In the title, the Vietnam war is told in an extraordinary graphic novel. The stories may be fiction, but their intensity and emotional resonance point to social and personal truths that go beyond mere facts. Writer and artist Don Lomax is a Vietnam war Veteran.
Based on his real life combat experience in Vietnam and an earlier stint in Korea, Lomax's Vietnam Journal chronicles a wide range of experiences of the soldiers fighting at the front lines. Fictional character Scott Neithammer - an alter ego of Lomax himself lands up in Vietnam to cover the war and comes face to face with the dilemmas, danger and the sheer audacity of some of the acts of valor of the troops. Though the journal is a fictionalized account, Lomax manages to make each tale convincing.
The defining story for me: After a mission Neithammer ponders on the absurdity of war and is convinced that 'Nam's probably the most pointless one to date. He soon gets a ripartee: '...hope Hemmingway doesnt hear you'
