In this highly original first novel, John, a guy in his midtwenties, is concerned about the passivity of his friend Andrew's life. Andrew seems content to sit on the beach, look out at the water and ponder not-too-deep thoughts. After years of witnessing this behavior, John concocts a wild plan to shake up his friend for good.
William Sartore is the author of 2 books, Inspired: A Novel (2012) and How Way Leads on to Way: Stories from Around the World (2010). He has been living abroad for the past 5 years, jumping back and forth between Africa, Europe, and Asia, and finding endless inspiration for writing along the way. He currently resides in South Korea.
An entertaining and original first novel with all the elements -- inner and outer journeys, friendship, and an exotic setting -- for success. I will definitely looking for more of William Sartore's work.
This neat and tightly structured novel says a lot about friendship and growing up. Andrew is a self-centred dreamer who is pushed out into the real world for the first time, and we observe how he copes, how he doesn’t cope, and how he changes. It’s not a straightforward coming of age story though, but something more satisfying and original. An insightful work.
A book that really made me think, and reflect on my own path. I could truly relate to the characters and would absolutely revisit this novel from time to time as I continue my journey.
