Araneae Nation #2

A Feast of Souls

Rate this book
The only way to save her is to bind their souls as one.

Araneae Nation, Book 2

Born with the ability to communicate with the dead, few things take Mana by surprise. But when a canis lopes into her life, announcing himself as the long-dead father of a childhood friend, she’s shocked. To make matters worse, he has a dire message that she alone can deliver.

Now Mana must face Vaughn, the male who inspired one too many girlish fantasies, and impart the spirit’s message—without acknowledging her source—so the soul can be laid to rest.

With rumors of a burgeoning clan war setting his nerves on edge, the last thing Vaughn needs is for an innocent to get caught in the crosshairs. But the woman he remembers as an awkward girl refuses to leave his side until he’s heard her out. That’s not the only change in her that calls to him. Her kindness soothes his battle-scarred soul—and he craves her in ways a warrior shouldn’t.

When they are both captured, they learn of an even greater threat. The plague devastating the southlands has come to his clan home. And his best—and only—chance to keep his people alive is the female who walks among the dead.

Product Warnings
This book contains one fierce hero with a nose for danger, one stubborn heroine who smells like trouble, and one wolfish spirit who makes most relationships with the in-laws seem downright tame. Fur, fangs and some biting should be expected. But never fear, the hero has a sword, and he knows how to use it.

I continue to be impressed with this great fantasy romance series. I really enjoyed book one and this second installment is just as strong. The world building is fresh and woven skillfully throughout the story. The characters are well-drawn and easy to root for. And the romance really hits the spot, with just the right blend of emotional pull and sexual tension.

We first met our hero and heroine in A Hint of Frost. Mana is still in Araneidae territory, where she was brought after saving her cousin Rhys's life. Vaughn, Rhys's half-brother, is supposed to escort her home. Their journey takes on another layer when he is charged with bringing along Pascale for Mana's people to watch over. The young woman has been sentenced to indentured servitude for her actions in the last book. But a neighboring clan wants Pascale dead for killing their heir. The threat from that clan makes the long trip, through icy terrain, even more dangerous.

Along the way, Mana --who can communicate with the dead-- comes in contact with Vauhn's father. He has his own agenda. The story follows Mana and Vaughn's journey, first to her home... then to his. The two have been attracted to one another for years, but the more time they spend together, the stronger their feelings become. Mana fears giving in to her desires, since her people believe in soul mates and she never dreams Vaughn could be hers. So their feelings are forbidden, which of course makes them even more delicious.

Vaughn is very tough --and the heir to his people's throne. But there is great vulnerability in him. He's never felt first in anyone's heart. And Mana, well, she is innocent in the ways of love, but she is powerful and driven to do the right thing --even if means facing the deadly plague threatening Vaughn's people.

There's a lot happening in the story --too much to try to map out here-- but it flowed together very well. I felt so immersed in the world, the story, and the romance, that I did not want to put it down. Simply put, I am a big fan of these books. If you enjoy fantasy at all, I definitely recommend you give them a try.

Not nearly as good as the first. This one lagged a lot, although I did not skim.

I really liked the heorine and even though the hero was heavily implied as being a former rake, he was in the end lovable.

I felt a bit gypted in the end. We never see the wedding, and we are left with many unanswered questions.

I am not sure if I will continue the series. If I do it may be at a later time.

The writing overall is pretty good and the story was interesting. I do however feel there was a bit more angst in this one with regards to the romance which I didn't care for.

Safety issues:

No OW
No straying or cheating
Hero is implied as being a former rake, no details given
There is violence but only a shade above mild
No rape
No insta love
1 loving scene detailed and not overly long. Happens at very end.

Quick & Dirty: A plague is sweeping the land, a girl who walks with the dead, and man who is determined to protect her at all costs.

Opening Sentence: “Spirits dwelled down there in the fathomless corridors, and their silent pain called to me.”

Excerpt: Yes

The Review:

Mana is a spirit walker, and she traveled to another clans’ land in order to heal her cousin Rhys. Soon she realizes that her childhood friend and longtime crush Vaughn will be accompanying her on the return trip to her clan where they have granted sanctuary to Lourdes’ sister. Shortly after their trip begins they are attacked by the clan that is determined to kill Lourdes’ sister and ransom the rest of them.

While captive Mana is visited in a dream by the dead father of Vaughn and she realizes that he is the spirit that she tried to help pass over, but to her shock he is possessing the body of a canus and he warns her that the plague has spread to Vaughn’s clan and he needs to return home before his mother passes. With help from the pack of canus and Vaughn’s clever tricks, they escape and make their way to her clan.

They relay the same warning to Vaughn about his clan, and Old Father counsel’s Mana to see with her heart and make the journey with him. So despite the misgivings of her Maven she sets out with Vaughn and they arrive in the nick of time. When Mana saves Vaughn’s mother she almost dies as well, and when she awakes she is angry that he has tied their life forces together during his attempt to save her life. Now they are in a race against time to save the remaining clanswomen and can Mana realize what is in front of her?

I liked the first book and you are introduced to these characters in that book, just like you meet at least one of the main characters for the next one in this book. However, I loved this book. I mean I could not put this down, I was sucked in and found myself just shocked and amazed at how much I liked this world and the characters. It’s bold, they all have fangs but they aren’t shifters or vampires, and one clan are cannibals, no really and what’s worse you can’t help but like them!

I hope I at least catch glimpses of Mana and Vaughn in the other books, but I have to have more of this world. Fantasy and romance at their absolute best!

Notable Scene:

“Since spirit walkers saw auras, we often foretold soul matches among our clansmen, though the gods gave us blind spots where are own souls were concerned, denying us the possibility of matching ourselves. Walkers, on occasion, were blind to their families’ or their loved ones’ fate. While it puzzled me that I saw Rhys’ aura, yet not Vaughn’s, I learned long ago that it was not my place to question the gods or the wisdom they granted me.”

FTC Advisory: Samhain provided me with a copy of A Feast of Souls. No goody bags, sponsorships, “material connections,” or bribes were exchanged for my review.

Unfortunately, I forgot to review this as soon as I read it, so I can’t remember particulars. I do remember I really enjoyed both Mana and Vaughn’s characters, though. Vaughn was such an enigma in the first book, and Mana was his perfect foil.

Ah! Ok, it was predetermined that I would like this book. As the second book in this series it lived up to my expectations and then some. Sometimes it's hard to adjust to new main characters in a series when you've gotten attached the ones from previous books, but this book has no problems there.

Book 1, A Hint of Frost, centers around Rhys and Lourdes. A Feast of Souls focuses on Rhys's brother Vaughn *gazes off dreamily* I can't say how excited I was that Vaughn was the 'hero' in this book. Even though he wasn't in the first book a whole lot, he stood out as an interesting and complex character. He doesn't disappoint at all. He has to be tough and violent at times, but I love that his one soft spot, his achilles heel, is Mana. Gah! I loved them in this book so much!

One thing I have to say I admire about Mana is that unlike a lot of female characters in romance novels she is really honest with herself about her feelings for Vaughn. She has the inner turmoil of being attracted to him but thinking he's not right for her, without pushing him away. That drives me crazy in books when the girl will be over the top against being with this or that person. Mana can't keep Vaughn at a distance no matter what her head tells her because she is in tune to what her heart is saying.

I think I probably mentioned this in my review of the first book of this series, but I was so impressed by this fact again in Book 2. Hailey Edwards has this amazing gift of writing Romance that is gripping, tension-filled and *way* sexy . . . without being smutty. Plus, the Fantasy element of the novel doesn't take a backseat to all the steamy stuff. The story is an integral part of the characters and their relationships.

If you haven't read anything of Hailey's, you are missing out. She is an amazing author and has a true gift for this genre. An author to keep your eyes on, for sure!

Another brilliant read in this series!!

Much like the first book, we have a likeable heroine, a sexy, SEXY man with layers to him you want to peel back - just me? - and an interesting, creative world to explore. I really enjoyed getting to know both of the characters we were introduced to in book one, and the secondary characters were well developed and great in their own right. Some fantastic moments of humour and moments that have you pining for your own Vaughn, and you have a brilliant book.

Onto the third...

I loved this book. So, so much. For me, it was one of those situations when I look at the clock and it's about 10 pm and I say to myself "Okay, I'll read a few chapters. No more than 4". And then read and read and when I look at the clock again I have one of those "oh, crap" moments because it's about 3 am and I have to wake up in about 4 hours and, surprise, I'm way past the first half of the book. Though it might not sound like it, I really love it when a book does that to me, 'cause then it means it's that good :D

I liked Vaughn a lot. I have no idea what is it about arrogant, strong heroes, but I just love them. Vaughn is such a strong character. Strong enough that even the mention of his name commands attention. He's had a rough past and at times I just felt the need to get inside the book and give him a hug. A big bear hug. I liked his strength and his dedication towards doing what was right. I also liked how he believed and respected what Mana was doing, her ability to talk with the dead. I think it made him even more perfect for Mana, the fact that he respected it and that he didn't try to make it sound like some hallucination or something like that.

Mana is one cool heroine. Just the fact that she can spirit walk makes her cool. And she's good for Vaughn. She made him a better person and I felt like for the first time Vaughn was trying to be better for someone. I really liked those two together. And I liked their flirting and teasing.

As with A Hint of Frost, I liked the fact that there isn't an abundance of descriptions, because I could use my own imagination to create some of the aspects of the world. I also liked that there's a little mystery surrounding the plague and where it comes from. I'm very curious to see what happens next and about the various new creatures there are in this world. I'm ready for book 3.

So if you haven't yet read the first book of the series, A Hint Of Frost, start now. You won't be disappointed!

I loved book one of this series, so I was really excited to delve into the sequel. I have to admit, I feel let down. I liked some of the banter between Vaughn and Mana, and even many of the other characters seen periodically. I liked the canis angle and thought it was fun, even though we’re never made to be fans of Vaughn’s father from stories of him both in this book and the last. I liked Mana’s spirit walking. The plague comes into play again from the first book, and yay for closure on that. Ultimately though, it doesn’t overshadow the flaws.

This definitely doesn’t work as a standalone. There are many story arcs that stem from the previous book so if you haven’t read it before diving in, you’re going to be pretty lost. Speaking of story arcs, there were quite a few, and because they didn’t all mesh, it made for some confusion as the reader tries to figure out which conflict is the one to take the most interest in. The spirit walking made for a slower pace, while I felt other times were too fast paced, such as some of the action sequences and the romance as a whole.

I LOVED Vaughn in the first book and so looked forward to reading his tale, but he didn’t seem the same. He’s still gruff and all, but he just seems a little softer, and not just because of Mana. Mana, while she’s got some brave moments that were endearing, she largely comes off as painfully naïve, and occasionally a little slow. Old Father tried to tell her something about her soul mate, and it seemed to go right over her head. Their romance seemed a little forced sometimes too, which was disappointing. Overall, A Feast of Souls has some inconsistencies and just lacks that magic that made the first book great. That being said, I was still satisfied to have learned their story, seen more of Vaughn’s home and history, and find closure on certain plot lines.

The second book in this highly accessible medium-level fantasy series. The dialogue is sharp, and the world-building is as rich as ever. Edwards expands the reader's understanding in a fully immersive, non-formulaic experience -- all without overwhelming them in a crush of excessive details.

Following a similar structure to the first book in the Araneae Nation series, A Feast Of Souls is a first-person telling entirely from the point of view of the heroine, Mana. A rare healer and spiritual mediator, she may be one of the few who can unravel the mysteries of the plague that threatens to devastate the world. While not a physically strong heroine, Mana harbors a mental strength and compassion that evenly offsets the aggressive brutality of the hero/antihero, Vaughn.

Removed from the volatile, competitive relationship with his half-brother, Vaughn comes into his own in this book. The specifics of his sordid past, and that of his notoriously cannibalistic clan, are explored with satisfying depth. The dysfunctional mother/son relationship between Vaughn and his clan Maven, Isolde, holds its own authentic pain and biting charm. And a marriage of absolute necessity is complicated by the primal attraction of soul-mates.

This story's resolution did feel slightly less . . . resolved . . . than the previous book in the series. The readers now learn more, both medically and spiritually, about the Yellow Plague that was mentioned as something of a menacing side note in “A Hint Of Frost.” But ultimately, more questions than answers were generated, forging a wide-open path into the next successive book.

Mana and Vaughn were two of my favorite characters in A Hint of Frost so I was really excited that they have their own story in A Feast of Souls!

A Feast of Souls continues the plot that was begun in A Hint of Frost, the plague is still spreading and there is still debate over what to do with Pascal. Rhys and Lourdes also make an appearance, however brief it is. Pascal also plays a significant role in the beginning and I suspect we'll see more of her as the series continues.

Vaughn and Mana make a great couple. Vaughn, as we saw in the first book is arrogant, a bit of a loner and well, sometimes a jerk. But in this book much of his past is uncovered, and while it isn't pretty, you have to feel a lot of sympathy and understanding for what he has gone through. He proves himself quite the hero in the end. The reader also learns a lot about Mana's abilities as a spirit walker. Which affects her relationship with Vaughn is several ways, both negative and positive. There is the added fact that Mana and Vaughn have known each other since they were children, it made their love story even sweeter because it was a long time coming. :)

A Feast of Souls has all of the incredible fantasy elements that were introduced in A Hint of Frost. This book delves more into the Mimetidae Clan, who were introduced before but this time we see more of the inner workings of this clan that all the others seem to fear so much.

I cannot wait to see what happens in A Cast of Shadows, Areneae Naton #2.5!

This is the fourth book I’ve read by Hailey Edwards and she can count me as a fan. I stumbled across Everlong, the first book in her Daughters of Askara series, and enjoyed the read. So when I had the opportunity to read and review A Hint of Frost, the first book in the Araneae Nation series, I jumped at the chance. It was a delicious read and I gobbled it up. Then came A Feast of Souls and I couldn’t wait to dive in and read more about this creative world and its intriguing characters. I was not disappointed.

Vaughn was one of my favorite characters from the first book so I was excited to read more about him. I found him irresistible. If I were Mana I wouldn’t have been able to keep my hands off him.

The world that Ms. Edwards created for this series is unique and wonderful. This series reminds me of an “other world” Native American story and I’ve always loved the Native American culture and their stories.

With a threat of plague, being captured by the enemy, a greedy mother, a selfish aunt and their cultural difference in their way, Mana and Vaughn’s story makes for a great romance.

I thoroughly enjoyed the book but I felt like the ending was rushed. It was like ok they are together…..the end. I hope the next installment gives us a better ending to this sweet story and I can’t wait to read it!

This series has been in my TBR for a number of years so I thought I’d give it a shot but I’m going to shelve the rest for a bit because the overall series plot involves a pandemic and... yeah, not a great time.

This story didn’t work for me. It was repetitive, hard to follow at times, and I really disliked how the heroine’s religious decision to remain chaste until fated marriage was described. She thinks of herself as virtuous for not having the sex and him as having demonstrated his virility by having had the sex. No thanks!

This picks up shortly after the marriage of Rhys and Lourdes, with Mana still in the city of Erania and ready to go home. Vaughn agrees to escort her and Pascale, who will be staying with the Salticidae, back to their city of Beltania. Vaughn is clearly very attracted and intrigued by Mana - he is one of the only people in their group who respect her spirit walker abilities and truly believe in their healing capabilities. On their way, Mana has an encounter with a Canis, who is actually Brynmor (Vaughn's father) in spirit form. He wants Mana to get Vaughn to go to his home in Cathis where the yellow death is taking hold. Along the way, Mana has quite a few reasons to journey to the spirit world for the sake of healing and Vaughn ends up tying his life thread to hers as an anchor in order to save Mana's life, but he does this without her permission. Mana and her people believe in soul mates and Mana isn't so sure that Vaughn is hers, but she very much wants him to be. Together, Vaughn and Mana must win over the Mimetidae who are still battling the yellow death and somehow cure the plague before it spreads to other settlements.

I did not enjoy this one as much as I did the first one, but this was still pretty good in its own right. This had a little more relationship angst between Mana and Vaughn, since Mana is a peaceful Salticidae, while Vaughn is a war-mongering Mimetidae and while he has no trouble accepting her, she has a bit of trouble accepting him. Their journey is less about establishing their chemistry and more about their learning to trust and accept one another. Once again, the romance remains subtly there as the characters go on their adventure, but is not the clear focus of the story...until the end after they get married. I liked the development of the story and the fact that there seems to be a series arc regarding the yellow death (and who is behind it). I also liked the characters and their depth, as they both had their share of issues that motivated their behavior towards one another. I did feel that the end seemed to lack some closure in their relationship. At one point, Vaughn claims that he wouldn't take Mana until she could accept him as who and what he was. I got the impression that she accepted him for who, but not what. She definitely loves Vaughn, but I still get the impression that she is turned off by the brutality and cannibalistic nature of him and his clan. I don't feel like there was an acceptance of that really...she kinda got to the point where she realized she had to be strong because of it, but definitely not acceptance. Also, Mana had a lot of worries and concerns about Vaughn's sexual experience before her, especially as her clan see sex outside of a soul mate union as ruining oneself for their soul mate. Vaughn spent enough time with the Salticidae to understand this, but he and Mana never address it. I seemed to want some acknowledgement that he'd wished he'd waited or that it felt like the first time for him or something to put them on equal ground in that respect. But that was just me. Their sexy times together were way too short and the book ended immediately afterwards, which was disappointing also. I will definitely be reading on however - this was a good continuation of the series.

The second installment of The Araneae Nation series by Hailey Edwards, a series I recently read and absolutely loved, is A Feast of Souls. This series started back in 2012 and was completed in 2014 (with some novellas not included in this review released up to 2017), so it's not a new one. I'd read 5 other series by Hailey Edwards (A Beginner's Guide to Necromancy, Black Hat Bureau, Black Dog, Gemini and her new series The Body Shop) before stumbling across this, so I thought I knew what to expect - good writing, good romance, decent low fantasy worldbuilding. But this blew me away.

The Araneae are a collection of clans, with a similar vibe to indigenous American and Canadian tribes, except that they are clearly related to spiders. Different clans have different anatomical, physiological and cultural adaptations - fangs and venom, spinnerets to create web, resistance to venom, differing levels of aggression, ritual cannibalism, fighting ability, hunting and scent tracking ability, craftsmanship, spiritual powers, inability to digest meat, the list goes on. It makes for a really diverse and interesting high fantasy world of different tribes. And of course, there's something not right in this fantasy world - spiders, meet plague. A plague that does more than they realise... and over the course of the series, we see this plot beautifully evolve around the individual stories of our main players.

This book follows Rhys' cousin Mana and his half-brother Vaughn. Mana is a spirit walker, and one such has charged her with a task whose source she can't reveal. Vaughn comes along to help her, but soon it will be him who desperately needs Mana's help.

Mana was a side character in book 1 who plays a very key role near the end - and it was lovely to see her pop up in book 2 and see more of her spirit walker ability, which is really fascinating seen from the other side. When the spirit of Vaughn's father approaches Mana for help, bit binds her to secrecy, she knows she has to help him - but she always had a huge crush on him growing up which makes it difficult. At least, until the real difficulties hit them, and both Vaughn's leadership, his mother's and his own life, and the lives of his clan come under threat - and Mana's spirit walking abilities are the only protection from the plague as well as the cannibalistic and mistrusting clan she founds herself locked in with.

Vaughn was such an interesting character in book 1 - snarky, a bit of a jerk, mean to Rhys but a dependable guy regardless. In this book, he became very sexy, powerful and protective. It was great seeing him from that different viewpoint. How sweet, spiritual Mana and gruff, violent Vaughn were going to match up I really wasn't sure, but Vaughn finds softness for her where she finds steel for Vaughn. It's a really lovely developing relationship and the context of their relationship to the clan too just works so well. Plus these venomous cannibal boys are just weirdly sexy - Mana, I absolutely see it girl.

The major overarching series plot also starts to really move in this book, and the sense of darkness and fear of what is happening in the Araneae world is really building now.

I really am liking this series a lot. There is a simple world built here, where there are different factions/nations each with its own unique skillset and characteristic, there is also a more complicated side to the interactions of these factions, where intricate political maneuvers are involved.

I like both protagonists here, both were introduced in the first book, and as we get to know more about them, I find them really likeable.

Our H is shown a different side from the first book, where initially we didn't even know if he's a good guy or not. In here, we finally understand why he's the way he is, and I have to marvel the fact that he turns out pretty well and is still capable of loving his family. It's pretty obvious right from the start how he feels for our h, and from what was disclosed all through the book, he really never wavered from wanting to be with her. I really like his steadfastness and unwavering devotion to her.

Our h is just as likable. She's kind, gentle and though a bit slow regarding our H, she is never mean to him intentionally. I like her quiet strength and while she might not know how to fight, she still is a strong fighter in the spiritual world.

The storyarc itself is getting to be very engaging, and I have to say while I like the romance here, which is very slow building, I am more engaged by the storyline itself. I love the mystery and also the cute supporting casts and I look forward to seeing more of them soon.

Great story

As the 2nd book in the Araneae Nation series I am happy to say that i really enjoyed this book

Mana and Vaughn had a great chemistry and I appreciated that we got to see what their life was like before. I woulf have liked to see more of a resolution between Vaughn, his mother, and his brother but maybe down the road.

Plague and history

This book is a great mix of family rivalries, hurt pride, aggression, desperation and love. The entanglement of so much family history as well as piqued interests among a plague had me hooked for this book. Seeing as the next one continues with more problems surrounding the plague I can’t wait to read it as well.

A touch more angstier and gorier than the first book.
And I'm still not a fan of 'sex as final goal' structure.
But it's an interesting world with well-written characters.
