Administrative Assistant, Dedra Hanson has three addictions. Gorgeous shoes, yummy treats and her sexy boss. Her credit card balance and bathroom scale do a pretty good job of keeping the first two addictions in check. And the third? Love of her job has always kept her from acting on her passion for Paul Chastain. But now she’s leaving her job because her playboy CEO boss is about to become engaged to a chilly socialite to save his business. Paul Chastain is fair game.
All she needs for one wild fantasy night? The nerve to seduce her boss, and a little bit of magic. The only question left is, can she leave when the clock strikes midnight?

A lovely novella which did exactly what author hoped to accomplish - made me as a reader interested in reading more of this series. I love anything to do with cooking, and the premise of three witches cooking delicious food while helping their customers find love... well, I was hooked. Recommended!
Mix a little magical chocolate with a secret lust and watch a sensual volcano explode between two people who have insisted on liking each other into a state of banality.
Paul Chastain won’t touch his secretary. She’s the best one he ever had, and his best friend. He’s put her on a pedestal and won’t even dare to rock the boat. Oh, don’t mention ‘rocking’ anything – the hero has to be so very careful about his thoughts because, you know, they’re inappropriate. I so enjoy watching a man try to control himself when everything inside screams ‘TAKE!’ What made him so interesting was wondering what was going to trip him up. A man who has to struggle so hard to keep a rein on his urges is bound to blow in a spectacular fashion and that was what I couldn’t wait to see.
Dedra has absolutely no problems with admitting she has the hots for her boss. Has for years. Ms. Weber made it very clear that Dedra’s feelings weren’t’ shallow or short-lived and that’s what made her unrequited love that much more poignant. I liked the list of things the author had the heroine do to ‘distract’ herself from her ‘inappropriate’ feelings. Distraction is good because based upon some family history, Dedra refuses to be a cliché. Also, I understood the heroine’s decision once she found out about Sylvia Bittle. What she hadn’t counted on, and what I found fascinating, was the wrinkle coming out of left field – the daughter of a woman determined to see her wed, and that daughter equally determined not to be. Dedra was the perfect foil.
What follows is entertaining. A little hint there, the taking on of a dare, and a few subtle clothing changes later and a reader finally gets to enjoy what all Paul and Dedra’s careful posturing could not prevent. Passion explodes and both characters are made aware of each other on a whole new level, on every level. This wouldn’t be a Tawny Weber romance if it ended there. No, there comes the moment after the glow wears off. One has an epiphany and the other freaks and somehow they both have to come to terms with their new potential relationship and all that it means or could mean. That whole process was interesting and I enjoyed it.
As for the daughter who didn’t want to get married, her name was Anja. She played an integral role in getting the plot to move along but the way the author presented this secondary character lead me to believe that she will have her own story someday. No one that successful in thwarting a matchmaking momma can resist forever. Mothers have their ways. And, although I found some of the scenes that ventured into Anja and her family’s life a bit distracting from the main story arc, probably due to the depth of detail that the author took pains to get into, I guess it served as a solid hook to get a reader interested in Anja’s future story. If that was the intent, then it was successful.
On the whole, Sugar and Spice is a fun way to spend an afternoon. It’s a typical scenario fulfilled in an unconventional and entertaining manner. Paul and Dedra were sweet and saucy together and I enjoyed watching them unravel and then come back together in a stronger, potentially happier place. The fireworks between them were believable and fun. I liked the little bit of mystical manipulation and its effects. It’s a cute story and I think fans of Ms. Weber will like it.
3⭐ Genre ~ contemporary fiction Series ~ Karma Cafe, #1 Setting ~ California Publication date ~ September 21, 2021 Est Page Count ~ 98 (7 chapters +e) POV ~ multiple 3rd Featuring ~ boss/assistant, minimal steamage
Dedra & Paul work together and each have secret feelings for the other, but being he's her boss it's forbidden. He's supposed to be marrying someone else for convenience for a merger, too.
We also here from Anja who is a witch of sorts. She helps Dedra make her move on Paul one night. It seems like the series surrounds Anja and her family based on the series title, but this seems odd to me since she's not really the main focus.
Overall, it was fine, but I feel like this would have benefited from being longer. There's no real backstory to why he needs to marry someone else. Also, could have gone for a few chapters of them working together in order to build up the tension and not be like hey let's bang and now we're in love.
Took me less than an hour to read it. Happy to get a title off my kindle that's been there since December 2020.
This is a fun, quirky and sweetly thrilling romantic adventure filled with love, passion, magic and family. I so want to have a meal at the Karma Cafe... the treats sound so decadent!
Dedra Hanson is a sexy, curvy and sassy administrative assistant with a crush on her uber sexy boss that is about to be married for a business merger.. (no way is she sticking around for that) Playboy CEO Paul Chastain has the best assistant in the world if only he can keep his thoughts about her out of the gutter and save his family company.. Loved the chemistry and emotionally engaging drama between them. Adored the Karmanski women and their magical assistance.
Dedra and Paul made the twisted fairy tale an enjoyable read. Their sex scenes are well written and titillating. Dedra' s character is lovable and believable. I was pulling for her every step of the story. This is a fun read with Paul having morals, strength and honor. The magic provided has given them the strength to act on their feelings.
Nothing like a tarot card reading to actualize your fantasies. Loved the dual perspective and how it wove together like vines. The shift from view to view was a sensual dance in my brain.
Take a secretary, her boss and add truffles made from sugar and a little bit of magic and you get this steamy love story. This is a quick but satisfying read.
This was a fun, sexy little story with a hint of magic. It was too short and lacking in any depth, but it is entertaining and mindless romance, which definitely has its time.

A decadent blend of love and magic with a topping of fantasies coming true!
Sugar & Spice is a wonderfully written contemporary romance with a sprinkle of magic that sets love on its course to finding happily-ever-afters. In this story it’s Dedra Hanson’s turn to see what the cards hold for her. To see if her fantasies about her soon to be former boss, Paul Chastain, can be as wild and steamy as her imagination has painted. And at the center of all the magic is Karma Café and the three Karmanski women-three generations of gypsy ladies with a penchant for magic- working together to hold onto their family business. And as luck would have it Anja Karmanski has a touch of magic of her own to help Dedra get over her shyness and find true love. Let there be no mistake though, magic cannot force a bond but only lighten the mood while fate works to bring together two lives. Anja knows this, but it sure is fun to watch Dedra discover just how strong and determined she is to fight for what she wants. To leave behind her shy wallflower tendencies and reach out to take what matters to her most.
The author has delivered a tastefully written and well edited romance complete with steamy lust and sex. And kissing…wow, the kissing! The tension between the two main characters is vivid. The dialogue witty while contrasting with great insight to each character that even had me laughing out loud. I loved how Paul tried convincing himself to keep back and not act on his lustful intentions towards his perfect-for-him secretary. And what is keeping him from acting on his steamy fantasies about his secretary? Corporate strategy and manipulative board members that want to control the Chastain brothers by demanding Paul marry off not only his father’s company through a merger but also himself to help create a sense of security for the stockholders.
Both Dedra and Paul will have to take control if they want change. There are plenty of forces working against them and to see if they are strong enough to go up against them and win makes for a compelling story with heart. Sugar and Spice is novella length and packs a punch in a short time. Tawny Weber made my must-read list with her Blaze titles and will not be budging from that spot! I am definitely looking forward to more Karma Café stories!
Dedra has a thing for her boss, Paul. She has had it for a good long while. The plan was simple. She would be gone before he gets back, two weeks served. She couldn’t continue to work alongside a guy she has a thing for when he is engaged to a woman she doesn't like. Like all best laid plans, things didn't happen the way she had hoped. Paul is known as a playboy, but the woman he has been picturing naked and preferably under him, is Dedra and he doesn't want to lose a great assistant. Little does he know she no longer works for him. Anja Karmanski is playing matchmaker after seeing her mom’s high hopes for her and Paul while she wants to remain single. Not to mention her good friend Dedra's feelings for the guy. There's nothing wrong with a little push to get the ball rolling for Paul and Dedra, right?
I enjoyed this book. I will say I wish it was a bit longer. I love it with short books when the characters have background history.
Dedra is your quiet, shy type of girl. Never a take what you want girl until Anja talked her into finally giving into her inner most fantasies and desires.
The Karmanskis are quite a character of ladies. Anja won't bend to her moms will and she sees how Dedra feels for Paul so decides to give the inevitable a push in her own way.
Paul is a strong man with business ethics up the wazoo. For such a playboy, he won't take what he wants, that is until she shows up offering what he can't say no to. Until that moment he realizes he is more alive with Dedra than ever before.
I enjoyed the novella but wasn’t amazed by it. I do wish it was longer because I was looking forward to a little more of Paul and Dedra. I really want a story for Anja. I kind of hope she gets with Paul’s brother. The passion once it hit for Dedra and Paul was pretty steamy and I got swoony for them at the end. I will check out the next installment to see what these ladies have in store for us all. It was a cute, sweet read with a little humor and some quirky relatives I'm sure we all can relate too. I am a fan of Weber's previous work and still am with this read.
This was a quick, flirty and steamy read that was good to relax with for just under an hour. It's perfect for a break from what you are doing but I wasn't blown away by it. The romance is a standard secretary-falls-for-her-boss and although I don't mind predictable romances I felt this one could have been so much more with the addition of the 'witches' in the cafe.
There were a lot of questions I needed answering about the witches and I felt their part was under described considering their importance in getting Dedra and Paul together--what they did needed further description too. I found that because of the lack of detail the writing just felt slightly disjointed as you never really learn who people are or why they are like that.
The parts with Paul and Dedra were steamy and crafted better. I liked the speech between the two as it flowed well and did give a good sense of the character's personality. However, for me the ending wasn't what I wanted. Because the witches aren't explained in detail I found myself not caring about them in the epilogue and I didn't really see reason for it. I would have liked it do end on a note about the relationship with Paul and Dedra and sum some things up.
Overall, it's a good quick read to break up time and OK for a freebie, I just feel parts need more development as I need more than just sex in a book and this had the potential to do that.
Dedra Hanson has always made the smart, sensible decisions. Deciding to leave her current position as administrative assistant to sexy CEO Paul Chastain is no exception. She is smart enough to know that she cannot watch him enter a loveless marriage. However, she can’t leave without knowing what she’s missing out on. So she takes matters into her own hands (with a little magical help from a friend) for one night before she moves back to Chicago. However, that one night might ruin (or perfect) the rest of her life.
This is short, delicious read. It features a hot romance, delicious desserts and lovely ending. What more could you ask for (besides a sequel)? Sugar & Spice is a fun way to spend an hour. Being a novella, it is too short to get to know the characters well, but they are all likeable and you hope they make the right decisions. Dedra and Paul have excellent chemistry and I kept hoping they’d wake up and realize how they felt about each other. Left to themselves, they definitely never would have made a move. It is up to Dedra’s friend Anja to use magical means to give them a push in the right direction. But will it be enough? And will it prevent Dedra from moving back to Chicago. Take an hour and find out – I promise it is a lot of fun.
Oh my...I have found another little series to fall in love with. It's magical, fairy tale-esque, and sweet. Weber's Sugar and Spice had everything. It's a great short read, filled with nice little twists and turns. Paul and Dedra were so cute. this novella is quite sexy, with all the elements needed for a good romance. I wish it was longer. There is so much going on, and I want to know more. Paul Chastain finds himself in a situation that requires him to give up his playboy ways to retain control of his family business. Little did he know that his little assistant, Dedra Hanson, whom he depended on for everything, would throw a curveball his way. Weber's secondary characters were intriguing, especially Anja Karmanski. The secondary storyline of Peter Chastain, Paul's brother, and Sylvia Bittle is one I want to know more about too. I can't wait to see what happens in the next set of novellas. I need to find them now. I really enjoyed this Cinderella story. It's not your momma's fairy tale :)
Sugar and Spice: A Karma Cafe novella by Tawny Weber is a sweet and sexy little story. This was a fun read. A little bit of magic, a touch of Cinderella and a lot of hot and sexy loving between two people who had worked together for several years. Paul Chastain and his personal assistant, Dedra had worked together side by side for several years. They worked well together; but it was all about to change. Paul was being forced by his board of directors to settle down and become respectable. He thought he could do it with another company's president by merging both their business and their personal lives. Dedra knew that she had a crush on her boss or was it more? She also knew that after he got married that she would have to leave. She couldn't continue to work there for him when he was married to some one else. With a little help from Anja, some new lingerie and a little magic they will both get their happily ever after.
I JUST WANT A LITTLE MORE TIME WITH THEM.....THAT'S ALL
This is a wonderful, sultry little story that ends with happily ever after for the protagonists. It starts with tears, and ends with a beginning - although this pair of people are on their way to forever together, there are at least two more pairs to be fixed. Paul has let his company rule his life. Because the people on it want him to be responsible, he has been as irresponsible as possible without hurting his company. But the latest from them is too much: get married, or else. Choice one: lady in chief a good company to merge with. Why not make it a double merger? Other than he hates the idea. His longtime assistant thinks it's so bad, she has decided to leave instead of watching the disaster that will ensue. But she ends up having one last conversation..... And therein hangs the tail. Yummy.
It was a really short and quick read. The story didn't suffer because of the length. From the synopsis it sounded kind of confusing but basically the Karma Café is run by three generations of Karmaski women. The mother is trying to play matchmaker for her daughter to the hero of the story, Paul, but the daughter wants nothing to do with it. Then she notices that one of the regular costumers, Dedra, who is the heroine of the story is secretly in love with her boss, the hero. So she in turns plays matchmaker to Dedra and try to give Dedra her HEA, thus thwarting her mother's own matchmaking. Is it still confusing? Well, just read it yourself. You'll understand what I'm trying to say and you'll like it as well.
Such a Cute novella. This is about Dedra, the executive assistant of Paul Chastain of Chastain shoes. This is also about Paul Chastain, a man who believes he has to marry an icy bitch who will help keep his business from going under. What he doesn't realize is that his assistant Dedra, a woman he would never be able to do without, has plans of her own for him. This is a comedy of errors and hot sex and you will LOVE IT!
This was an okay book. There were some story inconsistencies and a few mistakes from the author but nothing that I couldn't have gotten over if the story was more than a complete turnaround from an actual story like then suddenly nothing. It went from good story to hot sexy sex to a reunion that made no sense.
I liked the parts of the story featuring the Karmanski women, especially Anja. The central love story of Dedra and Paul was just ok. There was a hot sex scene, but most of their story was pretty cliche. This was a pretty short novella, only took about an hour to read.
Sweet, fast paced story filled with family drama, hidden attraction, humor, heat and a little bit of magic! The storyline is really cute, moves along smoothly and the characters are well described and believable. It was a quick read but an enthralling journey to find love that makes you smile.
Sexy quick read that makes you smile! She's loved him forever but now he's marrying someone else. She's decided she needs to leave but before she does she needs to just one to remember! Will one night be enough? I recommend to read this one and find out!
I actually give this more of a 3.5. It was cute and all. I think the shop girl's POV was unnecessary but maybe it ties in with another book that I'm unaware of. I think it didn't really flow with the story adding in "magic" or at least implied magic.
I like this story. The fact that they realize they love each other before making mistakes that can't be changed. The epilogue leads into the next book so if your just interested in this story skip it.
quick, page turner of a novella with witches brewing up match making mischief and sexy designer shoes! Looks like a fun start to a series I intend to follow up on!
This story was just silly . Debra spent 6 pages or more rambling on about how and why she couldn't date Paul then goes off the subject for a page only to start over again. It seemed that was the basis of the book. I consider it mostly a waste of time.
This was a fun HOT little novella! Dedra is the "plain" PA who is in love with her boss. Add a little Sugar and Spice and Dedra finds her confidence to become the inner vixen she wants to be! Fun fun fun!
