Internationally known for Corto Maltese, a series of adventure comics first published in Italy and France between 1967 and 1991, Pratt is regarded as a pioneer of the literary graphic novel.
Born in Rimini, Italy, Pratt spent his childhood in Venice in a cosmopolitan family environment. In 1937, ten-years old Hugo moved with his parents to Ethiopia, East Africa, following the Italian occupation of the country. Pratt's father eventually died as a prisoner of war in 1942. Hugo himself and his mother spent some time in a British prison camp in Africa, before being sent back to Venice. This childhood experiences shaped Pratt's fascination with military uniforms, machineries and settings, a visual constant in most of his adult works.
As a young artist in post-war Italy, Pratt was part of the so-called 'Venice Group', which also included cartoonists Alberto Ongaro, Mario Faustinelli. Their magazine Asso di Picche, launched in 1945, mostly featured adventure comics.
In 1949 Pratt moved to Buenos Aires, Argentina, where he worked for various local publishers and interacted with well-known Argentine cartoonists, most notably Alberto Breccia and Solano López, while also teaching at the Escuela Panamericana de Arte. During this period he produced his first notable comic books: Sgt. Kirk and Ernie Pike, written by Héctor Germán Oesterheld; Anna nella jungla, Capitan Cormorant and Wheeling, as a complete author.
From the summer of 1959 to the summer of 1960, Pratt lived in London drawing war comics by British scriptwriters for Fleetway Publications. He returned to Argentina for a couple more years, then moved back to Italy in 1962. Here he started collaborating with the comics magazine Il Corriere dei Piccoli, for which he adapted several classics, including works by Robert Louis Stevenson.
In 1967, Hugo Pratt and entrepreneur Florenzo Ivaldi created the comics magazine Il Sergente Kirk, named after one of Pratt's original characters. Pratt's most famous work, Una ballata del mare salato (1967, The Ballad of the Salty Sea) was serialised in the pages of this magazine. The story can be seen as one of the first modern graphic novels. It also introduced Pratt's best known character, mariner and adventurer Corto Maltese. Corto became the protagonist of its own series three years later in the French comics magazine Pif gadget. Pratt would continue releasing new Corto Maltese books every few years until 1991. Corto's stories are set in various parts of the world, in a given moment in the first three decades of the 20th century. They often tangently deal with real historical events or real historical figures. The series gave Pratt international notoriety, being eventually translated into fifteen languages.
Pratt's other works include Gli scorpioni del deserto (1969-1992), a series of military adventures set in East Africa during WWII, and a few one-shots published for Bonelli's comic magazine Un Uomo Un'Avventura ('One Man One Adventure'), most notably the short story Jesuit Joe (1980, The Man from the Great North). He also scripted a couple of stories for his pupil Milo Manara.
Pratt lived in France from 1970 to 1984, then in Switzerland till his death from bowel cancer in 1995.

Τρίτο αυτοτελές άλμπουμ του Ούγκο Πρατ που διαβάζω, μετά το εξαιρετικό "The Man From The Great North" που διάβασα πέρσι και το καταπληκτικό "Οι Σκορπιοί της Ερήμου" που διάβασα φέτος τον Ιανουάριο, σίγουρα μου φάνηκε λιγάκι κατώτερο και των δυο, αλλά όπως και να'χει σε γενικές γραμμές το βρήκα ιδιαίτερα ικανοποιητικό και ποιοτικό. Το σχέδιο είναι πιο αφαιρετικό και όχι τόσο λεπτομερές όσο ήταν στο "Οι σκορπιοί της ερήμου" που είναι ακόμα φρέσκο στο μυαλό μου, όμως εντέλει με άφησε ικανοποιημένο (δεν είναι και λίγα τα καρέ που χάζεψα λίγη ώρα παραπάνω). Επίσης η ιστορία μου φάνηκε κάπως "μπουκωμένη" με τις τόσες αποστολές του Μόργκαν, όμως ευχαριστήθηκα δράση και δυνατά σκηνικά. Περιττό να αναφέρω ότι ο κυνισμός του Πρατ απέναντι στον πόλεμο και την πολιτική είναι αρκετά έντονος, αν κάτσει και το σκεφτεί κανείς. Τέλος, πρέπει κανείς να λάβει υπόψιν του ότι αυτό είναι το τελευταίο κόμικ του Πρατ, το οποίο έγραψε και σχεδίασε πιθανότατα όντας άρρωστος... Το πρόσημο είναι οπωσδήποτε θετικό!

Όπως κάθε έκδοση της Μαμούθ για τον Πράτ έτσι και εδώ έχουμε στα χέρια μας άριστη δουλειά. Πολύ καλό δέσιμο, ωραίο γυαλιστερό παχύ χαρτί, πληρέστατα εισαγωγικά σημειώματα με κατατοπιστικές πληροφορίες που σε βάζουν στο κλίμα για το τι πρόκειται να διαβάσεις. Δεν είναι από αυτές τις φορές που τα προσπερνάς γιατί βαριέσαι να ασχοληθείς μιας και ο ρόλος του Μόργκαν και της φρεγάτας του ήταν πολύ στοχευμένος.
Αρχικά ο πλωτάρχης Μόργκαν και το πλήρωμα του μεταφέρουν μέλη των σωμάτων των βρετανικών ειδικών δυνάμεων στις ακτές της Ανδριατικής, κυρίως στην Αλβανία και την Κροατία για να συμμετάσχουν ή να εκτελέσουν αποστολές αυτοκτονίας. Σε μια συνέντευξη του ο Πρατ είχε αναφέρει πως έμπνευση για την ιστορία αποτέλεσαν γνωστοί του που διετέλεσαν σε αυτά τα ειδικά κλιμάκια κατά την διάρκεια του Β.Π.Π. Συγκεκριμένα τα special forces corps που βασίστηκε ήταν οι British Commandos, το πρώτο επίλεκτο σώμα ειδικών δυνάμεων που δημιούργησε ο Churchill έχοντας στο μυαλό του "ένα ειδικά εκπαιδευμένο σώμα κυνηγών που θα εγκαθιδρύσουν μια βασιλεία τρόμου στις ακτές του εχθρού". Από τις πιο γνωστές επιχειρήσεις αυτού του πρώτου κλιμακίου ήταν οι Operation Archery και Claymore (στις νήσους Lofoten) στις Νορβηγικές ακτές. Το σώμα αυτό εξελίχθηκε στο τέλος του 1942 και της επιτυχούς επιχείρησης Chariot στις ακτές τις Γαλλίας σε 30 τάγματα British Commando εκ των οποίων τα 8 ήταν πλέον οι Βασιλικοί πεζοναύτες. Όπως γίνεται αναφορά και στο εισαγωγικό σημείωμα, κάποια από τα στοιχεία αντλήθηκαν και από τους λεγόμενους σκορπιούς της ερήμου, τους Long Range Desert Group, και τέλος τους πεζοναύτες της SBS (Special Boat Service) όπου και έχουν τον κυρίαρχο ρόλο στις μεταγωγικές αποστολές του Μόργκαν.
Ο Μόργκαν όμως ήταν μαχητής στην ψυχή και όχι Βασιλικός ταχυδρόμος όπως συνήθιζε να λέει, οπότε παίρνει την πρωτοβουλία και οργανώνει διάφορες επιθετικές επιχειρήσεις στις ακτές με την βοήθεια μιας ιπτάμενης την οποία κορτάρει με την χαρακτηριστική Βρετανική διακριτικότητα. Το "Μόργκαν" αν και με ένα πιο αφηρημένο και ασυμπίεστο σχέδιο από το κύριο σώμα της σειράς Κόρτο Μαλτέζε, εξακολουθεί να διατηρεί την φινέτσα της πένας του Πρατ και να κυλάει ξεκούραστα και συναρπαστικά στο μάτι. Άξιο λόγου το γεγονός πως παρόλο που είναι το τελευταίο άλμπουμ του, δεν βγάζει την αίσθηση της κούρασης και της παράδοσης που εκπέμπουν άλλες τελευταίες δουλειές των "μεγάλων". Έχει σενάριο γεμάτο θηριωδία και δράση ενώ ταυτόχρονα διατηρεί την ανάγκη της απελευθέρωσης ακόμα και στο αυστηρό στρατιωτικό πλαίσιο του Βασιλικού ναυτικού.
Ιδιαίτερο βρήκα και το σημείωμα του Pierre Schoendoerffer, πολύ καλογραμμένο και νοσταλγικό.

Una historia de aventuras situada a finales de la II Guerra Mundial en el mar Adriático. Está bien pero creo que el argumento tiene más potencial, desde luego da para una novela muy interesante. Como me suele pasar con los cómics, me da la sensación que todo pasa muy deprisa, sin llegar a profundizar en los personajes. Una pena aunque eso no ha impedido que disfrute del cómic.

Hienoa lukea Prattilta suorempi tarina. Ei turhia syvällisyyksiä saatika toisia tajunnantasoja. Suora sotaseikkailu. Vaikka piirtokynä ei terävimmillään Prattilla ollut, niin kyllä tämä Korkkarit voittaa.

Quella di Morgan è una storia strana, non semplice. La guerra vista da un protagonista non proprio attivo, che ha un compito importante ma vorrebbe fare altro.

A tale of a English Royal Navy officer, through his missions during the 2nd World War. Interesting, but not spectacular, although the great artwork follows Pratt's unique style.
