Hope is the faith of the young. Losing everything she holds dear, Puppysmiles embarks on the adventure of her life to find her mother, her hopes of meeting her again driving her through the horrors of a world not of her making. Too bad the Wastelands doesn't care about hope.
This was awesome, I found it to be a nice take on the equestrian wasteland of what a filly from before the bombs fell would think. The main character of Pink Eyes, Puppysmiles is just the cutest, she's an innocent canterlot ghoul filly who's body was preserved inside of an experimental hazmat suit developed by the ministry of peace. Throughout the story she learns many things, including what she is and what's she's not, along with many other heart breaking things. If you liked the other Fallout Equestria stories, here's another one to read that while is not as gruesome, is just as good.
Not as focused on grit and misogyny as its predecessor, Pink Eyes gives you what you want from a story about an innocent child in a world filled with hate, letting nothing drag her down. The character interactions, are also surprisingly strong. Arguably even moreso than that of the original's.
Simpler and shorter than your average Fallout Equestria fanfiction ( I am talking about the must read ones like original and Project Horizons), but in a brilliant way. It's that fascinating mix of the good and the bad again, just from the perspective of a child.
I definitively liked that this book was much shorter than the original Fallout Equestria, I have also listened to an audiobook while watching the text in an e-book. I really liked perspective little pony in defence suit that is always saying that something is wrong. Don't want to spoil.
Silly and cutesy, atypical take on the Equestrian wasteland, I'm not sure it's particularly clever, but it's a fun and childish, shorter traipse across the wasteland that while doesn't really expand all that much on the setting we love.
This sequel to Fallout: Equestria is only tangentially related to the original, with one significant background character shared between them. the setting itself has a somewhat different feel from the original; this Wasteland Equestria has a more "sci-fi" feel to it. And the plot and protagonist are very different too. And it's significantly shorter (though still novel-length).
But for all that, this is a really good continuation of the Fallout: Equestria setting and its differences are its strengths. Most notably, the protagonist is an innocent. Puppysmiles is just a filly, who grew up before the Apocalypse and spent the last two hundred years in a form of necromantic suspended animation. She views the Wasteland through a perspective that is virtually immune to fear or hatred. Indeed, her unique state of being makes her virtually immune to damage, too. Not that this makes her quest any less interesting.
Like the original FoE she picks up a group of supporting characters who follow her on her journey, and these characters provide a more down-to-earth "adult" perspective to contrast with Puppysmiles' cloud-cuckoolander innocence, and that works well too - I doubt I could have maintained interest in just Puppysmiles alone. But the mix was good.
In a way, Puppysmiles' innocence makes this an even more gut-wrenching story than the original FoE was. One scene in particular stuck with me and really exemplified how this worked. Puppysmiles had encountered an encampment of bandits, war-worn ponies who'd lived their whole lives killing and being killed and learning to be tough while surrounded by the worst things in the world. She started chatting with one of them, telling him about what Ponyville had been like before the war, as she remembered it. And this vicious killer broke down in tears, having been given a glimpse of something better than what he knew.
Puppy's quest is also gut-wrenching. You know it can't possibly have the ending Puppy hopes for, but her oblivious optimism makes you hope on her behalf. I found the ultimate conclusion to be immensely satisfying. But as mentioned earlier in this review, it's really the journey itself that fills out the meat of the story, and the side-quests that Puppy gets up to along the way - the ponies she meets and helps out without even really knowing she's helping are the legacy of her journey.
Fallout: Equestria is known for being gritty, gorey, and just a tiny bit hopeful. Despite this story focusing on a little filly, too naive to even understand death, at first, "Pink Eyes" does not hold back on those themes. Really, it just adds in an element of "well, shit happens" that makes the story all the harder.
Puppysmiles, a filly born before the Equestrian apocalypse and kept alive by technology, necromancy, and blind damn luck, travels along the Big 52 highway in search of her mommy! Along the way, lots of things try to kill her. Puppysmiles kills them back. Accidentally. Don't shoot the filly in the protective suit. Sometimes, the suit is there to protect YOU.
This has a definite video game feel, far in excess of the original "Fallout: Equestria." Though perhaps it's more accurate to say it feels like DLC. An extra plot, a bit short, but using the same base concepts. You won't see any F:E characters here, but you'll get the feel.
And the feels. The ending...um...be prepared.

Wow. That's all I can really say. This is such a new take on a gritty story. Initially, I thought that this was just an innocent little spin-off, but it evolved into something so much more. It slowly turned into a story that nobody could have predicted: one with deeper meaning. It's a story that depicts the value of innocence, something seldom seen in today's media, especially the other books in this series. The ending is heart wrenching, and made me cry in the middle of class, a once in a lifetime experience.
In the end, the authors purpose is clear and concise: violence is often used as an immediate solution to problems, but often, being above the predicament is a more important and simpler way to resolve conflicts.
All in all, the best Fallout: Equestria spin-off yet. I have to recommend it.
Uh...This was crazy and sad as hell. It's so sad! Víte, co se na konci stane... Proč já se sakra sázela, že nebudu brečet? Akorát to bolelo ještě víc, akorát uvnitř... Příběh o nevinnosti, která zůstává i v případě nenávisti a krutosti.
4/5* (lepší 4, na klasik FoE to nemělo, ale i tak to bylo hooodně dobré)
