Para sa Hopeless Romantic

Rate this book

I liked this book. Very fresh take on romance writing. It basically follows the same formula for this very commercial genre but the overall structure and the impact of this book are different. Not the usual tiring romance pocketbooks, both in Tagalog or English, that you will find flooding the local market.

For me, these were the reasons why I liked this book better:

1) The writer is a young free-spirited fresh from college male. Marcelo Santos III graduated from PUP in 2011 and revolutionized storytelling by producing Love Story on Video (LSOV) by showing the texts on a blank video with background music. He became a popular blogger before becoming a short film director/writer and now a novelist. When he started writing poems and short stories in high school they were mostly funny. The evidence of his creativity and some funny elements can seen in this book Para sa Hopeless Romantic (Translation: For the Hopeless Romantic). An example of his creativity is the use of 5 characters (5 POV's) telling their own love stories but the love stories are not independent from each other. I know that this is not new even in local books but the sequence is something that I have not seen before: the frame real story is "inside" the unreal story. It is like the story that the writer is weaving precedes her. My only problem in this structure is that Santos should have tied up the unreal story at least by stating the writer character Maria would resume the storytelling after her own story ended. Also, the fifth story seemed misplaced. It felt like an afterthought. But it is nevertheless cute because Jackie is the funniest character in this book. It felt like a gamble in Santos' case, like pushing his experiment further, and it worked just a bit for me.

In my humble opinion, this should not be compared to Ricky Lee's Para Kay B (2 stars) because Lee's style is too melodramatic basically because of the tragedy and gay love. Also, Lee's book about 5 love stories are not interrelated and only 1 of the five stories ended happily. "Hopeless Romantic" is 5 romance stories that makes this a romance book while overall "Para Kay B" is basically a love story book.

2) The tone is very contemporary and not melodramatic. Reading Tagalog romance books always feels better than English romance books. Tagalog feels much closer to a Filipino heart. The rhyme, cadence and beat of Tagalog words have the power to strike the chords of our emotions compare to the when I read English romance novels. However, most Tagalog romance writers have the tendency to go overboard by having too mushy statements that can be downright corny. Santos was able to control myself by making his narrative bearable to male readers. Santos was able to effectively use his being young and male and he seemed to know that he could not compete with the many female romance authors around. He needed to be different and cater his works for both male and female young readers.

3) The book's appearance does not have that old tiring look of romance novels that we see too many of around. Do you notice how many romance books we have in our bookstores? And their publishers make sure that they come in the same size and format? Sometimes the only differences are the title, author's name and the picture of a man on the cover? Even the number of pages are usually the same. It's tiring to look at them especially when you see later that the book originally being sold for P200 ($4) have been discounted to P75 ($1.50). Then the number of pages would give you a warning that their authors have to compromise by making sure that their stories will not exceed the number of pages the publishers impose.

Here, you will not feel that Santos compromised his story because of the required number of pages. There is no hurried feeling that he cut short what he wanted to say especially with the surprised addition of Jackie's story in the final chapter.

Kudos to Marcelo Santos III. He sure is a new author to watch out for.

Don't judge. I'm a Marcelo Santos virgin.

I think the storyline is quite okay. I just kind of hate it sometimes, because you can feel that the author is kind of trying to be funny, whilst attempting to state something profound. Channeling Bob Ong, eh? Hmmm. Meh. At some point, I think the author is actually aiming for a Ricky Lee. I just don't know. Maybe, it's just me.

I won't say I didn't like it, over all, I think, Marcelo captures the heart of his audience and his stories are really targeted to his readers and this novel is his answer to the 'strike while the iron is hot' cliche. My very close friend Boado would like this, love this book even. I just know it. Unfortunately and sadly, I don't belong to the teenage circle clamoring for this kind of storytelling anymore, let's just say, I already grew up and matured. (Caveat, this doesn't mean, I'm calling Marcelo's fans young and immature.) For an instance, I don't use very cute and colloquial student terms like: nakacivilian and magvandal anymore.

P.S.

Here are some lines that sort of ticked me off:

No choice lang ako."

-- Really now, Marcelo, really now, why'd you have to quip such thing? I have nothing against people not watching telenovelas, albeit, I think it's kind of strange and poseurish not to watch even one, I actually am acquainted with someone who doesn't really pay much attention to these things, it's just that... hmm, how can I put this? Okay, let's be honest, this line is kind of pretentious, there, I said it.

"Hindi mo deserve ang tulad ko."

-- Okay lang ang Taglish, I actually like Taglish. But, the truth is... ang FAIL lang nito.

"Nakamoved on"

"Napublished"

"Mas better"

-- I'm not a grammar nazi (I'm no expert, hey), but I think this is grammatically incorrect. Grammarians, where art thou?

At ang daming typos. Grr. Joke lang, di ako galit. :D

God Bless You kuya Marcelo. No. 1 Fan mo ko! Hope you can read this! hindi ako magsasawang sumuporta sayo.:) -MaryAnnKimFeliciano

This book is just plain bad.
Sappy dialogues.
Overly Dramatic Scenes.
Predictable stories.
No action.
Too much and too long internal dialogues.
Cheesy lines.

Ugh.

Next Station: Araneta Center - Cubao.

Pakinggan at Tandaan.

PS:
Kailangan nya pa ng time.

I am not really a fan of Marcelo Santos III . I think his love stories in videos are a little bit cliche and too dramatic for my taste. But this book is surprisingly good for a debut author.

Para sa Hopeless Romantic is divided into 5 interrelated stories. There are 5 narrators and all of them are linked to each other. The first narrator is Ryan who is secretly in-love with his bestfriend and classmate, Maria. The second narrator is Becca who is sort of the usual bitter ex-girlfriend who can't seem to move on from her past love. Third is Nikko, Becca's ex-boyfriend. Fourth is Maria, Ryan's love interest and the fifth is the hilarious Jackie, which, by the way is my favorite character out of the five.

How are the stories related? That's for you to find out. :)

One of the things I like about this book is the simple narration. Since the author is quite young and understands the language of the youth, the book was written in simple Filipino that we can all understand. There are also slang and taglish words which are quite popular among the younger generations. It is obvious that this book is written for younger audiences, most especially, teens. The stories are cute but not that deep. If you are looking for a book with so much depth then I advise you to skip this one. But if you're into feel-good, cutesy romance, then you will probably love this book.

I also like the fact that the lives of the characters do not just revolve around their love lives. The characters are also concerned about their studies, families and friends. I like that because it imparts a good message to its young readers. It's refreshing to read characters which actually care about their home works, thesis and reports.

Furthermore, I just love how the five stories are related to each other. I sort of have a thing for books containing interrelated stories. It's exciting to guess how will the other story will be linked to another one. And oh, I love happy endings. I don't really dig tragic stories so this book is fine with me.

However, I need to point out some parts which need improvements.
First, the characters' internal monologues are sometimes too long and redundant. I was a bit exasperated on some parts because I am the kind of reader who likes more action. Also, this book suffers from the case of "telling" rather than "showing" , but that's just for a few parts.

I also had a problem differentiating one narrator from the other. They all sounds alike to me.

I guess the reason why I only like this book is because I feel like I'm a little too old for this. I'm 21, yeah, not that old, but there are a number of scenes when I couldn't help but roll my eyes.

But all in all, it is a surprisingly enjoyable read, perfect for teens and teens by heart.

P.S.

I strongly believe that Jackie should have a longer story line than what has been written. The girl is just so funny and adorable, she deserves a book of her own.

Basahang Breezy To Be Hopeless No More

Lagi.

Ika nga nila, there’s no harm in trying, at least.

Not bad talaga. Pero dude, di pa rin talaga ako maka-get over sa ilang loophole sa plot, to think na na-edit at binigyan pa ito ng extended version. Ay, first-time novelist nga pala! Sarreh nah, fwends.

Kaya I can't find something different to make me go head over heels kay crushie ng bayan. Kaya there are some books that may make you croon or make you cringe. Walang masama doon, promise. Ang masama lang ay breaking up with your minamahal for the shallowest of reasons kasama ng kawalan ng tapang sa hindi mapaninidigang pag-ibig. *shudders*

'Yon lang.

Kthnxbye.

I've never really heard of Marcelo Santos III before until I saw this book with the very catchy title. It has been a long time since I read another book written in Filipino, with Para Kay B being the last one. At first, I thought this was like a humorous book, but it seemed that I was very mistaken. It wasn't just humorous... I felt a hell of a lot of emotions while reading this book.

Oh, and yeah. Because of my curiosity of this book, I bought a copy last Sunday, but my copy has some missing pages, which brought me to have a conversation with the author himself. And I returned the copy and had another one last Monday. :)

It seemed like this book had resurrected my liking of books written in Filipino, since I seldom see those quality books because of those ones that have been just translated like The Vampire Diaries, The Hunger Games and holy effing shit, Fifty Shades. I mean come on! How do you even read that one in Tagalog?

For those Hopeless romantics out there, read this one!

TAGOS SA BUTO.

I'm familiar with Marcelo Santos III's works especially "Upuan". I'm so in love with that story. SO, Para sa Hopeless Romantic is beyond amazing. Super ganda! I think it's wise na ipagdugtong dugtong ang mga remarkable na story sa isang book. Anyone who'll read it can relate. Thumbs up!

Speaking of Characters, lahat sila likable, lahat sila may iba't ibang katangian na magugustuhan mo.

i saw this book while browsing around national bookstore. familiar na ako kay marcelo santos III from his "love story on video" creations, and to be honest, i wasn't all that drawn in by this young gentleman's storytelling style or dialogue.

seeing "para sa hopeless romantic", i still had my doubts, but since i wanted to be a believer of local romance writers, i gave mr. santos the benefit of the doubt and spent money on his book. "who knows," sabi ko, "maybe he has vastly improved and has something good to offer since novel na ito."

there will be those who'll like -- even love -- "para sa hopeless romantic". i won't be one of those people. i'm not asking for anything original; romance stories are usually predictable. that said, i still have expectations. all i wanted was to have a reason to pay attention to the story, maybe even care for the characters. maybe find something even the tiniest bit special, and feel that the author gave a part of himself (a person that took time to get in touch with his emotions, and not just a person who thinks of a scenario and dialogue to write) to the story. i didn't get any of those.

i'll give props to mr. santos for intertwining different characters' stories together, and they do work. but there is nothing memorable about the overall experience or the characters. coincidences are too many, and most dialogue are overextended and unnecessary (like nikko's talk with his mom from abroad). sidekicks like jackie and rj talk exactly the same way. i found myself skimming the latter pages para lang matapos ko na yung libro, and when i did, there was nothing but a feeling of apathy.

mr. santos is still a young man. i won't be surprised if he becomes a polished and outstanding storyteller later on, one who will not only earn the praise and admiration of teens and young ones, but of those who have forgotten to believe in the power of romance. this time though, his effort is wanting, and i feel he has been too influenced by local romantic movies and teleseryes to express insights that could've been uniquely his.

maybe next book. i still want to believe in our local romance writers, and i'm still keeping my fingers crossed for someone to break the mold.

Well, this is a PERFECT BOOK FOR VALENTINE'S DAY.

Thumbs up to Marcelo Santos III! He's indeed one good author. :)

It was a great book! Though not as much as I expected it to be because I thought the theme of the story is hilarious and fun. Yes, it was fun, I had a huge laugh at the first few paragraphs but little did I know, it wasn't just a story that makes people laugh or you know, just to entertain but the novel teaches a lesson and it is very relevant- something you'd pick to read because you think you are a "Hopeless Romantic" But when you'll finish reading it,You'll realize that it's a novel that would open your eyes and your heart to something new. I'm not a hopeless romantic but still, it was a very good one!

Kudos Marcelo. :)

Being a lover of romance, chick-lit or not, I enjoyed reading this book. Yes, it can be predictable, but I still get giddy when I read of how two people are meant to be together.

Diba??! Nakakakilig kaya yun! : ))

This book was divided into 6 small stories, for each of the six main characters. I tried to think of a favorite, but it's a bit hard. It's not none is 'appealing' enough, but each has its own quirkiness.

I especially like Ryan & Maria's hidden love stories.
Becca's story was a little too serious for me. But I find myself relating to her a bit.
Nikko's story is where the predictability of the book is... confirmed. Nevertheless, I think it helped that I was thinking of James Reid the whole time, that I ended up... kinikilig. : ))
Jackie's story was bitin, but then again, she's the ever-famous sidekick lang naman.
And Faye. I enjoyed reading her story. Marcelo Santos III definitely had a lot of "quotable quotes" here. Mukhang based on experience.

Overall, I'd give this 3 stars.

The additional 0.5 half-star is coming from the book discussion/interview with author. He worked hard for his 'success', and on top of that, he remains humble and grateful. I look forward to reading more of his works in the future. (Although, maybe as he 'matures' in his genre. Hindi kasi ako masipag magbasa ng YA. Hehe!)

Kaya thumbs up for Kuya Marcelo :).

Some of my friends have been gushing over this book - especially now that it has been turned into a movie. I was curious as to what the hype was about so after a very long time of contemplating (and as my college friends says, in support of my fellow PUPian), I decided to give this story a shot.

Reading this, I found myself skipping on some parts (well, i think i kind of skimmed the book ✌) still understanding the plot (very predictable; somewhat cliche) and cringing on some lines (some grammatical errors and too sappy dialogues! i think i need to read more tagalog romance novels ☺).

What I really liked was how the lives of the characters are intertwined and the contemporary approach of the story every teen can relate to. The book is okay, considering that this is the author's debut novel.

P.S. Jackie's very cute and funny! I loved her character!

Okay, so maybe I wasn't really informed on what would be the contents of this book, but I was still disappointed that it Marcelo's love story on videos was just published. I was still young when I first read those stories and yeah, I was swooned.

For the story itself, I would've rated it from 3-3.5 but as for the book(+ the fact that I already know the story. It's more of 2-2.5.

Sorry, Marcelo. Not really a big fan of the book. It was just okay.

Hahaha, Ang cute ng storya. A little unique pero medyo tipikal na sya. Pero nagustuhan ko talaga. Para talaga to sa mga Hopeless Romantic. Nakakatawa yung mga punchlines dito. Hahaha. Sigurado ko, lahat ng makakabasa nito, makaka-relate. :D Nice one Marcelo! :D

I want to know what the hype is about and my sister has a copy.
