Thirty-five year old, African American Noah Hopkins loved his job as a nurse. He worked late nights and long hours, so that wasn’t conducive to meeting and dating. But inevitably on his shift, the paramedics from the Los Angeles Fire Department would bring in victims from accidents or illnesses to their trauma center and the female nursing staff would put out the alert. ‘Code Red’. It was a silly phrase they used when a hot fireman would be spotted in the ER. And everyone who worked at the LA Medical Center knew, fire-fighter Keegan Vance was ‘Code Red’ indeed! Noah had to tolerate the female staff circling Keegan like buzzards when he showed up, and Noah and Keegan were always friendly and professional to each other when they met. Tough, masculine, Keegan Vance was ex-army, and in a career where homophobia was rife, the LAFD, so he kept his private life private. He was not out to anyone, not even his family. Only one person knew his secret, his housemate Karen. But there was a man he kept meeting at the ER who had already captured his heart. Seeing the care and professionalism Noah used with everyone he contacted, Keegan was already smitten with the handsome nurse. But he had no idea how he was going to date him without the gossip and information getting out and making his life miserable. It was a risk Keegan would have to take if he took the leap and wanted a man in his life. A man as incredible as Noah. Both men were used to trauma and high stress on the job, thought they could handle anything. But when it came to love, it was anything but easy. It was ‘Code Red’ all the way, and the two men had to handle putting out the fire or learn to enjoy the burn. Die hard G A Hauser fans will love this to bits, no doubt about it and as per usual she has couples from her other books making an entrance , one couple in particular actually have a big part in influencing the books outcome. fans will recognise all these guys but it doesn't really matter if you've never read any of the other books before. Personally I can be a bit hit and miss with this author, 3 or 4 I've absolutely loved but others have left me a bit underwhelmed and Code Red was a mix of the two. I loved the start of the book where Noah and Keegan are in that ' I really fancy him but does he fancy me back ' stage and could really feel that frisson of tummy churning desire every time they see each other and to be honest I wish that had been drawn out a little bit longer because when they did actually get together Keegans deep in the closet mentality started to grate a little and took away some of the enjoyment. I know that this is the main concept of the story and vital to the plot but at times Keegan is so closeted he is almost homophobic in his attitude to other gays. His excuses for not wanting to come out are valid - he has been in the forces and is in a profession where men are supposed to be macho and being gay means a target for bullying and ridicule - but all through the book ( and this is where the other couples from past books come in ) he comes into contact with gay couples like Mick and Jeff, the two cops from Top Men, Monty and Brendon ( ex Navy Seals) and their partners Kellie and Andy ( Happy Endings and Living Dangerously ) all examples of gay couples making it in a macho environment - but still he continues to deny his sexuality and in doing so constantly hurts Noah who is out and proud and a lovely loving person. The sex is hot but at times the romance is a bit cold due to Keegans treatment of Noah, who has the patience of a saint. Overall I have enjoyed this and will keep it, perhaps a second time round will do more for me. Towards the end it picked up again and I thoroughly enjoyed the incident that finally redeems Keegan and leads to his and Noahs HEA, Just couldn't make it to 5 stars. See what you think!
Reading medic van instead of ambulance; seeing an ER nurse also being assigned to admitted patients; seeing a terminal patient stay in the hospital until the end instead of going to hospice; seeing EMTs decide whether they want to work the fire truck or the medic van.... *sigh* All those things drove me insane! I just kept thinking this isn't in the U.S. Plus Keegan?? I just wanted to tell him to grow a pair! SMH
Aww I loved this book. I felt so much for Keegan the fear he felt if he came out. I also think Noah was perfect and patient with him. They were hot together;-) It will be a great world when there's a time when two men or two women can feel like they can show their love without anything happening. Then this won't even be an issue. Love visiting old friends from other books ;-) Another great one from G.A. Hauser!!
This is the story of two gay men, one out and one not, one a nurse named Noah and the other a firefighter named Keegan. They seem to have lots in common, including their feelings for each other, but there is an almost insurmountable obstacle in their way - the depth of the closet Keegan is hiding in.
As a fireman in a macho-dominated environment and with his life literally in his coworkers' hands, I can definitely understand why Keegan was hesitant to come out, and why it took him so long. Noah has it a little easier since he is already out at work, but the patience required to deal with Keegan's hesitancy is considerable and Noah had my admiration. Then again, the passion between them is so hot that it was no surprise they wanted to be together. Their romance is fast and takes place in the run-up to Christmas, and I was holding my breath more than once as I rooted for them to make it as a couple.
If you like stories about tough firemen who fall for caring nurses, if you want to find out more about a man who has to deal with his cowardice if he wants the man he loves to stay with him, and if you're looking for a read that is as heart-wrenchingly real as it is hot and passionate, then you will probably like this novel.
Entertaining and sweet. I wasn't exactly happy with Keegan's inability to admit to anyone he was gay throughout the whole duration of this story but that certainly made the coming out scene so much more intense. And it wasn't some big dinner or announcement either. Just a simple kiss on the mouth in front of some coworkers and I was proud as punch for him and Noah. Great scene. The HEA was certainly all kinds of sappy but exactly what I expected and I liked it anyway. The writing wasn't perfect but I mostly enjoyed it. My biggest problem was Dwayne (Keegan's partner on the rig) suddenly becoming Dwight in the middle of the novel. Totally out of the blue and nothing I haven't come to expect in this author's novels but...still pisses me off when I see it happening. Some other editing issues but nothing major. Solid plot. Interesting enough main characters. Great support cast. Adequate HEA.

I loved this story Of Noah Hopkins, nurse at LA Medical Center and Keegan Vance, fire fighter. Noah is warm affectionate, out and proud of who he is and what he has achieved. Keegan on the other hand, is still in the closet, and is tough, masculine and a man who wanted to keep his secret. But he really likes Noah. He's been smitten with him for a while. And Noah certainly fancies his 'Code Red', the sexy fireman who has really captured his heart.
It's a story of give and take, of secrets and adversity and definitely mutual attraction. But it takes all Noah's understanding and commitment and all Keegan's courage to finally admit they were meant to be together, and make it public.
I really enjoyed this book and will be reading more of G A Hauser's books.
I gave it 4 stars only because it had firefighters in it. It was very tame. Too much time was spent on "Is he gay? Is he straight?" for my taste. Anti-climatic ending. Very little, if any angst. It could have been SO much better.
Nurse Noah and paramedic/fireman Keegan to the rescue. Noah is out and Keegan is so far in the closet he can't see the light. Cute romance although I wanted to punch Keegan. The ending was a little abrupt and easy but still sweet.
KEEGAN IS AFRAID TO COME OUT OF THE CLOSET, HE MEETS NOAH A NURSE WHO HAS BEEN OUT OF THE CLOSET FOR A LONG TIME. NOAH IS WILLING TO HIDE HIS RELATSHIP WITH KEEGAN BECAUSE HE LOVE HIM. A GREAT BOOK. A MUST READ
