Masashi Kishimoto (岸本斉史 Kishimoto Masashi) is a Japanese manga artist, well known for creating the manga series Naruto. His younger twin brother, Seishi Kishimoto, is also a manga artist and creator of the manga series O-Parts Hunter (666 Satan) and Blazer Drive. Two of his former assistants, Osamu Kajisa (Tattoo Hearts) and Yuuichi Itakura (Hand's), have also gone on to moderate success following their work on Naruto.

Kishimoto's first work as a manga artist was Karakuri (カラクリ?), which he submitted to Shueisha in 1995. This earned him the Weekly Shōnen Jump's monthly "Hop Step Award" in 1996, granted to promising new manga artists. This was followed in 1997 by a pilot version of Naruto (NARUTO-ナルト-), published in Akamaru Jump Summer. In 1998, Kishimoto premiered as a Weekly Shōnen Jump artist with a serialized version of Karakuri in Weekly Shōnen Jump, but it proved unpopular and was canceled soon after. In 1999, a serialized version of Naruto began publication in Weekly Shōnen Jump and quickly became a hit.

Historia: 3*
Arte: 3*

It's Lee's turn to fight, and he has to face Gaara. A boy with a demon inside of him who craves murder. Lee shows true strength, yet it is not enough. His injuries are extensive and he might never be able to be a ninja again. With that the preliminaries are finished and Naruto starts training for the finals. To become the best ninja he can he must unlock the power to manipulate the chakra of the Nine Tailed Fox. Naruto has his first battle in the finals, against Neji.

"all your hard work will prove worthless unless you believe in yourself"

I love that this one, while still was very combat heavy, showed more backstories for characters and is starting to raise the tension of Sasuke's story. Also Neji is so cool and Might Guy is so fun, yes I am biased

This is a review of the entire series.

Once upon a time, the spirit of an evil Nine Tailed Fox wreaked havoc on Konohagakure; the Village Hidden in the Leaves, killing hundreds of honorable ninja in the skirmish and leaving many children without homes or parents. The Fourth Hokage (leader of the village) unleashes a forbidden jutsu (magic spell/ninja ability) to seal the spirit of the evil fox into the body of a newborn baby named Naruto at the cost of his own life. He did this in the hopes that the boy could one day learn to master the power of the demonic spirit and use it to protect the village and become a great hero of the people.

Unknown to the citizens of the Leaf, the Nine Tailed Fox was being controlled by an even more powerful adversary, a legendary rogue ninja that plans to wage war against the entire world from the shadows. The identity of the mysterious ninja that attacked the Leaf Village using the Nine Tails died with the Fourth Hokage, and he used what remained of his life to gift Naruto with the power of one day being able to stop this evil ninja and a clan of outlawed S-rank criminals called the Akatsuki from committing mass genocide against the many hidden villages and clans of the world.

Because of the evil spirit sealed inside him, Naruto grew up hated by the other children of the village because they believe him and the Nine Tails to be one and the same. They believe he’s a ticking time bomb waiting to go off, waiting for the perfect moment to kill them all just like the Nine Tails killed their parents and families. Shunned, dehumanized and treated like dirt, Naruto vows to become the greatest hokage the world has ever seen so that he can receive the love and acknowledgement he never got as a child.

On top of the Nine Tails power and the will to never quit, Naruto also possesses the uncanny ability to turn everyone he meets into a potential comrade. He brings out the best in his peers and tries his hardest to make his enemies see the errors of their ways. He disobeys the rules and ignores cultural traditions to try and make changes to the world and break the eternal cycle of war and hatred through his own methods. His determination is infectious to friend and foe alike. He earns himself the respect he deserves by overcoming one impossible obstacle at a time.

Naruto encounters many fascinating and terrifying ninja over the course of his journey to become hokage. Among them are Sasuke Uchiha, Naruto’s best friend and rival who is driven by the vengeful lust to murder his elder brother after he wiped out their own clan in cold blood. Sasuke warms up to Naruto, but his hatred and trauma are dangerous forces that threaten to break his moral code as a ninja and destroy his reputation among his peers.

Kakashi Hatake is a notorious copycat ninja that survived one of the most brutal and devastating wars in history as well as the Nine Tails attack on the Leaf Village. He becomes Naruto and Sasuke’s mentor and teaches them a great number of valuable lessons about surviving in the dangerous world of rogue ninja, bloodthirsty assassins and clans ruled by corruption.

Jiraiya is a perverted yet wise sage who taught the Fourth Hokage everything he knew and he’s regarded as a god among shinobi that’s famous for his heroic actions in the second great ninja war. He takes an interest in Naruto and raises him as a father figure to carry on the legacy of the Fourth Hokage to prepare him for the many dangerous people that want to use his power for their own nefarious purposes.

The Akatsuki is one such group of wicked ninja. Among them are Sasuke’s brother Itachi who murdered his clan and possesses many dangerous techniques involving illusions, psychological torture and elemental manipulation. Sasori who controls poisonous puppets with magical threads, Orochimaru who mastered the forbidden arts of reanimation and quasi-immortality, Deidara who fights from afar using detonating clay and many other deadly foes.

The entire series chronicles Naruto and his fellow ninja comrades growing through countless trials and tragedies. There are hundreds of unique jutsus, clans, and techniques which lead to some very intense, creative and strategic battles between skilled ninja with diverse abilities that don’t always match up evenly. There are clan based abilities such as the Aburame clan’s ability to control insects, the Yamanaka clan’s ability to jump into other people’s minds and control their bodies and the Inuzuka clan’s ability to bond with wolves that learn to mimic their master’s battle skills. Then there’s ocular genetic abilities such as the sharingan which allows the user to create psychological illusions, copy their enemy’s abilities and manipulate elemental energy. The byakugan allows the user to read their enemies vital points and detect their spiritual energy from faraway. The rinnegan grants control over space and gravity and so on.

On top of having countless unique abilities, nearly every character has a tragic backstory that makes them sympathetic and relatable, even the nastiest of the villains have well-explored reasons for following the paths they do and becoming the way they are. One of my favorite aspects of the series is how well it explores the physical, emotional and psychological effects war can have on society and culture as well as the survivors and future generations that are forced to live in them. How it breeds racism and cultural disputes, how it inspires hatred in orphaned children and war veterans robbed of their homes toward foreign nations, as well as how this eventually leads to further death, war, poverty and destruction. Learning to forgive the ones you hate to prevent further conflict and damaging the world for future generations even further is a major theme throughout the story.

Being a massive 700 chapter series, it’s not too surprising that there’s some plot holes and consistency issues. A rule might be stated regarding the requirements and usage of a certain jutsu or ability only for that rule to be repeatedly broken 400 chapters later. Sometimes the characters and rules contradict themselves, sometimes the chronology of certain events and historical facts don’t match up perfectly, the lore and general backstory go through several retcons that change the philosophy and power scaling of the characters and the scope of world-building; the final arc especially drags on and breaks a lot of the logic and rules that the story spent the whole series setting up, etc...

Naruto’s far from perfect, but I remember it very fondly for being one of the first series that introduced me to things like manga and Japanese entertainment in general. It was one of those childhood classics like Dragon Ball, Inuyasha, Yu Yu Hakusho and Rurouni Kenshin. The series grew up with me and I can’t help but feel grateful to it for introducing me to hundreds of other franchises that I’m still a huge fan of to this day and I continue to find many new ones on the regular. Naruto's journey from a clownish, disrespected outcast into a talented, well-loved and admired hero is a memorable one.

Back to the 3-in-1 volumes. Since I owned Volumes 6 and 9 from childhood, I didn't want to "double dip" by buying the 3-in-1s that contained them. Moving forward into the series, it's cheaper to buy these omnibus versions, even if the page quality reflects the lower total price. Well, VIZ manga releases are way shittier than Japanese books anyway, so... Eh.

I forgot I'd read the introduction of Jiraiya in VIZ's monthly Jump magazine release, including the chapters with Kurama in the "cage." So I've seen more of this series in its source material than I initially recalled. But I didn't realize there was so much time between tournament prelims and the official Third Exam, so.... Honestly, kind of assumed Jiraiya popped up after the exam, and much closer to Tsunade's introduction. But, clearly, I'm wrong.

This release contains three volumes, so presumably I could write a lot about its contents, but technically I'm working, and also I don't feel like it. The big things are: Rock Lee versus Gaara (Volume 10); Naruto training with Jiraiya, achieving greater control over the Kyūbi chakra, and summoning Gamabunta (Volume 11); and Naruto versus Neji (Volume 12). More things happen, perhaps most notably the increasing focus on a conspiracy between Sound and Sand representatives to crush Konoha, setting up the next story arc, aptly referred to as the... uh, well, the "Konoha Crush Arc." And we finally get to see Temari in action as the audience, despite most of the cast having seen her in action off-panel earlier on, so we now have an idea of what each Sand kid can do. Oh, and it's outright stated that Gaara has a monster within him as well, which will be more important shortly, then arguably much more important like thirty or so volumes later.

The highlight, for me, is an early scene in the bathhouse, before Ebisu begins training Naruto to walk on water, where we see a random nude woman with big titties covered by a towel. It shows Kishimoto could very well attempt to give Kubo a bit of a run for his money, but Kishimoto's heart is apparently dedicated to bishōnen characters. It was very interesting to see Hayate rank so highly in the second anniversary character poll, for example. (And upsetting to see Kurenai so low...)

Worst part, and I think this happened in a couple earlier volumes but I forgot to say, is when Kishimoto seems to be copying the "unnecessarily long explanations of abilities" shit from HxH. Wait. Did Togashi do that yet? I think maybe when Nen was first introduced. I should really know, since it wasn't long ago I re-read the first few arcs of the series. Whatever. Fuck Jujutsu Kaisen.

-- VOL 10 -- A Splendid Ninja

This volume starts with the best action sequence yet.. Rock Lee vs. Gaara (W). What a fight. Arguably, the 2 most powerful Genin we have seen so far going at it in a ferocious battle. Rock Lee is such an inspiring character, and his relationship with Master Guy is amazing. Unfortunately, Choji vs. Dosu (W) was an underwhelming final fight, but I guess you have to keep things balanced! Kabuto reveals himself to Kakashi as Sasuke's story seems to separate from our other Cell Team 7 Memebers, with Naruto meeting his new training partner.. The Mega Perv Jiraiya!

-- VOL 11 -- Impassioned Efforts

This volume focuses mainly on Naruto and Jiraiya training in an attempt to get ready for the final stage of the Chunin Exam, 1v1s in front of both the Leaf and Sand leaders. Jiraiya teaches Naruto a new move; Summoning, which can only be achieved thanks to The Nine-Tailed Fox's chakara. Gaara gives us a couple of details about his upbringing, showing us how similar him and Naruto are and how different Naruto could have had it not been for those around him. Dosu and Proctor Hayate both die as it is revealed that the villages of both Sand and Sound are working against the Leaf Village.

-- VOL 12 -- The Great Flight

As our main story continues, we are treated to 2 very different fights; Naruto (W) vs. Neji and Temari vs. Shikamaru (W). A lot of the volume seemed to be focused on the Hyuga clan and the history between Main Branch & Cadet Branch. Neji has a rather interesting background, and I'm excited to see where his story goes now he has lost his obsession with "fate.". Shikamaru again got another chance to shine with his intelligence and strategic planning, which is really refreshing to see in a world where certain characters are just so powerful that it seems difficult to keep them all at the same level.

So let's start with a positive, the fight between Rock Lee and Gara has to be the best fight so far. It was intense, I bloody loved it.

Now for the bad, everything is over explained after the fight we essentially have a whole volume explaining stuff. How Chakra works, how to summon toads, different types of charka. So much so that it actually dedicated four whole pages to an explanation, now I can't speak for everyone but when I read manga I expect a mix of visual and written explanation. Not bloody paragraphs in my manga, the explanation of the 8 gates during the Rock Lee and Gara fight was done well enough it didn't take away, if anything it actually added to the impact. I don't need a whole manga to explain how a kamehameha, I just don't care!

Then you have disappearing for most of this, what is he doing? No idea but he's supposed to be in charge of Team 7 but they're just ditched. Sakura is hanging out with friends, no idea about Sasuke and he got some pervert who's weaker than Naruto to train him. It just rubbed me the wrong way, I really liked him till this point. It lead to the introduction of Jiraiya but I didn't want Naruto to get a new mention it's way too early.

The awesomeness returns with the Naruto vs Neji, it even had some heartfelt moments but the momentum was kind of lost because of all the over explaining that happened before. I forgot to mention they even explain how a tournament works, after having a tournament, just why? What's the point. The Temari vs Shikamaru was a lot better than I expected, all the fights in this were fantastic though, each in a very different way.

This could have been an utterly phenomenal volume, yet it was ruined by explaining every single thing that happened.

These volumes were a whole lot of fun (as usual)! I'm really enjoying learning more about the pasts of the crew, as well as being able to see their motivations and flaws. All the fights during the Chūnin exams have been a blast, and I'm eager to see how Sasuke manages against Gaara.

The biggest complaint I have with the series rn is how terrible Naruto's teachers have been. Kakashi didn't realize Naruto couldn't access his chakra, so he pawned him off to another teacher to learn lessons he didn't need while going on to train Sasuke individually. That was uncool of him; he always leaves Naruto and Sakura behind to focus on Sakura. Jiraiya on the other hand. Just. I don't recall if it happens later in the manga or during the anime, but there's a scene where Jiraiya steals Naruto's money to hire prositutes; that, plus the scene we saw in these last volumes where Naruto is faced with death as a teaching method, I'm very upset that we're supposed to think that Jiraiya is a good teacher (and later, father figure) to Naruto. Only Iruka really seems to have cared for Naruto, but he certainly didn't do all he could considering he was Naruto's only bond. I wish the kid ever got an actually decent teacher...

This series just keeps improving and getting better in every book. The fight between Gaara and Lee is one of the best I have ever seen. The character work is amazing, we continue to build on the cast as more development is brought forward. There is a new character by the name of Jiraiya that seems to be a big player in the future. The book has shown a continuous build-up of tension between the characters that pays off in this book. There is more depth given to characters like Neji who I did not like at first but now can't wait to see more of. This was a very exciting issue full of laughs, good storytelling, and intense action, beyond ready to continue.

This was a very good volume which did well in showing just how manipulative Orochimaru can be. Yet how conniving he and Kabuto can be and how there is a complex relationship between the two.
Yet I found the connections that Naruto and Gaara were making interesting and yet how he was reacting to what Gaara was saying, who knows what he's taking about, versus Shikimaru, who thought that he was just crazy.
However the fights were well done and did not go the way that the reader would expect.

Though I understand why they do it (and it's an honored tradition in anime/magna), I really hate the standing around in the middle of a fight to give Neji's backstory. Though I'm starting to like Shikamaru more and more.
