If you have read "make it stick" don't go for this one, it is like paraphrasing some key ideas of that book. Problem-solving before being instructed, interlinking and using visualization, they were all covered in best ways in "make it stick", yet Young's idea on visceralization was more novel! However, before reading his book I didn't distinguish between "visualize" and "visceralize" and I would rather utilize the verb "picture" as what he defines "visualize". Anyhow, I didn't enjoy and learn as I was anticipating.

https://www.facebook.com/STJEGYPT/pho...

learn how to learn

Brief with some simple methods. For some it would be obvious but for me it was helpful. I can't wait to try these methods and see how it goes. It says in the book that the change won't be big instantly. It will take time with practice and making it as a habit. I am looking forward to seeing a change.
P.S: It's better to write down notes while reading so that you can remember it all.

Small, useful, and refreshing

Holistic learning is a way to study building constructs inside your brain, instead of building boxes as if you're using rote memorization (we use it alot by the way)

Comparing the two ways of learning, showing the benefits, is what the book is all about.

As easy as it looks as hard as it gets to build a construct,

Once you learn how to build and practice this whole thing.. It becomes effortless unconscious way.

3.5/5 - Fulfills its purpose. You can get it here.

I've been hearing about this form of learning for a while now -namely, a friend introduced it to me, since I had no idea this was a thing even- and I've grown more and more curious about it. It's relatable, especially the introduction, that I misjudged at first.

The ideas are interesting -I noted down some of them for future reference- and it shows the author has given this topic more than just a few thoughts, considering there's no rule of thumb. Also, I'm all in for this "making learning accessible for everyone" statement that I wasn't expecting.

Young offers a very short and pragmatic read in his eBook Holistic Learning: How to Study Better, Understand More and Actually 'Get' What You Want to Learn. The main premise of the book presented by the author emphasizes the effectiveness of iteratively assembling and organizing our experiences, ideas and knowledge into a Construct. In the context of Holistic Learning, a Construct is a collection of ideas that are linked or spun into a web of relationships, and allows us to relate subjects and concepts. Young is quick to point out that how we find and establish those links between different ideas when creating a mental Construct as part of the learning process will vary greatly from one individual to another. Through building and refining a Construct, we can come to understanding new concepts, materials and ideas on a deeper level that is quicker, more efficient and naturally easier to refine, update and maintain.

Readers may find that many of the approaches to how we organize and view what we learn as presented is natural and intuitive, but the true value Young brings to Holistic Learning is the clarity and accessibility in describing what can easily become a confusing and convoluted set of abstract ideas on thinking and learning in a deliberate and active manner. Practice and evaluation of the Holistic Learning approach presented in this book over time will determine if it has helped me learn, retain and apply new concepts more easily and effectively, but upon finishing this read, I can state that the thinking and processing of what Young has presented has sent me off on the path to a good start.

In closing, Young writes that this book doesn't have legs, and that he "wrote this book with the hopes that it could help students, professionals, educators or anyone that wants to improve the way they learn. If [we] got some value from the ideas in this book [he] encourages [us] to share it with whoever [we] can", either as an E-mail attachment E-mailing or sharing a link to the original file. With this in mind, I would like to recommend this book by sharing a link to it as requested by the author on his web site:

I learn best when I'm taking notes of every single detail I hear. However this type of learning does not mean to be like that. Holistic learning is connecting what you've learned like building a web inside your head to another lesson or idea that you had known a long ago. It's a fun way of learning and remembering things. It takes practice to master Holistic Learning and I hope I can do it, too.

This system assumes that you have previous knowledge in other things in order to build "models" and "constructs".. The instructions are too general / vague. Unless if the author is expecting the reader to create models and stuff to understand his ideas..

I have been applying most of this by nature, and It works perfectly good. Yet, as sadly I am applying this already by nature, I didn't get new ideas from the book. It is clear and simplified. It is more into a handout than a book.

I feel that it won't help people who don't think like this by nature. As a book, it would have had a stronger effect if it talks in depth more. Another thing, It talked about learning in context of studying for exams most, and as graduate by interest was wide bigger.

Anyways, as by practice I believe in this way of Learning. I can't give a bad rate and I love Scott trial to share everything he knows! :) Thanks Scott.

A very short and direct book, I like it, it provides a new steps on how to link things, ideas and knowledge together in a kind of web relationship inside our heads to get more and more understanding of new concepts and ideas. it comes up with a new Holistic Learning approaches that I think they would be very helpful.
Thank you Young for sharing this :)

This short ebook was interesting to me because I am fascinated with learning styles and how the brain works. I think I've always been a naturally holistic learner. There were not many practical "how tos" in here however so it was mostly just an overview of the concept.
