While dealing with the loss of her mother, she experiences her first heartbreak. She commits herself to her studies and runs away from any emotions that aren't safe. Bradley Banks, a confident CEO and commercial architect, who has long time commitment issues forces Gabby to feel again, but will he be her next heartbreak?
J.B. McGee is a mother, wife, and the Amazon Top 100 author of the best selling This Series. Amazon Crossing acquired the German rights to her debut novel, Broken. Heartfall, her coming of age novel about a bullied ballerina, is a #1 best seller in the Teen and Young Adult Performing Arts genre. Skipping Stones, a military romance about a young woman strongly influenced by her faith and her family all the while searching for her true love, is a #1 best seller in Women's Christian Fiction.
When J.B.'s not writing, she enjoys reading as well as watching and live-chatting her favorite television shows with her friends. Her favorite shows are Quantico, Blindspot, Grey’s Anatomy, The Bachelor/Bachelorette, Below Deck, The Vampire Diaries, The Originals, and Scandal (mainly because of her love of Scott Foley).
Born and raised in Aiken, South Carolina, she attended Converse College and eventually earned her Bachelor of Arts degree in Early Childhood Education from The University of South Carolina-Aiken in 2006.
In college, she was told by her children’s literature professor she would be the one student from her class to be an author. McGee shook her head and laughed. But in 2012, over six years after that statement was made and after a love of reading had been reignited, she gave writing a shot. J.B. gladly ate crow when she emailed her first book to the above mentioned children’s literature professor thanking her and acknowledging the accuracy of her prophecy.
In 2011, it was discovered that not only do both of her children, but also she and her husband, have mitochondrial disease. Affecting 1 in 2500 people, it has no cure or treatments. Being a writer allows J.B. to care for her family’s unique needs while also providing a platform for raising awareness for this disease.
She is a hopeless romantic who loves to escape into fairy tales—some she reads and some she creates.
J.B. McGee and her family now reside in Buford, Georgia.
*********2.5 stars********* I'm wondering if maybe I read a different book than the other reviewers, because my reaction to it seems to be polar opposite. I had a really hard time getting through this book and I'm having issues rating it at all. I'm going to go through some of the issues I had with it, not to bash the author's work, but just to give other potential readers my honest look at what I felt was not a recommendable read.
The story behind Broken in and of itself wasn't bad, but the execution left much to be desired. We have the heroine Gabby who suffered a heartbreaking break-up and possibly some abuse at the hands of a relative, so she's left untrusting and 'broken'. She doesn't want to open up her heart, especially since she wants to stay true to her promise to her mother that she'd stay chaste until marriage. All of these things would be fine for the story if it weren't for the fact that the heroine is over-the-top insecure, clingy, and so highly strung that she's crying within a few hours of meeting her dream guy Bradley because she decides they aren't meant to be. Insta-love romances are hard enough to pull off, but when you toss in overly dramatic emotions to the mix it just becomes eye-roll inducing. I just could not bring myself to like Gabby no matter how hard I tried, so by the end of the book I just didn't really care what happened. The lackluster personalities and dialogue for all of the characters didn't help matters, unfortunately.
The writing was very disjointed, with flip-flops between past and present as well as occasional slips into another character's POV. This may have worked if there were smooth transitions instead of the cut-offs in the middle of scenes, but really I didn't feel like the drawn-out look into Gabby's past relationship with Ian was even necessary. It took away from the time the reader could have spent getting to know Bradley, who was hardly in the story anyway. I wished that I could have felt more of a connection to him since he's supposed to be the man coming into Gabby's life to sweep her off her feet, because it was hard enough buying that a self-described womanizer would suddenly change his ways for a woman like Gabby. There wasn't anything about her personality that made me believe he'd suddenly abstain from sex and dedicate himself to her so entirely, so the relationship just held no spark whatsoever in my opinion and it left me feeling completely detached from their story. It's a shame because I feel like the concept could have been a great story, but this one missed the mark by a mile for me.
"Anything worth having is never simple or easy, Gabby."
Well, Fuck a duck, of course my most brilliant review ever, (wink wink) just got deleted. I've come back and re-wrote a brief review and then came back and added some pics and a quote, but my first review was so much better. I just can't make myself re-write the whole thing. LESSON LEARNED!! LOL.
Gabby
I found this book on Fb accidently a while back. I really had been looking forward to it and wasn't aware this series was so long. Before I get going good I want to say this now. I am not hating on this book and I am continuing the series. BUT, it wasn't what I was expecting.
Bradley
Bradley and Gabby meet at a wedding. In between them getting to know each other every other chapter goes back and forth from the present to the past of her summer before Junior year. Gabby is badly damaged emotionally. She has had a traumatic childhood and been heartbroken by her ex, Ian. She doesn't give Bradley the time of day and ends up giving him the truth of it and leaving the wedding. Months go by. While this is happening we are seeing the storyline of what happened between her and Ian in high school.
Ian
I admit, in the begining the story line between Ian and Gabby just made me bored. I sometimes wanted to skip it all together. But knew if I skipped something important I would be lost, so I stuck with it. What really drove me insane was Gabby's inner thoughts. I understand all the stuff in her past really sucked, I'm talking big time, and I get that she is Broken, hence the title of the book, BUT, OMG she said the same thing over and over about how she was not good enough, her friends were so much prettier, had so much more money, blah blah blah. I will straight up admit, I almost put the book down and decided I was done. She was making me so damn depressed with the way she thought.
I'm really glad I stuck it out though. In the end, she ended up actually talking to someone about everything that had gone down with her andddd, we got some revelations with what went down with Ian slim ball and that alone made me want to keep reading the series.
Once again, I actually really was proud of my other review and this one no where near compares, but this is cutting into my reading time so,...I'm out for now and maybe will edit more tomorrow when I'm not so frustrated that I lost it. :(
POSSIBLE SPOILERS: I feel like I am being incredibly generous by giving this book 2 stars. The grammar was atrocious, the dialogue incredibly unbelievable and there were talking passages that would take up a whole damn page! An active conversation doesn't work like that. The plot was boring...a 20yo sophomore in college who is a virgin (big shocker) who meets and falls for a man whore who is a wealthy commit a phobe. But here is the shocker, she has baggage stemming from a high school love gone wrong. Typical. The most irritating part was the editing. This could have had potential if the author would have taken the time and effort to have an editor pick through this.
Every once in a while a book makes me feel a little bipolar. Let me explain…When I started reading, I quickly noticed that the book was written in alternating third person point of views. One minute you are getting Gabby’s thoughts and then it may switch to her sister or Bradley without much warning. I am not a big fan of this because it can get confusing and feel a bit impersonal. That being said, by the middle of the book, I completely forgot about this as I started to enjoy the story line. It alternated between the present and her meetings with Bradley to her past relationship that broke her heart; I liked this because it helped me to understand Gabby.
Gabby is damaged. She doesn’t have a relationship with her father and has blocked out things that her father did to her as a child. Her mother, who sounded like a wonderful woman, died when she was in high school and all she is left with is her sister Sam. Gabby does not let her guard down often and when she did in high school, her heart was crushed into a million pieces. She has a lot going for her but has low self-esteem and doesn’t always see herself as others see her. She doesn’t think she is pretty and therefore cannot understand why a handsome man would be attracted to her.
I did not get to see enough of Bradley in this book to get a real clear picture on him but this is the first of three books and I am sure everything will be clearer in book 2! I do know he is a playboy and doesn’t do the whole relationship thing. He is successful in his career but wants to keep his personal life simple. He is also a guy that goes after what he wants and does not get rejected. There is also a kind, considerate side of him that made him very hard to resist.
When Gabby and Bradley meet at a wedding, they have instant mutual attraction, however, only one of them is willing to act on it. Gabby can’t let those walls down and she has a feeling that Bradley will expect more from her than she is willing to give. Gabby made a promise to her mother before she died to remain a virgin and she has every intention of keeping it. She is looking for the perfect guy, a prince charming per say, but she doesn’t realize that she actually needs to take a chance and let someone in to accomplish that. Bradley may not be her prince charming but she will never know if she doesn’t give him a chance.
I had some unanswered questions about Bradley’s past and why he lives such a playboy lifestyle and would like to know a little bit more about why he wants to give it all up for Gabby. This book was really about the first phase of a relationship and I am hoping to learn and feel more in the next book.
Overall, I found this to be a good book that I couldn’t put down. I can’t wait to read the next installment and find out what happens between Gabby and Bradley!
Well I finally finished Broken and I have to tell you that Gabby is BROKEN!! Damn, that girl has been through it but is it more of her own making? She was "in-love" with her high-school boyfriend, Ian, her first boyfriend and the boy she crushed on for years! What Ian & Lindsay, Gabby's so call BFF, did would be enough to crush anyone? But this has literally BROKE Gabby to pieces - hence the name of the book? :)
Gabby attends a wedding with her sister Sam and that's where she first lays eyes on Bradley - mmmmmmmmmmmmmm, Bradley the quintessential "ladies" man, beyond beautiful and looking to "hook-up".. Bradley brings out.....
that Gabby has been able to push back. You see she doesn't want to feel anything. Her philosophy, wrong as I think it is, is if you don't feel anything but is that true, Gabby?
Nope, I don't think so! This book is the first in the series and really just is the tip of the iceberg so to speak. You get the opportunity to meet both Gabby & Bradley! I say meet because it's apparent that both have secrets, a past that is painful, and will they give it a go? Well, I for one am looking forward to Mending the second book by JB McGee! I hope the questions I have are answered and we really get to know both Gabby & Bradley in the second book!
This one is 4 star read for me! I think good start for a new author with a potential there for this series to really take off! Which direction I have no idea? But, I would love to see some serious angst and action between the sheets ;)
Since I'm vacillating between 2 and 3 stars, I'll give the benefit of the doubt. This is a good story about a college girl who've been hurt in the past by her boyfriend and her best friend. She was also hurt on some level by her father, but the extent of that is not yet revealed in this book (there are more planned, as it turns out.) As in all stories, girl meets new boy. New boy wants her and is willing to do everything to help her and be with her. This is all good and dandy, however, considering it's not a full length novel (and it should be), and there will be a few more installments to this "This" series, there is a hell of a lot more depth that could have gone into pretty much everything. I'd have loved seeing more character development, more plot development, more depth and gradual progression for each and every act that happens in the story. Another thing that bothered me is the fact that Bradley talking like a man from the 1800s and not a 21st century 29 year old man. Add to that the fact that Gabby is being a tad melodramatic over a high-school first love, it's just a little too much.
I'm planning on reading the following books, if only to know how things turn out. But I'm hoping that J.B. McGee finds herself a brutal beta and some pre readers with a hefty experience in reading emotional stories, to help bring more depth into this.
Gabby was betrayed by her ex-boyfriend and ex-best friend. Since then she cannot trust a man enough to start a relationship. She meets Bradley at a wedding and she knows that he is going to break her heart. He is hot and he can have any woman he wants and Gabby doesn't want to be used and thrown away. So she leaves him in the cold of the bath as we would say here in Greece (she abandons him at the wedding reception to speak english). She isn't able to get him out of her mind and neither has he. So he goes after Gabby and asks her on a date.
We see how the story unravels mostly from Gabbys POV, but we also see a little from Sam and Bradley's POV. If one chapter tells us what happens in present than the next one will tell us what happened in the past with Ian. I really liked it and the cover is very nice and it's sort of a translation of the words written inside the book. Two people holding hands, but the girl leaves him and they barely hold each other, it's what pretty much happens in the book. But still 2 of his fingers and 1 of hers are still together and that's the last parts of the present that happens. Gabby decides to give her relationship with Bradley a chance even though she were hurt in the past.
Broken is the story of college age Gabby, whose life has been anything but easy. Dealing with the devastating death of her mother and the ultimate betrayal of the boy she loves she decides that she will throw herself into her studies and erects some pretty solid walls around her heart after deciding that she can handle no more heartache. But while attending a friends wedding she locks eyes with the devastatingly handsome Bradley Banks. The spark and attraction is instant and mutual. But Bradley doesn't do commitment and Gabby is not looking to open her heart to pain.
Told in past and present tense, it was great to get such a huge look into the back story of what made Gabby so weary of love. So determined to not have to experience that level of heartbreak again. Through those insights I was completely able to understand why Gabby felt the way that she did.
I loved the relationship between Gabby and her sister. Not having a sister myself, I find that I'm always drawn to those sibling relationships. The support and comfort that they offered to each other was heart warming.
And then we have Bradley Banks. I loved him!!! 29 years old. Amazingly successful in business. Extremely confident and slightly cocky. He oozes sex appeal. He is a man who knows what he wants and isn't afraid to go after it. And he has decided that he wants Gabby. But will he be that man to break his way into Gabby's heart?
Broken was quite a quick read. Well written with an engaging storyline and characters. Although I admit to there being times when I was frustrated with Gabby. She is a girl who cries easily but there were a few times throughout the book where things from her past that she has buried deep were eluded to and already my stomach is churning wondering what secrets she has buried so deep that even she can't remember them.
I will definitely be reading the next book in the series Mending when it is released in December. Looking forward to seeing what happens next!!
Gabby's life has been anything but easy. She is surrounded by friends who seem to have everything she doesn't: money, social standing, and happily married parents. While dealing with the loss of her mother and her first heartbreak, she meets her Bradley Banks, a sophisticated CEO who is challenged by his unfamiliar feelings for Gabby. Will he be her next heartbreak?
Um WOW is all I can say after reading the first installment in “This Trilogy!” I devoured this 322 page novel in one sitting…..Yes, you heard me right ONE sitting! This novel will absolutely captivate you leaving you yearning to find out what happens next with Gabby! This story sucks you in leaving you reveling in the emotions of Gabby throughout the entire book!
Gabby’s life has not been easy by any means and it seems as though all her friends have everything that she doesn't. Gabby deals with so much heartache and loss throughout the book building walls that are nearly destructible! You will feel Gabby’s pain laugh with her and cry with her……and if you’re anything like me scream with her as well! You may even throw your Nook a few times (Yep I did that as well.) In comes Bradley Banks a CEO who will possess you the moment he enters! Mmmm that man is like sex on a stick! He is demanding and authoritative yet passionate, caring, and boy oh boy does he want Gabby! Can Bradley break down those walls Gabby has so carefully built to keep others out and work his way into her heart?!?!?
I CANNOT wait for the next book in “This Trilogy” to be released! This is one story that will possess you and leave you yearning for more! There is so much angst and emotion throughout this story! JB McGee is an amazing writer and I have to say Thank You for putting your stories out there for book addicts like me to read! That was one hell of a ride and I cannot wait till the next installment!!! If you are looking for a riveting romance that truly is a page turner then Broken is the book for you!
Why, why, why was this book so short??? I loved it. I felt so bad for Gabby and her painful past. Trust is a hard thing to give people when you are so distrustful. I want everything to work out for her, I want her to be happy. I was really able to connect with Gabby while reading. I wish it was a little longer and we got a better look at Bradley. It sounds like we will get to know him better in Mending. I am now going to be impatiently waiting the release of Mending!!!
I have had Broken by J.B. McGee downloaded for some time but, didn’t have a chance to read it until recently. How I wish I had only know what I was missing out on.
J.B. McGee has written a beautiful and heartwarming story about fate and taking chances, and the battle to overcome heartache while learning to trust in your heart again. J.B. has taken her time developing the story, not rushing the important moments, making me feel like I was actually caught up in the moment.
I ardor the characters of Broken, Gabby is beautiful and full life but there is always something holding her back from being the person, she knows in her heart, she wants to be. Bradley has never experienced anything like this in his life before, is he really ready for it?
What I really enjoyed about Broken was that I experienced so many emotions while reading this story but yet, by the end of this first novel my heart was left feeling full of love and hope.
Looking for a for a feel good love story that will toy with your emotions, make your pulse race and leave you wanting more, Broken is your next read. I can’t wait for Mending, the second novel in this series to be released. N. 4/5
Broken, just read this past weekend and then again the beginning of the following week, this is such a wonderful book. You immediately fall in love with the characters, the main, Gabby is so like able and real. Her relationship with her sister Sam is envious! You will weep for those who fail Gabby and rejoice in what she finds. It is rare that I want to reread a book, especially so quickly, but I wanted more time with these amazing characters and story. I can not wait for part 2 of the trilogy to be released, as I eagerly want to see where the story will go. Ms McGee has for her freshman outing as an author, brought us so smoothly into the life of Gabby, that she reads like a good friend! I so recommend this book. Although suggested as adult fiction, an older teen could easily find this an enjoyable read. Look for this book, buy it, read it, recommend it!!!!
I enjoyed reading this book. It was written in a different style. Every other chapter is either the past or the present. It took me a little bit to get used to this style but I found myself enjoying it.
This is the story of Gabby and Bradley. Bradley is a drop dead gorgeous wealthy bachelor with piercing blue eyes. He was used to getting what he wanted all the time. He met his match with Gabby. She didn't want anything to do with him because of her painful past. This is their story...
Really enjoyed this story. This is book 1 of the trilogy. I like the development of the characters by the author. The story is written in a very different way than what I have read in the past with each chapter going between the present and the past to lead the reader through the story to get an understanding of what transpired in Gabby's past to make her so cautious of entering into a relationship with Bradley. Looking forward to reading Mending and Forgiven.
this short read was just what I needed on a Sunday night. I think this story has potential and I can't wait to see where it goes.
I love how new authors can get these stories out to share with us.
I am so pleased to see positive reviews, the story kept you interested and has room to grow. I can't help but want to hug and shake some sense into Gabby all at the same time.
Lots of whining and crying and sniveling conversations. I didn't really feel the love at all. There's definitely a cliffhanger at the end and the story continues in the second book, "Mending." I'm not sure I'll even give it a chance for redemption. Just didn't keep my attention very well at all.
The story begins with Gabby as she I getting ready to attend her cousins wedding. Gabby is young, shy and a bit insecure. She has a past that did a number on her and she isn’t quite over that yet.
At the wedding she meets a handsome stranger, one of the ushers who sets her on fire from the small touch of her hand on his arm. Could it be that he feels the same thing? Bradley Banks, Mr. Tall Dark and oh so sexy feels an instant attraction to Gabby but is it something she can believe and let herself feel as well?
"Oh, she loved weddings and longed for the day she would have her own. The day when she would be kissed like that by a man who wouldn’t leave her, a man who would promise to love her, to make it his mission to worship and cherish her for the rest of his life."
The story gave me a bit of whiplash trying to keep up with the alternating POV’s as they were random and sporadic. One minute you are with Bradley, then Gabby and then Sam…I had to stop and re-read a few section to get a hold of where, what and who I was reading. The alternating time line helped to give and understanding of Gabby’s past and what makes her so cautious with her love and her heart.
The background story is heart breaking. The betrayal that Gabby goes through with Ian lets the reader know why she is cautious with Bradley. The promise she makes to her mother on her death bed gives Gabby obstacles to overcome with her love life but the conviction she has to the promise is admirable.
Overall, Broken is a sweet story of having a shadowed past and what it can do to you in your future if you don’t deal with it. I liked Gabby and could identify with her easily enough to get passed the many POV’s and Bradley is lovely. I want to know more about him, his past is intriguing and worth a look into. We did not get much of him in this book. I look forward to the next book to see if they can overcome their issues and have to heal themselves to experience THIS!
"I have tried to get you off my mind for the entire summer. I know that we don’t really know each other. I had to see if I saw you again, if I touched you again, if this, this feeling would still be here."
Broken is an emotional story about learning to love and trust after you have been broken. Gabby is a young college student who has gone through heartbreak. She has built up walls in hopes to numb the pain of her past. Nothing seems to go her way... Then she meets Bradley at a wedding. It was instant chemistry. The rest of the book is about Gabby trying to accept a loving relationship with Bradley.
"You make me greedy for you. I just can't get enough. I wish you would just accept it for what it is and trust me."
This was a great story line. I really enjoyed the dynamic between Gabby and Bradley. Although I understood what Gabby went through in her past, I did get a little tired of her insecurities. That being said, it was a good story and I look forward to reading Book 2 in This Trilogy.
Wow what an amazing book. Gabby is so easy to connect to and I felt every bit of her pain! Ian is so smooth. I liked him a lot at first, until her breaks her heart. I love the book for the simple fact that loads of people can sympathise with the heartache Gabby feels. Then she meets Bradley. :D
Oh Bradley, he had me at the first grin he gives her at the wedding. I like an alpha male so it pulled me into him straight away, the. He climbs over mountains to be with her after making an ass of himself! (I didn't think of him as an ass, I would have took him up that first night haha)
This book is beautifully written with lots of emotional bits in there.
What an amazing story. This book had me captivated from the beginning. It has such a beautiful, romantic, and sad story line. Gabby has more baggage than baggage claim. I can't wait for the second book in this trilogy to find out what happens with Gabby and Bradley. I love how the book takes you back to when her heartbreak happened and back to the present at the same time. I cried several times throughout this book. Can't wait J.B. McGee for the second book. You are a very talented writer.
OMG! Just finished broken and absolutely fell in love with it. The characters captured me and I was able to feel their emotions and put myself in gabby's place and was able to feel how broken she is and at the same time feel how badly she wants to be "fixed". I got so engrossed in the story and so emotionally involved that I wanted to run Ian and Lindsay over in my car for being complete jack assess!! The chemistry between Bradley and Gabby is phenomenal and I can't wait to see how everything turns out in book 2. Broken is a great start to a great new series! Congrats!!
Broken is absolutely amazing!! <3 This book will have your heart breaking, your heart pounding, and your eyes tearing up! You can't help but cheer on Gabby and Bradley! The second book, Mending, is also going to be EPIC! Broken builds up the story and Mending will knock your socks off! Way to go JB McGee!!!

I loved this story and I loved the two main characters. This book has been very cleverly written. I loved how this was written in both the past and the present but it was in no way confusing. As some books show you a little bit of people's past this showed you quite a bit which enabled you to relate with the female lead. I would seriously recommend this book to anyone. I am so looking forward to the next one. This book deserves its 5 stars and more x
OMG....so well written....believable characters....so much hurt;( Gabby is so broken ..... You root for her from chapter 1..... Please Bradley......find a way to put her back together....no young girl should have this much pain:( waiting to see what happens next......please please please HEA is so desperately needed for this story! Loved this...quick read....couldn't put it down!
3.5 Stars This book had potential....has potential. Afterall it's a series. I think my biggest problem was perhaps the writing style which was 3rd person. I'm not a huge fan. I also didn't have a very strong connection to either of the main characters. However for the price I paid of $.99 it was an entertaining enough read and has me invested enough to see where the storyline goes.....
Absolutely amazing! I love this book! Gabby n Bradley are amazing characters. You feel like your in the story with them! You can tell these will be chemistry from the moment they met! J B McGee you blow me away with your writing skills. Totally amazing. Can't wait for book 2+3! Totally deserving of 5% stars xx
loved this book.. I normally do not care for books that jump back and forth with dates but it worked for this book. I liked how the story was more true to real life than most books. Can't wait for the next one!!
Beautiful how the chapters go back and forth between past and present... Really get a feel for what causes her hesitance at the moment. The end is a little rushed but still a great lead into the next book.
