Seri bitti.

In this final volume of Planetes, Fee loses her fight against the dangerous mess created by the war in space. Disgusted by the stupidity of the whole situation, she decides she's done picking up other people's trash. Eventually, though, she decides that she can't just run away from the problem and decides to go back to work.

We also get to see what Hachi is up to on the Von Braun, which adds a bit of humor to offset Fee's more dramatic story. Though Hachi's speech at Jupiter is extremely inappropriate from a historical prospective (imagine if Neil Armstrong had started describing the good old days in the Air Force rather than talking about steps and giant leaps), it does make a good epilogue to Hachi's character and is a very fitting way to end the manga.

All in all, Planetes is an excellent addition to anyone's manga collection, either as a standalone story, a supplement to the anime, or, more commonly, both.

(Volume 1-4)

Overall 7.3/10 menurut saya

What really got me interested in the series was the premise! Stories centered around space always catch my interest so I really wanted to read this one (I’m also excited to start reading Space Brothers soon). However, while the story started off strong with that first chapter, the overall story ended up being a bit lackluster. There were some really touching and beautiful moments, but I felt like there were too many moments where it seemed like the author didn’t really know what to do with the plot. It seemed like in his attempt to cover a bunch of really interesting themes he ended up not really developing any of them. Considering the fact that this is more of a human-centered story (it is a slice of life after all) I would have expected the characters to be much more interesting than what we got. Most of the characters just seemed very bland and underdeveloped.

While I didn’t enjoy this series very much, I can still appreciate what the author was attempting to do and can still enjoy the moments that were compelling in the story (and I look forward to eventually starting the author's masterpiece Vinland Saga ).

Re-read of the whole series since I bought it as birthday gift for my friend (who luckly isn't active on GR so no risk of ruining her surprise) and I might as well read it again before it leaves my hands. It's hard to be objective about this one since it's first manga I read and book that broke some of my preconceptions about medium so I loved it this time around too but reading I realized something that might be unpopular opinion.

This is first physical copy of manga I read in long time and I actually prefer electronic version. In addition to being smaller than my tablet most of physical copies of manga I came across don't open fully easily, at least not without deforming it. So I'm sticking it to e-manga from now on.

“God is out there, hiding in the vastness of space, just watching our pain. I’m not so generous as to keep letting him do that forever. And if, as they say, God is love…
…then we should become God. Otherwise, across the universe, we humans will never know true love.

Stunning conclusion to the manga, I loved the chapters about Fee and her family, I love the themes of love, rebellious spirit and humanity. Makoto Yukimura created an excellent story, it’s often saddening and too realistic to stomach but in its core there is a love to humans and to our drive to discover the world around and rediscover ourselves.

Loved the entire serie. Very well scientifically researched. Characters are poignant and funny at the same time although at some moments the scenario is too slow and complicated to my taste. Overall a very good manga about space exploration and space junks management, which is a real life issue that will need to be tackled by humanity in the very short future if we want the manga to stay on the realm of science fiction.

Planetes Volume 4 brings the series to a powerful and reflective conclusion, tying together the themes of ambition, loneliness, and the quest for meaning in a way that is both satisfying and bittersweet.

Having now finished the series, I can see how Yukimura’s fascination with the concept of freedom, and the search for meaning in unforgiving environments, clearly transitions from the cold void of space to the brutal world of Viking warriors.

How is it that I like literally every other character except the main character? Is he supposed to be a character that the reader dislikes? I just sort of feel like he goes on this typical character arc and that's boring. Plus, he's kind of the class clown type and it comes across as really immature at times. I do like the series as a whole. Makes me wonder what's up there that we don't yet know about.

Planetes Review

5/5 stars

This will be a spoiler free review. Onto the review!

For all those who don’t know, this is the debut manga of the same mangaka who wrote Vinland Saga. I’ve been slowly working my way through Vinland Saga, but I’ve been watching the anime first, so it’s taking me forever to get through the series. So I decided to go back and read his short, debut manga series, that way I can still read something of his while I’m waiting for the next season of Vinland Saga.

This is a 4 volume manga series set in the near future where people now live on the moon. It follows this group of people who have the job of collecting space junk. So basically it’s about space janitors. And honestly, it was great. This isn’t the sort of series where you get invested long term. You just read this and learn interesting facts about the realities of space travel.

Makoto Yukimura always makes sure he’s done his research for everything he writes, and it shows. I’ve never spent any time studying space travel, and the science of going to space, but it’s clear he has. Every volume ended with so much fascinating information about the people who have gone to space. Every single detail he researched and included in here really made this short series come to life.

The main plot is that one of space janitors hopes to eventually go on the first mission to Jupiter. He spends a lot of time training and preparing for the mission, while also trying to do his job. His teammates are very passionate about collecting space junk, but all he cares about is going to Jupiter. As per usual with Yukimura’s stories, the characters feel very complex and real, which helped to keep me connected to the story.

If you’re looking for something about space travel that doesn’t just handwave away the science and hope you won’t notice how little research the author did, this is definitely a series I can recommend for that. It’s slice of life, but on the moon. Space isn’t super scary anymore. Space is a 9-5 janitorial job, that just so happens to be a bit more exciting and dangerous than your typical earth janitorial jobs.

I can’t really say much else since it’s so short. If this sounds interesting to any of you, definitely give it a try. I had a blast reading this, and it made me even more excited for the next season/volumes of Vinland Saga. Maybe if the anime doesn’t update for a while, I’ll have to read the manga faster to see what happens. This did not have the intended effect of keeping me occupied until the anime updates. It made me more anxious to know what happens. Oh no…

Update: How am I just now finding out there's an anime of this? Adding that to my very long list of things to watch.

Note: I used the omnibus covers for the image for this review, which is why there are 2 of them, rather than 4.

Have a nice day/night everyone!

Isso me surpreendeu negativamente.

This series is a research-worthy material. This is one of the most thought-provoking manga series I've read. Even though this sets in the future, the issues that Yukimura-san explores in this series is so relatable. There are a lot of info-dumping about the world of Planetes at the end of these volumes, but I couldn't find myself read it now. It would be better to get the physical copy to really explore the wonders of space and humanity. The characters have grown a lot, especially Hachimaki, he's not the same naive person as before. Not to mention the artwork is almost perfect, I had a fantastic experience reading this, this is definitely a 5-star series!

There are a lot of manga about space exploration or space adventure, but among them Planetes stands as one of the best if not the best of the best!

This series is well written with really good character development and really good artwork, especially on the space ships. Oh the space ships are also drawn in a very sensible way, in near future, those are what our space ships gonna looks like!

The issues and intrigues written in the plot are also make sense, relevant, and suitable for a near future settings.

This is one of manga series that I would recommend to anyone.

Erinomaista scifimangaa.
