I really, really love Ms. walker's writing style!
I love her characters, I love the action and I love the psychic aspect of this series.

But in the latest books the flow of the story is becoming too much complicated.

At the beginning of this book I had problems following the story - who was doing what, who was good and who was bad guys, whose story we were following...

After a bit, the story was more clear, but still I would have preferred if it was more linear, more clear.

I had a big problem with Gus and his stubborness. I understood that he was heavily protective with Alex, but he acted stupid ! Even after it become clear to all, even to Alex, thus putting all in more danger!!!

I admired Vaughnne and her patience with Gus and his stupid actions. She was great!

I think that there's just too much angst in Ms. Walkers characters. It would be better if she put some lightening personality trait since every one of them is too angry, hurt, suffering, traumatized... A bit of that is OK, but too much is just too much!

But, if you like a lot of angst, action and some very interesting psychic abilities, this is an excellent series! :D

The H was OTT in every way, angry, handsome and determined protecting his nephew would be his way or no way. The heroine is their sort of minder, gets caught in his hubris about he good he was. He wasn't nearly good enough. She was talented, but the young boy needed an array of people to protect him. It was a great adventure, with OTT talented people being thwarted by the not so smart baddies. I enjoyed it but the arrogance is tiring.

Vaughnne MacMeans works for a secret shadow group in the FBI. Composed almost entirely of psychics, the group uses their gifts to help bring down criminals that conventional means can’t seem to manage. When her boss, Taylor Jones, gives Vaughnne an assignment in Orlando, FL, Vaughnne is dismayed. She was part of the team who broke the slave trade ring down there in The Reunited and the job took a lot out of her both professionally and personally. Told she will be babysitting a kid with supposed psychic powers, she finds there is much more involved once she meets her assignment.

Gus has been charged with protecting his nephew, Alex. A former mercenary/spy for a foreign country, Gus intimately knows the danger Alex is in; especially if the person who want Alex gets him back. Gus’s paranoia has no boundaries and he trusts only one person-Alex. He will do anything and everything to keep Alex safe.

“There is nobody, and I mean this with every bit of strength I have in me, absolutely nobody who means as much to me as that boy. I can, and have, killed for him. I will do it again, without blinking.”

He hates that he has to use Alex as a human lie detector but the circumstances demand it. When Gus first meets Vaughnne, the attraction is unexpected and unwelcome. He has no time for romance or even a dalliance as his life is nothing but a convoluted layer up layer of lies and deception.

Vaughnne is astounded when she is hit by the raw psychic power Alex holds. Also by the intense chemistry that sparks between her and Gus. As Vaughnne struggles to keep Gus and Alex in her sights without them knowing, other agents are are becoming involved, each with their own agenda. When Alex’s location is compromised, Vaughnne has no choice but to blow her cover and do everything possible to keep Alex safe. But that is easier said than done when Gus places roadblock after roadblock in Vaughnne’s way and she is forced to finally take matters in her own hands.

The Protected is the fourth in Shiloh Walker’s intensely sensual and intriguing dark paranormal series-The FBI Psychics. The Protected picks up after book three, The Reunited. Though part of a series, it can be read as a stand alone. The Protected is a shockingly seductive paranormal thriller that hooked me from page one. Shiloh Walker has an addictive writing style that draws you into her characters’ emotional pathways and lets you feel with them what they are experiencing. Romance and taut suspense go hand in hand as we follow a gritty and dark well plotted storyline down a twisting path of deception, betrayal, and madness.

Heavily character driven, The Protected introduces us to two extremely complicated characters-Vaughnne MacMeans and Gus (Gustavo) Hernandez. Vaughnne has been on her own since she was fifteen when her father cast her out due to her manifesting gifts. Only through intense trial and tribulation did she get her life on track, which eventually leads her to Jones and her FBI position. Vaughnne is extremely loyal and independent. She has lines she won’t cross but those lines become blurred when she and Gus begin working together.

Gus went into the military and left his family behind when he was co opted into a special ops group. He has killed, lied, deceived, and betrayed all in the name of the job. He is extremely attractive and has no issues using that to achieve his mission goals. Though he has buried his conscious deep and fears he has starred too long into the abyss, becoming like the monsters he hunted, something about Vaughnne makes him begin to question the things he has done.

“There were days he swore that this was some hell that had been dropped on him because of the life he’s led. The lives he had taken, the lies he had told. “

Gus has to be one of my favorite characters to date in this series. Dark and dangerous, he embodies an anti hero feel though you know that he is one of the good guys. He has his own rules that he follows and woe to anyone whom he decides is a threat.

The chemistry between Vaughnne and Gus is an aching pulse that beats beneath the storyline. Intense sexual tension keeps us and them on the edge as they struggle to stay professional and on top of their mission. The romance is hot and bittersweet, slowing revealing in a way that elevates and enhances the main plot without overshadowing. Their physical scenes are tasteful, satisfying, and extremely steamy. Gus is definitely an alpha and Vaughnne is more than able to hold her own when he unleashes his full repertoire on her.

“ It was though. A taking. A marking. A claiming.”

She sees behind the mask he has cultivated and that both intrigues and scares Gus. It was very easy to get caught up in the emotional turmoil of these two star crossed lovers as try to find their second chance.

The secondary characters are bold, viable additions to the story as they add layers to the suspense and mystery. Each one is a piece in the puzzle; they make up a solid foundation for our storyline to build upon. We see old familiar faces that are a welcome addition to the story. Taylor Jones is ever present, only offering information on a need to know basis. It’s nice to see a personal side of him since our first meeting in The Missing (Book one). Taige and her daughter make an appearance and I still adore seeing Taige’s protective instincts in action, especially when children are involved. We also get some clues to Taige’s daughter’s eventual role in the arc. Tucker and Nalini, seen in The Reunited, play much bigger roles in here I enjoyed seeing the foreshadowing of their future interactions. Tucker has such an amazing gift and I like that Walker gives us more hints into his background. I am looking forward to his book.

As with any good thriller, there are multiple sub plots running through the main storyline and each one is a key to the final outcome. Ms. Walker does a fabulous job of maintaining these separate entities without overburdening us with unnecessary information or complicated scenarios. When it all comes together in the end, we are treated to an astounding finale that ties it all together, solid and tight, with no questions left unanswered. Though we are informed of the villain early one, the journey into their reasons for wanting Alex and the catalyst that pushes Gus and Alex to run and hide was thrilling and packed with surprises.

The Protected is an action junkie’s thrill ride that hits all the high notes. I recommend this series as a must read for those who love their paranormal romances to be wrapped in dark emotional suspense and intrigue. I cannot wait to see where Walker takes us next.

This is the fourth book in the Psychic FBI series, but it can easily be read as a standalone novel. A few references to other characters in past books confused me, but since each novel follows a different agent, Vaugnne MacMeans story picked up at the start and I was able to keep up easily.

I loved the premise of this novel, both the paranormal aspect and just the nuts and bolts of trying to protect someone. The dynamics between Gus trying to protect the kid and Vaugnne trying to force him to let her help created some interesting tension. At points I wanted to smack Gus in frustration because he was being so stubborn, but then again, that was the point. If he hadn’t been so paranoid and secluded before, he wouldn’t still be alive. I loved watching these two go back and forth on the issue, trying to work out how to trust each other. Not an easy task when they both kept pulling guns on the other.

I also loved the premise for the series in general. The variety and creativity of the powers all the characters have got me downright giddy, and I loved watching them work together.

The action and pacing were pretty solid, and they had me burning through the pages much faster than I normally read. The writing…had a tendency to be overly poetic at points. Not consistently -- usually the writing was fairly smooth -- but at random a few phrases would feel like they belong in a teenagers poetry book, and the inconsistency made them stand out more.

I think my biggest complaint with the novel was the romance. There was plenty of hot, lusty action going on, including looooooooooong drawn out descriptions of how incredibly attractive everyone is and how much everyone’s nether regions are getting tingly. On the one hand, I kind of expect that from this genre. Everyone is immediately and uncontrollably lustful, bring it on. On the other hand, this is a book about people with a random grab-bag of powers. In that kind of a setting, all the burning and throbbing going on at the drop of hat made it seem like some lust-creating psychic was just playing an April Fool’s Prank on everyone. Given Gus’s history and his claims of being able to sexually exploit literally anyone, I spent most of the book thinking that would be his undiscovered power at the end. Alas, it was not. He’s just that hot, I guess.

“The Protected” by Shiloh Walker is part of the enthralling ‘FBI Psychics’ series and features people with extraordinary mental abilities. Vaughnne MacMeans appeared in a previous story in this series and has had very traumatic experiences that she is trying to recuperate from. She reluctantly accepts an assignment to ‘babysit’ a pair of individuals who aren’t to know about her task but she is shocked to realize that her mental skills will be sorely tested by an ostensibly simple duty. Gus Hernandez and his young relative are shockingly tense and exhausted but their wary tolerance of their new neighbor is overridden by the danger that she seems to represent. Vaughnne’s reluctant attraction to both of them is tempered by her assessment that they represent just as much danger to her. The question becomes whether their alliance will be more harm than help and whether they will all survive to work out their relationship.

I am a big fan of stories that feature those with extraordinary mental capabilities so this is a series that appeals to me immensely. Combine that with Shiloh Walker’s ability to create remarkably intense and unique characters who are extremely memorable and I am an extremely happy reader. I love the way there are cameos by some of the intriguing people from previous tales and I definitely hope there will be additional books that feature some of the secondary players in this story. Gus’ young charge is a fascinating combination of powerhouse and impressionable kid who is being honed by all of the stresses he is under and one wonders whether he will shatter from the pressure or get polished into an invaluable diamond. The amazing powers that are described encompass quite a range of abilities and the enigmatic Mr. Taylor Jones continues to manipulate the resources at his command and frustrate his agents, whetting one’s appetite for more hints about his background. I always look forward to more works from this talented author and this book is a wonderful example of her ability to create a vivid and enthralling story and I can only hope that the series continues to grow.

Agent Vaughnne MacMeans has two options when her boss, Mr. Taylor Jones, approach her with a new assignment. Go babysit some kid or resign. Of course, her boss didn’t say those words but she knows what she has to do. The simple task becomes complicated when she finds herself attracted to the boy’s Guardian.

Gus is not sure why the new neighbor sets her sights onto Alex but his job is to make sure that no one knows about Alex’s gift. His past and his enemies might catch up to him if they know what Alex could do. When the danger arrives, Gus has no choice but to trust Vaughnne to help him out of a tough situation.

Shiloh Walker has rarely disappointed me. I’m glad she got another winner under her belt. The characters are unique and complex. I like the extra psychic/paranormal element to this romantic suspense. The one thing that did threw me was that instant change of POV. The constant switch sometimes threw me out of the story.

I like Vaughnne. She is fierce and brave. She is strong and kick ass. She is passionate about her career and those she loves. I liked Gus just as much as I like Vaughnne. He is head strong, mysterious and sexy. The chemistry between them as they fight off enemies is awesome. I wish there were more intimate scenes with Gus and Vaughnne but I definitely felt the vibes from them.

Of course I loved the main characters but I’m very intrigued by Mr. Jones. I want to know more of his background. He’s aloof and direct. He is so hard to read and that makes me more curious. There’s potential for more books and I hope to get a better insight into Mr. Jones.

This series is intense, suspenseful and action-packed. I love each book better than the first. I look forward to any upcoming additions to the series.

I really liked the romance in this book, but I felt that Alex stole the book. I loved how everyone was so taken with him, with his powers, and wanted to protect and teach him a way to deal with those powers. I felt for Gus for the life that he and Alex had to live while on the run. I was glad that Vaughnne was sent to watch over them. I hated how wary both Gus and Alex were at the small kindnesses Vaughnne tried to bestow on them. The part with the cookies just killed me.

I was glad when Vaughnne's cover was blown, allowing everything to come out in the open. I know that Gus had issues trusting, but it was the safest place for Alex. While the only way to make sure that Alex was 100% safe was a brutal choice it was the only one to make, I just wish that Gus didn't have to be the one to do it.

I was really annoyed by Gus's choice at the end, hated that he felt it had to be that way. It was a good thing that he quickly came to his senses.

With all that was going on with Vaughnne, Gus, and Alex, I found myself intrigued by some others, mainly Tucker and Nalini. I hope that we see more of them soon!

This is my first Shiloh Walker novel and I was completely blown away! The Protected is the fourth book in the FBI Psychics series but it can be read as a standalone.

I love suspense reads and that’s what made my decision to pick up this book. I absolutely loved how Shiloh started off with all these different side stories that were carefully woven together to create such an interesting climax.

The plot was well thought out with a few surprises here and there. I also loved the complexity of the characters and found them easily relatable. I loved watching Gus’s struggles to trust anyone and I totally admire his devotion to keep the boy protected no matter what. Not to mention his lady-killer looks and deliciously muscular physique.

The only issue I had with the book was that I didn’t get to see many interactions with the boy. It’s understandable because he was scared the whole time while running for his life. I would love to watch his character develop in future books.

In Shiloh Walker's The Protected, the 4th installment in the FBI Psychics romantic suspense series, this would blow your mind and take you out of this world. For FBI Agent Vaughnne McMeans, she was no ordinary agent on special assignment. She was placed in charge of Alex and Gus from bad people. Little did she know, that Alex's father went after them to bring them back home to Mexico. But she didn't expect to fall into a trap by someone close to her on her team and fall in love with Gustavo, either. The chemistry between them was explosive and smoldering hot, the same temperature raised the danger level. The closer they get together, they both had dark secrets to reveal about the past. And in the end, they fought the evil that lurked after them and came together with a new fresh start for them.

Plot: 3 The plot and ending are predictable.
Sex: 3 Sex scenes not as intense as some of Ms Walkers other books. These were tame and quick.
Overall Enjoyment: 3 I believe the books could have ended 20 or so pages earlier. It dragged on a lot longer than needed.

I always enjoy the exploits of the psychics attached to the FBI unit because they are not simply suits. These agents have backgrounds and stories that are in some instances heartbreaking but that only makes them more interesting to read about. The characters whether good guys or bad guys are going to be nothing short f great because you are going to get someone who is either going to make you like them or creep you out and make you dislike them, both very good things while reading.

Agent Vaughnne MacMeans would do anything to avoid going back to Orlando after the last assignment in that city. Her new assignment, keeping an eye on a psychic kid who may or may not be in danger forces her right back to the city where her sister was murdered. As an added bonus she finds herself attracted to the kids guardian in a big way.

Gus does not understand Alex's gift but he knows that some people would kill to have it. And he is prepared to do whatever it takes to keep the boy safe from anything. His first inclination is to run when the beautiful woman moves into the house across the street from his, but figures getting to know her first might not hurt. When danger does show Vaughnne may be the only person standing between them and death.

Things start a little slowly but picks up swiftly and things start happening that keep you wondering. There are a number of people who come into play some known and some new. The tension builds perfectly and keeps you waiting for the next event. There is also a romance that develops which you want to see grow and hopefully work. I would definitely recommend this!

My first book by Shiloh Walker. I didn’t dislike it but I didn’t really like it much either. In part, paranormal romance isn’t my cup of tea. Romantic suspense is my main jam, but the paranormal stuff throws me off. However, I think that would’ve mattered less if I connected to the story/characters more. I also felt like the love story between Gus & Vaughnne went from not in love & hesitant for about 95% of the book, to suddenly in love and ready to commit. I don’t know, the whole process there felt forced.

FBI agent Vaughnne MacMeans has a special ability - she can communicate with others without actually speaking. While her “talent” is fairly minor compared with many of the others on the team headed by Agent Taylor Jones, she has developed her instincts and honed her skills, making her a deadly agent. She is put to the test in her latest assignment: protecting 12-year-old Alex, whose psychic abilities have made him the target of an extremely dangerous man. Going undercover, Vaughnne moves next door to Alex and his “dad,” Gus.

Gus Hernandez has one mission in life, to keep Alex safe from those that hunt him. At the dying request of Alex’s mother, Gus has done everything to protect Alex for over four years, including constantly moving, killing and even using Alex’s abilities. Although he is attracted to new neighbor Vaughnne, he will not act on his desire, nor will he allow her to become a distraction in their lives - even if it means he has to eliminate her.

In general, I enjoyed The Protected from start to finish. The overall story involving a suspenseful race to protect Alex is exciting and well-written. Reyes, the primary bad guy is portrayed as an evil man - someone a reader loves to hate. I would have enjoyed a few more scenes developing his nasty persona, providing me more reason to cheer for his demise. Instead, Alex is hunted by henchmen and goons-for-hire, giving the reader an array of chase scenes, killings, and mayhem, some of which feature others with psychic talents.

The story is thrilling - but not so tense that I was unable to breathe. Keeping Alex safe became increasingly harder as the book progressed and the stakes grew higher. At times, the number of "bad guys" one-after-another felt over done, but it kept an accelerated tempo in the story. I also liked how the entire situation was resolved - it was done in such a way that made "things" okay.

One part that gave me pause was the inclusion of FBI freelance psychic Nalini. It wasn’t her part in the story - that was pretty interesting and entertaining, but rather that many of the sections told from her POV were overly vague and too loose, which made them difficult to follow. I also felt she had a bit of a split personality - I was confused as to who she wanted to do what and why she didn’t contact others. Although there was a reason for everything, which was revealed in the end, it broke the tempo of the story too much at times.

In addition, I was annoyed by the lack of trust and cooperation by the different people trying to look out for Alex. Nalini, who sometimes works as an FBI agent, pulls in friend Tucker, but neither are working for the FBI. Vaughnne is working under orders from Taylor/FBI. Gus is doing whatever he needs to protect his family. And throughout the story, these people who should be looking out for Alex’s best interest are completely working against one another. It really frustrated and even confused me at times.

Beyond the main storyline is the romance between Vaughnne and Gus. Each experience an intense and immediate attraction for the other. Although both are extremely deadly, and they are basically lying to one another, they experience a pull, something neither has felt for anyone in a very long time. Add to it the steamy locale of Orlando, FL, which pumped up the heat factor and left me practically begging for these two to get together!

I like Vaughnne a lot. She is confident and strong, yet vulnerable and able to love. She is also very careful not to cross any lines from which she couldn't return. It is refreshing that she holds her job with importance, and it’s not just used as a mechanism to do whatever she wants. She has integrity that gives her character both a shine and grit.

On the other hand, Gus is not a good man; he says so several times. And he's not really a "bad boy" either. He's someone that does what he needs to. And for the past four years, his only job was protecting Alex at any cost. To me, this went too far when he used Alex to read people and wouldn't let Vaughnne help at all - in fact he worked against and hurt her. It made it harder for me to connect with and like his character. If it wasn't for Vaughnne's feelings towards Gus and seeing him through her eyes, I don't know if I would have liked him. But that's who he is supposed to be - so the author did a great job in creating Gus.

The final parts of the story had some of the most touching scenes as Gus must decide what to do with his life. Vaughnne tugged at my heartstrings as she all but accepted her fate with a heavy heart. The Protected had a very good ending and enjoyable story all around.

In conclusion, The Protected is an entertaining, suspenseful story with a side of steamy romance. I enjoyed the action and flow of the overall story centering on the protection of Alex. I felt the romance was tender, even though I was a little mad that it took so long for Gus to trust anyone, especially Vaughnne. And the fact that there was no communication between Nalini-Tucker-Vaughnne-Taylor made for some frustrating reading. But I loved the way the story concluded, and in the end, I fell for Gus and Vaughnne.

I loved it, and as always I'm sad when I come to the end of a Shiloh Walker book. This is one in a series but you don't have to read them in order. Other characters in the series make an appearance but you don't need thier stories to follow along with this one. Honestly, my only problem was the villain didn't suffer enough to suit me.

Yes, I say it every time – I love this series. Shiloh Walker gets better and better with every book. She keeps me riveted to the page, my heart pounding with fear and then desire, my emotions churning every which way. These characters are working toward the same goal, but trust is a huge pivotal point that is long in coming.

Vaughnne MacMeans is a bit upset with her boss, Taylor Jones, who is the leader of the FBI psychic unit she works with. Just coming off a dangerous and emotional mission, she needs more time before heading into another. Boss man has assured her that this new one is only a babysitting job. He’s learned of a young boy whose abilities have placed him in danger and she just needs to keep an eye on him and his father while Jones arranges things on his end. Going back to Orlando is the last thing she wants to do, but somehow that’s where she ends up.

Having been on the run four years, Gus Hernandez is tired. But keeping Alex safe is the promise he made and that’s what he’ll do until his last breath. The boy’s abilities have helped out, letting Gus know when “they” are close again, allowing him time to get them on the road, running once more. Their new neighbor is intriguing, but the best thing is to stay as far away from her as possible. He doesn’t trust anyone. At all. That was lost when he couldn’t save his sister from a monster he’d love to get his hands on.

As I’ve mentioned before, the psychic power of the characters in this series is as much a star in the stories as the characters themselves. The range of abilities is as varied as it is amazing. Vaughnne’s gift is telepathic. From disabling the bad guy to calling for help, her gift is one Gus and Alex need, along with trust, but Gus is having none of it. Alex’s ability is off the charts, but he’s untrained to the point of losing control at the wrong time. When her cover is blown, Vaughnne tries to get Gus to see how taking Alex to Taylor Jones is the best thing for him. Gus runs. I have to say, Vaughnne has more patience with this hero than I’d ever have. As much as I like him, he needs a swift kick in the butt.

Now, to be fair, however, Gus has the training to keep Alex safe, and he’s done a credible job of it so far. But there are extraneous factors working against him, bringing danger to their door as soon as the last is vanquished. He learns this the hard way when he finally gives Vaughnne the slip and he’s now fighting alone against powers he doesn’t fully understand, no matter what Vaughnne has tried to explain and what he’s seen. I wanted to shake him a few times at the stunts he pulls, but it’s love in so many forms that is pushing him, and you can’t blame him one bit. When he finally decides to trust Vaughnne, especially when she puts herself and her career on the line for him and Alex, it’s great to see him in full warrior mode.

We get to see other agents who we’ve read about in the series so far, and it’s nice to catch up and see them in action again. I love the way Taige puts Gus in his place; terrific scenes. Nalini and Tucker are very interesting characters and I hope they do get their own book(s). No idea if they’re slated to be together, but it sure seems that way after this story. Their abilities are different and powerful, and it will be doubly interesting to see what Ms. Walker does with them later. I do hope we get to see more of Alex in future books. He’s obviously going to be molded into the perfect agent for Taylor Jones, or so it seems to me. At least I hope so, because while we don’t get a huge amount of interaction with him in this book, what we do get gives endless possibilities.

This is one of those books you read way too fast and then have forever to wait for the next one. But it’s worth it, especially because the next one is better than the last, which creates more anticipation for the future. Sounds like a huge, never-ending cycle, but I’m more than happy to be caught up in it with these characters who give their all for justice, love, and each other.

This is such a great series and I love this addition. The Protected is full of action, danger and romance as everyone involve work to do everything they can to protect a young boy with powers that he can't control but others want to.

Vaughnne MacMeans has recently returned to work after taking three months personal leave. The case she worked on in Florida went to hell, a slave ring operation they broke but she could not save the one person she needed to help. Her boss Taylor Jones, Special Agent in charge to the FBI Psychics, a covert government entity wants Vaughnne to go back to Orlando to monitor another case, a kid who has a gift and someone is after him.

Gus Hernandez is a handyman around the area, he lives with Alex a 12 years old who he calls his son. Alex's life has been uprooted for several years and he is an angry young boy but Gus is Alex's protector and he will do anything to keep him safe, including moving anytime someone gets too close or they are in danger. Gus knows that Reyes wants to find the boy and even though Alex is Reyes' son, he only wants him for the power that Alex has.

Tucker and Nalini find out someone is looking for Alex, neither work for the FBI but they are aware of the group, they both have powers of their own. Tucker goes there to see Vaughnne and they talk about what to do, when things are taken out of their hands when men come to Gus' place causing them all to flee, Vaughnne, Gus and Alex are on the run, heading to Washington DC for help.

They decide the only way Alex will ever be safe is if his father is dead, so leaving Alex with Taylor, Gus and Vaughnne take off for Mexico. There is much distrust between the two and they try to work together but Gus as been running for so long that he only trusts himself. And although they are attracted to each other, they struggles with how to handle their feelings while danger surrounds them.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book, it is non-stop action from beginning to end with so much angst and emotion. I really like Vaughnne, a strong woman with her own troubles who is still reeling from the last case. I like that she really enjoys working for the FBI, she is loyal to the team and her boss. I also like Gus, he is a tortured soul that has one goal in life, protect Alex. He does not trust anyone even when emotionally he is drawn to Vaughnne.

The secondary characters are all well done, I like Taylor and the team, Alex tugs at your heartstrings as a young boy who has seen a lot of horrors and is dealing with his own powers. Tucker and Nalini play large parts in the story but it is frustrating how they hang just outside the world of the FBI and the communication between them sucks. They all do things separately and it is amazing that things work out. But work out it does. The end is so touching as Gus must make some decisions in his life and learn to live with what he has done in the past. I am so excited to see what happens next in this series. The Protected can be read as stand alone, however they are all such good books that I recommend reading them all.

The Protected is the second book I have read by Shiloh Walker. I have to admit I was completely hooked after I read the first book I read, but WOW, this book was just as good as The Reunited. Ms. Walker is an extremely talented author with amazing skills at creating very unique and creative characters.

Vaughnne MacMeans has been assigned the task of watching over a gifted child, Alex. Alex is in great danger, he has not had an easy childhood and has experienced tremendous loss. Gus has been protecting Alex and will do whatever it takes to keep him safe. These two have led a very dramatic life and are in need of help, even if they don't know it. There is a lot of mystery that unfolds as the story goes on. I'm not going to go into too many details but wow Alex has been through so much and he is such a special young man.

Vaughnne and Gus form a strong connection instantly. Gus doesn't know if he can trust Vaughnne but it doesn't take him long to find out that he really should trust her. Gus has taken care of Alex for so long on his own, he doesn't trust anyone but himself with Alex's safety.

Vaughnne has been through a lot as well. When she joins forces with Gus there is nothing that can stand in their way of protecting Alex and making sure he stays safe. I really enjoyed Gus and Vaughnne's story. Not only are the sparks between these two completely intense, they both have some mystery to their past, that adds a little more intrigue to their story.

The Protected is full of drama, intrigue, mystery, and some pretty steamy scenes. I loved the abilities of everyone on this very intriguing FBI Psychics team. Ms. Walker has created a very interesting bunch of characters that I can't wait to read more about. My favorite thing about series books is that I get to catch up with characters I have read about before. There were several characters in this story that I had met in The Reunited. I do have to say you do not have to have read the whole series to enjoy each book on it's own. I have only read these two books and I had no problem following along. Now that I have been introduced to this talented author's work, I know I will certainly be on the look out for more.

I had previously read 2 of the series that Shiloh was writing about in this book, and since reading it, have read another. I received an arc in return for an unbiased review.

I really like Shiloh's writing style. Coming from a background of romance with years of detective, mystery and espionage on top of that, the romantic suspense genre is a perfect fit for me. Unfortunately, some of the writers can't make the two mesh. Shiloh Walker is a writer who can. Coming from previous works of hers, I knew that the writing style would be excellent, and I was correct. I was a little confused as it had been a while since I'd read the previous stories, so FYI: it might help to read the ones beforehand as this is not-quite a stand-alone read if you want to get the full effect.

Taylor Jones runs a secret group of government "spies" who all have special gifts. Most of them are called to use their talent for the greater good not only because they are in this group, but because they feel like they need to. Case in point: Vaughnne in this story. She was ostracized from her family because of her abilities and was forced to use them to survive. Unfortunately, when the story picks up she's back in Orlando after having been there recently to solve a case that involved the murder of her sister. She's babysitting another 'gifted' child who's in danger of getting taken by the wrong people. She is incredibly attracted to his caretaker/uncle, Alex, who doesn't trust her or anyone.

These two have incredible chemistry and both are incredibly stubborn! Oy! It makes you crazy sometimes how much they fight and don't believe in each other. However, there are good reasons on both sides, and when they do finally get it together, the action is great.

I enjoy this series and look forward to the next book in the story involving Tucker and the lady he's interested in. My only hesitation in this series is that you really need to read them in order. I read the book about the situation with Vaughnne and her sister AFTER reading this, and I feel like I would have enjoyed 'The Protected' more if I'd read the series in order. Otherwise, great job!

Psychic abilities, danger around every corner, some sexy times...yeah, I enjoyed this one. The Protected was an exciting race to save a young boy from the clutches of evil that kept me on the edge of my seat as Vaughnne and Gus wind up working together to save him from the group set on exploiting his incredible talents.

Paranormal...anything is always a favorite of mine and the focus on psychic skills/phenomenon in this one really worked for me--telepathy, fire starting, telekinesis, screaming banshees, etc. It was interesting, a little different and kept me curious about the different characters on both sides of the equation and what they could do.

I really liked the characters. Vaughnne and Gus are both head strong and determined as hell once they set their minds to something-- like protecting his nephew Alex. They're fierce and courageous and wiling to bend the law or flat out disregard it if they think that's what's right. And they're really perfect for each other. There were some great secondary characters as well that really caught my attention and were sexy as hell in a bad boy kind of way.

All in all I enjoyed this glimpse into the series. The romance wasn't as hot and heavy as I tend to prefer and I had a little trouble now and again with point of view shifts but really it was a satisfying read. I loved the danger and seeing how Gus and Vaughnne's relationship progressed despite his fear of letting anyone close. If you like paranormal books with a psychic bent this might be one to give a try though after talking with others in my book club I'd suggest starting at the beginning of the series. And I'm off to do just that!

I've been fascinated with the concept of this series for a while now.  Psychic paranormal romance, people with mental powers....right up my alley.  Some books in this series, I admit, I like more than others.  But THE PROTECTED nailed everything I love about this genre!

This book had intrigue, action, betrayal, sensual tension.  Did I mention the cool superpowers?  And a kid.  I love kids in stories!  They bring the whole thing together!!!

Gus has been protecting his nephew, Alex, for years.  His sister left him in charge of caring for her son, who happens to be the child of a bad man.  And the reason he's protecting him is because Alex is beyond powerful and his father wants him.  He's been on the run for a while, changing towns, changing names, being careful.

Until he starts liking the neighbor across the street.  Little does he know that Vaughnne is there on assignment to protect the kid.

Again, this story was just perfect!  Action packed, with a story that kept me intrigued and interested.  Pulse pounding sexual chemistry between Gus and Vaughnne.  I couldn't have asked for more from Ms. Walker.  I hope to see much more from this series in the future!
