Pierre Sabbagh (18 July 1918 – 30 September 1994) was a major personality in French television, as a journalist, producer and director.

Pierre Alain Sabbagh was born in Lannion (Côtes-d'Armor) and died in Paris. He was the younger son of the artist Georges Hanna Sabbagh and the art historian and resistance heroine Agnès Humbert.

I love that the back of this book compares Fanina to Amber & Angelique, but with Fanina unsurpassed for her amorous intrigues & sweeping historical backdrop. Whoever wrote that blurb was on their game; it's the sort of advertisement that would pique a certain type of reader. That said, this installment remains the world's single source of Fanina-antics. If the author(s) intended to string this 300-page novel into a series of adventures...well, who knows. She might have become as legendary as Amber & Angelique, though it wouldn't be for the same reasons.

You must understand, dear reader, that Fanina is really, really dumb.

Despite a vast education & Vestal-bestowed acumen, she's an adorably dim bulb. The last couple chapters show a slight upswing -- not so much in action, for she still doesn't DO anything, but at least she displays the "gosh, I shouldn't touch that stove again!" SMRTs of an average toddler. Nobody will ever confuse Fanina with Lara Croft. I can't picture Fanina overthrowing any historical regimes, nor do I see her strapping on a crossbow & sneaking through the harem to eliminate a dastardly monarch after unlocking the secret door to his treasure vault. I do, however, imagine her dancing around the room & chanting "I'm actually a Vestal Virgin, oh snap!", thereby driving her conquests to jump off a cliff from shame at having 'deflowered' her for the twentieth time. (Mission accomplished! Who shall I topple next week?! :D)

That said, she's not an unlikable heroine. She has a certain charm -- the sort of girl who makes you sigh & shake your head at her lack of insight, but you're still glad she was swept into the protective circle of someone smarter than she is. She can have no better match than Caius Vindex -- a truly useless hero if ever I've read one (& perfectly suited to the visuals of Orlando Bloom in Troy), but he's devoted to the poor brainless lass. Caius finally makes a stab at heroics in the last chapters (bless his heart)...but most of his actions are off-screen, so we're taking the word of secondary characters.

Indeed, the secondaries are the best part of FANINA. Our leading couple is straight forward -- a pair of simpletons trying their damnedest to navigate the big, scary world of Ancient Rome. The supporting cast, however, had some enjoyable hooks. I'd have enjoyed reading more about Horo, the mute-and-deformed dwarf badass with the face of a Greek god...or Sejanus, the treason-plotting emperor wannabe with an unfortunate weakness for female flesh...or Vibidia, the long-suffering head Vestal who tries to balance old & new regimes on a daily basis...or Hemonia, the fiesty old nursemaid who will do anything to protect her beloved Fanina from harm.

This was a fun read -- not earth-shattering, but enjoyable. The plot whirls madly from one situation to another, tossing Fanina between forced chastity, orgies, treasonous lovers, castles, sedan chairs, graveyards, fortune tellers, & underground crypts. The historical background wasn't always very deep, but the brutalities of Roman life aren't glossed -- there are some violent, bloody scenes in this one -- and the interplay of Vestals & Roman society was interesting.

3 stars. I'd have read other installments, but I can't give it 4 stars; there just wasn't enough connection with the leading couple to boost the rating.

في روما قديما إعتاد الكهنة عند موت إحدى راهبات فيستا الست على جمع أجمل بنات روما التي تترواح أعمارهن من 6 إلى 10 سنوات و إختيار بينهن على من تحمل لقب راهبة فيستا التي تهب ثلاثين عاماً من عمرها لخدمة و الحفاظ النار المقدسة مشتعلة داخل معبد فيستا إلهة المواقد لأن انطفاءها يعني دمار اللامبراطورية الرومانية

فانينا ذات الشعر الذهبي بطلة الرواية هي إحدى بنات النبلاء في روما و التي أختيرت كراهبة فيستا بناء ا على توصية الإمبراطور تيبر لكهنة المعبد .سيكون كل شيء بخير إلى أن تبلغ 16 سنة حيث تلتقي الراهبة الشاب كايوس فيندكس من غالة يقلب كيانها و تقع في حبه فتخرق أحد شروط المعبد الصارمة في المحافظة على طهارتها و عفتها و أن تتنازل على حقوقها الإجتماعية كالزواج و الإنجاب ، تمرد فانينا على العادات سيجعلها تواجه عقوبة الدفن حية

رواية تاريخية جيدة لمعرفة جزء هام من تاريخ أساطير روما الوثنية لكن النهاية لم ترقني

رواية ممتعة إلى حد لا يمكنني وصفه. رغم أني كنت اتوقف لفترة ثم أعود لقراءتها مجدد إلا أنها من النوع الذي إذا عدت إليه تجد الأحداث تعاودك دون أن تعود إليها. لا أعرف إن كانت حقيقية - خيالية في الوقت ذاته ، بتصوير تحكم قساوسة الدين في مصائر الراهبات إلى جانب التلاعب الإنتقامي لمن لهم علاقة وثيقة بسلطة الدين لدعمهم في التسلط على الشعوب. هي قصة عشق لطيفة فيها من الصراع ما يكفي لهدم جذور الحب بين فانينا الراهبة وبطل الرواية، لكن في النهاية يجتمع الآلهه على معاقبة فانينا لعدم إخلاصها بانتهاك المحرمات التي لا يحق لراهبة ان تنتهكها ، وهنا يسلط الضوء على انتهاك سلطة الدين لصالح افراد لهم وزنهم في المجتمع للإنتقام من والد فانينا بتلفيق تهم للانتقام من والدها بابنته عن طريق ترهيبها والإقاع بها في فخ الخطيئة التي لم ترتكبها.


اللغة كانت ثرية بما يكفي لتشدك والأسلوب الوصفي كان رائع بقدر يجعلك تتخيل كل مشهد تحكيهِ الرواية بالتفاصيل المشوقة والغير مملة والتي اضفت روح جميلة تسرقك من العالم الذي تعيشة لتسافر لعالم و زمن الرواية باحداثها

رواية جميلة جداً. تستصيع أن تجد فها الإخلاص والحب التضحية. شخصياً تعرفت على نمص الحياة في روما في ذالك العصر أو في ذاك الزمان. أيضاً قمت بمعرفة كيف تكون حياة الراهبة وكيف يقوم باختيارها لخدمة المدينة وفي الختام اود ان اقول أن هذه الرواية من أجمل الروايت التي قرت لانها زودتني بمعلومات جديدة

I still have this book from back in the 70s. And the sequel. I loved them, great escapism. I was only in my 20s then and a hopeless romantic.

Poor Fanina. Beautiful isolated soul. Poor lonely idiot girl. No one to reach out to. Oh wait, there's a nearly complete stranger and possible enemy to you & your father. Danger awaits do you even bat an eyelash, boi-n-g - true love.

The dwarfs comings & goings were exciting but (insert perverse feelings here) weirded me out --as reaching out to someone ... just swinging out those big hulky arms... Sigh. What's he up to now I wonder? (more freaky feelings).

قرأت هذه الرواية لأنني أعشق الروايات الأغريقية والرومانية القديمة، وخصوصا التي ترتبط بأساطير معينه وخرافات يتناقلها الأجيال، لكن علي أن اعترف أنها كانت دون المستوى المأمول وكانت أشبه بأسلوبها إلى قصص الأطفال منها إلى قصص الكبار، لم تثر بي أي مشاعر سوى الملل الشديد وقفزت فصولها الأخير لاقرأ نهاية غامضة مبهمة، لا تستحق تضييع أي دقائق عليها
