A lonely career woman stranded in a blizzard, a disillusioned man who has cut himself off from women. When he rescues her from the snow and takes her into his home, the spirit of Christmas and his little girl's love work their magic.
USA Today bestselling author, Helen Scott Taylor, had her first book released in 2009. The Magic Knot, won the American Title contest, was a Golden Heart® finalist, and was chosen as one of Booklist's top ten romances of 2009. Since then, she has published other novels, novellas, and short stories in both the UK and USA.
Helen lives in South West England near Exeter in Devon. As well as her wonderful long-suffering husband, she shares her home with a Westie and a birman cat. She believes that deep within everyone there's a little magic.
It's hard to rate a book that is only 6 chapters long, but this was a nice Christmas read.
The inherent problem with with novellas is the small amount of time an author is given to develop a believable relationship. Novella's that really work for me are those that feature characters that have known one another prior to the start of the book. Eve and Tom meet for the very first time in the first chapter of this book.
This is a "stranded during a blizzard" story, and this is a theme that I admit...I do enjoy. Tom's daughter, Polly, is the character who really falls in love with Eve. She desperately wants a "mother" for Christmas, and connects with Eve instantly. I completely bought into the little girl's love for Eve, but struggled a bit more to believe in Tom's love for Eve. The attraction was there, but there just wasn't enough time spent to make me believe that Tom's feelings for Eve weren't just out of loneliness and a desire to make his daughter happy.
A nice, quick read...but there are better Christmas novella's out there.
Book Description: A heartwarming tale for Christmas.
A lonely career woman stranded in a blizzard, a disillusioned man who has cut himself off from women. When he rescues her from the snow and takes her into his home, the spirit of Christmas and his little girl's love work their magic.
Page Count: 68 Pages
My Thoughts: Sometimes you really just need a heartwarming story to cleanse the reading palette and A Family for Christmas fit the bill perfectly. This story was........in a word........SWEET!
In just 68 pages you felt such a depth of emotions from the characters -- Tom, Eve, and little Polly. In a season where we often lose sight of what is truly important, this story reminds us of love and family.
I would definitely recommend this to anyone looking for a sweet and heartwarming story.
Won Merry Christmas Romance by Helen Scott Taylor in a book giveaway. There are many books included in this one novel. . A Family for Christmas Eve Scott was on her way to a meeting but the little lamb made her brake and the car landed in the ditch. She called to cancel the meeting due to bad weather and got a call into roadside assistance but they couldn't guarantee when they'd get a man out there. She's in a remote country setting away from main roads but a tractor does come to her rescue-Tom Millington and she's found his lamb. She spends the night at his farm along with his young daughter Polly and the housekeeper. The next day they venture out and discover the car is totaled. Tom and Polly go about their Christmas chores: getting the tree in the house and decorating it while Eve attends to her business via her phone as the laptop is broken. Polly loves that Eve is there and the female attention as her mother had walked out on them many years ago. Even though the setting is in the English countryside and the dialect and phrases are English it's easy to follow along. Also with just the three characters it's a very easy going book to read. Love that Eve wants to pitch in and help around the house with making a meal. Eve grows an attachment to them and they to her but she must leave to get back to her job.. When she's offered a new position she has to think what really is important in her life. . A
Lost in a blizzard, Eves rescues a lamb and because of that one decision her whole future changes. The family she meets-- a special little girl and her handsome loving father--make her realize that although she loves her brother's family, what she needs is one of her own. Because the little girl missed having a mother in her world, she adopts Eve and hangs on to her for dear life. I enjoyed following this wonderful character down her road to discovery. I really cared that she and her hero would finally find their way into each other's lives for good. A sweet love story with sad and happy all tied up into a special Christmas delight.
It may be different in the UK or even in some areas of the US but I can't imagine any woman immediately going "home" with a stranger the way the heroine did. I enjoyed the story but couldn't give a higher rating. The opening was just too implausible for me.
AWWWWW - This was such a sweet book! Yes it was simple, yes it was predictable, but YES I loved it! The main characters - all three of them, stole my heart! I had never heard of this author and now I want to read everything!
Eve is driving through a lonely area in the English country side during a winter storm when she rescues a baby lamb and gets stuck in the snow as it is getting dark. Tom, a local farmer comes along in his tractor and turns out to be the owner of the lamb and takes Eve home to stay where it is safe until the storm ends.
Polly his five-year-old daughter quickly comes to care for Eve, so when she leaves to go back to the world of work, she finds it hard to leave both Polly and Tom. Realizing what she is missing and Tom realizing he is attracted to her too, they reconnect just before Christmas and she gets A Family for Christmas.
It was a quick read and well written but I didn't feel much chemistry between the two main characters, especially for her to give up her dream job. I felt there was more of a bond between the woman and the man's daughter, which was nice to see, but I felt it overshadowed the romance.
A wonderful story about finding love, family, and filling in missing gaps in lives where the people didn't fully realize something was missing. It takes place at Christmastime so it has that magical cozy feeling mixed into the already touching and heartwarming story!
A lovely story about moving headlong into what you think you want only to discover that the universe might have other plans for you. This is a story to warm your hearts and hopefully also add to the Christmas vibes. Enjoy!
This was a cute, quick Christmas read. About 90 minutes to read. When a blizzard strands you in the middle of nowhere, who would think their life is about to change.
My Take: 5 Stars! Oh! I have found myself a new Romance author to read more from! Helen Scott Taylor’s, “A Family for Christmas” has been my favorite Christmas story so far this season out of all the Christmas books I’ve read, and I want to read more books written by this author! This is a clean romance of 75 pages long. Out of the three main characters in this book, two adults and a little girl, the only one out of the three who knew what two people needed most was someone to in their lives to love, and that was a little girl named Polly! Eve was driving to a meeting that was hours away from her home when a blizzard started. It was dark out by now, and very difficult to see, when an animal of some sort was in the road in front of her. She slowed to miss it, but the ice and snow had her land in the ditch instead. As Eve was sitting in the ditch, she learned she had no cell service, either. Great. She was really stuck now. She looked around for other vehicles. None. What felt like forever did end when finally along came a tractor. The driver was a man named Tom. He explained to her there was absolutely NO getting her out of that ditch that night with the way the snowstorm was coming down. They could barely see a thing. He told her he realized this sounded strange to her, but she could either try to stay warm in her car overnight, or she could go home and stay with him. She was really stuck between a rock and a hard place. Either sit here and worry about dying of hypothermia, or maybe be safe with Tom. He had a friendly face, so she leerily trusted her gut and went with him. Once they reached his very nice home, (phew!) she was met by his six-year-old daughter, Polly. She was adorable! As the night went on, Polly became really close to Eve, even clingy. Later that evening Eve finds out about Tom’s ex-wife. Polly dropped more than a few hints very loudly to her father that she wants a new Mommy! LOL! That sure put Tom and Eve feeling odd! This was odd enough to begin with! As they talked well into the evening, both of them realized they really would like to share their lives with another person, never quite realizing it before. Both were attracted to each other, and Tom could see Polly was more than accepting of another woman in the house, heck, she was begging for Eve to stay and not leave the next day! Eve also thought to herself that she should be thinking more of settling down because if it was like this, she wanted this! Both Eve and Tom still feel awkward into the evening. They realize this is such an odd predicament they were in, especially with Polly interjecting things such as, ‘I want a Mommy’! This was the good part of this story and how this author wrote this book. You got an explanation of what, why, and where each character was at in their life in regards to dating, marriage, or neither, or maybe just a thought, then into the future the best each could do at the time, especially how things can change in a second, such as Eve’s car accident, and Tom’s divorce. Slowly they were learning more about each other, let alone how attracted they were to each other, but that they did not let the other in on. For what we would think was odd, the author had a believable explanation for it. The characters even discussed the oddness of the situation. We must give her some bravo for weaving that excellence into this story! Wonderful character development, discussions, daughter wanting a Mommy, etc., so even if you might think it is too quick for a possible relationship to begin, or not, there is a reason for everything, and a time for everything, too, right?! The next day Eve finds out she's stuck at the house with Tom and Polly, again! Oooo. This is going to be hard to leave with Polly really clinging to her even more. In fact, Polly started planning what they were going to do through the day! Yikes! You'll have to pick this short story up and read it one sitting. It’s one that will warm your heart! It's blessed with a little Christmas magic! I would LOVE to tell you more about this story, but then it would ruin the rest for you! Enjoy the rest!
I have read and loved Helen Scott Taylor's contemporary romances Unbreak My Heart (review) and Oceans Between Us (review). When the author very kindly gifted me a copy of A Family For Christmas for reviewing her books (yes, she is super kind!), I knew I'd love this one too and guess what? No surprises there, I totally loved it! Helen Scott Taylor's romances have a way of making your heart feel warm and safe. They make you believe that love exists and it happens. A Family For Christmas is a short story about workaholic Eve, who is mourning the loss of her parents, finds her car get stuck in the snow and she is rescued by the very adorable banker/farmer/dad, Tom who has a lovely daughter and a not so smart ex-wife. Eve develops a very intimate relationship with Tom's daughter, Polly. Polly was such a innocent and cuddly little girl. All of Helen Scott Taylor's characters are extremely lovable and genuinely kind people. Eve and Tom are no different. A Family For Christmas is an absolutely adorable story filled with happiness, joy, smiles and all things Christmas. It's the kind of story that makes you feel cuddly and keeps you warm, the perfect Christmas read. Actually, the perfect read no matter what time of the year it is! The story is full of warmth and niceness. I loved reading it and the epilogue made me go all 'Aww!'.
Helen Scott Taylor brings us a sweet romance with a Christmas theme. This story is about a young woman struggling to raise her young son and a chance at a second beginning with an old friend. Rachel Carne is a young, single mother who has been struggling to raise her son, Toby, without any help from his father, Greg. During a storm late one night a tree crashes into her house causing a lot of structural damage. Luckily, with it primarily hitting Toby's bedroom, her son was uninjured. Not knowing what else to do, she call her father for advice. He tells her he will call Ian Harper, a young man who owns his own construction business, to come to her aid. Ian Harper has known the Carne family for ages and owes them for helping him become the man he is now. Years ago after his mother passed away and he had tarnished his reputation, Jeff and Irene Carne to a chance on him when no one else would and gave him a job. When hearing of Rachel's problem, he assured Jeff he would handle it. He was skeptical about how serious the problem truly was, because when he knew her 8 years ago, she was a spoiled girl who was prone to exaggerations. Nothing prepared him for the actual devastation he encountered. Rachel's house was literally falling down around her. Ensuring Rachel and Toby's safety was the first priority. Ian offered for them to stay at his house until Rachel could work things out with her insurance. Rachel encounters problems filing her claim which leads to her stay at Ian's being extended. After spending more time together, Ian sees a much more grown up Rachel and this woman is very appealing. As the old saying goes, once burned twice shy, Rachel is not looking for a love interest. At one time she had a huge crush on Ian, but that was 8 years ago and now her first priority was Toby. I loved this story line. It takes you on a journey of what was, isn't always the same years later. The characters are lovable and you find yourself cheering for these two very damaged hearts to find happiness. I wish the author would have been more descriptive of the area in which the story took place. I also think if she had of given Rachel's background sooner in the story it would have shown her true strength and growth. I would recommend this to anyone who wants a quick read and an enjoyable read.
Although this story may be predictable, the characters are fresh and very likable. The message in this story is a great reminder for many of us and our families.
In the middle of a snow storm, with blizzard conditions, a animal in the road and fish tailing the rear of the car right off the road. What next? The animal turns out to be a lamb and its freezing outside of the car. Luckily for Eve, Tom is out looking for the lamb and finds them both. Road service is swamped and Tom offers a room for the night with him and his six year old daughter. When the past catches up with Tom and Eve they spend the snowed in time looking for answers, even little Polly has a few of her own. This is very well written with lots of emotions that give this beautiful love story a really good read. Our cast are strong and bring it to a wonderful conclusion. You will fall in love with all of them. Join me in finding their answers that will lead to A Family For Christmas.
A sweet short story of a professional woman who runs off the road in a snow storm to be rescued by a lamb. That's right a lamb who belongs to a precocious little girl with--you guessed it. A dad. The little girl quickly wraps the lady around her little finger and romance ... at Christmas quickly develops. Other than the dad letting his daughter get by with tantrums, the story was lovely. Minus 2 stars for the tantrums AND the father letting his daughter get by with them. And there's the ending. The story DOES have an end. That wasn't the problem. Let's just say I wanted a "final" ending in fewer days than the author did.
A Family for Christmas, wow is really all I can say. I am not one for the Romance Kind of books, however This book kept me reading it until I finished it, because the story is one about Family, Christmas, and things that happen to bring other's together. It's a very heart warming book, one that you need to read and sit back having a cup of tea or coffee in a room, that the lights are low in or even burning a candle or a fireplace is even better. It will make you feel so good about yourself and the writer Helen Scott Taylor is an outstanding writer and I will be reading more of her books.
Sarah's Review: I had this one hidden on my Kindle for a while and finally got around to reading it. I am glad I found this story when I did because I really needed an uplifting romance and one that involved Christmas. There was something about this story that hit my soul to its core. I can't explain it either.
What I love most about this story is how a snow storm, a lamb and a little girl all came together to lead two people to fall in love. This story gave me hope for the future and that sometimes fate has a way of changing how you view your life.
This short holiday romance was really sweet. I loved the characters of Tom, Eve and Polly...and even the lamb Pickles (what a name!). It was short (which you knew when you got it), but it was enjoyable. It told the story of a woman being stranded in a blizzard (Eve), a man rescuing her(Tom), and the young daughter (Polly)and how they found that they were meant to be a family. A heartwarming Christmas story. Loved it.
Eve, a career woman headed to a meeting in another town, is stranded out in the country during a blizzard. Tom just happens to come along and rescue her. He takes her back to his house where Eve meets his young daughter, Polly.
Eve and Tom and Polly fall in love, and everything turns out happy. This is a cute, feel-good story and a very short novella--68 pages.
The thing I didn't like about it was when Tom asked Eve to move in with him. Why didn't he marry her first?
All Eve was trying to do was to get to her meeting when her car goes off the road to avoid a lamb. Tom came to her rescue and took her in until the roads were cleared. It's only been Tom and his little girl but when she meets Eve she is instantly taken and soon so will Tom. This is the story of finding love again and opening your heart up to the possibilities of finding the one for you. This is a sweet read and is bound to restore your faith in love and the all the joy that comes with it.
A nice, clean romance ideal for the holiday season. Set in rural England, it features a disillusioned single dad and a career-oriented but very lonely woman, who are brought together by a snow blizzard and a Cupid lamb. It is a quick and enjoyable sweet read that will warm your heart. Ideal for a snowy day, with a warm blanket and a cup of hot chocolate. I would recommend it to fans of clean romance.
I kind of wanted to give this book a three. I am not a fan of novella's, but it was free on Kindle. Novella's are too condensed and there is no character development which makes it hard to get engrossed in, but this was a cute hour and a half read. Completely cheesy, but adorable. This is a great book if you have just a couple of hours to curl up this Christmas season and read some fluff.
