Parke Godwin was an American writer known for his lyrical yet precise prose style and sardonic humor. He was also known for his novels of legendary figures placed in realistic historical settings; his retelling of the Arthur legend (Firelord in 1980, Beloved Exile in 1984, and The Last Rainbow in 1985) is set in the 5th century during the collapse of the Roman empire, and his reinterpretation of Robin Hood (Sherwood, 1991, and Robin and the King, 1993) takes place during the Norman conquest and features kings William the Conqueror and William Rufus as major characters. His other well-known works include Waiting For The Galactic Bus (1988) and its sequel The Snake Oil Wars (1989), humorous critiques of American pop culture and religion.
Parke Godwin also worked as a radio operator, a research technician, a professional actor, an advertising man, a dishwasher and a maitre d' hotel.
Godwin's short fiction has appeared in several anthologies. His short story "Influencing the Hell out of Time and Teresa Golowitz," was the basis of an episode of the television series The Twilight Zone.
This one wasn’t my favorite in the series. Not a lot happened and it seemed to be a build up for the next graphic novel.
Hay Lin learns a Chinese legend about the four dragons. She uses it for her play in school. The legend tells the story of the origin of their powers and the heart of candrancer. The four dragons heard the cries of the people. Their food is running out, and they were all going to die soon because of the drought. They went to the jade emperor for help and he said he would help them, but he never did. So the dragons decided to help them. They got water from the sea to spray on the crops. The Jade emperor was outraged and punished. The four dragons locking them into separate mountains, unable to leave. The nymph, Xin Jing (heart of crystal) he was angered by the emperor’s actions. She couldn’t undo the emperors injustice, but she made sure their sacrifice wasn’t in vain. She absorbed each dragons essence and turn the four dragons into the four main rivers of China, the Black River, yellow river, red river and Pearl River. The yellow dragon loved Earth, the black dragon flew better than the others, so he controlled air. The red dragon loved water, and the pearl dragon controlled fire, and the nymph made their transformations possible.
They got a call from Mrs. Rudolph saying she needed their help. She was taking a family from Metamoor to their world, but their son got scared and ran off. They didn’t know where he could be so they attempted to travel to Candracar for answers. Hay Lin’s grandmother stopped them at the bridge and told them they demonstrated great strength, because there are desires and fears became real on the bridge. She showed them the story of the veil they learned that the bill was created to defend the universe from Metamoor. The ancient put up the veil as a barrier, until the light of Meridian rose to illuminate the dark world. That her arrival would reestablish balance, until this time the guardians would watch over the veil to protect the barrier and Elyon from the evil plans of Prince Phobos. They didn’t know Elon what is the light of Meridian. She was going to save the city and they need to protect her, but how when she was their enemy? Grandmother sent them back to their world and told them to look at the dog pound. They found him and released all the dogs.
There’s two new detectives, one is a psychologist, Maria and her muscular sidekick Joel. They are investigating Elyon’s family and their disappearance. They find drawings from when she was younger of a city and a girl flying over the city radiating like the sun. Cornelia thinks that Elyon draws without realizing it’s a bridge between the two worlds. The two detectives come to Irma’s house to question the girls and they find cornelian suspicious so they stake her house out. Vathek shows up as well was just about to head to help Cornelia. He said Elyon came to him asking him to help her free her adoptive parents. So he came to ask the guardians to help him will makes an astral drop of Matt‘s grandfather so he can drive them in the pet shop van. The detectives see them sneaking Cornelia into the van, so they try to follow them but Cornelia used to earth powers to make a plant grow in their engine. The guardians arrive at Elyon‘s house and use the portal to go to the prison. Cedric has already unleashed a giant bug to eat the adoptive parents, but the guardians came just in time. The heart of candracer not only saved them, but everyone in the prison. The guards tried to put them back in the prison, but Elon stopped them and used her powers to make the prison disappear by erasing it like her mother said she can erase any mistake. Elon sees her adoptive parents, but the guardians and her adoptive parents found safety before they could get to each other. And the guardians are met with the detectives in the basement of Elon’s house. Joel thinks the girls are innocent and they should leave them alone, but Maria thinks they still are guilty. There’s something weird about Maria. The guardians found a token inside the van some thing odd seems to be going on. Maria was also sneezing just like Vathek.
Elyon is starting to question her brother Phobos and her powers are starting to grow. She remembers her adoptive mother telling her that she can erase any mistake. We find out Phobos wants to absorb Elyon during the ceremony of her coronation. He also ordered Cedric to kill her adoptive parents. Phobos is excited. Elon was able to use her powers to make the prison disappear. He is excited because she’s officially ready for him to absorb, and he announces her coronation.
Will is still arguing with her mom. I wish they could just get along and talk about what’s going on between them. Her mom typically blows up and then we’ll storms off and they never actually completely talk about what’s wrong. Later, Will’s mom is planning on moving. She doesn’t think Will is happy. Even though Will just got asked out to a cool place with Matt and she’s finally getting along with cornelia and everything seems to be perfect. So obviously she’s not going to be happy about the fact that her mom wants her to move.

Originally, I was going to make mini-reviews for each volume, but I found I had the same problem with every volume. So instead of a review of each, I will review them collectively.
My first problem with them is that Disney Hyperion has a different definition of a volume. Actually, they’re not even called volumes, to be honest I don’t know what they are. Each “volume” has no more than two issues. I didn’t buy the books, but even if I did I wouldn’t waste well earned money on two issue volumes.
Every single issue has a cookie cutter format. I didn’t mind the first few issues, but I grew tired of it by book 4. Each chapter starts with the girls and their ordinary teenage problems, from family to boys to their friendship, then they get wrapped up in their powers or Meridian, then it get resolved rather quickly, and by the end of each chapter everything is fixed pretty well. In this way it is very episodic as they continue tackling the same problem, because of this the story does not flow as well as it could be.
Perhaps the pacing is worst problem. Everything here, happens too quickly. I don’t know if it’s because of the graphic novel format, but their resolutions are too fast, while the beginning is too slow. Some explanations about their world are quick and not enough for me to understand them.
I also happened to notice that these thirteen year old girls, are “sexed” up when they transform into their guardian uniform. And I’m not sure how I feel about that.
The story is there. It’s a great story too. It has all the wonderful elements of magic, crime fighting, strong females, magical creatures, teen angst, other worlds, the art is beautiful and fun, it’s even funny at times, but it’s not being executed correctly. For this reason, I’m compelled to give it a three. It’s an enjoyable read, but it’s not the best thing in the world. It even pains me to say this, but the television show was indeed much better than the graphic novels.
P.S. I realize this is a very different review from Tuesday’s. Also, the real reason I’m not continuing the series is because, my library doesn’t have the rest of the comics and I’m not going to pay to read them either.
