Whether you want to draw a beloved pet cat or a magnificent wolf, this book provides a complete course. Lucy Swinburne explains the strengths of various drawing techniques and materials clearly and simply. The book includes step by step projects for you to follow, ranging from meerkats to horses. This inspiring book is a must-have for any artist seeking to capture the elusive magic of animals, with expert guidance on producing pictures with spirit and majesty in a realistic style.
Excellent book detailing drawing with graphite pencil, pastels, carbon or charcoal pencils or pen. Various techniques are used, such as crosshatching, graduated shading blending, stippling and scribbling. The type of drawing surface is also important. The artist may select canvas, rough watercolor paper or smooth card stock.
Planning your drawing in advance has merit. Draw a grid pattern and transfer the image onto the paper. Next, mark in the outline of the animal you've chosen to draw. Sketch in the animal's fur and features. The eyes are extremely important to the life of the drawing and should be drawn next. Add the nose and darken the fur to give the drawing more depth. With these few simple techniques, anyone can create truly outstanding drawings.
This book is absolutely excellent. Shows a nice variety of animals (cats, dogs, jungle cats, horses, etc) plus little mini-lessons for how to do eyes, noses, etc. The techniques are very clear and straightforward, focusing on layering and using different grades of pencils to build up the details, rather than use blending. AND it has some video examples of the techniques being done (accessible on a private youtube channel). What more can you ask for? I have several other animal drawing books as well, but this is definitely one of my go-to books. I really have no complaints about anything in it. If you want to learn to draw animals, this is a great place to start.
P.S. I'm also happy to report, it looks like the author is going to release a pastel book for animal portraiture soon.
