Acropolis #2

The Labyrinth

Rate this book
"There are countless wise quotes that wax poetic about choosing a path in life, poetry about the road less traveled, but there is nothing that says either path is easy. Each path requires sacrifice, each path is full of scars." ~Emma Chase

My name is Conor Reinhardt. I am a gargoyle Guardian in exile for killing my own. My mark is safe, the group of hybrids we've led from the Acropolis, secure. There's a new hybrid king in the Outer Levels of Hell, and he needs the Acropolis refugees. I expect the journey ahead. I even expect the danger. I don't expect the shadows that haunt me, those beckoning spirits of guilt that never let me sleep. Guilt from killing my own. I don't expect the things the hybrids learn about themselves. I don't expect many of the challenges in our path. I'm not sure I even expect us to survive The Labyrinth.

So, if you know me, you know I have told you all about how much I loved the Redemption series with Marcas (oh baby), Dayton (sarcasm on a stick), Monroe & Connor. But I was so busy gushing over them, that I dont know if I told you about Connors spin off The Acropolis Series? Well, I should have. This is the second book from that series, and I tell you, RKs writing & storytelling was wonderful, but this book has proven that this woman just goes from strength to strength. Her awesomeness knows no limits.

Life chose us. And in the end, it may not be the map we wanted to follow, but its the map were left with. The path you choose is the one that defines you. Our race deserves a chance." *So true*

This sequel had everything I loved about the Redemption Series, and the first book The Acropolis. It was jam packed full of action, emotion, forgiveness, friendship and unity. It even had a bit of Marcas & Dayton. I probably shouldnt say I let out a little squeal when I saw them, should I?!

Oh, my God! Seriously! And this is the group our king has chosen to save our race from annihilation?
It could be worse, I mumble. Marcas could have summoned Superman.
And you have a problem with Superman? Gray asks.
I snort.
Have you seen the old movies, the comic renditions? Manly went out the window when they put the curl on his forehead.
*lolz*

There certainly were tough times for Connor, Emma and the other hybrids. It wasnt easy succeeding in the mission the hybrid king set for them. They faced overwhelming odds & so many other things during their trip through Enipsigoss labyrinth to retrieve the spear of destiny. I dont want to tell you that death claimed 2 of their own, that they faced a headless man, a wolf thingo that knew their inner conflictions, nearly drown, and other obstacles. You must read it to comprehend how incredible their journey was.

..We have Demonic parents. So what? I think its time for a new beginning where we are bigger than our parents, bigger than our births, bigger than life. For the first time, this road has never looked so dangerous and yet so un-lonely. I dont feel alone. Its a testament to those among us who wont come back. *sniff sniff*

What I will tell you, is that it was gripping. I was so invested in this team that I could not, and would not put my kindle down. I will also tell you that their emotions were coming off the page and affecting me as if they were my own. There were parts of this story that had me so emotional I had tears pouring down my cheeks. I will also tell you that I wanted something amazing for Connor & Emma 2 broken souls slowly finding answers and knitting themselves back together. The whole gang had me rooting for each and every one of them, and I just have a little spot reserved for Diedra. Will they get their happy ending? You will have to read it to find out.

Now I must go & stalk Ms Ryals and hound her until the release of Deliverance.

Bravo, another book for my Love-Love-Love & 6 Star shelf. This series is not one to be missed.

After reading The Labyrinth, I am, yet again, in awe of the talent of this Author. R.K. Ryals turns out one epic series after another. In The Redemption series, you meet Conor, and learn a little about him. In The Acropolis, you learn about his life outside of Dayton and Monroe. But, in The Labyrinth, I think you really learn who he is, and what has shaped him. Emma is beginning to find her place in the new world she has been thrust into, and I really love seeing things from both POVs. The evolution of Conor, Emma, and all of the hybrids after The Acropolis is spellbinding! You learn to love characters you once thought you hated, and the underlying theme of the series is completely awesome! The Labyrinth is action packed, yet emotional and tender, all at once. Did I mention the ending? AAAAAHHHHHH!!! I highly recommend this book, this series, anything by R.K. Ryals! She hasn't let me down yet!!!

I actually don't know where to start but I guess I should say how much this book made me feel. R.K Ryals definitely wowed me again! Clearly, she's one of my most favorite authors ever because she's never disappointed me. Every book she has written that I've read had never failed to make me feel every single emotion her characters feels or experiences. Every word and every emotion written on her books affected me to my very core.

Labyrinth is the second book of the Acropolis series. It was two months after the hybrids' escape from the Acropolis. Connor left Emma in the SOS headquarters in Italy to help Dayton and Marcas battle Lucifer. He's confused and guilty because of what he did to free the hybrids. He's conflicted if he did the right thing so he just left without saying goodbye to Emma. A few weeks passed and Connor came back with Marcas as the new hybrid King. Marcas needs the hybrids' help to secure the new kingdom of hybrids. Specifically, he wants Emma to lead his army. The hybrids needs to learn how to become a unit in order to succeed but with their differences and Emma's lack of control of her powers, it seemed impossible. And there's the turmoil of Connor and Emma's cut-short romance.

Labyrinth is a really powerful novel. It's much better than the first. In this book we get to know more about the other hybrids, not just Emma which is really great. I loved these hybrids. In the first book, they were pretty much insignificant. It was always just about Emma and Connor, but in this second book we get to see the depths of the other characters. I love how each character is important and how R.K Ryals made them important and how she made me fall in love with them, flaws and their rough edges.

The plot was so excellently played out. There were times when I didn't expect things to turn out that way but they did and it was shocking and that made this book so good. It was completely unpredictable.

The pacing was good too. It wasn't hurried out or forced. Everything is simply exciting and played out well. The well played out turn of events made me hold my breath and kept me on the edge all through out.

The action in this book is phenomenal! It's well written that sometimes I forget to breathe while reading them.

As I said the characters are really endearing. I loved them all, especially the hybrids. The way they became a unit is simply fascinating. What they experienced together made them stronger as a unit and it's great. They were rough and flawed but also vulnerable, these things made me love them so much. I feel like exactly how Connor feels about the hybrids. Connor slowly sees the depths of the hybrids, not just Emma. He slowly sees them as not just half demons that's capable of evil but as humans too that's capable of good. That these hybrids crave peace and freedom too. They just want a home that they can call their own.

The romance between Connor and Emma is great too. The romance did not took over the whole plot which is nice. The romance was there but it's a process. It was gradual and natural. It wasn't forced out. I loved how Connor and Emma had to really find themselves first before going in too deep into a thoughtless relationship. I loved how R.K Ryals made the romance sensible and natural. I root for Emma and Connor because they deserve happiness.

Overall, I simply LOVE this book. It's perfect. Labyrinth is a nerve wracking, gut wrenching and an action packed adventure that's full of real emotions that a reader would feel to the depths of the reader's heart. It's simply amazing. If you're looking for all of these on your next read, pick up this book because this is for you and I swear you wouldn't regret it.

PS: I NEED THE NEXT BOOK LIKE I NEED AIR.

The Labyrinth, second book in the Acropolis series is even better than the first! Where at first the hyrbid demon kids at the Acropolis school were looking for freedom from prejudice and persecution, now they are on a new journey...one toward securing a haven, a new kingdom for those of half human and half demon blood. In the final book of the Redemption series (of which this series is a spin-off), hybrid demon Marcas Craig fought Lucifer for control of one of Hell's Outer Levels, to use as a safe haven for his kind. Now the kids from the Acropolis are invited to join this kingdom, but at a cost. They must journey through the Labyrinth, and secure the spear of destiny, which was used to pierce the side of Jesus Christ when he hung on the cross. Because it is stained with His blood, it is a powerful weapon that will secure Marcas' place as the hybrid king, and keep his kingdom safe.

Wow, what an amazing journey our hybrid group goes through in this book. Danger and drama surround them, forcing them to come together...which isn't easy for demons, but these hybrids' human sides are working overtime as they band together as a unit to make it through the terrifying trials of the Labyrinth, at the end of which is the spear of destiny.

Just as in the first book, Conor Reinhardt is a golden hero, a man of conviction. He knows that he started this thing with the hybrids, and will go into Hell with them to see it through. Despite the tremendous cost to his own way of life and family, Conor is steadfast in his protection of the hybrids. In this book, he has had to not only deal with the consequences of things he's done in the past and come to peace over them, he also must come to terms with his feelings for Emma...and all the hyrbids for that matter. A person who was once so judgmental has learned about the shades of gray between black and white, and this revelation adds much depth to Conor's character, developing him in such a way that he was the true star of this book.

It was nice to see Emma learning more about her powers and abilities, as well as finding a family with her fellow hybrids. I hope in the next book, that she really gets her mojo on the powers front, because I'm ready to see her kick some ass!!!

The book is a roller coaster ride of emotions, full of deep insights revealed in the characters through the author's poetic narration. She deals with the topic of death and grieving so poignantly that I was brought to tears when friends were lost. Another powerful work by R.K. Ryals, and definitely one of her best by far!

Another awesome book in the Acropolis series. I loved getting to continue Emma and Conor's story and see all my favourite characters again - both from the first book and from the Redemption series. In this book, Emma is learning more about mastering her powers over emotions while trying to deal with her own emotions. A couple of months have passed since the end of Acropolis and the escaped hybrids have reluctantly become a team and agreed to embark on a dangerous quest for Marcas, the new hybrid king. The hydbrids must enter a deadly maze in hell called the Labyrinth in order to retrieve a powerful artefact and aid Marcas' new kingdom. As the group, including Conor, embark on this quest they gradually learn to trust and depend upon one another. Amidst this epic quest, Emma and Conor are both also trying to deal with their feeling for each other and the possibility that whatever attachment they had several months ago at the Acropolis may now be lost.
This book was great and I think I liked it better than Acropolis. There was plenty of action and things moved quickly. I liked the team atmosphere created within the group of hybrids once they set off on this quest. Their shared losses and pain brought them together and made them stronger. I also really liked getting to see more of Emma and Conor's characters from the dual perspective writing. Emma has learned to control her powers a lot more and has shown a lot of strength in adjusting to her new life and in bringing the small group of hybrids together. Conor is still dealing with the guilt of betraying and killing his own kind and second-guessing his decision to help the hybrids. This threw a shadow of his normally sarcastic and joking personality and made him a lot more serious in this book. I had to admire his strength and willingness to sacrifice himself to defend the hybrids even with all these confusing thoughts and conflicting emotions.
Overall this was another great chapter of the Acropolis series and I will eagerly be awaiting the next book. I'd recommend both this and the Redemption series to anyone who is a fan of fantasy/paranormal romance with plenty of action and awesome characters.

This is the second book in the Acropolis Series. I have been eagerly awaiting the release of this book. It was most definitely worth the wait!

Conor Reinhardt is a fabulous character! He may be a gargoyle, but he is first and foremost a protector. He is very conflicted and consumed with guilt, but is determined to protect the hybrids he and Will managed to rescue from the Acropolis.

Emma Chase is one of the hybrids that Conor saved. She is half human and half demon. She had thought for many years that she was dying. It turns out that she could feel other peoples emotions. She is a fascinating character. She has an inner strength that impressed me. Even in the most dire of circumstances, she keeps her wits about her.

I absolutely LOVED this story! The story picks up about 6 weeks after the refugees arrived at the SOS headquarters in Italy.
Marcus Craig (from The Redemption Series) has won the battle in Hell for a place for the hybrids to live in peace. However, he needs an alliance with the one demon that Emma doesn't want to meet, her mother Enepsigos. This is the beginning of a terrifying and dangerous mission for the hybrids.

R.K. Ryals has written another fast paced novel that had me hooked from the first page! The most terrifying thing for me was that my imagination was running away with me! Although I'm not scared of the dark, the description of the Labyrinth had me biting my nails! Not literally, but figuratively. The anxiety felt by all concerned was quite palpable. I was on tender hooks, wondering what would happen next! I am now looking forward to reading the next book in the series! I highly recommend this YA book (and series) if you are looking for a fantastic paranormal adventure/romance. Oh, and read the The Redemption Series too! - Lynn Worton (#WaAR)

Ok so first of all I cried.. Yes I'm a crier. I cry for love and loss. Hell I cry at sappy commercials but this time I cried for the loss of a friend. It surprised me most of all because it's not who I thought I would of been sad to lose.
I'm not saying anything more on that...

The Labyrinth is crazy.. Both the story and the fight for the spear of Destiny. All of the young hybrids have to come together and go through frightening challenges all to collect the spear of destiny that will help in their fight for freedom. These challenges are hard but if they work together they just might be able to. The problem is demons only work for themselves right?

Wow, so much emotion in this book that I'm still so wrapped up in them. Each one of the hybrids and Conor faced so much in that HELL hole. Crazy demons trying to fool them in ways hat you couldn't imagine. I was definitely on edge waiting to see who would make it out, if any of them at all.

My favorite hybrid, that would be Gray. I don't know why but there's something about him. There's just more to him then he lets people see. Then there is Conor. I love his romanticizing ways. He holds that part back though. He exudes strength, loyalty, determination and seems fearless. On the inside he struggles to do what's right.
Who knows what that is in this world of fallen angels, demons, gargoyles all fighting for a cause. Which one will win? Will they all join together or destroy each other? I'm going to find out now..

On to the next book. But first.. RK.. Making me cry was not good and that ending.. Can I say DAMN....

The Labyrinth joins Connor Reinhardt once again with Emma Chase and the hybrid demons. They have escaped the Acropolis and now Marcas is in need of a favor of these orphaned hybrids. In order for him to secure his position in the Outer Levels of hell he needs the Spear of Destiny. And the only way to get it is in the realm of Emma’s demon mother, Enipsigos. They are unsure of this mission handed to them by their hybrid king but his faith in them and wise words make them accept – together they are powerful. Connor decides to make the journey with them – out of guilt for what he had to do to help them escape or out of a growing love for Emma – he is not sure which. The journey into the Labyrinth is a test where this mismatched band of half demons are met by full demons who try to thwart their way, doubt themselves and cause lives to be lost. Emma and Connor stand together on this journey and with all the pain, loss and victory their hearts open to the truth of who they each are and what they love about the other. The success of this group is the catalyst for Marcas to stand up to the Lucifer himself and further secure the place of hybrid demons. The journey this book takes you is heartbreaking but at the same time healing for the characters. R.K. Ryals has created a wonderful group of personalities that complete each other beautifully. I am looking forward to the last in this series to see where Connor and Emma stand while the rest of their merry band of demons finds their place.

The Labyrinth (Acropolis Series book 2) by R. K. Ryals

Review by Becky Harley

5 Stars

I Loved this book.

Now in exile after escaping the Acropolis, Emma and Conor find themselves working with the other hybrid’s in order to help the new Hybrid King Marcus ensure the future of the highbred race. In order to do this they must venture in to Enipsigos’ Labyrinth.

After the events of the previous book in the series it was nice to see how each of the characters has grown, in particular Emma. She has begun to come to terms with her parentage and her powers and is now able to use them to help others.

Conor’s struggle with killing his own in the previous book is obvious throughout this book and it really makes you feel for him. He is a very loyal character who did what he had to to protect those he believes are innocent.

The romance and connection between Emma and Conor was obvious in the first book of the series, but could have been further developed in this book. The growing friendship between the hybrids is heartwarming and you find yourself hoping they succeed and secure their futures.

Parts of this book were very emotional and excellently written. The emotions of each character are clear and well portrayed.

The storyline for this series is original and captivating and I could not put it down. The twists and turns in this series are exciting and I can’t wait to read the next instalment in the series.

Heart-wrenchingly amazing!

R.K. Ryals can do no wrong of this I'm sure. I loved the Redemption series and couldn't wait to read this series and get to know Conor better. If you want to read a book that takes you far away from normal but keeps it all believable this is it. This book contains so many different creatures but it never felt fake or made up. R.K. Ryals writes with such description that I felt like I was a part of the story battling the fights with the hybrids.

I loved all the characters in this book. Each one goes through their own struggles and comes out stronger. The personal growth the characters undergo is inspiring. To have hybrid demons go against their nature and fight together for one goal is astonishing. Emma is so inspiring. She takes whatever she is faced with head on no matter how scared she is. She is a heroine I would love my daughter to take after (fictional or not). I can't wait to see where the relationship will go for Conor and Emma. I also cried tears while reading this. The journey the characters endured came with loss and I was sad to see those characters go. It was also uplifting to see the remaining characters pick themselves up and carry on even in their sadness.

I loved this book from start to finish and can't wait for the next one in the series. If I could give this book 10 stars it would have them!

Just a few pages in and there's already action, and tension with the characters, I love it! "Sarcasm is overrated, Bruno. Conor Reinhardt is Emma's protector. For him, that's practically a declaration of love." Conor was really frustrating me in this book, second guessing some of his choices and not being able to make up his mind on things that should have been made up on a long time ago. Then there are some of his actions that pissed me off, it's like SERIOUSLY! The love Conor has for Emma is something most people spend their whole lives looking for and I really cherished that:
(something happened before this scene so it may not make sense to some people I don't want to give away spoilers)
"Done now, Romeo?" Roach snarls
My eyes are on Emma's. Her gaze on mine. It's all that matters.
"Add that to my list of crimes," I say lightly.
And of course just when the going gets good it's cut off I'm really despising these damn cliffhangers! Can't wait for the next book in the series.

I started with the Redemption series and loved those and wanted to see Conor meet his match. I like Emma, Dee, and all of the half-demons in this book. With the way book 1 ended, I wasn't sure how this group fell in with Marcas and the other half demons. I did enjoy how it all came together, but definitely not liking the cliffhanger at the end of the book. I'm still thinking through how Conor and Will will get out of this one.

What makes this series good are the characters and their interactions. Although they are teenagers, they aren't typical teenagers and no matter what they are, they teach you that they shouldn't just be judged by their parentage which is something they cannot control. I can't wait to read book 3 and would say that some would find this series "younger" feeling than the Redemption series (even though Dayton is a teenager too). That doesn't mean it isn't worth reading. For some reason, this series doesn't feel quite as dark as the Redemption series, but they are still linked and a good follow up from that series.

If you ever played Dungeons and Dragons or any other roleplaying game, you are certainly familiar with the idea of a heterogeneous group thrown into a cave with a certain target to achieve.

Well, one of the things that group would have hated so much they'd abort the adventure is to have no control over the challenges. We try to find traps but each trap is finding us faster. The roof of the cave is caving in so fast that we can't even start applying our skills. And then the dungeon master whips out his six sided die, rolls, points with a finger at a random character and says: "You're dead. Sorry, no dexterity check allowed."

This is the mood this novel brought me into.

Don't get me wrong: The characters are strong, the ideas as well, but again after The Acropolis the author disregarded most rules of good storytelling.

OMG I LOVE THIS SERIES! I also love how this series ties together with The Redemption Series. All my favorite characters are present in some fashion plus I get to fall in love with so many more. Extremely well written with flawed characters that you see grow and the comradery that develops as they face the trials and tribulations of the labyrinth. I will also warn you, I cried my eyes out. The closeness I developed with these unlikely heros even surprised me.

The labyrinth they must journey through is filled with craziness, heartache and loss, but these demon hybrids amazed me with the heart and bond they used to continue on. I cannot tell you enough how emotional this book was for me. I found the alliances that formed to impact me the most and I will have to agree with Deidra when she says, "Unity is the hybrid advantage", because together they kick butt and slay my heart.

Read the first book and really enjoyed it...how this author improves and improves and improves is beyond me!! I never thought I would fall in love with a group of demons and one sexy gargoyle! Who would've thought!!? Not me!!! This is the second book in the series and picks up right where we left off. Our favorite group of new friends, no matter that they are demonic, are thrown into a new battle they didn't choose but it chose them! With something horrifying at every turn will they all come out alive? Will they be forever changed? Or is this fight they've been thrown into worth it?? You must read it to find out!! Oh and the ending!!! Aghhhhhh *pulls hair out* why must those cliffhangers happen! Love/hate them! Love this one! Love it! Hate it!! I'm so confused!! RK Ryals!!! Need the next one pronto!!! Lol !!! #problemsofabooknerd ;)

I liked this one more than the first which is good for me as that doesn't often happen with series for me
I think there was a lot of potential for this book and I think it could have been a little bet better. I feel like the labyrinth part could have been more complicated and action packed. I did like that part but I felt like there should have been more thats all I wanted

I did really like the growth in this book especially with the main group of hybrids and Connor as they all did the labyrinth together and there was some serious sad moments but they all are so much better and stronger even though there is a little bit of one for all ideas that does get a little annoying and everything

I did love that Dayton and Marcus were in it a little I love seeing them from other peoples point of view
I'm keen to see how it ends

This novel is a continuation of The Acropolis.

Now that the hybrids have found sanctuary, they have been sent on a mission to secure a homeland. Meanwhile, as Conor contemplates his feelings for Emma, he continues to learn more about himself. This YA series has a positive message for teens. If you don't like the path your parents took, you can choose a different one for yourself. It's all about being true to your beliefs.

If you're enjoying this series, you may want to try the more advanced Redemption trilogy because Dayton's and Marcas's story is actually where it all began.

Marcus the Hybrid king needs Emma and the other hybrids to get the Spear Of destiny from Emma's mom. They need the spear to keep lucifer out of the outer levels of hell so the hybrids wont have to bow down to him. They have to travel through the labyrinth and endure many trials, demons are sent to try and stop them. Lessons are learned and friendships are solidified. Story about true strength and courage. I hate to say this, but I've given-up-for-now on Connor/Emma. The writing is not as good as it was in Ryals' Redemption series and the story just isn't as entertaining. I was expecting more I guess. I wanted to love Connor - he really caught my attention in the Redemption books, but he's just 'meh' here. I still love R.K. Ryals as an author and plan to come back to this one to finish it, but right now it's just too easy to set it aside in favor of something more gripping.

The Labyrinth was a wonderful book. so emotional! I felt for Emma and with Her loss of Ace and for the loss of the Hesther. I loved how much Conor was there for Emma and how all the Hybrids learned to stand as one! I am anxious to hear what happens next!

What I loved about the Redemption series was the relationship between Dayton & Marcas and Dayton's character. This one is half way there with Emma as a likeable heroine but Connor is not at all appealing ( I like Will better) and the romance feels forced and lacking in any connection.

The second in the series was just as good as the first. Love the character development in this one. This book would be a very good choice for kids as well as adults. It has violence and death but a lesson as well.
