Robert Dennis Crumb (born August 30, 1943)— is an American artist, illustrator, and musician recognized for the distinctive style of his drawings and his critical, satirical, subversive view of the American mainstream.

Crumb was a founder of the underground comix movement and is regarded as its most prominent figure. Though one of the most celebrated of comic book artists, Crumb's entire career has unfolded outside the mainstream comic book publishing industry. One of his most recognized works is the "Keep on Truckin'" comic, which became a widely distributed fixture of pop culture in the 1970s. Others are the characters "Devil Girl", "Fritz the Cat", and "Mr. Natural".

He was inducted into the comic book industry's Will Eisner Comic Book Hall of Fame in 1991.

In rereading my collection of Weirdos (edited by R. Crumb, Peter Bagge, & Aline Kominsky Crumb) I jumped eleven issues ahead to #12.

While reading Drew Friedman’s profiles of Underground Comix notables (MAVERIX AND LUNATIX: ICONS OF UNDERGROUND COMIX), I came across the entry on Rory Hayes. Rory, who was an avid consumer of amphetamines, shooting up massive amounts of speed, died at the age of 34 of an accidental overdose of pills -presumably amphetamines, naturally.

Rory was born blind in one eye. I don’t know if that had as much to do with his unsettling creative style as his massive intake of illicit substances.

At any rate, though I was initially turned off by his difficult to describe artwork and his almost incoherent scripts all those years ago, I grew to become simultaneously intrigued by and a fan of his material. His comix are a vista of nightmarish landscapes and scenes of extreme violence and mayhem.

Weirdo #12 is “The Special Loser Issue” and reprints a Bill Griffith piece from 1974, “The Rory Story” as well as a special tribute to Rory.

The issue also features work by Crumb (solo and with Aline), Peter Bagge (who was also the editor at this time), J. R. Williams, Drew Friedman, and an awesome Rory Hayes epic.

If I had to choose one issue of Weirdo to own it would be this one.

A beautiful cover by Crumb but I wasn't into any of the stories here. It's got some Drew Friedman, so its not a complete write-off.
