunate incident she hadn't realized they existed. Meeting veterinarian Zane Marshall throws Chloe into an immediate tizzy, she can't deny the attraction but occasionally she reads his thoughts and this is new to her.

Zane has been sent to protect Chloe and she has a way of finding herself in trouble. Already committed to mate with another who he can't stand, he only has one way out finding his true mate..could it be Chloe?

There is a lot to this story, Chloe seems to have caught the interest of many a characters in this book and she blunders a lot trying to put it all together. Some of her efforts work out, while others not so much and could be the death of her. This is the first in the series, I had initially thought this would finish their story but it is a cliffhanger. Can't wait until the next one.

What can I say about this book?? hummmm- well, its a 3.5 potentially 4 star read for me..

Book Synopsis as stated by author, with a few tidbits in there from yours truly (in parentheses, of course!):

"Chloe Carpenter isn't like other women. She can communicate with animals. A gift she unwrapped following one of her frequent dances with death. In her otherwise wacky life, she's finally found a semblance of sanity working at the Plum Beach Wildlife Park, where her unique talents can make life or death differences for the animals in her care. That semblance is shattered when a new veterinarian roars into the park in his spiffed up sports car and sets his golden gaze on her. If she had her way, he'd roar right back out. Problem: He's her new coworker and he's saved her life twice - in the past twenty-four hours. Zane Marshall, Enforcer for the Pacific Pack of purebred werewolves (read: HOTTIE ALPHA!!!), has a job to do - figure out who or what is mutilating the young men of Plum Beach. With orders to find the woman who talks to animals, he accepts a position working alongside the fiery Chloe Carpenter, a female who ignites his interest far more than he ever expected. Remarkably, she's the one elusive female with potential to bring meaning and passion to his empty existence. Problem: She despises him (but thinks he OH SO YUMMY!!!). Together, they're forced to unravel a mystery of supernatural proportions, a murderous mystery with eternal implications for everyone. In the process, they discover opposites really do attract. Major Problem: Zane is pledged to another woman (Jazmine- who is a TOTAL BEEEOOOTTCHHH and crazed looney toon to boot), and she'll do anything to keep him from Chloe (understatement of the year).

Alrighty, sounds like a pretty good preview, no? This was an interesting read- lacking a little in the steam department, but that is personal preference- I can't help it if everyone in the world doesn't have a mind for smut when they are reading (or writing) :P Regardless, there are a few mildly titillating scenes with a wolf AND a few others with a scintilating master Vamp (well, not TOGETHER, at the same time... although........) ;) This is classified as a paranormal romance- but in all actuality, I would say it was heavy on the paranormal, light on the romance.

Author Carol Van Atta takes us into a world of Alpha and mutant wolves, melt-your-panties vamps, crazy bald fae dudes as well as a host of other Supernaturals- all wrapped up in a fun sized package. You get a little bit of everything- SO- tell us.. good?? Bad??

The Good...and the Bad.....

For the most part, characters were well developed and likeable...except for Chloe. (which kinda kills me, seeing as how she is our main character!) I just didn't LOVE her- I wanted Zane (hell, even Vampy Stalker Valamir) to grab her, kiss her senseless and tell her to shut the EFF up!!!) She's too hot/too cold too fast if that makes sense- the relationship goes from 0 to "I love you" in the course of a week- I guess I just wanted to see her emotions develop more gradually- or some big "aha!!!" to get her where she needs to be- that's part of the journey with characters you end up loving. She was whiny, stubborn as all get out and kind of an all around brat... and she faints. Repeatedly. I was rolling my peepers by about the third round of faint-fest 2012.

Zane- Hottie, rightful Alpha of his pack (although the author describes him as "empty"- I didn't really get that from him)- he seemed like a pretty stable guy, out doing his job... and just happens to get hot and heavy for a beauty who can read his wolfie lil thoughts.

REALLLLYYYYYY loved Valamir (Master Vamp after Chloe and her OH SO YUMMY blood)- The last few pages leave us in his thoughts, and all I can say is- HAWT!!! He's after some Chloe for his own- although he's been on Zane's side for her sake- he can no longer suppress his desires...Can't wait for book two for more of THIS guy!!! Woot! Kiss ME, ME, MEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!! **waving hands wildly**

Loved Alcuin- Also Vampire- BUT he is one of the good guys working with Zane and the rest of the wolfies... although he isn't a love interest (more like your gay best friend.... except not gay ... but still equally awesome :)- I would like to see more of him in the next book!!

Jazmine- totally crazy- great addition to the storyline- written well- rreeaalllyyy hated her- Thank you Carol for giving us a great adversary to loathe!!

So what's up with the star rating??

Well, I deducted a star for Chloe's character- I really wanted to love her- she has the potential to be an awesome heroine- and although I sense significant emotional development for her on the horizon in this series, it's just not there (for me at least) yet.

Really on the fence for the next potential .5 star deduction. It's the title. I cannot help picturing my Boston Terrier. It's just disturbing. I mean I get it. I Kissed a Dog play on words with wolf and all that- I REALLY do (please don't hate me here). But the title would prevent me from buying this book if I were to come across it in a book store- I dunno- replace Dog with Wolf?? The series that begins with this book Werewolves of the West=awesome, THAT is something I would pick up. I dunno- it's like this: Werewolves= supernatural hotness and strength.....Dogs=slobber and cleaning up barf off of my floor (NOT sexy by the way)- sorry, but I gotta say it!!! EEK!!!! (ducking to avoid thrown objects)

This was a fun read- excited to see what the next book She Kissed a Vampire is all about.... Ummmm... I will happily volunteer to help out Valamir in any way.. ahem.... yes. That is all. **fanning self**

Original Romancing the Dark Side Review:

Werewolves, vampires and villains...oh my! Love the fresh take the author brings to the werewolf myth...a definite must read for lovers of the furry and fanged!

When I first read the title of this book I thought it was going to be one of those humorous paranormal romance books, but to my surprise it was so much more! Chloe Carpenter has always been a bit accident prone and had her fair share of near death experiences, one in particular has left her with the ability to communicate with animals. Working at a wildlife park, she uses her unusual abilities to help and nurture the park's animals. When a new veterinarian joins the staff at the Plum Beach Wildlife Park, Chloe senses there's something different about the handsome Zane Marshall and vows to keep her distance, if he'd only stop saving her from eminent danger! Chloe soon discovers Zane's secret and is thrown into a supernatural world she never expected, working side by side with a sexy werewolf and trying to solve the mystery between the town's recent string of murders...all in a day's work, right?

I was quickly drawn to Chloe's character, I especially enjoyed her awesome ability to communicate with animals. Aside from her ability, Chloe is just an ordinary young woman living a normal life up until she meets Zane. I like that she's independent and isn't afraid to speak her mind, especially when it comes to the hero. She can be a bit stubborn and snarky but you'd probably react the same way if you realized werewolves and vampires were lurking in your town killing people!

I'll admit I'm not a huge fan of virgins in paranormal romance, but Chloe's way of thinking doesn't make that a big factor, although there were times where I wanted to slap her for teasing Zane with her hot and cold demeanor! The sexual tension between her and Zane is great and keeps you on edge. I love that she grows throughout the book and proves she's a smart and strong heroine. Any girl that's willing to battle werewolves to save her man is a winner in my book. Zane is an interesting and charming hero, it's hard for me to not love a sexy werewolf! There's a bit of mystery to him and I found myself wanting to know more about his character as the story progressed. He has a few alpha moments where his concern for Chloe turns him into a caveman, but she quickly puts a stop to that. The addition of a second love interest for Chloe comes in the form of vampire Valamir and was the icing of the cake for me! The man oozes sex appeal and danger and left me wanting...

I Kissed a Dog is a thrilling story with plenty of suspense and fresh world building. Hats off to Ms. Van Atta for creating a supernatural world where my two fave paranormals (werewolves and vampires) co-exist and are not the sworn enemies that we often see in this genre. And let's not forget the buffet of villains to choose from...just when you think you've figured things out there's a new twist that takes the story in another direction. With an array of supernatural alpha men, mutant werewolves, non-stop action and a spicy love-triangle, I Kissed a Dog is a captivating series debut.

This was an excellent start to a series and I was so happy to read this book!

Chloe isn't your average 24 year old. She's got some hidden talents that make life pretty interesting even before the Supernatural community starts to take notice of her. The last thing she needs is more trouble, or so she thinks! At the beginning of the book I had a little trouble connecting with Chloe. The writing was good, I just felt she was looking for any excuse to be mad at Zane. Her emotions were all over the place! Luckily as the book went on, and all the supernaturals came out to play I began to understand Chloe better and have more respect for her. Everyone around her has a secret, people are dying, there is a hot werewolf that would do anything to protect her, and one evil women that Zane has been pledged to since he was a child. It is enough to make anyone's head spin!

It was so easy to fall in love with Zane. So easy going while at the same time fiercely protective and loyal. Until he met Chloe he was beginning to feel trapped, but to him she is everything he was been waiting for. He is not immune to secret keeping in this book, but I honestly felt he had good reasons for the keeping the secrets he did. I felt so heartbroken for him when Chloe revealed her secrets. All this time she has pushed him away because of his lies while keeping huge ones of her own!

There is a lot of information to take in while reading! At times it was almost overwhelming trying to understand how all the other characters fit into the murders and betrayals. Who was a good guy and who was the bad guy? Until the end you really aren't sure, and even then I found myself wondering if I could still be wrong about some characters!

This book kept me on my toes and played with my emotions. I loved it! Some books are so predictable, but not this one. You never knew when you were going to get hit by a curve ball and I could not have even tried to predict half of the things that unfolded as the story progressed. I am so excited to see what Carol Van Atta does in the next book of the series! With everyone conspiring with their own hidden agendas, I'm worried about how my favorite characters will survive!

My Review of I Kissed a Dog

Wow, this book really got me hooked. The characters are likable, right away. Chloe , the heroine is awesome, and a different type of heroine we usually see. I liked her right away. She has this amazing unique gift that enables her to talk to animals, and understand their thoughts. Which is great, because the alpha male Zane, who is all that is hotness, is a werewolf, so they can do this mind-messaging as they like to call it. Its pretty cool.

This book was one of the most entertaining, thrilling and mysterious reads. We don’t only have werewolves, we have sexy vampires, fae, evil werewolves and the mutants as well. Chloe’s abilities find her right smack in the middle of a supernatural chaos taking place between a number of paranormal beings. Chloe has her hands pretty full between the sexy, rugged and very protective werewolf Zane, and the seductive and allusive vampire Valamir.

I really enjoyed this supernatural world the author created. It felt right, and I love that is all takes place so close to home for me. The wildlife safari she works at is on the Oregon coast, and I live in the mountains in Washington, and have been to many places up and down the coast. I found that to be fun for me, mentions of common places made it more real for me.

Here is a cute little part right after Zane and Chloe started their mind-messaging, once they knew what each other was.

“Your lady friend called. She happened to mention you were her husband-to-be. For us single girls, it’s a major disappointment.”
“Don’t include me in your disappointed group of single girls,” I quipped..
Zane shot me an “if looks could kill” look. Love you, too, Babe.
Eck! This mind-messaging was becoming as cumbersome as text-messaging. Why couldn’t we just talk like two normal adults? Because we’re not normal adults, I chided myself. One werewolf plus one animal-reading-freak equaled a major mismatch.

And here is another good example of some steaminess between Zane and Chloe.

“You never allowed me to answer your last question,” he whispered, his lips warm against my ear. “I don’t think you’re a whore, not even close. I find you beautiful, smart, sexy, and a little too headstrong, but that I can live with. And, yes, there are other supernatural beings.”
Shocked by his answer, I lifted my chin, meeting his gaze.
His eyes shimmered gold.
Figuring the color change had to do with amorous emotions I tried to pull away, afraid of succumbing to certain seduction. Intent on my surrender, his head dipped down and his lips crushed against mine, leaving me breathless as I melted against him, my tongue finding a perfect rhythm with his.
Forgetting we were in a public place, I ran my hands down his muscular arms, causing him to growl, a low feral vibration that sent shivers of pleasure everywhere at once. His skillful hands caressed my back, sliding lower.
“E-hem!” A phony throat-clearing cough interrupted his roaming hands.

Yeah, this book has its steamy, swoon worthy parts. I do not want to give too much away, but want to say, it’s a great thrill of a ride, amazing suspense and tension, On the edge of your seat for sure.
If you like the paranormal books like me, then grab this one, its amazing, and not like any others out there. It has its own unique great story.
5 big stars out of 5 for me, wish I could give it 10, but rating everyone does not go that high, lol
I was provided a copy of this book from the author for my honest review, for the book tour.

It's a good thing when a book surprises you, you tend to develop this much more mature love and understanding for the characters and plot. I personally have a tendency to become infatuated with books that completely dismisses your presumptions - well only if it has been executed correctly.

I Kissed a Dog starts off light and easy but fret not: if a thought provoking and fast pace plot is what you wish for then this novel will effortlessly bestow it upon you. The story stars Chloe Carpenter, a women working at a wildlife park with mad talents like telepathic communication with animals. One day a new veterinarian, Zane Marshall, storms into Chloe's life and sets off a chain of epic adventure and breath taking events. I Kissed a Dog is anything but a disappointment. It contains two sensual love interests, a possessive wannabe bride, an enthralling mystery, endorphin releasing action and in a nutshell: the power to dictate your body into non-stop hyperventilation.

Carol Van Atta made Chloe a very appeasing character to read about. Chloe, being the eyes that unveils the hidden supernatural world, has enough sarcasm to feed an elephant. People who enjoy a great sarcastic heroin will immediately fall in love with Chloe - i did!!! A little humour and sarcastic remark will never hurt and in this story, Chloe's humour creates a new dimension - an escape- from all the drama that is happening.
Sense of humour or not, Chloe isn't dependant of it to gain our emotional investment. Through mistakes and determination, we see a sort of personal development that slowly sprouts as more experience are being accumulated. Deep thought on how characters interact are being plotted intricately within the pacing of the story. This evokes my sentiments and i just can't help but to feel raw human emotions for Chloe and all other characters.

I only have one minuscule complaint. I felt as if the start was a bit difficult to comprehend. Wait, allow me to rephrase, I found the start awkward. It's only personal in which i wanted a more of a build up and BANG! Werewolves exists - know what i mean? Now looking back,I guess I would rather all the juicy bits at the end then a long start.

I Kissed a Dog is fast paced, action packed and exotic within its genre. Reading this book is pure nirvana: a paradise where anyone can escape to by simply allowing the story to proceed. Lavished with mind baffling twists, oozes with fiery hot scenes and is over populated with characters you can't help but fall for: this is a book you'd want for christmas.

Thank you Carol for giving me an ARC version. I've had a pleasant time reading it.

This one grew on me. Started as a three but the more I thought about it then it turned into a 4.

It has been awhile since I have read any paranormal books besides of course the BDB series so when given the opportunity I thought sure what the heck. This looked like it could be a good read.

I had no expectations of this book and I think sometimes that makes the journey so much better.

In this book there was a lot of information and I think it was well done with all the history and development into this world. At the same time there was a ton of quirkiness which made it uppity and light while in a darker unknown world. I think because there was so much information some of the parts of the story went to fast but in all I still fell into the story and was immersed into this world.

I liked the chemistry of Chloe and Zane. There was an instant pull between the two that was passionate yet comical at the same time.

In this new world that Chloe finds herself immersed into she starts to really gain friends and a new family which is all new for her because given her coma induced gift she has held people at arms length because no one truly understands her. They are drawn to her in the real world and supernatural world but she wasn't really comfortable in her own skin until she was awakened in this new world.

This book is left with a cliff hanger. :( but thank goodness the next book is supposed to be out soon enough so we can find out what happens with Chloe. I hope we also find out more about what happens with the true reason she has her gift and why now the gift is ten fold.

Ok. I must say that I love this book’s title. It is the most descriptive title imaginable. It is also straight, to the point, and very catching. I would have read this book just based on that. Of course, the book itself was awesome too.

This book is so easy to read. There is a natural flow to the writing. Nothing is forced or dumbed down. It flows naturally, the way that one would speak. It is also very detailed. Every little piece of information is there without every breaking the flow of the story. As a reader, you never have to stop and think about what’s going on. Van Atta works every little tidbit of back-story, description, and narrative into the storyline without stopping the action. I especially enjoyed the lesson on the history of paranormal species. Since it was one character giving it to another there was no dead point in the narrative.

The characters in this are brilliant. They were all unique and fit completely within the species that they were to portray. The main character referring to men as a different species cracked me up more than once. It was little descriptions like this fit throughout the novel that helped develop the characters and their personality more than any long description could have.

The groupings of characters in the various alliances was quite unique. Van Atta avoided the stereotype of grouping like species together. Alliances were based on the beliefs held by individual characters, and were also muddy at times. She also separated individuals into separate species when they are stereotypically grouped together into one species. New paranormal species were also presented in this novel to round out the characters. This was done brilliantly and in the same manner as the rest of Van Atta’s storytelling, little bits were provided here and there. The love triangle present in this novel also spans species. It adds a great deal of spice to the novel while also providing details as to the powers possessed by each individual.

As a whole, I thoroughly enjoyed this novel. I read it in one sitting, always wanting to know more. I cannot wait to get my hands on the sequel. If this novel is any indication, it will be absolutely brilliant.

I liked Chloe Carpenter but her on again/off again feelings for Zane (and others) was irritating. I thought she accepted the Vegas incident too readily and the next thing you know she's freaking out over something minor. She just seemed kinda mental at times. On the other hand, she's a "real" person who is clumsy as all get out and actually feints. She has hair issues, boyfriend issues and family issues just like a real person. However she does have one thing that normal people don't, she can talk to animals! Wouldn't it be great if you could talk to your pets? I'd love to know why my cats race from one room to another for no apparent reason.

I also liked Zane Marshall but that stunt he pulled in Vegas would have definitely turned me off if I'd been Chloe. Totally unacceptable behavior! But once I got over that incident I found that he was definitely one of the good guys and a good match for Chloe.

I can't decide which vampire I liked better Alcuin or Valamir. I got gay-friend vibes from Alcuin (though as far as I could tell he's not) which could make for some humorous situations. And Valamir is one sexy dude. I liked him a lot though I could do without that mind control crap. Choices, choices.

There are lots of sub-plots, lots going on and a ton of characters but all in all a well put together supernatural tale with vampires, werewolves, mutants, even creepy fae creatures and let's not forget the humans. It will be interesting to see where this series goes next so I will definitely be picking up I Kissed A Vampire.

I'd like to thank Carol Van Atta for the free copy of this book.

This book is about a woman, Chloe Carpenter, falling in love and coming to grips with the supernatural realities and conflicts that come with the new romance.

The characters are real to life, which is both a plus and a minus as sometimes they can get annoying and opinions on actions differ, but that is life after all.

There were a number of typos; however, I was reading an advanced copy. Therefore, these should be more or less ironed out by final printing.

The ending while entertaining, left the reader in cliffhanger status for the next book. While there is nothing wrong with that, and it would help tie up other loose ends from earlier in the book, it did feel a bit abrupt.

Overall, the writing produces evocative characters and vivid scenes. The reader is able to enter various situations as if tagging alongside Chloe. There is a definite want for a happy ending for the protagonists of this tale.

I was pleasantly surprised with Carol Van Atta’s twist on the genre; it is both refreshing and totally captivating. She has created a world with a whole passel of supernatural creatures from werewolves, vampires, to mutants and everything in between. The supporting cast in the book is very well fleshed out with distinctive personalities and relationships to Chloe. I Kissed a Dog more than met my expectations – I was very invested in the outcome of her story. Although this story had a very satisfying conclusion I hope we don't have to wait too long to revisit with the Pacific Pack again!

“I kissed a Dog by Carol Van Atta is an engaging, witty, Paranormal Romance with a hunky shape shifter hero, an alluring (but dangerous) vampire adversary, and a spunky heroine who keeps them both on their toes. Well written and fun to read, this exciting tale is full of adventure. If you like Terry Spear or Molly Harper, you will enjoy Carol Van Atta.”

I picked this title up for two reasons. The first was because the title alone intrigued me. I mean seriously, “I Kissed a Dog”…yeah, I just had to know why anyone would want to kiss a canine. I mean come on, us cats are much better kissers, believe me, and that’s not only because we don’t slobber all over you when we do kiss. We are much more refined and better mannered than any dog, any day. So I had to know what was up. And finding out that the main male character is a hot werewolf explained it all. Yes, I’d definitely kiss a werewolf. No way would this feline hesitate! The second reason for picking it up was because the story synopsis sounded fun, and promised to be something I would enjoy. And I did! =^.^=

Atta has created a wonderful range of characters that the reader will both love and hate respectively. Chloe is a sarcastic, yet klutzy woman who admittedly takes a bit of getting use to, but eventually wins you over as the book progresses. She has a feisty side to her that is a lot of fun, and I greatly enjoyed watching her verbally spar with Zane. Yes, there were times where I found her to be a bit too whiny, and her fainting moments got to be a bit tiresome, but for the most part, she strikes me as the type of character who has a great deal of potential to be the best out of everyone in the end. And seeing as this is the first book of a series, I see a lot of opportunities to grow and kick major butt for her in the future. Zane is just a total hottie! He really cares about Chloe, and I love that he wants to protect her, even if I sometimes found his way of doing so a bit domineering. The man is definitely Alpha, no questions there. And for the record, I’m not usually one for chauvinistic men, but Zane really isn’t as bad as some werewolf characters I’ve stumbled upon in other books. He really is the perfect counter-point for Chloe. Jazmine is the woman you just love to hate! Atta does a spectacular job portraying her as a serious b****. She’s so evil, I love it! Alcuin and Valamir are two characters I can’t wait to see more of. Alcuin is just plain fun and Valamir has sexy down to an art. I now have two new vampires added to my list of favorites after this book.

The mixture of supernatural lore throughout this book is amazing. I loved reading about the treaty between the pureblood werewolves and the Indian Tribes against the mutants, and even the mutants history was interesting. Add in the vampires, various paranormal hybrids, and more, we’re talking a serious paranormal smorgasbord here. I can’t wait to see what Atta has in store for everyone in the second book!

The only complaint that I have was while there was definitely chemistry between Chloe and Zane, nothing really happens between them until the end. There’s kissing, lots of verbal sparring, but over all I was I was genuinely frustrated by the lack of sex in the book. Yes, I’ve gotten use to paranormal romance novels having a number of spicy scenes throughout the pages, but this was practically non-existent. I’m not asking for serious ripping off of clothes every three chapters, but what’s wrong with a bit of love every once-in-a-while? And what made it even more frustrating, were the times when Chloe would mention her virginity and how she was waiting until marriage to finally be with a man. ~headdesk~ I don’t get it. I’m sorry, I just don’t.

That aside, this was a fun book. The story is fast paced, filled with action and suspense, and full of twists and turns that make for a great read. I’m very much looking forward to the next book in the series, She Kissed a Vampire, which will hopefully be released sometime next year! Yet another title which begs me to investigate it!

I Kissed A Dog is definitely a Paranormal Romance that tickled my fancy. Werewolves, vampires and whatever you can think of in between, I had a blast with this book. Quite the page-turner for this Urban Fantasy nut.

The characters in this book were so different and a lot of fun. No dull moments that is for sure. Our main character Chloe has a special ability. She can talk to animals through telepathy which is why she works at the zoo. But she can only do it with animals, so she finds it extra weird that she can hear the thoughts of the new hot vet that comes in to work with her. I really liked Chloe, but she could be a bit confrontational at times. Chloe snaps at Zane sometimes when he does something that seems a bit jerk-worthy. She was quite the feisty one, but it she wasn't annoying and that is what matters. Zane was delicious as hell. Book boyfriend worthy. I do like the mystery of why he was working at the zoo. There is a lot more that meets the eye.

I also enjoyed Zane's sexy friends as well especially the vampire Alcuin. He made me giddy. I loved the friendship they all have. Not like the usual vampire vs. werewolf Actually, it isn't the usual anything. Atta does a great job putting her own spin on vampire/werewolf mythology which I love. Another thing to love were the villains and Atta gave us plenty to choose from. You have Jazmine, who from the first sentence you can tell would be the mega-b****. And boy, that is not even the half of it. Zane was promised to her as a mate and with Chloe in town, that messes up whatever plans she has up her sleeves. Zane doesn't trust her because she craves power and Zane can give that too her. Not to mention, he feels she may be behind the murders that have been going around town. But he has no proof.

The story is action packed and very thrilling. There seems to always be a bump in the road and the further you go, that bump gets bigger. I love the supernatural mystery Atta gives us. You think you have things figured out, but there is much more to it than you think. That is especially true given the ending of the book. It is not over, boy it is not over. What a rush.

This is a wonderful read. The story was suspenseful and full of mystery. I couldn't put this down. Although the only complaint I do have is the cover. It is a beautiful cover, but Chloe should be darker. Her and the wolf actually. I am just saying. Nonetheless, this was a page-turner. I am uber-excited for book 2. I Kissed A Dog has definitely left an impression and I have every intention on getting book 2 the moment it comes out. One of my favorite reads of 2012!

Chloe Carpenter has had an unique ability since an accident left her in a coma for six months. She can communicate with animals which makes her job at Plum Beach Wildlife Park ideal. She love interacting with the animals on a daily basis. When Luke, the Director of Plum Beach Wildlife Park and secret crush, tells Chloe that he hired Dr. Zane Marshall as Park's vet. Chloe is stunned by this news. She thought that she'd help Luke pick out the new vet for the Park. Dr. Zane Marshall is a dangerously sexy man with a few hidden talents and secrets that intrigue Chloe and the rest of the female staff at the Park. Zane knows about Chloe's unique talent and his hoping that she will show him how is works. Zane is a member of the Pacific Pack and Beta wolf to Logan Sanders. Someone is killing young men between the ages of 18 to 30 in brutal fashion leaving the police baffled. A woman with red hair has been seen in the company of these men but no clue as to who she is yet. Jazmine is suppose to become Zane's mate at the next full moon unless he can find his true and chosen mate. Upon meeting Jazmine, Chloe doesn't like her at all and the feeling is mutual and thensome. Alcuin, a vampire, helps Zane and company teleport to a special meeting with the Elders. Another vampire named Valamir wants Chloe to be his mate inspite of her loving Zane. Valamir tempts Chloe in ways that make her feel that she has to lie to Zane about what is going on. Zane and Chloe suddenly get married as a means of protection for Chloe but upsets a few people namely Luke and her parents. Zane wants Chloe to be his true mate by accepting his mating mark. Who is killing young men in Plum Beach? What is Jazmine really after? Who is the red haired woman? Will Chloe be tempted by Valamir? Will Chloe admit her true feelings about Zane? Will Chloe accept Zane's mating mark? Your answers await you in I Kissed a Dog.

I love the uniqueness of the werewolf lore presented in this book! I've read alot of shifter and supernatural books. Yet this unique twist get it an advantage over other paranormal books out there. Chloe feels like a freak sometimes for her ability yet she's truly a special person gifted with an unique talent. She's developed this talent to help the animals in her charge which is a truly admirable goal. I love that Zane wants to know Chloe for Chloe even with her talent! Zane shows Chloe that she's special and unique woman. Zane can be bossy and demanding yet it marks him as the Alpha he will become and already is. Alcuin and Valamir are both good and bad in different ways. Alcuin wants to help others with little to no gain from it. Valamir, on the other hand, wants to possess Chloe because she intrigues him. He resorts to trickery and mind games to get what he wants. I will definitely be continuing with this series.

Ok, it has to be said, i think i loved this book from the start! Books that start great normally end up being great, and this was. I totally enjoyed it!

Chloe is our female for the books journey. She has a special "gift" (or pain in the ass- depending what day it is!). She works at the local wildlife farm, where she uses her gift - she can talk to animals. Yup, you read right - she can talk telepathically to them, which is a great asset for the job - she can ask why they're agitated, what the pains are, what they can see.
Which when a series of murders at Plum Beach start to occur and the animals get spooked.

Chloe are suddenly given a partner to work with at the zoo, which she REALLY doesn't want. Dr Zane Marshal is one hunk of a fella, and she is instantly attracted to him, but refuses to give in to it. Suddenly she hears a thought - a thought about her - an looks to Zane who frowns....and suddenly she can feel barriers slamming down.

She eventually accepts Zane but when out for a drink one night, she can sense 4 animals/creatures outside the bar. Zane tells her to stay in the bar an he goes out......but Chloe doesn't stay in the bar, and comes out to see 5 wolfmen fighting viciously. Puzzled, she stares...the one left looks are her...and runs.

Oh my the floodgates open as she discovers Zane is a werewolf....actually taking it quite well, she asks about other bump in the nights to be told they're real....

The murders need to be solved, and Zane and Chloe both believe the woman pledged to marry Zane when they were pups is involved with them.....
Zane taking advantage of Chloe's inebriated state marries her in Vegas in a shotgun wedding, claiming he took her virginity and Chloe is horrified. Zane has had a mark appear that only shows when their true mate is met. It appeared with Chloe, and Zane needed to make her his to protect her. An ancient Vampire has his eyes and teeth already on her. Jazmine too is eager for Chloe's blood.
Chloe however is mortified that she lost her virginity on her WEDDING night, she refuses to speak to Zane.....

Oh, so many things happen that make this book just a brilliant read.... i fear if i carry on with each individual event ill be writing an essay...

Needless to say, i LOVED this book, i loved the way it was written, i loved the characters and looking forward to the rest of the series....totally recommended if you're a big fan of paranormal romance/mystery!

Read on behalf of bewitching tours in return for an honest review

I kissed a girl and I liked it... ok so I keep singing this song because of the title, but let me just say that this story is nothing like that! I've found another werewolf book to drool over!! I had seen this title a few times and had put it on my TBR want list, so when the tour came up I had to jump on it! It's a very unique tale because there really is so many cool parts going on! You like paranormal romance, it's there,
You like mystery, it's there, you like action, it's there, you like a little fantasy, there's some seriously cool creatures coming into play! And the turn about of "bitten" versus "pure blood" werewolves is just fascinating.

ok, I'm gunna get a little nuts with Chloe. I do like her, but I keep thinking if she was my friend I'd have slapped her several times. First, I like her for her fan-flipping-tastic sarcasm! She has had some of the best lines ever!! I like her because she is trying to be brave and not always be the victim. I understand growing up with a "gift" makes life hard. But dude, when the bad guys come knocking and someone tells you to stay hidden in the closet, STAY HIDDEN IN THE CLOSET!! And seriously, her impatience has almost gotten her killed like 5 times. And the almost love triangle... But anywho, other than maybe just being slightly bad decision making, Chloe is definitely a very fun character and I thoroughly enjoyed her!

Zane is down right HAWT!! Hell, so are all the werewolves :) even the vampers are gorgeous, but short of Alciun, these vampers just creep me out and make me want to carry stakes made out of my trees twigs! I will say two things about Zane, even if he has good intentions, trying to protect the girl while lying to her is BAD DOG!! He took multiple tries to learn this lesson! And secondly, I'm Cajun so if be EVER want to come cook for me, I'll return the favor, and some! :)

I am Completely mesmerized by all the twists and turns! I was glued to each page trying to figure out who was on who's side and where the bad guys would pop out from and if Zane and Chloe would ever finally get an uninterrupted moment!! :) I loved this story and I absolutely cannot wait for much much more!! I definitely plan on reading more of this series! I will say, 5 WOLFY GORGEOUS HEARTSTOPPING PAWS from me! :) Now pretty please gimme some mo'!!

Original review posted on my blog Urban Fantasy Review

I received a copy of I Kissed a Dog from the author in exchange for a fair and honest review, so here goes. Chloe Carpenter nearly died as a teenager and as a result she was gifted with the ability to communicate with animals and as she finds out weres as well. Chloe has taken a job in a wildlife park and it is there she meets Zane a purebred werewolf. Zane saves her life more than once and an attraction builds between them and Chloe is introduced to his dangerous world and the other supernatural characters in it. Meanwhile in the small community of Plum Beach single men are being killed and mutilated, Chloe and Zane set out to find the murderers.

Ok there were parts of this book I absolutely loved and others well...not so much. There are two things I loathe in PNR the first is a whiny heroine and the second is a virgin, aaaaaaand Chloe was both. For most of the book she was right up there with Bella Swann and Anastasia Steele in the heroines too stupid to live category. Chloe was like a whiny teenager with perpetual PMS and if I was a guy she would be way too much work. The virgin thing...really?!! Zane, for the most part I liked except for his constant sucking up to Chloe and the chemistry between them was mostly meh. The supporting cast, now they were interesting, the two M's were funny and Jazmine was a wicked bad guy...er gal. The vamps now that was some YUM, I would love to see where this is going with Valamir he was hot *fans self*.

The world building was fantastic and I loved all the different species of supernaturals contained in the book. The story was fast paced and kept me flipping the pages to see what was coming next. I liked the story enough to get past the fact that throughout most of the book I wanted to slap the main character upside the head. The whole talking to animals thing was really original and in the PNR genre it is really hard to find original. The ending worked well as a setup for the next book in the series, which I will definitely check out.

I had a review all written, but as I was rereading it, I kept changing things and I finally just threw it out and started over. It was too serious for such an exciting and fun story.

Chloe’s near death and seven month coma have left her with the ability to hear and see animals thoughts. She uses this to her advantage working at the Plum Beach Wildlife Park and her ability is often sought.

A new veterinarian, Zane, comes along and her vows of celibacy are in danger. This aplha male calls out to her inner self, jumbling her thoughts and weakening her resolve. She’s angered, afraid, and electrified by him all at the same time, which leads to some fun sparks between these two.

There’s a serious part. Young men are being murdered. First, there’s two. Then a third. And a fourth, and the last two Chloe knew.

There’s a dark side. Who’s killing these young men? The vamps, fae, or evil werewolves? All seem to have their own agendas and all are suspect.

Then there’s the fun, exciting part. The romantic sparks between Chloe and Zane. Chloe’s ability to read minds was limited to just animals. As she honed her skills, she wondered if she’d eventually be able to do the same with humans. She found she could capture Zane’s thoughts, with good reason, and cheated to use this to her advantage. The dialogue between these two kept me smiling as they sparred and came together. They go together like butter and popcorn. Not complete without the other.

And we can’t forget the villains. There’s a mysterious figure that attacks a zebra, sucking it’s blood. Hmm.. And the mutants, werewolves that are turned not born one. I wouldn’t recommend trying to pet one. And then there’s Jazmine. Cold as ice and sharpening her claws. She’s not liking Chloe and Zane’s budding romance at all. He’s supposed to be her mate.

I enjoy a good mystery and romance. Add in the supernatural elements and I’m wanting to cheat, skip ahead to see if what I wanted to happen did and who the killer was. But I didn’t. And the wait was worth it.

I was provided a copy of this book for my honest and unbiased review.

I love a supernatural world where the writer takes you for such an insane ride, you lose sight of your own reality. Carol Van Atta’s book, I Kissed a Dog -Werewolves of the West, was one of those books. And what a ride.

The story starts out with meeting Chloe, our star and the background and explanation of her "gift". She is basically a Dr.Doolittle, she can communicate with the animals. Very cool gift I must say. Chloe goes about her day to day working at the local wildlife preserve. Content and accepting of her gift. She is a basic everyday kind of girl.

Enter Dr. Zane Marshall, the new vet and all hot, all alpha male. Chloe is immediately drawn to him, something that takes her by surprise. She is not that kind of girl to fall like that, doesn't even date. But that changes very fast when Zane sets eyes on her. OH! And he's a werewolf :) A very sexy werewolf. His attraction to Chloe is immediate as well.

The story had so many twists and turns. A serial killer on the loose, a nutty FBI agent that puts everyone on edge, a somewhat jilted love interest, a crazed stalker possible mate of Zane, an ancient vampire with the hots for Chloe, a shotgun wedding, werewolves, vampires, mutants, ugly hooded bald men and whatever you can think of in between.

I don't want to give to much away, there is just to much going on, you have to read it to believe it. This is a story line like no other that keeps you turning page after page after page.

The author's characterizations were spot on and readily clarified. The twisting story line was clean and very easily understood. Loved the prose. This was a fantastic paranormal story that just kept on giving.

I can not wait for book 2 to see what happens to the main group of characters, especially Vladimir, the ancient vamp with the hots for Chloe, you will totally love him as a secondary character.

Kudos to Carol Van Atta for giving me a world that I was completely engaged and lost in.

I was lucky enough to win this book through Goodreads First Reads contest.

Carol Van Atta puts a whole new twist on werewolves, that no author to my knowledge has done before.

After an accident that nearly claimed Chloe Carpenters life, she is left with a sixth sense: animal mind reading. She works at a little zoo, where she helps the veterinarians and zookeepers find out what is wrong with the animals, by seeing into their minds and finding the problem. In comes Zane Marshal, new in town, and drop dead gorgeous. Chloe can't stand Zane at first sight. He seems full of himself, and can't stand how all the other women are drooling over his good looks. How is she supposed to work with this new veternarian if she can't stand being in the same room as him? Not only that, but there has been a series of deaths in their small town, and she is weary to trust this man.

Suddenly Chloe finds that she can read Zane's mind. Strange. She's never been able to read humans minds before, only animals. As Chloe and Zane become closer, as their jobs depend on it, Chloe is thrown into a supernatural world she didn't know existed and finds her very life at great risk.

Though there was a bit of a wobbly start to I Kissed a Dog by Carol Van Atta, I thoroughly enjoyed the story, the world building, and the idea.

At the start of the book, there were far too many parallels to the Twilight books, including some paragraphs that could have come directly out of the saga itself. However, about a quarter of the way through, the story definitely picked up speed and took on a shape all its own. By the half way point I had a hard time putting the book down, and flew through the last 200 pages with ease.

I'm dying to read the next book in the series "She Kissed a Vampire"; after that cliff hanger at the end of "I Kissed a Dog" who wouldn't?

I was initially drawn to this book for it's catchy title. I am so glad I got my hands on this little beauty. I was completely mesmerized with the story and a certain sexy alpha male. Carol Van Atta has a major hit on her hands with I Kissed A Dog!

Chloe Carpenter is not your average woman. She has the ability to communicate with animals. I love this about her. She uses her skills to help injured or traumatized animals at the Plum Beach Wildlife Park. Chloe is funny and a bit sarcastic, which I find to be great qualities in a leading lady. She also makes me laugh at her lack of gracefulness at the most inopportune times, sometimes leading to life threatening situations. Thank goodness for her gorgeous savior Zane.

Zane Marshall is the new veterinarian at the wildlife park. He's sexy, confident and completely gets under Chloe's skin. He is also a werewolf that is working undercover to find out who is murdering young men in the area. I instantly swooned over Zane. He is purely masculine with a sensual animal magnitism that drives me wild. I couldn't get enough of him!

"Why did Zane have to be drop dead gorgeous wearing Levis that hugged his muscular legs? I'm a leg girl. Powerul legs and a tight bum were a major turn on. His presence gave me heartburn. It looked like I'd have to invest in some strong antacids." This quote says it all.

I am completely captivated by the story of Chloe and Zane. In this book I get bits of all my favorite supernatural creatures. Werewolves, Vampires, Mutants and hints at more possibilities in the series. I have to warn you, once you start reading you won't want to put it down. I felt like screaming because I didn't want the book to end. I need more!! I can't wait for book 2. I Kissed A Dog is a book I highly recommend.

On Chloe Carpenter’s fifteenth Birthday, she was attached by a dog and knocked into a pool, nearly drowning her. The ordeal left her comatose for seven months. Upon her unexpected recovery, she gained an ability to communicate with animals and a fear of dogs.

As an adult, she utilizes her gift by working at Plum Beach Wildlife Park. It is there she meets the new veterinarian, Zane Marshall. Oddly, she can hear his thoughts, and she soon discovers that he is not human. To top things off, there is a serial killer on the loose and Chloe is enlisted to help in the investigation.

I really enjoyed I Kissed a Dog. The story was original and fast moving. I enjoyed the plot; it was mysterious with lots of twists. Carol Van Atta did a good job with keeping you guessing the individual’s allegiances.

The characters were numerous and differentiated. I like Chloe’s talent for being able to talk to animals. If I could pick a super power that would be it.

I really like Zane Marshall. I enjoyed Chloe and Zane’s love/hate relationship. Without giving specifics to avoid a spoiler, but you might want to skip the rest of this paragraph if you haven’t read the book: I was disappointed by Zane’s action in Las Vegas. What he did troubled me. Chloe had every reason to be upset with him. I was happy when he was redeemed later in the novel. Not that Chloe’s actions were any better, but I honestly believe she was enthralled by the vampire and had no choice in the matter.

I Kissed a Dog ends in a cliff hanger that will leave you on the edge on your seat. It definitely left made me wanting to read the sequel, I Kissed a Vampire, to see what happens next.

Due to an accident Chloe Carpenter has developed the power to communicate with animals, which comes in very handy in her job at the Plum Beach Wildlife Park. She’s a bit put out when Dr. Zane Marshall arrives at the park to take over vet duties. She’s attracted to him but wary, especially when suddenly, she can hear his thoughts. Prior to this she’s only been able to hear the thoughts of animals. Shortly after meeting Zane, Chloe tries to help the local police catch a murderer by talking to the murder victim’s pets. Soon Chloe is catapulted into the werewolf world and their politics plus a murder investigation.

I found Chloe a frustrating character. She is sometimes juvenile and immature in her behavior while at other times she’s upbeat and normal. Zane, on the other hand, is an interesting character, powerful and charismatic, and I wanted to learn more. There were times when I wondered why Zane bothered with Chloe’s hot and cold behavior.

The cast of secondary characters were great, setting up possible spinoff stories and adding to the story. I particularly liked the vampires. Vampire Valamir’s presence made a love triangle, but this aspect almost seemed like an afterthought and not fully utilized.

The thing I liked most about this book was that it was different from what I’ve read to date. Ms. Van Atta has taken an original idea and given it her own paranormal slant. I enjoyed the plot and watching it all come together.

I received this book from the author in exchange for an honest review.

I loved this book, I loved Chloe and her thoughts, "I'm a leg girl. Powerful legs and a tight bum were a major turn on. His presence gave me heartburn. It looked like I'd have to invest in some strong antacids." I also loved Zane, I don't know how to put into words what he is and how much I loved him;
"How's it going? Enjoying your tour?"
"Very much so." His eyes traveled down my frame lingering on my breasts then legs.
I also love how at times he was more animal then human, "Zane grabbed his knife and fork and sliced into a steak big enough to feed four. He tore off a huge chunk of bloody beef and swallowed it whole. I struggle not to gag. Sure, I liked red meat, but not when it was still mooing." Zane is sometimes not one for words so luckily Chloe and Zane can communicate through their minds, "Rather than bother with words, he growled. His mental message almost changed my mind. "You're all the fun I need Chloe. When will you figure it out? I. Want. You." Then there were times Zane NEEDED to say things out loud to make Chloe understands the message, "You are mine, Chloe. I am The Alpha and you are my marked mate. You chose me and will learn to abide by my decisions. I am fair and just, and have since the moment I met you thought of your best interests." Can't wait for book two!!

For me, I Kissed a Dog is one of the most thrilling, entertaining, and mysterious reads of 2012! From beginning to end, I couldn't get enough of this story.

Atta takes us into the life of Chloe Carpenter-a beautiful, smart woman that is talented in more ways than one. And although a bit stubborn and strong willed, underneath the outgoing, witty exterior, she is real, shares the same fears as any regular person, and struggles with figuring out who she is and what she wants.

Chloe's abilities land her smack dab in the middle of supernatural chaos taking place between a number of paranormal beings. Between the sexy, rugged, protective werewolf Zane, and the seductive, allusive vampire Valamir, Chloe has her hands more than full. But her man worries are only the beginning of her problems as she finds herself entangled in more than she bargained for when a mystery begins to unfold.

A plot thick with many layers, a ton of enticing characters that you can't help but love, and alpha males galore(literally and figuratively), I Kissed a Dog is a novel you should put on your must read list!

5 stars! And that's only because the scale doesn't go any farther on goodreads! I couldn't put it down!

I Kissed a Dog is a fantastic new book in what is sure to be a great new series. The Paranormal Romance genre is currently inundated with books about supernatural creatures. It is hard to find one that stands out among the many. I Kissed a Dog pulls away from the pack and makes a name for itself. Carol Van Atta does a great job with her design of a supernatural world within the human world. Chloe who is psychic with animals stumbles upon werewolves when she begins to notice she can read the minds of only some people. Ever since her accident animals thoughts have come to her but no matter what she tried people were elusive until now. Zane Marshall is the new hunky veterinarian who was hired to work with Chloe. The instant attraction between the two is explosive. They are faced with a serial killer, vampires and unknown cloaked figures. Between trying to solve all these mysteries and fight their strong bond this pair is a powerhouse. Overall, this is a wonderful beginning to a series I can’t wait to continue reading. If you enjoy a good paranormal romance you will want to pick this up at once.
