A nábob, Kárpáthy János, aki a régi magyar nemesség tipikus képviselője, egy durva, kegyetlen, névnapi tréfa hatására megpróbálja levetkőzni régi önmagát, a társadalomra haszontalan, féktelen kicsapongásokba menekülő énjét.

Mór Jókai, born Móric Jókay de Ásva, outside Hungary also known as Maurus Jokai or Moriz Jokai, was a Hungarian dramatist and novelist. He was born in Komárom, the Kingdom of Hungary (today Komárno, Slovakia, southern part remains in Hungary).

It took a long time to finish this book. I would pick it up when I was in between my favorite mysteries. It is a Google book, scanned in from the 1899 edition from University of Virginia Library. Between the translation from the original Hungarian and the archaic language and manners it took some getting used to.
It is very much a 19th century novel with classic elements of romance, tragedy, deceit, humor, and of course pistols at dawn. And when I picked it back up about halfway through had to stay up late to finish it.
I cared about the characters and enjoyed the glimpse of life in the Hungary of the time.

Really wonderful! At turns both humorous and tragic, this is a charming, well-written portrait of life in 19th century aristocratic Hungary. The chapter which relates the folks custom of selecting the annual Whitsun King is especially captivating.

Apró ötletek modern mozaikja

Újraolvasás vége. Nagyon régen érett már. 2023 utolsó befejezett olvasmányának szántam.

Furcsa, hogyan öregedett ez a regény. Mint szerelmi történetnek, nagy része inkább ijesztő, mint jóleső. Mint irányregénynek, már nem működik az optimizmusa, bár a reformkort ismerve érthető. Mint epizódokból összeálló mozaik, annyira modern, hogy a fal adja a másikat, és olyan írói ötletekkel van teleszórva, amilyenekért más a fél karját odaadná. Érdekes, hogy a saját korában pont ezt a mozaikszerűségét kritizálták. Ja, és amúgy vicces. Nagyon.

Eleinte elég darabos, szinte töredékes, de érdemes türelemmel lenni, mert azután szépen bekattan a helyére minden elem, minden szereplő. Igazi szép, nagy ívű történet. Van benne némi cukormáz, de csak módjával, még éppen emészthető mennyiségben. Nagyon szerettem.

The mosaic nature of the book, as the novel progresses, comes together into a whole that is modern and brilliant. It is humorous, thought-provoking, exciting, and asks the question of what it truly means to be hungarian in the antechamber of the reformation era. To go or to stay, current at the moment.

my favorite novel from my favorite author ever. he captures something incredibly fragile, beautiful and sad about loyalty and love - toward individuals and one's nation alike.
he's undoubtedly a master of his craft. not just a magnificent storyteller but someone with an excellent skill to paint realistic pictures about times long past.
for me, he's the one who makes the hungarian language infinitely more beautiful (and isn't there some terrible irony in that, seeing this review is in english) and one of the few who makes me proud to be born in this small country.
i write these lines with growing melancholy and a kind of hopelessness. he would be heartbroken to be alive in his beloved country today.

A Hungarian Nabob was originally published in the late 1800s, and has the slow pace and frequent musings of its characters as a result. The main characters are interesting, though a bit predictable, and there are some witty moments. Overall, a nice read if you are interested in literature of that era, or Hungarian life in that era.

I have read more than half of this book in the summer of 2018, loved it a lot and managed to get back to Jokai again.
Have no idea why I did not finish it, now I have to read it again.
