I bought this and read it in one go. It didn’t take very long because it’s only a short work of about 40-50 pages. About half of it comprises sexual activity; the main character, Amelia Swann, is into being dominated and ravaged by groups of men. The rest deals with her detective skills as, on the advice of an absent Sherlock Holmes, she investigates peculiar and brutal murders alongside a male detective (with his own sexual kinks) whom she fails to seduce.
It is a pity that the book is so short in some ways, inasmuch as Ms Swann could well have been developed into a very interesting character. The solution, or part solution at least, of the mystery is frankly ridiculous, but leaves the way open for a sequel.
In summary then, I would say that the author has largely wasted her lead character as so much more could have been done with her in terms of fleshing her out and concentrating on her skills as a female version of Holmes. The sex is at least well written but isn’t particularly imaginative. However, it is probably better than the rest of the plot. The steampunk element in the book is very slight. I’m not sure who the target audience might be!
I was disappointed. This could have been so much better and I feel that making it so would have been well within the capabilities of the author.
