Thoughtings..... is a poetry collection with a difference.

The name Thoughtings was inspired by a five-year old who, when asked to explain what thinking is without using the word "think" said, "It's when youre thoughting."

Children love pondering big, philosophical questions like, "Does the universe end?" "Where is my mind?" and "Can something be true and false at the same time?" These verses capture that impulse in the growing mind, and feed it further.

These are not poems, or at least, not in the traditional sense of the word. . . . They are a kind of poem specifically designed around a particular puzzle or problem that might be thought more philosophy than poetry.

Here's to the joy of puzzlement!

Peter Worley works with The Philosophy Foundation—a team of enthusiasts who promote and train teachers and young people in philosophy worldwide as part of the charity's work.

Andrew Day has a background in language teaching and a degree in philosophy and social anthropology, the combination of which have sparked his passionate curiosity into the part that language plays in the development of thinking.

About the author

Peter Worley BA MA FRSA was born in the Midlands but grew up in the West Country. He failed at school the first time around and so had to do it all again later. He worked as a guitar teacher for many years before completing a philosophy degree in 2000 at UCL an MA in 2002 at Birkbeck and beginning a PhD at KCL in 2010. His interest in philosophy and teaching brought him to the world of philosophy with children and he developed his own approach to doing philosophical enquiry in the classroom called the PhiE method and this is described in his first book 'The If Machine' (Bloomsbury 2011). The book has been well received and has proved to be a must-have resource for teachers wanting to philosophise with their classes. Peter is also the author and/or editor of three other books 'The If Odyssey' (Bloomsbury 2012), 'The Philosophy Shop' (Crown House 2012), both have been short listed for the Educational Resources Awards and The Philosophy Shop won first prize in the anthology category at The New England Book Festival; he co-authored 'Thoughtings' (Crown House 2012) with Andrew Day a collection of philosophical poetry, and Peter's next book 'Once Upon an If: Storytelling for Thinking' (Bloomsbury) will be out in 2014. He has featured on television and Radio 4's The Today Programme talking about philosophy in schools and has been published in a number of educational and philosophical journals as well as lecturing on philosophy in schools at St. Mary's University in West London. He currently lives and works in South East London with his wife Emma, who helps him run the charity The Philosophy Foundation, and their daughter Katie.

Sách phù hợp với những người muốn tìm câu trả lời bằng lý luận, tư duy, và khát khao tìm câu trả lời, những người tổ chức các lớp học về triết học, bố mẹ muốn tập cho con cách suy nghĩ, tư duy logic... Mình không phải một trong số này. Mình muốn đọc một cuốn sách đưa thông tin thuần tuý, không phải kiểu sách đưa câu hỏi như quyển này.

Học cách tư duy như một đứa trẻ từ những câu chuyện, tình huống đơn giản thông qua những câu hỏi gợi mở, không bó buộc phải đi theo hướng nào. Người đọc có thể chọn cho mình hướng đi và đưa ra thêm các câu hỏi nâng cao hơn mà không nhất thiết phải có luôn câu trả lời. Có những câu hỏi rất ngây ngô, trẻ con trong cuốn sách mà mình chả bao giờ hỏi tại sao nó tồn tại, tại sao nó lại như vậy,... vì coi đó là lẽ đương nhiên. Có những câu hỏi mà bản thân mình không thể trả lời nổi hay cứ cố phức tạp hoá nó lên bằng các trường hợp nếu thế này thì... nếu thế kia thì... rồi cũng không đưa ra được đáp án. Những câu hỏi này, theo mình thì nó không có một đáp án chung mà chỉ là gợi mở ra các hướng suy nghĩ, tư duy cho mỗi người để họ tìm ra đáp án của mình. Đọc rồi mới thấy bản thân cứ chạy theo mấy cái cao xa trong khi những cái căn bản thì lại không biết. Khi hình thành được tư duy cơ bản, xây được gốc rễ vững chắc rồi thì việc phát triển phát triển các cành, nhánh cây sẽ trở nên dễ dàng hơn rất nhiều.
Triết học có lẽ sẽ không khó hiểu, cao siêu nếu chúng ta bắt đầu từ những câu hỏi mà một đứa trẻ muốn biết về thế giới xung quanh.
