Es ist leicht, die Charaktere sympathisch zu finden und mit ihnen zu fühlen und mit ihnen zu leiden. Kein Wunder, dass das Werk zu seiner Zeit ein Bestseller war.
Die Sprache ist poetisch und zeichnet ein genaues und überaus detailliertes Bild der Biedermeierzeit in Berlin.
