This collection of papers describes a special way of seeing and caring for infants. It is of value to all people concerned with infant care, including parents, infant carers, educators, physicians, therapists, those who implement day care programs, as well as those who advise or consult with parents.
Section 1 (“Practical Suggestions for Parents”) of this manual was the most informative for me. Sections 2 and 3 read like articles for scientific journals (which they probably were). As a whole, I’d say this is an effective document; but I am more likely to return to Magda Gerber’s “Your Self-Confident Baby” as a RIE resource. However, I am motivated and inspired by the content I found here.
I became interested in Magda Gerbers philosophy of childcare and wanted to learn more. While the principles are interesting to me this was a bit tough to get through as it’s a collection of a bunch of different articles, interviews and speeches so it gets incredibly repetitive. The first part is great as it is all practical applications in everyday life but then delves more into feeling like I’m reading the abstract of a scientific c article without ever actually getting to the actual science
This book is not always the easiest to read compared to some books on RIE, however it has valuable information. It offers stories of how care was provided at Loczy and developed by Pikler. Some interesting essays. I particularly enjoyed the sections with descriptions and photos of RIE environments.
The single most influential resource I have read in regard to infant development. Magda Gerber and her approach to "educaring" is a must-read for anyone working with infants or who has an infant! Beautiful.
