Taras Shevchenko was a prominent Ukrainian poet, writer, artist, public and political figure, as well as folklorist and ethnographer. His literary heritage is regarded to be the foundation of modern Ukrainian literature. Shevchenko is also known for many masterpieces as a painter and an illustrator.
He was a member of the Sts Cyril and Methodius Brotherhood and an academician of the Imperial Academy of Arts.
Shevchenko has had a unique place in Ukrainian cultural history and in world literature. Through his writings he laid the foundations for the creation of a fully functional modern Ukrainian literature. His poetry contributed greatly to the growth of Ukrainian national consciousness, and his influence on various facets of Ukrainian intellectual, literary, and national life is still felt to this day.
Taras Shevchenko's Kavkaz (Caucasus) is a must read for anyone trying to understand Ukraine. It is a short poem, written in 1845, translated into many languages.
The poem is written from a few points of view, expressing understanding of russian imperialism towards the countries of Caucasus region. Big chunk of the poem is written in a satirical fashion from the point of view of russian empire - how proud they are of their achievements, their devotion to christianity and sizes of their prisons in siberia, full of people "from Moldovan to Finn, and in all their languages they are quiet, because they are prosperous".
The poem talks about how the experience of anyone in the shadow of russia is exactly the same: exploited, denied existence as anything but russia, erased, while parading their culture and sciences as superior and worthy of acknowledgement on the world arena. The "greatness" and "superiority" of russians dates back hundreds of years, and this poem is a testament to that.
