I am not sure what brought this series of books to my attention. Maybe its part penance for not appreciating what my parents tried to do for me as a child, part regret for not appreciating the lessons I was taught (or at least they tried to teach) at school or maybe its partly due to the fact in my work I am travelling to some of these places and I feel woefully uneducated in the places and people I see and meet.

I am not sure but what I do know is that there is a drive in me to correct what ever reason is that is nagging at me that I need to educate myself and the only person who I can blame is me.

So I took a step back to a series - the books I have are early 70s Readers Digest re-prints of the Aldus series referenced above.

this book is the first in the series and as such charts the exploration of early man (and even earlier) up to the final days of the Roman Empire - if there is such a thing as a definitive cut off.

The books are rather dated - for example they discuss the details around Egypt and the Aswan region - a location now underwater thanks to the dam project that was later brought in to effect (okay they did move a lot of the antiquities so its not like they lost them knowingly).

However for some one who loves books and loves to explore the pages within them this book was a great starting point the question is where to next in the series.
