About the author

Menelaos Stephanides, the author of ‘Greek Mythology’, originally studied economics in Athens but his main preoccupation was writing.

For more than twenty-five years he concentrated, with great success, on the retelling of ancient Greek myths, tirelessly studying the source materials to achieve his literary version of the many stories. Working with his brother, the artist and illustrator Yannis Stephanides, he wrote and published the 18-volume series ‘Greek Mythology’ for children, which was translated into several languages and later reissued as a pocket book for older readers. He then turned his attention to more recent Greek tradition, studying hundreds of folk tales the most appealing of which he retold in the highly successful 10-volume series ‘Folk Tales from Greece’.

Menelaos Stephanides’ name is now familiar in many parts of the world, thanks to the translation of both his mythology and the folk tales into several foreign languages. In 1989 his book ‘Jason and the Argonauts’ was awarded two Pier Paolo Vergerio honourable distinctions by the University of Padua, while in 1998 his entire published work was recommended by the Hellenic Ministry of Education for inclusion in school libraries, having already long been recognised as a source of reference for publishers, the reading public and educationalists.

Páris levou Helena para Troia (ou Ilion), e o marido de Helena Agamenon reúne vários aliados para uma guerra. Essa história todo mundo conhece (ou deveria), mas a Ilíada se concentra em um período especifico: em uma guerra que dura quase 10 anos, Aquiles o herói, se chateia com uma decisão de Agamenon e decide não mais lutar, mudando a sorte dos Aqueus (os gregos). Quando seu melhor amigo morre pelas mãos de Heitor, príncipe de Troia, Aquiles volta em vingança.

Entretanto, mais que o plot da Ilíada, a sua graça (pelo menos para mim) e viver dentro de um mundo completamente diferente do meu. Aqui mergulhamos em intrigas de deuses, em um mundo onde homens provam o valor através da espada e onde toda uma linhagem parece está ali, naquele preciso momento, sendo apresentada para os humanos, com uma grande fofoca contada.

Homero constrói aqui em poesia a ser declamada, uma ode a coragem e nos apresenta deuses tão humanos que lutam e manipulam pelo que acreditam. Não é fácil atravessar seus versos se você é um leitor iniciante, mas indico para leitores mais encorpados.

Vamos através dessa história acompanhar lutas e mortes descritas com a vividez de um filme de ação (pelo menos foi como eu o imaginei) e adentramos a um mundo que se move como o nosso, mas erguido em outros preceitos.

Recomendo essa versão da Peguin com textos que nos apresenta um pouco sobre o contexto da obra, mapas da região e inclusive a discussão sobre a existência ou não de Homero. Para leitores amadores, nos situa naquele tempo e espaço e acho que merece ser lido depois da leitura (tenho dificuldade de ler qualquer coisa sem ser o livro antes da história) e às vezes durante.

O grande livro que inicia a literatura ocidental. Não tem como não ler mas sobretudo se divertir com o humor e as tiradas de Homero. Vale a pena!

Sem dúvida está entre os 10 melhores livros que já li na vida. Quando começamos a ler e estudar mitologia grega, sempre vai aparecer alguém falando da Ossétia e a Ilíada e por qual começar, e nota-se uma preferência notória pela odisseia, e foi assim que segui. Certamente a volta de Ulisses para casa talvez seja uma das maiores aventuras do mundo ocidental tendo inspirado diversos autores, no entanto a Ilíada é incrível, uma verdadeira imersão no Olimpo e em suas preferências e interferência por seus mortais preferidos. Um daqueles livros, que te deixa orfāo ao final da leitura. Recomendo uma pesquisa prévia ao Deuses do Olimpo antes de iniciar a leitura

Kisah Kuno dalam Warna Modern

Kisah-kisah dewa-dewa Yunani sudah menjadi bagian dari kebudayaan dunia. Kisah dewa, manusia setengah dewa, dan para pahlawan, dalam literatur Yunani, sudah menjadi bagian tak terpisahkan dalam khazanah cerita dunia. Kisah penguasa semesta Zeus yang membawa petir di tangannya, kecantikan Afrodite sang dewi cinta, keganasan Ares sang dewa perang, kebijaksanaan Atena, atau permainan musik Apollo, bukan lagi sekadar jadi kekayaan literatur dunia.
Banyak nama dari mitologi Yunani yang lantas terkenal dalam bidang-bidang lainnya, misalnya psikologi. Jika kita menyebut Oedipus Complex untuk perasaan dan pengaruh ibu yang terlalu kuat, nama tersebut berasal dari tokoh Oedipus yang mencintai ibunya. Atau jika kita menyebut kata Narsisisme untuk istilah kecintaan diri yang berlebihan, maka nama itu berasal dari tokoh Narkisus yang tampan yang jatuh cinta pada dirinya sendiri.
Maka penerbitan Seri Mitologi Yunani (18 jilid, penutur ulang Menelaos Stephanides, ilustrator Yannis Stephanides, Pustaka Utama Grafiti, Jakarta, 1991-1993), untuk pembaca remaja, sejak buku pertama Pertempuran Para Titan sampai buku ke-17, Odise, patutlah disambut sebagai sebuah usaha untuk memperkenalkan mitologi Yunani ini sebagai suatu kesatuan yang utuh. Artinya, jika selama ini para remaja mengenal tokoh-tokoh mitologi Yunani secara sepintas kilas, dengan membaca keseluruhan seri ini akan makin jelas sosok tokoh-tokoh, karakter, dan perlambangan sifat-sifat mereka itu.
Dewa yang Manusiawi
Seri ini memperlihatkan urutan penceritaan yang runtut, dengan pembabakan cerita berdasarkan Kisah Dewa Olimpus (Seri A), Dewa dan Manusia (Seri B), dan Para Pahlawan (Seri C). Pada bagian pertama yang terdiri dari enam judul buku, pembaca akan diperkenalkan dengan dua belas dewa Yunani yang paling besar dan paling dihormati. Keduabelas dewa tersebut adalah Zeus (penguasa langit), Hera (istri Zeus), Afrodite (dewi keindahan dan cinta), Apollo (dewa terang dan seni musik), Hermes (dewa perdagangan), Demeter (dewi pertanian), Artemis (dewi malam bulan purnama, hutan, dan perburuan), Hefestus (dewa api dan kerajinan tangan), Ares (dewa perang), Atena (dewi kebijaksanaan, seni, dan perang yang adil), Poseidon (dewa laut), dan Hestia (dewi rumah tangga dan perapian abadi).
Bagian awal seri ini menceritakan tentang ke-12 dewa Yunani dan mitos-mitos yang berkaitan dengan mereka. Atena misalnya, dewi kebijaksanaan yang namanya dipakai sebagai nama ibukota Yunani, dikisahkan lahir dari kepala sang penguasa, Zeus (buku ke-6: Palas Atena). Mitos-mitos kelahiran dan kejadian para dewa ini, sebagaimana layaknya mitos memberikan porsi yang besar pada imajinasi pembuatnya. Tetapi pengarang buku ini memberikan catatan-catatan yang menghubungkan mitos-mitos tersebut dengan pemikiran masa kini. Bahwa Atena dilahirkan dari kepala Zeus, secara logika adalah suatu kemustahilan. Tetapi jika dilihat sebagai simbol, maka kelahiran melalui kepala ini melambangkan kebijaksanaan dan keadilan sang dewi.
Karakter dewa-dewa Yunani, yang konon tingkatnya lebih tinggi dari manusia ini, penuh dengan kontradiksi. Janganlah berharap dewa-dewa ini murni sebagai tokoh-tokoh yang baik dan dipuja-puja. Bahkan Zeus pun tak luput dari perbuatan yang tidak adil, seperti ketika ia menghukum Prometeus, dewa sahabat manusia, dengan hukuman rantai (buku ke-8: Prometeus). Atau juga karakter jahat Hera yang membuang anaknya Hefestus; karakter Ares yang selalu menginginkan perselisihan, perpecahan, dan perang; atau kisah penyelewengan Ares dan dewi cinta Afrodite (buku ke-5: Singgasana Emas)
Penggambaran dewa-dewa dengan sifat manusia ini cukup menarik sebagai perlambangan atas kehidupan manusia masa kini. Orang-orang Yunani kuno, dengan kemampuan imajinasi mereka yang tinggi, rasa keindahan yang didukung kondisi alam mereka yang permai, telah melahirkan kisah-kisah besar yang menarik dari zaman ke zaman, paling tidak sebagai bahan bacaan tentang perlambangan karakter manusia.
Keberanian Berpikir
Salah satu hasil pemikiran dan filsafat Yunani yang ada di belakang mitos-mitos ini adalah keberanian berpikir. Dewa-dewa Yunani yang berkuasa atas manusia itu, pada akhirnya juga digugat oleh manusia sendiri. Ketika Prometeus, figur titan (dewa Yunani yang berbadan besar dan berkekuatan hebat) penolong umat manusia dihukum rantai di pegunungan Kaukasus, para sahabatnya meratapinya.
“Aku ajarkan kepada manusia seni dan pengetahuan. Aku ajari mereka membaca dan menulis. Aku ajari mereka membangun rumah, dan aku berikan kepada mereka kehangatan hati,” ujar Prometeus.
“Tapi mengapa kau dihukum untuk semua kebaikan itu?” kata para Okeanida, dewi-dewi air putri Okeanus.
“Kaulihat bagaimana hukumanku untuk semua itu. Tapi dengarkan kata-kataku. Seandainya aku melakukan kejahatan, mungkin aku tak akan dihukum sama sekali. Ketidakadilan menimbulkan hukuman yang paling berat untuk mereka yang berjuang menentangnya,” kata Prometeus (h. 8 buku ke-8: Prometeus).
Dialog Prometeus dan para Okeanida ini memperlihatkan kecaman terhadap ketidakadilan hukuman Zeus, sang penguasa dewa dan manusia. Bahkan para Okeanida itu bernyanyi dalam lingkaran suci teater: “Kami telah belajar membenci para pengkhianat!” Dan salah satu pengkhianat itu adalah Zeus! Hal ini memperlihatkan betapa radikalnya pemikiran dan filsafat Yunani yang tersembul dalam mitos-mitos Yunani ini.

This abridged version made it easier to follow the story, and I really enjoyed the read! There's a lot of violence but also moments that make you realise the complexity of being human. The story is very character-driven which is I think what made it so compelling to me because I generally don't really read war or action books. Would definitely come back to re-read it, and I'm looking to read The Odyssey soon! :-)

I would want to give this rendition a 4.3/5. It covers the great Trojan war as well as it could within the challenge of keeping it to a paperback pocket book. The story of the mortals and the immortals is not easy to follow and this one does a stellar job of it. You feel for Achilles’ distress and anger, Hector’s frustration and Paris’ folly as his love for Helen spells doom for the entire city of Troy.

Excelente livro! Reunindo várias histórias prévias e posteriores à própria Ilíada, o autor nos apresenta de forma completa e didática, mas sem ser pedante, todo o contexto da Guerra de Tróia e de seus participantes (deuses, semideuses ou apenas humanos), facilitando muito o entendimento da obra. Perfeito! Mas ainda vou fazer uma resenha melhor e mais decente.

Really good extended summary of the Iliad and gives more details from other sources for the story before and after the short timespan that the Iliad covers.

Would’ve been nice to know the sources for the parts that were not originally contained in Homers poem, but otherwise a great read.

Táto kniha mi zmenila život, neskutočne nádherné kresby, ktoré si inak viem predstaviť aj ako tetovanie, ...

Túto knihu čítam od 8mich rokoch pravidelne, vždy mi pomáhala pochopiť správanie ľudí, keď viem ako scenáristi a autori píšu knihu, ale v momente keď mám čítať väzbu na mňa - často veci nedávajú zmysel, alebo konám úplne hlúpo oproti tomu akoby som mala byť a čo mi rozum hovorí. Táto kniha však aj vo mne stvorila ideál priatľstva až za hrob aj keď dnes už na priateľstvo neverím, ...

Tieto ilustrácie podľa wikipedii, dostali nejakú cenu a ja musím povedať, že mi veľmi pomáhali v identifikovaní sa v príbehu, pre mňa boli a sú grécki bohovia osobnosti, reálne bytosti eminencia ľudskosti. Ilustrácie čerpajú z gréckeho maliarstva a napriek tomu, sú neskutočne abstraktné i reálne - ich farebnosť mi dnes v čomsi pripomína barokové maliarstvo, aj keď to znie hlúpo.

Teraz ku knihe, už dlhšie obdobie som si túto knihu chcela prečítať asi 99x za svoj život, ale akosi som ju v detskej izbe nevedela nájsť, veľmi som sa bála, že je stratená. Dlho som bola presvedčená, že to je čisto Homérova Iliada, ale vyzerá to, že nie, musím si kúpiť a prečítať originál, ale zdá sa mi, že aj to už bolo....

Btw novinka po 99 násobnom prečítaní dievčina čo mení všetko čoho sa dotkne na obylie s menom Sperma. :D a kočiš Achilleusovho bojového voza s menom: Automedont.

Nechajme prehovoriť najznámejšie dielo o ludskom plemene:

"Potom prehovoril Oddysseus. S veľkou inteligenciou a presvedčivosťou vyzdvihoval výhody mierového riešenia a strašné dôsledky vojny. Na záver povedal:
Mier je svetlo a život sám; je to chlieb a soľ našej existencie; mier je láska a tvorivosť. Vojna je ničnie a beznádej; je to oheň a černota smrti. Vojna poslúži len krkavcom a supom!"

Nepriateľ je tiež človek, ktorý bojuje a trpí, ktorý miluje svojich blízkych a prelieva krv za svoju domovinu.

"Tej noci, Achilleus vyčerpaný prenasledovaním Hektora, ľahol na piesok a zaspal. Potom vo sne uvidel nad sebou stáť Patrokol, ktorý ho žiadal, aby ho pochovali hneď, nech sa jeho duch oslobodí v plameňoch.
"Keď ma spálite," dodal, "zložte moje kosti do tej istej urny, do ktorej neskôr zložia tvoje. Odo dňa, odkedy ma tvoj otec prijal do svojho domu, nás nič nerozdelilo. Nech je to tak aj po smrti."

I read this book a long time ago, in my late childhood. I have to say that this was one of the best epics I had back then.

This book is definitely not the one you look up to while doing a review of Trojan war for a school project. But this book is a great one for those who haven't read the details of the story. It's such a great overall introduction.

This is an abridged and edited version of the Iliad . A good introduction for people that want to read about the Iliad story in an accessible way.
