The Familiars #3

Circle of Heroes

Rate this book
Can the familiars bring magic back to the queendom?

Vastia is in a state of war. Led by the evil Paksahara, whose command of the Shifting Fortress gives her nearly unstoppable power, an army of undead animals is wreaking havoc on the queendom. With human magic still gone, it's up to the three prophesized familiars--Aldwyn, Skylar, and Gilbert--to capture the fortress and bring Paksahara down.

But it won't be easy. The three familiars must embark on a quest to gather seven descendants of the most ancient and powerful animals in Vastia. And to make matters worse, Aldwyn finds a troubling scroll that causes him to doubt the very truth of the prophecy that guides them.

With inventive magic, epic action, and laugh-out-loud humor bursting from every page, circle of heroes is an extraordinary adventure you won't want to see end.

I grew up in Great Neck, NY loving all things fantasy and science fiction - from Dungeons and Dragons and the Legend of Zelda to Star Wars and Dr. Strange. I created and imagined new worlds and stories from an early age but never knew that I had the talent to be a writer until seventh grade, when my English teacher assigned our class to write the first ten pages of a sequel to The Good Earth. After that, I was hooked.

I now live in Los Angeles with my wife, two children and a black and white alley cat with a bite out of his ear. I write with a partner, Andrew Jacobson, who is a much better typist than I will ever be.

When the humans have their magic taken away, it falls to the prophesized familiars--Aldwyn, Skylar and Gilbert--to put down Paksahara, the villainous rabbit who is terrorizing Vastia through her control of the Shifting Fortress. In the second volume, the zombie army resurrected by Paksahara advances. This book opens with that army already destroying everything as it grows in size and moves across the landscape. (To be honest, the adult-me doesn't care much for this army of animal zombies. I'm thinking the child-me wouldn't have liked them much either, but--with all the zombie/vampire TV/movies out there--today's kids probably will eat it up.)

So, to capture the Shifting Fortress commanded by Paksahara, the trio must procure a collection of animals, each a descendant of the seven species that formed the First Phylum. Surrounding any of the three glyphstones could beacon the Shifting Fortress. But the zombie army is destroying glyphstones as quickly as possible, so rounding up the collection is a task that must be completed as quickly as possible and is accompanied by the risk of meeting the growing number of zombies summoned by Paksahara.

This book completes the deeds prophesied for the trio's heroic feats and returns them to their human companions, but the conclusion certainly looks forward to more adventures for Aldwyn, Skylar, and Gilbert.

I really enjoyed this book, but just didn't feel it was a very satisfactory conclusion to the story arc that encompassed this and the previous two novels. The ending crept up a bit too fast, as if making up for the slower pacing of the first two installments. I also didn't like the cliffhanger; more books are great, but it was so vague that I have no clue what to expect or if I'll think it's worth giving a shot.

Vastia è in guerra.

A voi scoprirlo!

This is the third book in the Familiars series! As usual, the characters are fun and the adventure is super big and exciting. :)

This book is surprisingly MUCH more violent compared to the other two, not that I am complaining! I actually had some good laughs because of it! I know it’s only rotting zombies who are getting slaughtered and massacred, but I laughed out LOUD at the violence on page 12, where the bear zombie explodes and pieces of its fur and flesh spray everywhere – even covering Gilbert with it. YES, THAT'S RIGHT KIDS! Flesh sprays EVERYWHERE! And all over Gilbert! I still laugh just thinking about it, it was so awesomely unexpected! I’ve never read such disgusting violence in a children’s book before!

A lot of different scenes and things happen in this book, between meeting TONS of new characters and remembering what everyone is suppose to do and where to go got a little confusing. Paying really close attention to this story is a must! Because it’s easy to get lost in the epic events. ;)

One of my favorite parts in the story was Gilbert’s puddle viewing about Skylar... Wow, every chapter had me on the edge of my seat, wondering if THAT vision would really happen...! I also liked it when Grimslayer

This was an awesome trilogy to read, and I shall definitely read the sequel.

I had a bit of a shaky start with this one because it'd been so long since I read the "Secrets of the Crown" and I couldn't remember how it ended off! That said, I like and have great respect for stories that don't have to start off with "Once upon a time..." but can jump right into the middle of a story and this one did that.

I think this book is better than the others. It really seems to be coming together! I love that the characters are growing and that they are flawed, rather than perfect. That's even more encouraging to see in a Young Adult novel, where it would be so easy to just make the characters perfect and never make mistakes . But this book doesn't do that and it's better for it.

This book was one big adventure from the very beginning and it sucked me right in. I barely even noticed how dark it was getting while reading outside!

I look forward to seeing what happens in the next book because even when there's a single, larger story at work, the authors are very good at weaving in side stories and character backgrounds and development along the way.

This continuation of the story of the three familiars--Aldwyn, Skylar, and Gilbert--follows them as they try to survive treachery, war in Vastia, and Paksahara, whose lust for power, more power, leaves her almost out of control. Readers will enjoy the humor and affection among the animals and those with whom they are allied and look for even more adventures. They'll also love those savory, descriptive zombie scenes.

Tu povera donna debole e indifesa???

It really bothers me when authors don't stick to what they've written in previous books of a series. In "Secrets of the Crown," Gilbert asks Hepsibah how the wolverines found the Aviary because he didn't see it when he was standing right in front of it. Hepsibah responds that they have supernatural senses and have the ability to see through illusions. A bit later, Lothar reached through the mother quail's illusion and grabbed her, and told her "your illusions won't protect you from us."

In "Circle of Heroes," when the familiars needed a wolverine for one of the seven descendants, Skylar cast an illusion spell of Paksahara aboard her flying stallion and all of the wolverines fell for it, and when it vanished, Lothar was confused. Later, in this same book, the familiars are trying to cross a battlefield with the descendants and Skylar states, "I could cast another illusion, but the wolverines would smell right through it." Then again, towards the end, Skylar casts another illusion to draw attention away from them, but Lothar still finds them because he is not fooled by illusions.

I've read other books in which authors conveniently forget what they've written just so they can twist the story the way they want. I can forgive bad grammar, but not forgetting your storyline.

I really liked this series. I don’t think it’s anything special though. It’s a book I’d recommend but if you didn’t read it I don’t think you’d be missing anything in your life.

There are parts that were a little redundant and parts that lasted way too long. Other parts just didn’t make sense.

Aldwyn isn’t that special and neither is Jack. I don’t know why Jack is the absolute world to aldwyn.

The trio is basically just like Harry Potter.
1. The untalented comedic relief
2. The smart studying always prepared one
3. The bland main character also the chosen one probably

Gilbert isn’t funny. I know humor is subjective but all he jokes about is bugs. I personally don’t care about the “delicious beetle” he ate.

I was surprised by how much I liked this book. A blue jay, an alley cat, and a tree frog have to work together to find seven magical animals in order to overcome Paksahara's spell which took all magic from the humans.

The animals talk to each other and to other animals. They have a map and a magical snout to help them. At least two of the animals they have to find do not get along with each other.

Some of the animals do not want humans to have their magic back as they fear the humans will rule them again and they like their freedom. The familiars like their humans and hope they will see them at the end of their quest.

To find out what happens, read the book.

Since Mr. Epstein doesn't seem to have a "Contact" option on his website, here are the editing oversights which I found in the Hardcover version of Circle Of Heroes:

Page 89, Yes, ma'am, coming ma'am / Yes, ma'am, coming, ma'am (add comma after "coming") ; 257, Do you have any idea the fortune this cost? / Do you have any idea OF the fortune this cost? ; 324, "Here, here!" / "HEAR, HEAR!"

I was going to bust the author's chops about using prophesize, prophesized, and prophesizing, but I found a website that says these are acceptable, mainly due to popular confusion between PROPHECY (noun) and PROPHESY (verb). So, no chop-busting today.

I thought this book was amazing! My favorite part was the first of it, when the three familiars work together with the animal hunter, and the descriptions of the zombie animals were amazing. My favorite character in this is Aldwin, he is a black and white cat. The way he takes lead, and helps out, it is amazing to me. A major theme in this book might be zombie apocalypse, with animals saving the day. My least favorite character in this book is Paksahara. She is an evil white rabbit, and is controlling the zombie apocalypse.

My favorite part was when the familiars defeated Paksahara. My least favorite part was when Orion was the one who was the traitor. At least he was only the traitor because of the brick from the bridge of betrayal and didn't even really know he was the traitor. That was probably the most surprising part. I hope that in the next book Aldwyn finds his sister. It was sad when Simeon died near the end of the book.

As with the rest of the Familiars series, this was a good book! I’m so into zombie stuff, and I loved Paksahara’s dead army. The introduction of the seven descendents was cool. I enjoyed learning about all their powers. The way Galleon got his powers back and the way Aldwyn discovered his telepathy seemed too forced and easy, though. My favorite quote was from Aldwyn: “‘Tell him there’s a reason he was never able to catch me.’” That’s such a power line.

What I didn't like in the book?
1) I felt like I didn't get to know the characters that well.
2) I wanted more of the magic explained
3) the map was not believable. I tried to follow the map but was getting lost to where the characters were going.

What I liked in the book?
1) I liked Gilbert's character.
2) I liked the humor in this book.
3) I liked the villain and I liked his motive.
4) It reminds me of Harry Potter and is a quest story.

Third in the series, and neither my 7-yr-old nor me were all that into this anymore. There are too many characters to keep up with, and a journey that just keeps going. Also, I'm amused that the authors created a "lucky toad" that makes everything just work out perfectly - a modern-day deux ex machina.

This novel has been the darker of the three so far, with the battle against the Dead Army being at the forefront of the conflict. Some of the details get into rotten flesh and breaking bones, as the Dead Army is comprised of zombie animals, but my six-year-old didn't mind at all. If your children enjoyed books one and two, they will enjoy three.
