99 Lives: Cats in History, Legend and Literature

Rate this book
Beautifully illustrated and intriguing to read, 99 Lives offers something new about the beloved cat—a cultural history in which we meet legendary figures of the feline kingdom through the ages and around the world. Brimming with cat lore, myth, and history, this fascinating ramble through the ages takes the cat's eye view of such notable times and cultures as ancient Egypt, medieval Europe, and czarist Russia. We learn the stories of 99 particular cats of great distinction and renown-from Oscar, a World War II seafaring cat, to the Siamese honored at the coronation of the King of Siam. We also meet ordinary, real-life cats who have done extraordinary things, like Josie, who warned her owners of a coming earthquake. More than 140 images by esteemed artists and photographers capture the enigmatic feline personality and make this a richly enjoyable celebration. Cat owners may well recognize shades of their own cats in the pages of this delightful book, perfect for everyone whose imagination has been caught by the cat's supreme self-possession, sensuality, and mystery.

Apparently I’ve read enough cat books that I already know some of these stories. I’ll be honest there are just other better cat books out there. 2.5 stars.

This a clever, playful, artful presentation of global cat lore that is respectful and never silly. I enjoyed it a lot, half due to the rich blend of mini-tales, and half due to the art galley of images from all times and places.

interesting facts about cats, both in general and specific individuals.
Chapters are Personalities, A Cat's Life, Cats on Location, Cats of Make-Believe and Magic. There are lots of good illustrations. Recommended for cat lovers. Sometimes a few more details would be helpful.

A fun and easy read with lots of pictures, however, it has an undeniable Anglocentric/Western cultural emphasis and could have been decidedly improved with a bibliography.

Also, bonus points for leading me to learn about Pythagorean philosophy, but deductions for referring to it as Pythagorean theory resulting in unnecessary confusion about what connections mathematical theory had to do with cats. (As far as I can tell, no connection AND no intended connection.)

Barnes and Nobles brand books know how to do it. Filled with facts and90s style graphic design, this book is fun and informative and a nice hit of nostalgia for me. Why are there additional facts in the back numbered 1-99 throughout the book? Idk. Someone probably thought it was cool. I enjoyed it. The only thing wanting was a sort of conclusion.
