With the world of technology advancing and face-to-face communication becoming less common, it is no wonder the many "manner” and "etiquette” books fall short of reaching young people who are fully enveloped in a digital age. Faye de Muyshondt’s socialsklz:-) for success is not only relevant, touching on topics of email, social networking, cyberbullying, and smartphones, but also breathes life into the basics: how to speak, shake hands, make conversation, and behave in all social settings. Although they are not typically taught in school, research has shown that teaching these skills increases academic scores. The book takes de Muyshondt’s highly successful NYC workshop and brings it to the homes of millions in this fun and interactive guidebook designed to direct parents in teaching kids the skills necessary for success without being perceived as a "nag."
Received book for review from NetGalley. This books provides a wonderful foundation for those "basic" things that children need to learn. This is a changing world with technology making it easier for people avoid interpersonal encounters. It is helpful for children to learn the manners and etiquette that will help them maneuver in their environment.
This was a fantastic book on teaching children a bit about etiquette, making (and keeping) friends, and those social skills that children desperately need but don’t seem to be taught very often.
Really liked this book. Thought it might be to old for my kids and all about Internet but it was very useful with common sense stuff to teach kids like correct handshake, eye contact, introducing themselves. Correct way to answer phone and take messages and leave messages. Recommend to all parents.
Intention and content are solid, practical tips for parents and teachers. Teachers with formal training and experience, like myself, will find some of this superficial and capitalizing a bit on one of the education topics du jour, SEL.
I read this to get ideas for activities for my students. What I learned is that everyone who's anyone can learn at least something from this very quick read. Highly recommended.
