De Egyptische religie is te scheiden in een openbaar en een prive-deel. Deze splitsing is ook te vinden in de opbouw van het boek. Na een korte inleiding gaat de auteur eerst in op de rol van de staat in de religie: de 'officiele' mythologie, de rol van tempels, priesters en de farao voor het tevreden stemmen van de vele goden. De tweede helft van het boek is gewijd aan de prive-aspecten van het geloof: de goden die thuis aanbeden werden, de voorouderverering, de religieuze gebruiken bij belangrijke gebeurtenissen als geboorte, ziekte en dood. De meest bekende daarvan zijn de begrafenisrituelen omdat die zo vaak zijn afgebeeld. Het boek besluit met een hoofdstuk over het mythologiseren van het oude Egypte (o.a. Hollywood, new age), een verklarende woordenlijst, lijst van musea met Egyptische collecties, een bibliografie en een register. Het boek schetst met de vele kleurenfoto's en lijsten van goden, attributen en farao's een compleet beeld van het onderwerp. De auteur, werkzaam bij het Petrie Museum of Egyptian Archeology, geeft in het deel over de prive-aspecten een aanvulling op bestaande literatuur. Druk in drie kolommen.

This is an impressively comprehensive deep dive into ancient Egyptian religion, mythology, and belief systems—so thorough it genuinely feels textbook-adjacent (in the best way). Lucia Gahlin covers the gods, cosmology, rituals, funerary practices, and religious symbolism with clarity and authority, making complex ideas accessible without flattening them. It’s dense, yes, but purposefully so: the kind of book you return to again and again rather than race through.

I especially appreciated the thoughtful extras. The inclusion of museums around the world with Egyptian collections grounds the material in the real, physical afterlives of these objects, while the suggested further reading makes this feel like the start of a much larger scholarly rabbit hole. And the hieroglyphs tucked beside the page numbers? A small but charming design touch that adds personality to an otherwise weighty tome.

This is a serious reference work that still remembers to delight.
