For small-town rebel Dani Webber magic and monsters are no more real than the Easter Bunny… until the day she accidentally stops time. Dani quickly discovers that not only do supernaturals exist, but she herself is one of them. This is great news for her life-long best friend Russ, who can finally come clean about his own supernatural status and his undying love for her. Before the two can start to enjoy the long overdue relationship, Dani is taken by a powerful council of supernaturals who believe she is the Chosen One destined to save them from extinction.

As if being kidnapped and expected to save the world isn’t bad enough, an ancient prophecy warns of the Chosen One’s dark nature: “Only the truest love will keep her an agent for good.” The council believes they know who this “true love” is and, unfortunately, that person isn’t Russ. The mysterious, powerful and devastatingly handsome Seer is the last person Dani wants in her life, but when she starts having visions of a horrific future, she has no one else to turn to for help.

Soon Dani finds herself torn between two very different boys with two very different opinions of whom she can trust. With the visions getting worse and time running out, Dani is forced to put aside her feelings and work with both the Seer and Russ before an ancient evil is unleashed upon the earth.

Firstly, I'd like to thank author Kelly Oram for allowing me to read and review this!

Find my complete review and more on my blog here

I have to be honest here and say I'm at a mixed mind when it comes to Chameleon by Kelly Oram. I'm a BIG Kelly Oram fan, having loved all the books of hers I've read so far, so I was really excited to read Chameleon. It had a great premise and knowing Kelly's knack for great characters and quirky storylines, I had high expectations. Unfortunately, Chameleon just wasn't for me.

It may have just been me, but Chameleon failed to suck me in like I wanted it too. Don't get me wrong, the storyline was interesting enough, but there was just something missing. Something I looked for time and time again as I read that I just didn't find.

I struggled to connect with the characters the most. Dani started out as feisty, fiery heroine, but I felt she lost who she was as the novel progressed. This may have been intentional to show her confusion and uncertainty in this whole new supernatural world she was discovering, but it was just lost on me as I second guessed and disagreed with so many of her choices and actions.

This may be one of the few, if only, books where I've ever thought the "best friend" was the better choice for our main character. Gabriel was a decent enough guy, but he was just too bland and boring and "good" and I didn't really buy his and Dani's love. I tried though. I did. I wanted to feel it--kept waiting for the moment when I did, but it just never came. I hate to say it, but it just seemed too fast and far fetched that these two people would connect the way they did; so fast and so soon. I understand this connection had a legitimate reason for happening, but it still didn't sit right with me.

Russ was the one I liked, the one I wanted Dani to choose. I didn't like that Dani went from wanting Russ desperately one moment to finding her "true love" in Gabriel the moment he was out of the picture. Just didn't seem legit.

I have to give Kelly Oram props for thinking outside of the box with this book however. The mystery that surrounds what Dani is gives way to a really interesting supernatural creature. Dani's abilities are something I've never ever seen before and I definitely enjoyed this aspect of the book. Add this with the characters of Russ, Duncan and perhaps even Gina and I may pick up the next book to see if Kelly Oram can win me over once more!

Ugh.

I am so frustrated with this book.
I hate that she didn't end up with Russ, I really hate that she choose Gabriel, and I really just hate the main character.

This book had so much potential, but I just hated how they destroyed the main character after the first chapters.
I kept hoping the author would fix it, but no, it just kept getting worse!
She turned into something I believe is even worse than Bella, and I realy didn't think that was possible.
Why? Why did Kelly Oram do this to the main character?

I liked the book less and less while reading it and I almost can't believe I finished it...
But I just kept hoping Dani would break through all the bullshit!
I'm guessing that hope will be the reason why I will probably also read the sequel.

This is my go to easy read series perfect for getting me out of a reading slump - I cannot believe more people haven't read this. I love everyone in this book... its probably the only book where I was rooting for both guys equally, I just love them both and the FMC is just badass.

The series just gets better from here, the world building is strong and got me hooked right away and super different to anything else I have read/seem before!

Just such a shame it looks like the final book will never be released :(

Review

Gah! I don't think I can rate this book fairly... It's well written... it held my interest throughout... I didn't want to put it down... I loved the "supernatural" elements of the story line... that would typically be 5 stars ... BUT there were several things I did not see coming and thus just couldn't fully buy into, accept and love this book.  I trusted & liked the wrong people and thus didn't really like the way the story line went.  It's a series... there is more to come which I will definitely read because as I've said before I LOVE the way Kelly writes and this story hooked me (it just frustrated me too).

Admittedly I am not huge a fan of love triangles, especially ones that are as twisted up as this one was but this is probably the first book I've ever read where the girl doesn't end up with the guy I think she should end up with... their relationship kinda creeped me out and felt totally fake to me which is so unlike the other books I've read that Kelly has written where I loved the interactions. Chameleon is book 1 in a new series, I will definitely read the rest of the series and then maybe I'll be able to fairly rate this book cause by the end it was feeling like a 3 star book but I can't give it just 3 stars for the reasons mentioned to start with...so 4 stars for now with a big hope I'll be more satisfied with the story line in the next book.

4 stars

Rating: 4 Stars (for now)

Content: I didn't write anything down... sorry I was engrossed in the story but the fact that I don't remember it as being too objectionable means there probably wasn't anything more than mild swearing and innuendo.

I've read the book weeks before... And I am not sure I remember it all. I forgot my notes in the office so I'll just typed whatever I remember about it.

Soooo... I very much liked the concept of this new novel of Kelly Oram. It's not like Being Jamie Baker, which I'm not sure if it's good or bad, maybe a little bit of both. Anyway, from the start... I don't like Russ. I really, really, really don't like him. He's like a bastard. Jackass or whatever you want to call him. Yeah, sure the banter between him and Dani made me laugh a bit but in all honesty, he's not at all likable. Well that is my opinion.

I get that Oram wanted to have love triangle and that Dani is confused of her feelings with one another. Uh... I mean the relationship between the three of them, I don't like it that much. I like Gabriel, but he's a bit timid for my taste. Or maybe it was just because I'm used to seeing Oram's male characters got spunk and cocky but in a good way. Russ is cocky but I hate how he is. I don't like him even one bit.

I also get that she might be trying something new to her story but I don't think the male character really do me in. If you know what I mean. But the story is really good. I love the idea of Chameleon. And yes, I actually didn't associate the animal, Chameleon to the book. lol. And I love the twists! Wow. It's good. :)

Dani is a very very likable female character. I love how she grows. How she finally choose where she'll be. Even though she's at first annoying, she kinda grow on you.

I so love the premise though. I love how Oram throw us with different kinds of supernatural. There's werewolf, witch, vampire, wizards, fey, seer, mythology, etc. It's so brilliantly created!

I loved this book. I really really did. I'd give this book a 4.5 but since that's not an option, I rounded up.

So there's this thing I have about love triangles... in short? I don't like them. They can be hilarious at times, but generally you already know who the character is going to end up with.
But somehow this book just makes it work.

Dani. Dani. Dani. This girl. She's a feisty little thing in the beginning, and it gets lost throughout most of the book because the whole "breaking the bond thing" (I'll explain it later) makes her someone who's so needy and clingy. But closer to the end, she becomes the person who she once was.

Russ... this guy a.k.a Dani's BFF. He's such a freakin' douchebag at times. Especially the situations he puts Dani in makes me want to punch him in the face. His character is flat though, to be completely honest. He's either an asshole or pining for Dani's love. (He manages to do both at the same time though...)

Gabriel. The other vertex in this love triangle. He's so proper and just.. bleg. He's been major support for Dani throughout the book. I do believe his character has potential to grow, especially because we find out that bit of info that made me like him just a tiny bit more.

Now what's funny about this book is that the side characters like Gina/Duncan/Alex seemed to be the most developed. (Maybe its just me) But I loved Gina and if you put together all the times she spoke, it might only add up to two pages and I think I liked her more than Gabe.

Duncan- Dani's guardian was really funny and I saw him as another father figure to her. Again, I liked him a lot . I just really did.

Now Alex. By FAR the most developed character in this ENTIRE book. If Kelly decides to have a spin off about him, i'd read it. I'm getting a little ahead of myself, but Alex (Alexander) is Russ's father and is also another father figure to Dani.

This guy had so many layers and his intentions were so pure that it was hard to believe how the story twist ! I didn't see it coming. But he loves Dani like she's his own and you can clearly see that he believes that what he's doing is good and it's all in the name of family.

Concepts I liked in this book:

Chameleon- This is pretty cool, I've never seen this concept done before which is pretty bloody cool if you ask me.

Cravings- Very cool, it's something supernaturals go through when they're coming into themselves (im sure theres a better way to say that). It lasts about 6 months I think. Basically means needing to be around other supernaturals because you're craving their energy/aurora... whatever. It makes a character very clingy. I guess it can definitely work to an advantage... especially if the person is HOT.

Bonds- Phew. I don't even know where to begin. It definitely has its pros and cons. So a bond (bare with me, i don't recall the book having a clear definition of this) is something that forms between two supernaturals when they share enough energy that a relationship is created (no, it's not always romantic if you were wondering). I believe it can only be formed during the cravings because you're most susceptible to their energy and you become dependent and influenced by it. (And I don't mean the person controls your will or actions or anything like that)When I say influenced, its just that the person is more likely to believe their bond partner than another person. I guess its like a high level of trust is developed in a short period of time. (Yes, thats exactly it)

It kind of reminds me of Cassandra Clare's concept of Parabatai. Its the same in the simple fact that once this bond is formed, it can be severely detrimental to their health if it's attempted to be broken and can also lead to death.
********
So the reason this book lost .5 stars:

1. Gabe randomly quotes shakespeare. I didn't understand the need for it. It doesn't even seem relevant to the situation when he does it.

2. Lack of character development for the main characters. So much more could've been done for them, but then again I believe that makes up for the awesome plot.

All in all, this was the first book i've ever read by Kelly and I'm excited to read the sequel to this as well as her other books.

Wow. Kelly Oram has finally let me down. In the most brutal fashion. I would've given this book 1 star but the plot was decent and I have a pretty soft spot for the writer. My main issue was with the characters. I HATED Dani and the two guys just didn't do it for me. But gun to my head, I'd probably choose Russ. Gabriel was just so boringly bland and quoting romeo and juliet?? Cue eyerolls.

This book had so much potential but it just kept getting worse and worse! The only reason I finished the book was that I was morbidly curious as to how much more of Dani's bullshit I could take. Usually, Kelly Oram's heroines are spunky and funny but Dani was just spineless, annoying and idiotic. The way she kept following Gabriel's every word like it was law got really old, really fast. However 'unnatural' her relationship was with Russ, it's probably the lesser of two evils seeing as how her bond with Gabriel was the result of torture. And WHY was she totally okay with being forced to marry the guy even going so far as to defend the Council's actions? Talk about being brainwashed. She's so dependent on him, it's crazy. Stockholm syndrome, anyone?

I'm probably going to read the other books though just to see if this whole fiasco of a book will be resolved. Here's hoping!

I didn't like this book at all...

I was thinking of giving it a 1, but I decided against it because the writing and setting wasn't so bad.

It was what the author decided to do with the story.

Make Russ and his father bad and make Gabriel and his kidnapping, brainwashing Council good.

I have never been so disappointed. The last one third of the book was a complete disaster, in my opinion...

RATING: 2.5 Hearts

I quite enjoy and find intriguing the prophecy deciding destiny tropes in books, so when Kelly Oram’s, Chameleon, proved to be little less mesmerizing and a lot more frustrating, I was not a satisfied reader, to say the least.

The backdrop of Chameleon – full of supernaturals of every race; warlocks, witches, vampires, werewolves, seers and demons – is much the same as any other paranormal read. And yet, there is a unique charm to its familiarity that I enjoyed very much. The beginning starts off promising enough, with Dani, our heroine, turning sixteen and finding out that not only is her best friend, Russ, a warlock but she is a supernatural as well, with her own special ability. This, coupled with the straight-forward, not overly complicated romance between Dani and Russ set-up the perfect, entertaining storyline. Initially, this is the sort of book that is easy to get absorbed in, however, it is the latter more-than half of the book, after Dani gets kidnapped by the Council of supernaturals, that provided a steady decline in the amusing factor.

With all its familiar ideas, it comes as no surprise that there would be something off about the story, despite the homey feelings stirred with the paranormal creatures that inhabit its world. The world-building is, really, nothing special. It’s a little bit of modern-lifestyle thrown together with a (very) subtle historic feeling when the Council of supernaturals is introduced. There is a lot of room for future development, which I think the story could benefit from for the rest of the series. Other than that, the world is neither interesting nor worth remembering, perhaps somewhere in between.

The plot isn’t much better off. After the kidnapping, the story picks up quite rapidly in its emerging events, and not in a good way. We have too much happening in the span of what feels like all of ten minutes. Dani gets kidnapped, the council is introduced, the Seer is introduced, the prophecy told, all with the love triangle at the center of attention. The storyline soon becomes overcrowded, with unexpected plot twists and turns – which if they had been in another story, presented a different way, I would have jumped at the chance to talk about, but not with this – too much unnecessary angst, and the endless descriptions, and over-complications of every decision Dani makes. The epic and mysterious plot that the description offers is, unfortunately, reduced to a tedious banality.

More than the plot being dull, it is the love triangle that made this read so frustrating for me, and perhaps the only book where I whole-heartedly favour the second guy over the first. Russ did it for me with his easy going demeanor and his loyalty towards Dani, to the point, where his character is the only character that garnered both sympathy and affection from me. I loved Dani and Russ, and the best-friends-to-lovers romance is a favourite of mine, which is why when Gabriel, the Seer, is brought into the picture I lost all semblance of having an open mind about this book. The love triangle’s failing played in part to all the extreme changes in the story. Dani goes from being a snarky, intelligent girl to a helpless, blind-by-love fool. The romance is cheesy, confusing, and definitely not worth rooting for. I couldn’t wrap my head around the “Gabriel-Dani” couple. Above all, I did not come to appreciate Gabriel's character. He has no spunk, no allure, rather he comes across as meek, not a character that gets my immediate attention. By the middle-end of the story, I found it difficult to invest in any of the characters, and ultimately, gave up trying to find a final redeeming quality. There is a lot more that could be said for the impossibility that this love triangle is, but to sum it up, it is beyond frustrating.

With that said, I believe Chameleon is the type of read that will work only for people who have the right mind-set and patience for a love triangle, and all the conflicting emotions that it brings. If not for that addition to the storyline, this could have been a worthwhile read. Nonetheless, despite my reservations, I am still hoping that Ungifted will prove to be what its predecessor is not – memorable with no (I wish!) or as little as possible mention of the love triangle. Keeping my fingers crossed.

October 10, 2017 Edit:
I found all the old notes I wrote about this one while reading. I choose not to publish them at the time because I didn't want to hurt this novel due to my massive love for Kelly Oram, but now that the book has been out for years I feel like it's okay to do so.

Following are my notes, in bullets, kind of all jumbled and including spoilers:

1.5 stars
So so sad that I ended up well and truly disliking the book. I love you Kelly Oram, but this one just hit all the wrong spots!

I started this one over three weeks ago. That’s how long it took me to trudge through.
If you told me the author wrote this book when she was fourteen, I would believe it. I went in expecting Jamie Baker vibes, but that’s not what this delivers. Admittedly it’s been a while since I read Jamie Baker, but the writing style in here did not mesh with me. It’s super basic and reactionary, full of all the righteous indignation and exclamation marks a middle grade reader could want. The plot is ridiculous and so over the top, and while we get told the MC fights everything and is a troublemaker, most of her actions prove otherwise. Sure, she argues, but then she goes along with the brainwashing. It’s not a well-crafted novel, and the lack of contractions bugged me to no end.

3.5 stars -- OK, so here's the thing: I'm actually not a fan of love triangles. Now that's not to say I won't love a book that has a love triangle, b/c one of my favourite authors unfortunately LOVES them and has a major one in one of my favourite series of hers. I guess it just has to be done right, or there has to be enough other stuff surrounding the story to push down my inherit dislike of love triangles. And this book failed to do that for me. What's weird is that I knew going in that there was a love triangle (uh duh, it's in the blurb), and quite frankly being a huge fan of Ms. Oram and being a part of her fan club, other readers inevitably even spoiled it for me (because people forget about that when they get excited and start fangirling), and so I even knew which boy probably won out in the end. Although, I guess that kind of ruined my read of this book a bit as well (kind of like More Than Jamie Baker being a bit spoiled for me ruined it a bit). People are so well meaning, but it really is hard to avoid spoilers once you join a fan club. So my advice? Don't join the fan club until you've read it all. Seriously.

OK, that was a stupid tangent to get off on. ANYWAYS. Right. Love triangles. So we start this book with Russ and Dani. And even though Russ could be kind of a prick at times, I kind of fell for the two of them together. I mean come on, they were hilarious and the bantering was funny and I really did feel chemistry. And a small part of me that hadn't reread the blurb before diving in hoped I had been wrong about the existence of a love triangle, b/c best friends to lovers stories?? Who doesn't love those? And OMG the paranormal stuff was so fun and exciting and intriguing, and I really was loving most of that!! (though her reactions to the cravings bothered me here and there, but I could deal with it) And then the council comes and takes her away (not a spoiler, this is all implied by the blurb for the book, so I figured I could mention it). And we meet book boy 2. And from that point on I just never really got back my verve for the story except in pieces here and there. You see, not only was I only meh on Gabriel (he was ok, just nothing spectacular IMO), I really didn't feel Gabriel and Dani's connection at all (no matter how many times we're told it's there). And when Russ comes back into the picture, he's an even bigger dick, and quite frankly I couldn't have cared less who Dani ended up with. I wasn't feeling either anymore. I refused to invest in either relationship b/c I honestly didn't know how it was going to pan out, b/c I didn't ever feel that great love that I was expecting that would show who the true love was supposed to be. So for me, this book was an epic romance fail.

Now on the supernatural side it was kind of intriguing. I LOVED that moment when I understood the title of this book. Dani's powers were quite cool, and I enjoyed the "fight" type scenes throughout this book. I will say that I went back and forth a GAGILLION times over who the bad guy was going to be. And sometimes I felt like Dani, Russ, and Gabriel were freaking idiots for not being a bit more cautious all around with all the powerful warlocks that they could encounter, but apparently I'm just paranoid that way. I always had it narrowed down to 2 suspects, and a part of me was mildly disappointed that it wasn't who I wanted it to be, but in the end it made the most sense. So fantastic mystery element. And I will say that the climax was quite emotionally impactful for me. I really hope we get to learn a bit more about the Supernaturals as a whole, b/c it felt like a lot of backstory was missing at times. I guess b/c we were really only dealing with a few types in this particular story. I'm actually very excited to see what else we'll learn in the future stories, and how the world will unfold.

And I totes agree with other readers, Duncan is da bomb. He disappointed me here and there, but he was one of the better characters in the story, particularly for such a minor one.

So I am definitely reading the next book in the series. Especially since it's from a different character's POV and so we'll get a fresh chance at a good romance. I will say that while I LOVE LOVE LOVE the covers for these books (and the interior formatting), I don't yet get the significance of the cool sun thingie. Have you read this book? Did I miss something?

I loved this book. The story line wasn't that original, since I have read other books with the prophetic heroine that saves the world and blah, blah, blah. What made me love this story so much was one character: Gabriel.

I have a serious soft spot for innocent, sweet, down to earth, insecure guys. Gabriel is the incarnation of that guy. He was so understanding and self sacrificing that it was hard to witness his pain throughout the novel. I wanted to dive in the book and hug him at moments *wink wink*. Russ even described Gab as "(...)quiet little Shakespeare-quoting emo boy(...)". TEAM GABRIEL!!

I had a problem with Russ from the beginning. Sure, he had his nice guy side, but the jerk side made too much of an appearance for my taste. He's also controlling and a dog. It felt like he would pee on Dani's foot if another guy even passed by and looked her the wrong way. To say the least, it got old, fast. The only redeeming quality he has in my eyes would be the hilarious one liners. They were gold!

I had no problem with Dani, though I still want to strangle her for some actions that I didn't agree with, but let's leave it at that. She really tried to live with what was thrown at her instead of whining. So for that I think she deserves to whine for a few minutes, she earned it.

I didn't guess who the villain was until it was revealed. The author kept me guessing throughout the whole book, which was a very fascinating experience (and somewhat confusing). With that said, it seems that there is a minor cliffhanger hinting at the future for book 2. I can live this one (which is a first), since it doesn't end in suspense with someone dying, kidnapped or fighting for their life. Thank you Mrs. Oram! This is much appreciated!

This failed to hit with the premise, as much as anything else. It's too bad because I kind of liked Dani and some of the relationships were intriguing. The premise that kills it for me is the whole "supernats must be energized by each other to thrive" thing. I know that seems harmless on first blush, but add an abusive, power-mad council running things with no checks and that said council is willing to "starve" a teen girl to oblivion to force her to their will and the abuse was more than I could take (particularly with the number of people who had to have been party to it). And yeah, I like the guy they're trying to stick her with and it totally isn't his fault that they're taking advantage of both of them and their collective naivety and the hints that they'll get out from under it is interesting to me.

But then I put it down for a day. That turned into a week. That is now months and I can't bring myself to pick it back up because that premise is such an invitation to abuse and I just don't want the story of the characters enough to put up with the deck stacked by nature (aka the author) against them.

hhhhhhhhhhhhhhhooooooooooolllllllyyy shit. (that is a good holy shit i promise ;) )

Song Choice, Song Choice: "The Science" by Coldplay, "The Best Day of My Life" by Brighteyes, "Vitamin R (Leading Us Along)" by Chevelle, "Stolen" by Dashboard Confessional kay now to explain this ness, i, meaning me, Becca the person writing this review, picked these songs as songs that you can listen to either help you understand/give you a better idea of different aspects of the book. so yeah. Those are my picks for this book :) enjoy...

First Thoughts: I LOVED THIS, I loved this i loved it i loved it. usually when i start to look at a book i will read the sample on amazon, I barely got three pages in before i was like screw it i am buying this! you can't stop me! Even better yet i became ridiculously addicted to this book, while i was at work i couldn't stop thinking about it and just hoping that the costumers would leave so i could get back to it! Unfortunately there was something that rubbed me the wrong way hence the four stars not five, but i still love this book. I truly did! I thought it was beauitfully written, the voice of the MC was strong for the most part, the twist and unexpected, just plain frustration it brought to me made me really happy, and for the life of me i couldn't guess what was going to happen! Fantastic! Stay tuned for the rating dropping, i swear i am not trying to be ass but this is suppose to be the short part of my review.

Plot: WOW. I loved it! So well thought out, while the MC's were confused and frustrated and trying to figure everything out i was in the same boat, i didn't know who to trust, i didn't know who the "bad" guy was, i didn't i was just as confused as everyone else. But isn't that the great thing about the grey area? There is no real right or wrong answer, it comes down to what its right for you, what is right for everyone even if that means you don't belong to group a or group b, it means you will stand as an individual to do what is right! FANTASTIC! Kelly Oram, you are FANTASTIC! So with all that said uuumm the romance... this was part of the reason the rating dropped for me. Holy mother of love-triangles. i think i was so upset because even i didn't know who to pick, and the worst part was that she didn't either, and i will get into this a little more in characters, but since this also has to do with plot i will say love triangle-y stuff here too. I was ready to either punch Dani in the face, or pound my head against a wall until it was over. Okay so be aware there is an intense love triangle here.

Thoughts on Characters:

Danielle: You can't even believe the crush i had on this girl when the book started. I loved Dani, I loved her voice, i loved her personality and i loved how fun she was. She had this awesome mixture, of being totally, sassy, smartass-ed (sort of the same thing i suppose), she was kickass, brave, but also still very girlie in the fact that this is a girl who is 16 and never had been on a date or have been kissed. I really fucking loved her....thennnn something happened, and her voice kinda got lost in the plot almost? here is the other reason the rating dropped for me. I wanted her to be that sure hearted, passionate girl we met at the beginning of the book! I did sort of hate her a little at some points because she was making it hard for us to believe how she felt about either one of the guys, i mean she was being very quiet even to the readers about how she felt, and i understand that was part of her character as well she doesn't like those mush-y mush-y moments, fine that is okay but you also did tell us in the beginning how much Russ meant to you and when you are picking between our two men i need you to be that strong, fun, awesome girl again. AND i will not take it out on her too much because she is also scared, and she has been thrown into something she doesn't fully understand so because of this reasoning i just talked myself into a little bit i think its time to change the rating to 4.5....anyways back to Dani, BUT i was sooo sooo so so so so so so so so very happy because she came back to us! she did! she came back yay!!! And i did admire how well she took most of everything, i loved that she didn't need to be the total badass all the time because lets face it kids we can't be badass all the time, well besides Katniss that but that is because she is like on steroids or something ;) sorry finally watched the trailer to Catching Fire...

Russ: WHY WHY WHY WHY WHY WHY! I always love the fun loving one! The funny, amazing at pranks, sexy one is the one i always fall for. And He was truly the perfect first love, but unfortunately all awesomeness has to come to an end sometime. He was hurt i understand that but he broke my heart as well in so many ways! I thought Russ was a fantastic character and i feel we are not done with him, we are no where done with him really. Russ had a tempter on him as well, he could be a bit of an ass but he was a good character and i really liked him.

Gabriel: You know...he made me realize how much i miss Alpha males when they aren't around... Okay Gabriel has an interesting past, and he is a bit ... innocent and is it so wrong of me that the moment we met him i couldn't WAIT until Dani corrupted him? Is it too much to ask for this boy to become a bit of a rebel, well he is a bit rebellious i suppose, boy does he have a surprise for you! hahaha XD He was the silent storm that comes upon you and you don't even realize how much you have come to care for him before its too late and you find yourself in love with two men. He did make me want to punch him in the face a couple times, i was like grow some balls and act like a man! For fuck sakes! I read far to many Alpha male types, because this is the type of guy i would have normally been all like AWWW before...jeez but i still loved his sweet demeanor, and he was so selfless he really was! Soo sweet! :)

oh Romeo and Juliet... really? Really.... slightly judging you right now Kelly but i still love you! :)

Ending: There is still lots to come from this i am sure but for right meow you can rest, breathe, get your bearings!

Very, very last thoughts: I truly did love this. I thought it was fantastic and i cannot wait to read the next one...and i will be doing some stalking because i don't know if the second one is out or not, i really don't know anything to be honest.

Alright so if you enjoyed this review, YAY i am doing something right. Great start to a new series!

I got to admit I was a wee bit weary when I started this novel. Because in the first chapter there was a douche-bag guy and a smart-ass girl.. so very Oram actually! I was reminded of Being Jamie Baker - and was worried this might be very similar. Well besides the snarky rebellious impertius teens that are in the book this has not that much in common with BJB. I got to admit that I've been wondering what kind of a teen Oram was. Anything near those very entertaining to read but probably totally infuriating characters of hers? I for sure have no right to jude, because quite frankly my mother had stated that around 15/16 the sweet little girl that used to reside in my room was replaced with some monster.I for one certainly get angry, irreverent, insubordinate types.

The story line was interesting, in fact this book was a page turner for me. Despite my issues with love triangles. And this love triangle was weird to say the least. And I found some characters annoying as well. But it didn't bother me actually, I just devoured the book. It's quite a long book with its 400pages, but I basically read it in one setting. The fact that there were several possible culprits and that there was so much happening and unraveling, kept me going. To be honest I did guess who the villain was quite early on, but not without swaying a good few times. Which I think it one of the great things about this novel. The mystery part.
The down side very little of the mystery was revealed and I was left with loads of questions and lots of the threads are unfinished as such.
The romance parts were, well, odd. I think quite a few people might be surprised. I found the explanation to it, interesting. The love triangle annoying. But there were also really beautiful moments and while most of it was kinda out there, the moments when Oram got it right ended up over ruling those.

The entire book is written from Dani's POV, except for the Prologue that is. So it's easy to connect to Dani. While at first she was kinda annoying and angry and irreverent. She does grow, she does after loads of wavering choose a stand.
Russ and Gabriel couldn't be more different from each other, and yes, I know I said it, but I totally dreaded the whole love triangle. But I did enjoy the moments between Dani and Gabriel. While Russ was too brash, too arrogant and just a douche half the time. Gabriel was too goody goody. I found his prim and proper language after a couple of hundred pages really annoying, the fact that he was so super naive was quite unbelievable. I like the bad boys, normally at least. But I am team Gabe, despite it all. Because Russ, while I smirked at the banter between him and Dani for quite a bit of it, was just a jackass half the time. And I found him totally immature.
My biggest critic about most of the characters is that they were all rather polarized, and not exactly rounded.

The world building is clever. It's contemporary, set in the world we all know and then Oram threw in a huge lot. Mythology, Joan of Arc , wizards, seers, oracles, fey, necromancers, vampires, werewolves, demons, angels of death… you name it - it's in there. Look it's not extraordinary or some great new inventions. But with all the known elements she also added a few twists, that made it interesting enough. Though the gaps are far from filled.

This is actually my favorite of Oram's books so far. And I think it is an interesting and engaging start to a new series. I am hoping we will be able to read the sequel very soon!

Let me start off by saying I freaking love this book! I seriously love it!

Danielle grew up attached to her best friend Russ. They were inseparable. They never spent a day apart and were constantly getting into trouble together. On Dani's sixteenth birthday Russ gives her something she wished for when she was a little girl and then told her his biggest secret. She couldn't believe it. One night while she is on her first date with someone who is not Russ, she ends up casting a spell. She completely looses it and avoids Russ. When she she finally has no choice but to talk to him and his dad, Alex, she gets thrust into a supernatural world she never believe existed.

Dani is stripped from everything she knows and loves and is forced to go to the consulate and deal with her new powers. Upon arrival she sees the most beautiful boy, Gabriel, she has ever seen who just so happens to have the power she needs. Dani outspokenness and rebellion gets her into trouble. When she finally is "awake", she finds herself in a situation she never even dreamed was possible.

With Gabriel by her side she has to fulfill her purpose but at the expense her the one she grew up to love.

This book took you through a roller coaster. Once you think you have figured something out, everything changes and your back to square one. Each twist in the story made me gasp out look (earning me weird looks from everyone around). The love triangle was killer! It was so hard to decide who want to root for but I couldn't help loving Gabriel. The ending caught me off guard even though I had my suspicions but I just hoped it wouldn't turn out that way. Can't wait to hear more from Gabriel and Dani (maybe even some Russ)!

So...I'm a little torn on this book. I mean...I liked it, but then I didn't like it.

The book as a whole, I liked. Minus the whole love triangle that just seemed forced to me. Why didn't she end up with Russ? Oh, because she was tortured for two weeks where she was practically dying, and then she was placed with Gabriel. So as she was getting better, he was always around, caring for her. So she started to have feeling for him. But...that's not love. She now has a dependency issue going on, where she can't live without him.

There's a term for that...it's called Stockholm syndrome.

I just don't agree with it. Before this, she was in love with Russ (which I agree, neither of them had a chance to love someone else), but would someone really just put 13 (wasn't sure of the actual number, so I'm guesstimating) years of friendship behind them like that? She may have had her bond severed from him...but not the other way around. Though, I guess it might be better for Russ for it to happen like that...I just thinks its wrong.

And Gabriel? I didn't like him at all. I felt that he didn't have a personality. Or maybe it was that he was too formal. That's not pretty. No matter how hot his tattoo may be.

Alex? Even though I saw it coming...I didn't see it coming (or I just pretended I didn't). Now that I think about this...Russ really did lose everyone he cared about. It's not fair...for him.

I'm going to be in denial until Russ has a happy ending!! With someone! Ooh...how about the ungifted one? Dani did say they favored...though that may be awkward...

A vividly imaginative young adult novel of paranormal and supernatural creatures, and a 16 year-old girl's struggle to find her place in this frightening new world. This fast-paced, action packed paranormal romance had twists and turns, and no true certainty who the bad guys were and who were the good guys. The heroine had a believable character arc, maturing from fairly self centered to much more noble and caring about others, and about doing what was right. There was an absolutely heart-wrenching love triangle, which I usually hate, but the author pulled it off well, although I would have preferred she gave more attention to the new guy who arrived on the scene later, and developed him and his relationship with the heroine a little more. But he was still likable--very much so--and I felt very torn between the two boys. And even though the book ended on a "happily for now," it had a such satisfying enough ending that I closed the book with a sigh, and yet excited to read the rest of the series.
Note: It doesn't have any sex in it, but be aware there is some "biblical" swearing in it which will bother conservative readers, and is the one reason why I hesitate to give it to my teens to read.

Great YA paranormal romance. Dani and Russ have been best friends since they were 3 years old, but when she turns 16, he reveals a secret about himself that throws her into a whole new world and leaves her questioning everything she believed to be true…and what she believed to be mythical. Warlocks, witches, werewolves, faeries, and seers all exist…and she might be the most powerful of them all. Is she the Chosen One prophesied about who would destroy all evil…or will Evil destroy earth because of her? This was awesome. The author’s writing style is fast-paced and witty. I loved how Russ and Dani banter back and forth in playful taunting/teasing. The love triangle tugged at my heartstrings as Dani tries to determine whether her feelings are love…or the supernatural pull of the cravings as she comes into her power. I can’t wait to read the next one in this series. Even if you don’t like paranormal stories (they aren’t my favorite), you might need to make an exception for this one because Kelly Oram’s books are completely amazing and will captivate you no matter what genre you prefer.

*headdesks*

I haven't read a book this terrible in a while. Please, spare yourself from this book.

I'm writing the full review ASAP.
For now, I'll leave it at this.

Two boys fight over 'The Chosen One' who is an incredibly powerful anomaly.
These two boys are petty and naive.

Their personalities were inconsistent with their actions and even more inconsistent with their words.

Also....would a jealous straight boy talk about his amazing skin cream in front of his rival? Then call a girl 'Skankilicious'?
I cringed, and tried to move on.
It didn't work.
Please, for the love of Poseidon, Don't. Read. This. Book.

There are books that follow this trope that actually manage to do it really, really well. I just feel like the author needed way more....something. I'm not sure what. Nothing was put together well. Plot holes you could drive a Bat-Mobile through, shoddy dialogue, poor premise.... agh, just don't do it.

Plot

In this novel, we are introduced to a world full of various supernatural creatures: warlocks, witches, seers, vampires, werewolves–everything under the sun. Danielle grew up in a small tow in Pennsylvania with the company of her parents, her best friend Russ, and Russ’ father Alex. On Dani’s sixteenth birthday, Russ tells her that he’s a warlock. Soon, Dani is thrust into the world of the supernatural and is told that she is to fulfill the great prophecy. This novel definitely was not boring. There was such a great and busy story line that it never got dull. There were also some unexpected twists and turns and misleadings that you never exactly knew what was going to happen.

Leading Lady

Dani was the leading lady. She was definitely a strong character. She was a bit of a trouble maker, tough, and didn’t take crap from anyone. She was brave and strong when faced with kidnappers, torture, and everything else evil in the world. She was an inspiration, and she wanted to go what was right. In that way, she was also a very selfless character, and I immensely enjoyed reading about her adventures.

Leading Male

This novel definitely has a love triangle in it.

Russ: Russ was Dani’s best friend, the guy that she had spent her whole life with. So of course, there is some confusion about feelings when the day she gets thrusts into the supernatural world he admits that he loves her. Russ was a very…unique character. He had a very strong personality. He was cocky, vain, and actually kind of a jerk to everyone but his father and Dani. He was a great and well-written character, but I have to say that I liked Gabriel much more.

Gabriel: Gabriel was the other guy. He is the current Seer in the paranormal world. He was sensitive, innocent, and naive, and they was just really attractive in him. He was faithful and good, and refused to see the bad in anyone. He was that ray of sunshine and hope in bad situations. And he had a few little cute quirks. It was adorable seeing him acclimate to Dani’s overbearing personality which so starkly contrasted with his. And he talked all formal-like. It was super cute.

Other Characters

Duncan: Duncan took on the role of Dani’s big brother, when in fact he was a vampire-protector assigned to Dani. He took her under his wing and wanted the best for her, even if that’s not what the Council’s orders were. They had a very light and teasing relationship that I loved reading and seeing glimpses of. You could tell that they quickly formed a brother-sisterly type of bond soon after they met.

Romance

There were two very distinct types of romance in this novel. There was Dani and Russ, which really, was just as confusing for me as it was for Dani. There were some unnatural bonds going on between them and I really couldn’t discern what was lust and what was love and what was best-friends-love. It was a tricky thing. On the other hand, there was Dani and Gabriel, which just felt more realistic. Gabriel wasn’t as forceful and actually gave Dani the chance to chose, whereas Russ was trying to basically force Dani to pick him. Gabriel and Dani together were just as sweet as honey.

World Building

Although the paranormal creatures that we witness in this novel are common, Oram concocted a tale that was unique to her novel. Adding in Cravings and things like prophecies and Councils made what could have been a very boring book interesting. Other than that, Oram definitely put some thought into the world that she created. It was meticulously thought out with explanations for anything and everything. I can’t wait to see more of the world that Oram built in the next novel, Ungifted.

Conclusion

Chameleon was a outstanding novel about a girl fulfilling a prophecy and choosing who she wants to love. I can’t wait to see what else this series brings us.

I love Kelly Oram’s writing style!

She jumps into this urban fantasy with the same feel of wild abandonment I love in V is for Virgin. She uses exclamation points!!!! :-D The characters are vibrant, the story is so fast-paced… I couldn’t put it down.

The trouble with the love triangle is not so much… the love triangle but every motivation behind it. Dani doesn’t know who is telling the truth and it gets so tangled up that not every trusted person can be who they say they are. The pressure mounts… and the persona under fire is the father-figure. Whose father figure is lying?

Oram puts the squeeze on ‘til I can barely stand the tension. There are peeks in the future that actually make bigger messes of things, rather than clear them up. Which, frankly, felt like fantastic writing that made me really squirm. I was ready to shake the truth right out of anyone I could get my hands on.

Everything clears up, the tangle of loose ends is explained, but not remotely close to how I’d imagined it would. Also, something I really enjoyed. The trouble comes from choosing a side too early… in this book, no one is above selfish motives.

Oh… and the fantastical world? I squirmed when the spiritual world as I imagine it came to life. *shudder*

I really love Dani. She’s smart. She thinks fast. She’s not afraid to dive into things headfirst. She has spunky attitude, too. LOTS of attitude. I swallowed her character whole and I’m still irritated with manipulative authorities. Grrrr She grows and changes delightfully, with speed, motivation and youthful energy.

Russ is one of my all-time favorite personalities EVER in fiction. He is so fun, so full of life, so real, & so full of attitude. The spats between him and Dani were wonderful. These two are too alike for any peace. They honestly reminded me of Jo March and Laurie… only this time, Dani really likes Russ and doesn’t see their fighting as a reason to not hook up. Yesss!!

The Seer. How interesting that he isn’t named in the book summary. Lol. His story barely gets started in this book. He is nice. He is sweet. His is very mysterious. We meet him from Dani’s perspective which is just plain WARPED by the time she gets to know him, so I have all kinds of questions, still. This guy has yet to prove himself to me but I caught the hint that we’re nowhere near done with him. My fear is that he is pure sugar and unhealthy.

There are two father figures and neither is above reproach. Both have ulterior motives, both manipulate Dani abominably. They really draw the battle lines. Neither can be entirely right. My complaint about this book would be right here… one of them seems to change too drastically and the other rang hollow to me. I don’t respect an adult that can tell a youth they don’t like them to their face. There’s something about being an adult, especially a respected adult, that recognizes good and bad all bundled in one character. To say “I don’t like you” is petty coming from a anyone and reduced my respect for one father figure and the entire system because they put him in authority.

My rating: Dani & Russ 5’s for me! The Seer was a 4 in hopes of more to come. The world building is 4.5. The fathers were 3’s – I dock them a lot of points because they were so essential to the story. I really love Kelly Oram’s writing style. I look forward to reading everything written by her! Another 5. Altogether, a resounding 4.

Cover Love: I do love this cover. I like the girl looking over her shoulder. I'm not sure what the ball of fire is, but I like it. I LOVE the title. Perfect.

I don’t really have any idea who the author, Kelly Oram is, until one day, a friend of mine introduced her books to me. I was doubtful at first, but I came out of my comfort zone and signed up to her blog’s newsletter. And I am so grateful that I did. I’ve been a fan of the hit TV series, The Vampire Diaries and The Originals and was really drawn into it. So I was hopeful that this book would have that same effect on me. And viola, my wish was granted! This book is so intense that I deprived myself of sleep. I love the thrill and also love the idea of adding romance into it.

I may not say them boldly, but I’m a hopeless romantic chick, and any small romantic scene would easily swoon me off my feet. And just by starting this book, it already got my heart. It was so beautifully written and I’m so in love with the plot. The witches, warlocks, vampires, and a lot more in just one book. Now, who wouldn’t love that?

I always thought of love triangle as too cliché, though this book is like that, it was still surprisingly enjoyable to read. I don’t really have a favorite between Russ and Gabriel, but both of them made me feel like a teenage girl who’s in love. Before I start reading this story, I accidentally bump into a super spoiler review in goodreads, so I already know who Danielle would end up with. But what caught my curiosity, is how their lovestory would be executed. Reading their lovestory made me feel like I am reading a thriller book from Mary Higgins Clark wherein I am guessing who the real culprit is. Haha, I was that attentive when it comes to the main characters lovestory part.

Normally, I would end up liking Russ, because of the idea of him being the bad guy. Why? Hello! Every girl loves a bad guy. Good guys are somewhat boring, but Gabrielle is far from being one. Oh my! The more I read this book, the more I am starting to like Gabrielle’s character. <3

I really love the book. The plot is amazing. The characters we’re so easy to keep track of. And not to mention, easy to grasp terms were used in this book. But the only complaint that I have in this book is having its fair share of confusing scenes, and also, I just thought that it ended too easy for me. While reading the ending, I just said, “is that it”? But it wasn’t really that bad, my 4-star rating would be the evidence.

My overall experience in this book is amazing! I am really looking forward on reading the second book. Wooot!

P.S. Would like to extend my gratitude to the talented author, Kelly Oram for sending me the copy of all 3 books in the Supernaturals series.

Ok so it is a 2.5 star book for me... And I really like her other books.

****This will have spoilers if you don't want to know please turn back now. You have been warned****

So I was really excited when I read the preview on her website. I had been looking forward to this book.

The idea was good.... I really liked the whole chameleon thing... That was a kind of awesome idea... And putting ALL the super naturals together! Love it! And the writing wasn't bad....

Here is the problem... The 3 main characters...

Dani....mad me really mad at the start of the book. Her reaction to Russ pissed me off. I get that she was freaked out but she had know him her entire life. And they had the bond (I'll get to that later). Then as the story went on I kinda liked dani. I never loved her, I ended up feeling sorry for her. It felt like both these guys were holding her back and she should break the bonds with BOTH...

Russ... What do I say here? Um, he didn't do it for me in the bad boy Damon Salvatore way. He was a jerk & his sweetness was buried really deep. I did like when he blasted his crazy father. He wasn't complex enough for me to fall in love with him. And I think he will be a bad guy in the next books.

Gabe.... Ugh this guy sucked... I'm sorry he was boring and proper. I get that he had visions and was raised his WHOLE life locked up with an uber protective father figure... And he read nothing but Shakespeare... And btw Romeo and Juliet isn't a love story!!!! They BOTH die!!!! And everytime they quoted it to each other it was so outta place I laughed, and not in the funny ha ha kinda way...

Ok lets talk about characters I did like...

Duncan.... LOVED, LOVED, LOVED.... Why didnt she write this character's personality for either Russ or Gabe?!?!? And why wasn't he the main character?!? He was hands down the BEST part of the book!!!!

Gina... Really liked the tiny bit of her we got.

Alex... He seemed like a well rounded fleshed out bad guy. Now I totally saw the "twist" coming that he was really the leader... But he was the right amount of complex... And I 100% believed his motives! And you wanted to root for him to do the right thing, and you hoped he would find redemption. I will say I'm glad he isn't dead. But I can only see more evil in the future.

Ok what did I hate the most?!? That Bond crap!!! Ugh... Terrible! Terrible! Terrible!!! It was like it was this annoying character you kept hoping would be killed off!

Now I wish I had loved this book and I wished that the love story made me swoon, but when I start wishing she chooses herself over either of the guys.... I know there is a problem with the love story...

Will I read the next book? Probably not. I'm glad that I finished because the final battle was a strong way to finish, but I'm done with these characters and their world. I feel like I got a resolution and I have no desire to prolong the story.

SO GOOD
It was different from most of Kelly's books, because this one we have a supernatural added to the cute, innocent romance that make tiny glittery butterflies feel in your stomach.

I love the book! I love how refreshing it is to see the main character, Dani denying the supernatural world. It's quite normal actually, the panic, the horrifying feeling and also feeling betrayed. She was raised human, she has human feelings though she is something else (I said that in the Arrow's voice) She is a....supernatural awesomeness, as Russ said. Oh Russ! I really liked him, he was fun, even if he was a major jerk but poor boy, I hope he found his happiness in the third book. He deserved someone to love him, someone NOT similar at all like him.

Like Dani got someone who can calm her down, someone who is her weakness and her strength. People, Gabriel is everything. Okay he's not the knight in shining armor, not the badass badboy who comes to save the damsel in distress, though he did take care of Dani after she was left in the White Room but still, he's a pretty decent, cool and chill person. He's water to Dani's fire and it's just explosion, magnificent. I love it!

I did not expect who the traitor was, I was to concentrated on Dani and Gabriel, i did not watch to miss any details. Yet I doubted the High counselor as he fits the traitor image quite well but damn, it's always the one close to you and the one who has always been good to you that betrays you hard. Obviously, if the person was not close to you, you wouldn't give a shit.

Anyway, I'll perhaps read the other two books in the near future. Especially the one on Russ.

As soon as I read the description for this book I just knew I had to read it! I mean come on we have Magic, A Manipulator of Time, Seers, Monsters, Creatures of all kinds, Action, Adventure, and of course, Romance. It has it ALL! I loved it! I am so praying that the sequel doesn't take forever to be released, because I really need the second book NOW!!!

The writing was amazing! Kelly is very creative, and kept me glued to the pages, needing more. This book was fast-paced with action and adventure around every corner! I found this book to be re-refreshing, and had its own originality to it.

I loved the main characters Dani! She was a fighter! Even through the crazy world she found herself in, she still manged to hold a grip on reality, and pull through it! I also like the fact that she had two very sexy guys competing for her heart. I usually am not a big fan of love triangles, though they do bring drama and emotion to a book. But Kelly did this love triangle just right.

Overall, I enjoyed the world that Kelly created. I loved the characters and enjoyed the love triangle. I definitely enjoyed that Kelly was able to throw me through the loop a couple of times. I will most definitely be reading the second book in this series, and I would recommend this to readers that want a fun, refreshing adventure!

I so love Kelly's writing! She is so creative and does that teenage emotional turmoil & clever snark so well. My favorite gift of hers is her ability to create addictive (hard to stop reading) and believable attraction and chemistry between her characters. This story was slightly different because the "cravings" experienced by Dani are more than just her own normal physical attraction to a love interest, but a supernatural hunger that needs to be fed by physical contact with other supernatural beings. ...I'm beginning to suspect maybe I'm supernatural too & that's why I like physical touch so much. ;) It's just part of my make up. :p Okay, maybe not. Anyway, I loved this story & am so excited that it is the start of a series. There are a number of loose ends I am wondering about - and a character I definitely want to see more of!

Although this is one of Kelly Oram's first books, I would have pegged it for the actual first. With the exception of the other two books in this series of three, I've read all but one of Kelly's fourteen other books. They have NOT disappointed! This one was good, don't get me wrong, and still worth a 5 star rating because she deserves it, but it wasn't as gripping or believable as the others. I guess she has set the bar so high, that I find myself expecting perfection, which Kelly always delivers.
It could be the relationship between Dani and Gabriel that doesn't sell me and I am left wondering how on earth that happened, even though it is explained in the last part of the book.
HOWEVER!!! This is still a really fun book to read, it kept me guessing as to who the bad guy really was and I really liked the ending.
