Although Gretel may be clever, this story really wasn't for me.
Gretel is a cook who has been told by her master to cook two chickens for him and his guest, who are late arriving. And so, Gretel decides she must eat the chickens herself, and enjoy her hard cooked meal. The problem? How to hide it from her master and his guest?
This really wasn't one for me. I found it quite boring, and although Gretel really was clever, it was an eye roll to read. I didn't find it funny at all, nor entertaining. Perhaps this was one of those that you need a more child like sense of humour to enjoy.
Two and a half stars because it was clever, and thought was obviously put into it.

it's funny, but i think it is not suitable to a child
the alcoholic girl who eat a lot after drinking and her master who invite a guest to eat but Gretel finish all the food before his arrival and tell the guest to run away as her master will eat him!
i don't really know what is the moral!

Ha ha !
A very rare comedy by the Brothers Grimm… and fantastic !
Also gives some interesting historical tidbits, like the sharpening of kitchen knives on a stone staircase, and the female cook calling her employer “master”. Perhaps the first fairytale featuring a female alcoholic protagonist.
And now the question : is this the same Gretel who pushes the witch into the oven to save brother Hansel in the gingerbread house? If so, she’s very clever indeed !

The protagonist Gretel devoured two whole chickens and then deceived the man and his guest.
I really wonder what would happen if the man and the guest actually spoke to each other again and cleared up the misunderstanding caused by Gretel. She would be in trouble.
It's not moral. She's not a moral character and I did not particularly care for her. I think perhaps this would have been meant to be a bit of fun for the working class, who like Gretel had to labour for the wealthy.
Gretel is a rarity for the Grimms. She is a female protagonist who is immoral yet wins. She's also not ridiculously villainised like a witch or stepmother.
I do wish I liked her more but I didn't particularly care.

For the month of October, the month of all Hallows Eve, I promised myself to only read Horror books and tales. What better way to celebrate than to read at least on Grimm Fairytale a day. I have the whole collection from the Grimm Brothers and I have been working my way through each year, each October. This year I shall try and finish this book collection.
Rightfully named. There could not have been a more perfect name for this story. Gretel, who is like a maiden preparing dinner for her master. Eats his chickens and blames it on his guest, causing him to go stop the thief. Little to his knowledge it was gretel who ate the chickens and has now lied to him causing him to commit murder and she sits content with it. Brilliant story.

The original tale is much better but also darker then the version kids see.
It is different but not that different from what you might remember from first hearing this tale as a kid.
The plot here are very good but also dark which is the mix which I personally like a lot.
The writing style here was very old and you could feel the vibe of old the Europe which was amazing for me.
