In this volume, Baki trains on the top of a mountain and eats loads of food to gain weight. After completing his training and bulking up immensely Baki goes out into the woods to fight the Monkey King, a large sasquatch-like beast that's said to be nearly undefeatable to humans. Baki fights the great beast and defeats it, then returns to society with his newfound strength.

Baki sees a fight on TV with Yuri in it (the boxer he lost to in Volume 10) and decides he can beat him now after his recent training. He's now set to fight Yuri again next, but will Baki's training prove to be enough to overcome Yuri's impeccable boxing talent?

“Do you think it’s possible for me to live a quiet life where I don’t have to harm things to become stronger?”

Tears sting my eyes as I write it. Baki never wanted any of this shit. He’s just a boy 

Baki powers up a lot and starts to mature as a fighter both physically and mentally. We get some epic man vs. wild fight scene in this one. Also the connection he makes, the relation of respect that he builds up with the monster ape is truly magnificent. Then after his return, its a showdown to decide his next opponent. Who will face Baki is decided in the last chapter of the volume. It will be interesting to watch if Baki can take down the strongest Yakuza leader by himself.

Awesome and gory.

We get to see how Baki really grew stronger and prevailed against his monstrous oponent by using not just his new found strenght but also his tenacity and fighting strategy. Truly amazing work here.

After all of this we get a bit of Baki getting back to school and, well he really stands out like a sore thumb.

Then another bait and switch. We're presented with a powerful rival, who actually beat Baki before, and is quickly eliminated by a third party that wants to fight Baki instead. To Itagaki's credit, at least this character was introduced before.

Baki vs the Yasha Ape is fantastic but I am a lot less interesting in Yuri’s story of becoming the Heavyweight champion
