Kate Malick’s first calling was as a Carmelite nun, a life devoted to prayer and faith. Now she runs a Hollywood security service dedicated to protecting its clients. But Kate’s most troublesome client, teenage celebutante Chelsea Brewer, is a walking, talking, slow-motion train wreck who’s testing that devotion. The poster child for the pitfalls of childhood fame and fortune, Chelsea careens from one party to the next, riding the ragged edge between celebrity…and fatality.

When a huge bet is placed on her impending demise, Chelsea disappears, forcing Kate to leap into action. Searching Hollywood’s darkest corners and seediest hiding places in a desperate attempt to find her client, Kate uncovers a tangled conspiracy of revenge and betrayal. But time is running out, and if Kate doesn’t find Chelsea, the bet will leave one person rich, one woman shattered, and one young girl dead. Flying at a breakneck pace and full of unrelenting tension, Grave of Angels journeys full-tilt into the dark side of fame.

2.0 out of 5 stars - Disappointing and unbelievable

I read a lot of books -- usually one every other day -- and I review about half of those titles so I think of myself as a bit of a discriminating reader. I do love suspense thrillers, mysteries, and what I call the psycho killer chiller novel. Although I had high hopes with the premise: a former Carmelite nun is now head of security and protection for movie stars and the like, it ended up disappointing me in many ways. Kate is hired to protect a teenage movie star, Chelsea Brewer, and when Chelsea is kidnapped by a deranged hired killer, she pulls out all stops to find her. The revelations of the conspiracy and the revenge motives are only thinly plausible.

The main character, Kate Malick, is a carbon copy conglomerate of all the other series that feature a female in a cop, detective, body guard, FBI agent, or other similar role. Her back story isn't anything new and she really isn't that interesting. Her sidekicks and associates -- well it doesn't matter -- dead bodies litter the pages of this novel like roadkill along a busy highway. The violence and over-the-top gruesome description of the killer's sadistic side really turned me off. I'm not squeamish (as no one who has read and enjoyed Michael Slade could be) but the details of what I felt were unnecessary deaths gave this narrative a "try too hard" tone. Many times I had to completely suspend disbelief as scene after scene unfolded with the bad guy getting the jump on everyone but our heroine.

The author is a former screenwriter and this book does read like a movie script. I am not sure if this novel is "new" or if it has been updated and revised from a previously released book (pay phones???) but I can't say that I'd urge anyone to go and buy it.

I am a Michael Prescott fan! I have read almost all of his books, and the couple I have not read are in my "to be read" list. So, I like all of his books - but to be fair I like some more than others. This one is somewhere in the middle of the pack. I think he does a good job of interweaving the story and characters to make you think you have it all figured out, but do you?? I like that. He is also a master of the "ah-ha" moment, which literally made me gasp!! I like the premise/plot... but I was annoyed by the character of the "Celebutant" Chelsea. (I listened to the audio book via Audible and this may have had more to do with the narrator than the author)! Some of the relationships also seemed a little far-fetched, but it’s also part of what makes it all come together… so, I guess crazier things have happened! It is a work of fiction, after – all! I try not to over think what I read – I like to take the story for what it is and go with it! It doesn’t have to be logical, it just has to be entertaining, and this was! Like many Prescott books, it has the pace of an episode of “24” and the main character in this book, Kate, is the “Olivia Pope” (Scandal) of the personal security world. If you avoid graphic content, avoid this… I do think some of it was overkill (pun intended)! Overall, it kept me interested. It makes for a thrilling read!

This was a hard, harsh mystery thriller. While it may have featured a female protagonist, it was anything but soft or emotional. This story was all about the action.

I didn’t really like the characters, with the exception of Di Milo and Grange, two of Kate’s employees. They were the only characters with depth, and so felt the most real and deserving of emotion. Kate is not a good girl heroine in any way. She has a dark past and isn’t afraid to use threats or force to get what she wants. I found her very hard to like, and her history as a nun is almost dispicable.

The bad guy is a stereotypical ultimate evil villian. He has no conscience and no respect for other people. Truly evil and scary, his threats are very real, which does lend a sense of danger to the story.

Overall, I found the story to be focused on the action, with little thought given to the characters. While this usually makes a decent action movie, it falls flat on paper. While the plot does have some twists and turns, the ending is a bit ridiculous. Perhaps a male reader who isn’t interested in the emotional aspect of a story would enjoy this more than I did.

This was a pretty good psychological mystery/thriller. Good Narration by Joyce Bean. (audible review)

I enjoyed this book, it kept me listening and entertained. It was easy to follow along and not get confused. It all flowed very well and there was a lot of dialogue throughout the entire book.

I really liked Kate Malick's character. Yeah, she wasn't a very good nun. LOL She was smart and subtle with the quick wit. The bad guy did kill a lot of people in this book. He was really bad. Someone complained about the F bomb getting dropped a lot. There were several times it was dropped but considering the genre of the book it is absolutely expected/required. Had this bad guy not been cussing it would have made this book stupid. So in my opinion, thank for those F bombs!

As for the narration, it was very good. I really liked it. The men sounded like men and Kate's voice was awesome. Everyone got their own distinct voice and she read with emotion as called for. Her reading voice is nice too.

I could just picture a movie of this book with Angeline Jolie in the title role- running through dark buildings, driving wild car chases and facing down the killer in a spooky, abandoned building. Grave of Angels by Michael Prescott is a wild ride indeed.

Kate Malick is an ex-nun who runs a security agency for starts. One of her most troublesome stars is a wunderkind, just out of her teens, whose parents have exploited her talent for all its worth, and who spends her life bouncing from one drug-filled dance floor to another. (Hmm, I wonder who the model for this character is…) Kate has the fortune, or misfortune of trying to provide security for the brat. When Chelsea gets kidnapped, Kate flies into a desperate race to save the life of her client from a brutal sadist who leaves a trail of mutilated bodies behind him.

There are lots of cliches in this book—the bratty starlet turns out to be a scared child underneath the glitz who just wants her parents to love her, for instance, and the wind up at the end seems kind of strained as the writer tries to tie up all the loose ends into a pretty little interconnected bow. Nevertheless, I enjoyed this book and found it perfect for a cozy read on a cold fall afternoon.

Kate used to be nun, but didn’t really fit in at the convent, so now she’s security for celebs. At the moment her work is focused on Chelsea, a teen star with an attitude. Everything comes to a head and lasts for many chapters when Chelsea is kidnapped by a hit man.

Too much gratuitous violence and gruesome, detailed descriptions of torture and killing. I’m a thriller lover, but not like this and I don’t think it’s necessary.

The main character, a former nun, was a chance for some new and different scenarios, but mostly this was run of the mill stuff and nothing unique.

I know this author has a lot of steadfast fans, so maybe this isn’t one of his better works. Or maybe I’m missing something, but it was too dark and gory for me.

Fast paced thriller

5 stars is just what this book deserved. Swann is a psycho stalker that has no problems hurting and killing people. But when you have a banished ex-nun on your heels its makes for a real juicy story!

Not my usual reading material

Not a bad book, just a little too much violence for me. The ending was great, so glad I finished the book. Took me longer to read this one. Can't explain why. I am one of those people that has to finish what I start especially books and movies.

Suspenseful

This is a really good book. I went between reading and listening the audio version. The twists and turns in the plot will keep you on the edge of your seat. If you want a good thriller this is it.

I normally really like his books but not this one. It was so far fetched. "Really?!" Was my response to most of the plot twists. The actual flow of the book was smooth. No jarring typos. Over all not a bad way to spend four hours.

Kate Malick is the owner of Guardian Angels, a security firm that serves high-profile celebrities. One of her more colorful clients is Chelsea Brewer who is a 21-year-old star on the road to self-destruction. When a large bet is placed at a website that takes bets on when celebrities will die and Chelsea is kidnapped that evening, Kate is on the case. Kate is also on the case of the runaway daughter of her secret lover - fading movie star Carson Banning. And to add even more excitement, Kate is receiving death threats and is being followed by someone who wants to kill her. She thinks it is the ex-husband she abandoned by the side of the road in the desert after he beat her when she was nineteen.

This is a story with a really twisted villain named Jack Swann who is one scary dude. He was a previous partner in crime with Chelsea's less than ideal father Sam. Swann is a murderer, a psycopath, and a control freak. He was hired by the father of one of Chelsea's gal pals who died as a result of the partying. That father thinks Chelsea should pay - with her life - for the heartbreak she brought on his family.

Chelsea's mother is her agent and seems to only be interested in Chelsea for the 25% she gets from each contract. She is a master of denial and refuses to believe Chelsea has been kidnapped at first. Once she finally realizes that the kidnapping is real, she does seem to want her back. But I was left wondering if it was because of love or money. Chelsea's father is a petty criminal who has sponged off her and her mother for years. He is completely selfish and doesn't care for her at all. I felt really sorry for Chelsea even while I thought she was making bad choices in her life. Her one friend seems to be her poodle Chanticleer and Swann kills it shortly after kidnapping her.

None of the characters in the story story were particularly admirable people. Because of the number of viewpoint characters - Kate, Swann, Chelsea and Sam, we got a chance to get to know them and know what motivated them. The story had a very cinematic feel. I could imagine this one as a movie. Maybe something Quentin Tarantino would do.

If you are looking for a gritty mystery about the perils of celebrity and the sorts of people who want it, this is the story for you. The writing is engaging and colorful. The characters are realistically drawn in shades of gray.

This was one of those books I downloaded, and then read weeks later. So, when it came time to read it, I had no idea what I was reading. That can be a good thing. Then there are no early perceptions and misconceptions about what a book will be about, where it will lead, or how good it will be. The mind is more open.
I liked it. I was surprised by it. It was fast and dirty. It pissed me off at times. I mean, really? You separate from the client that you just SAVED from the bad guy, in a neighborhood you don't know? Oh, and the poor yappy little dog. *sniff*
One would think this former nun turned security for the stars has a death wish. Maybe. She see's herself in her client. Try's to get through the head of the parents and the client herself. The ending, a bit "Hollywood" happily ever after. A couple twists the average reader might not see coming. Overall, I'm not going to complain much for the price I paid. And, I'd consider reading other books by Michael Prescott.

An Amazon Vine book.

How many ways can we say formulaic, textbook thriller?

Troubled celebrity teen, uncaring parents, stalker who loves violence for its own sake, and so forth. Anyone who has read more than a few thrillers could fill in the blanks from there, except for the unnecessary sadism with which the main villain has been endowed.

The only interesting element was protagonist Kate Malick, a former Carmelite nun, who now has a bodyguard agency. Kate has an ongoing (albeit very occasional) quest to know if God exists which did not surface enough or get examined enough to be truly interesting. I give the author points for not using it as an excuse to defame the Catholic Church or faith. That isn't enough to make this book worth my time, however.

My true rating of this book is more like 3 1/2 stars. I picked this book up for an afternoon read, and before I knew it, several hours had passed, it was dark outside, and I had finished the book. This was the first book I'd read by Michael Prescott, but it won't be the last.

The basic plot is: former nun turned bodyguard for the celebrities is on the case when a teenage star is kidnapped by a psychopath. The bad guy reminded me of some of the similar types found in earlier Dean Koontz novels - sick, sadistic, twisted, and believes he's all-powerful. Violence is plentiful, but not over the top, and the characters might not be completely believable, but enough so that I lost myself in the book for an entire afternoon.

In the blurb it says that this deals with Hollywoods underbelly and it certainly does that. Ex nun Kate Mallick has been hired to protect teenage superstar Chelsea Brewer. Chelsea is hell on legs and protecting her is no mean feat. Then Chelsea is kidnapped and Kate goes on a breathless ride to find her. The action is non stop and the ending a surprise. I really liked this book. The reason I have given it 4 stars rather than 5
is that there are a couple of sexual descriptions which I thought were unnecessary.

Ex-Nun sleuth. Feisty, slutty, trusting? Someone this canny agrees to meet her "boyfriend" for sex in car garages because he's worried about the papparazzi? Entertaining but stupid. I'd go as high as 2.5 but's it's not available. I think this whole thing should have a separate ranking system one for trash and one for life altering fiction. How are you supposed to compare Dick Francis (who I loved in his early days) to Harper Lee or J.D. Salinger?

I expected this book to be great from this book based on a lot of reviews I've read but was a little disappointed. The suspense started immediately but the book never fully grabbed my attention. It was another book to read to pass time, not anything that I couldn't put down. I did like how the author changed characters every chapter reading it from their point of view.

From what I read already, Michael Prescott's books are entertaining, with a nice suspense. However, I can't point my finger to it exactly, but something's missing. Some depth, richness of details and research maybe. Or maybe it's just that the characters are not detailed enough. I can't seem to get attached to them.

Another Prescott good read.

I'm not sure whether I like Kate or Abby more. Prescott writes good heroines and interesting plots. This book had some interesting plot twists to keep the reader interested. I wish he would develop the characters a bit more. The only characters we really get to know here are Kate and the main bad guy Jack.

This was OK, but nothing special. One nice, unexpected touch at the end. I was disappointed that the main character was not, contrary to the advertising, an ex-Carmelite nun; she belonged to a different order entirely. Probably a small detail to most readers, but I don't appreciate being misled.
