Frans Verhagen ziet het altijd net weer anders. Dat levert bij sommige presidenten een verrassend perspectief en eigenlijk nergens het bekende verhaal. Een mooi naslagwerkje over al die mannen die soms aan hun ambitie ten ondergingen, soms faalden omdat ze incapabel waren en soms, heel soms, glorieerden...

Ik las een oude versie uit 2000. Bill Clinton is de laatste president.

This book was published in the Netherlands due to the looming elections in 2012 and was meant to give some insight in the presidential race throughout the American history and the role played by all presidents. Their influence and their failings. It is not written from a democratic/republican/ liberal viewpoint it just reflects the points of view as seen through the eyes of historians. (at the end of the book there is an extensive list on books about all the specific presidents and the big points in their respective reigns.

It is most interesting due to the fact that I always thought that the current Presidential races are kind of scared by its crude mudslinging. But as the book shows the presidential race was most of the time not the cleanest of affairs as the differences between parties was always very strong.

Anyhow it was the writers intention to tickle the tastebuds of his readers so that they might perhaps continue to read more on the subjects of the various presidents or US history. As such it is a very accomplished book, and enjoyable. It is source of facts that can be looked up by anyone interested in history.

Verhagen legt op een heldere manier uit wat het presidentschap in houdt en hoe de verschillende presidenten dit hebben ingevuld.

Een goede opstap/introductie voor wie meer over de Amerikaanse geschiedenis wil weten. Komt met een uitstekende lijst met aanbevolen literatuur.

Loopt tot 2012, voordat Obama herkozen werd.
