The first story was frustrating! It ended suddenly without things being resolved. The three other stories flowed and issues resolved before the happy-ever-after.

Calico Brides by Darlene Franklin.

This Romancing America book contains four stories in one. We meet the Calico sewing circle, women that take on projects from the Lord to work as missions in the community around them. It doesn't hurt that along the way with them working for the Lord, he blesses them with a love of their life.

These reads are short and sweet. They could be stand alone books, but best kept together.

Book 1 - A Birthday Wish
Gladys feels led to help Mr. Keller. He hardly leaves his house since his wife died and no one seems to visit or take care of the older man. To hear tale of it though, he has enough money to see to his needs, but he has become grouchy over time. Her first venture toward helping him is to decorate his house with baskets of greenery. So much for stealth, all her hammering and banging brings out the inhabitants. This includes a young gentleman and the older, Mr. Keller. The young gentlemen is Haydn, who has come to visit his grandfather. Over time, and an illness that could have easily taken his life, Mr. Keller with the help of Gladys and Hayden, comes out of the grouchy cocoon that he has formed.

Book 2 - Miss Bliss and the Bear
Annie's brother is a soldier and talks about missing the comforts of home. This gives Annie the idea to knit mittens, scarfs and socks for all the soldiers at the nearby fort. The Fort Chaplain, Jeremiah, has become known as the bear. He seems to have issues with women, book doesn't go into a lot of detail. We do know that he doesn't seem to want Annie or the other ladies coming to the fort. He finds that in order to help Annie with her project, he has to go to her house to discuss the specifics and pick up the items.

Book 3 - Buttons for Birdie (Has to be my favorite of them all)
Birdie Landry was a saloon girl. She made the right decision in life and is now a Christian and trying to become more independent. Her life has been hard. Even though she is a new creature in Christ, others still see her for who she was, but she is determined to overcome it all with the Lord's help. She makes her living now from sewing and from eggs her chickens lay. Birdie also wants to help the other girls who are stuck in a life of working at the saloon, just as she did before she was able to break free. She is intent on sewing better, more civilized, dresses for these ladies. They have to have better clothes before they can leave.

Ned owns the merchantile and he buys eggs from Birdie as well as dresses to sell in his store. He tries to figure out any way to help her without making it look as though he is. Ned is the closest thing she has to a "male" friend. My opinion is that he fancies her a bit.

Book 4 - A Blessing for Beau
Beau is a stubborn cowboy who just acquired two nephews and a niece to raise when his sister and her husband died. The community steps in to help build a soddy house for them to live in since the fire destroyed everything. Plus, they bring some food for them to get through the winter with. Problem is, Beau has a lot of pride, but not much money. He especially does not want "charity" from others and he doesn't want advice in raising his new family. But he is a little out of his league here.

Ruth feels the Lord wants her to help the three orphan Pratt children. Since they stayed with Ruth and her family after the fire, she tends to want to mother them and take care of and provide for their needs.

Good, quick, light read. As with most "all books in one", a lot of in depth details are left out. This is more like four novellas in one book.

Book provided for an honest review.

Calico Brides is a collection of stories about the Calico sewing circle women. The younger women of the circle want to do missionary work closer to home. They each take a cause they can work on throughout the year. Through their local mission they find husbands along the way.
I came to care about all the different characters of Calico. It also makes me want to help more and in different ways. These are good clean reads. Each story can stand alone but better read together.

A Birthday Wish
Gladys Polson decides she is going to help Mr. Keller. He is all alone with his money and hardly leaves his house. Since his wife died. His son has moved away and never comes to visit. Her first thing is to decorate his house with baskets of greenery and bows by every window so he sees them when ever he looks out.
While she is on a ladder hanging the first one the door opens and knocks her ladder but she is caught. Haydn is visiting his grandfather. He does not want anyone to know of his relationship to him so he tells everyone he is visiting for business reasons.
Mr. Keller is grouchy does not want anyone's help. He tells his grandson that if he marries within two months while he is here he will pay to start a newspaper for Calico with him running it. Haydn is not willing to marry just anyone and on schedule.
They both wonder at Gladys reason for visiting and being nice to Mr. Keller.

Miss Bliss and the Bear
Annie Bliss has the idea to knit mittens, scarfs and socks for all the soldiers at the nearby fort. She thinks of her brother who is serving else ways.
Fort Chaplain Jeremiah tells all the soldiers to stay away from woman who bring trouble in his sermons. He does not want Annie to come back to the fort. So he gets to go to her house to talk about the project.
It goes over so well that The Captain's wife wants to get the lonely soldiers to social more with the town.
This in away is something we can do for are soldiers who are serving today or even those who are wounded in VA hospitals. Maybe not knit socks but something like that.

Buttons for Birdie

Birdie Landry is a former saloon girl and now Christian. She is trying to make her living from sewing and from chickens eggs. She needs to do it on her own. Birdie also wants to help other girls who are stuck working at the saloon. They need respectable dresses before they can leave and help finding a job.

Ned owns the store and is willing to buy her eggs for more than he can sell them. He wants to help her but she won't buy on credit. Ned tries to be her friend.

Birdie wants so bad to help her friends but won't let others help her help them. Finally she finds ways to help and let others help too.

A Blessing for Beau
Beau is a cowboy who's sister and brother-in-law died in a house fire everything they owned went to. He has come to raise his niece and nephews. The community has come to help to build a soddy house for them to live in. Plus some food for them to get to winter.
Beau has a lot of pride and not much money he does not want to accept others help in raising his new family especially the school teacher Ruth.

Ruth feels her mission project are the three orphan Pratt children. She knows all their clothes have burned up and she wants to make them clothes.
When Beau wants to keep the boys out of school she desperately wants him to let them keep learning. She wants to help more.

Delightful Read

All four stories were well written, although the first one I had read in a Christmas collection. The fourth one was unique because a few minor plot lines were matters rarely written about.

Calico Brides is a collection of four novellas featuring women of the Ladies Sewing Circle in historic Calico, Kansas. Each novella focuses on a certain member of the the sewing circle. The four women are Ruth, Birdie, Gladys, and Annie. Each member decides to take on a certain missionary project in the town of Calico. Ruth decides to help a family of orphans, Annie knits clothing for soldiers at the nearby fort, Birdie helps women from the saloon get their lives in order, and Gladys helps a crotchety recluse. Each woman's endeavor inevitably leads to love.

I really enjoyed these stories and I am giving Calico Brides 4 out of 5 stars. Each woman's story was very touching and their missionary projects were extremely inspirational. The entire book was filled with Christian wisdom and love, which I enjoyed. This book actually had more "Christianity" in it than most Christian books I've read, but it never came across off as preachy. Each young woman was so godly while still being human. I especially enjoyed the story of Birdie, a former prostitute. I loved how her story portrayed God's Love for us as sinners and how he's so willing to forgive us. She really was the epitome of the "born again" message.

According to the Romancing America blog, this book will be the last in the series. Unless I misunderstood, I'm just assuming from the date listed on the blog. It says as of May 2013 Barbour Publishing will shift their focus to "3-in-1 collections of stories that had previously been published as single Heartsong Presents books." I'm not entirely sure what that means as I am only vaguely familiar with Heartsong and have never actually read any. Even though I've only read two books so far in the Romancing America series, I'll be sad to see no new books coming out. Goodreads lists 55 books in the series so there is always plenty more of reading I can do in the series, of course!

Calico Brides by Darlene Franklin

Realy nice sweet stories of how God can use us in our own "backyard" so to speak. While ministering to those in China and around the world gives us a name and a reputation, helping those close to us gives us a better place to live in. I loved the stories even thou the first one about Gladys and Haydn had me confused on time frame (Christmas and Easterseend seemed to happen in a span of few weeks) and few moments that were over the roof ( i would die of emberasement if after 2 meetings my dad asked a guy of his intentions- it rediculous); i really enjoyd the other stories. Annie managed not only to dress an army in mittens and socks but also to tame a Bear and bring a piece of home to all soldiers. Birdie and Ned were my favorite. Her fight for independance and his fight for her heart helped not just to save soiled girls from the saloon but also to bring community together to believe in second chances and be less judgemental and more helpful. Ruth and Beau made me laugh and throw panches in the air at the same time. Such stubborn-stubborn pair. Beau was suppose to be the bear of this book.
What really impressed me in this book and i commend Darlene Franklin for it, is the real life example of verse Romans 8:28. Readers and Authors know that if we love our Lord enough to step out of our comfort zone for His children, He will bring blessings to us even if things seem to go the wrong way at the begining..

This was a sweet book! Haydn spends his time, fighting his feelings for her, and Gladys spends her time, loving his grumpy grandfather through her actions, despite her growing feelings for both the men. A true example of Christian charity and loving one's neighbor.

It ended a bit abruptly to me, but I'm hoping it continues slightly in the next book! I loved the resolution for Mack and the brother's understanding!!

I loved the premise of this story! God rescues us from a life of sin, and Birdie, with the help of a few great townsfolk, helps rescue the "soiled doves" that Birdie used to work with! No sin is unforgivable and no man (or woman) is outside of God's grasp! A beautiful testimony of God's redeeming love!

I felt like I read this book before, so maybe it was part of a different anthology, but the other books in this 4 in 1 collection definitely weren't. I thought the ending came on rather quickly. Yes, there were ideas throughout this story of them being a couple, but the transition didn't seem to happen naturally or slowly. It was almost like a chapter was missing. But it was a lovely book and this whole anthology was delightful!

These four novellas are about four different girls who are part of a sewing circle. These girls want to do some good deeds to help the needy people around town.

Gladys is helping an elderly man, Norman Keller. When his grandson, Haydn comes to town, Gladys can’t help but notice his good looks and attractive personality.

Annie helps the soldiers by knitting for them. While doing so, she catches the eye of a lieutenant.

Birdie is a former prostitute and now she is looking to help girls like her escape that life. Ned is a store owner and he finds himself wanting to help her.

Ruth is a schoolteacher, drawn to a couple of children who are now under the guardianship of their uncle. When Ruth decides to help the kids, their Uncle Beau isn’t sure how he feels about it.

Each of these stories were quick and easy to read. I enjoyed them and they made me smile. But as with all novellas, I wish there was more to read. However, I liked that each novella was connected to the next so that the story was one continuation, just with different characters as the main people.

I received a free ebook copy of this book from the publishers through NetGalley in exchange for my honest review. I did not receive any compensation for this review nor was I required to write a positive review. All opinions stated are my own.

This is the story of four friends who each take on a “project” to help a person in need. The book tells the short story of each of them as they do their good deeds.

What I liked: The stories where interesting and I liked all the characters. I also liked how all the stories where tied together and each story followed the other so it felt more like one book then four short stories.

What I did not like: Being short stories I know that the development of each of the separate stories is not going to be as in depth as a full length novel but I felt the romance of each of the stories could have been better. The couples would know each other a very short time and it just felt like they needed just a little more time to make it feel believable.

Over all this was a good addition to the Romancing America line and I really liked how all the stories tied together and the unique plot of each individual story. I just wish the romance could have had a little more development and not felt so rushed.

This was an enjoyable book that combined four separate, yet interwoven stories. Four women in a sewing circle decide to bless those in need. Each woman finds a different project (person or family) to help. The stories were easy to read and well written. While all were a little predictable, that was not a bad thing. I did enjoy this book and it was fun to have all four stories continue from one to the other. All of the stories did a good job of showing God's love and provision for everyone. All of the women find that blessing others ends up blessing them as well and brings love into their lives. I found these stories to be uplifting. I received a copy of this book from Barbour Publishing in exchange for my honest review.

I randomely picked this up at the library one day. It just wasn't that great of a book :( This book is about 4 friends and each on of them has their own short story. In each of the four stories, you know how it is going to end by the 4th page. I found myself speedily skimming these stories because they were very dry and boring.

A wonderful God centered book full of life and wonder. My only problem is that ititv had to end! I felt the characters were memorable but not very deep. I really enjoyed the plot and would recommend this book.
